Black & Decker Under Cabinet Lighting Review - Worth It?

  • For years, we have tried to find an under-cabinet lighting solution in our kitchen - we've tried puck lighting and cheap RGB strips, but both solutions were cumbersome and frustrating. When we saw the B&D Smart under-cabinet lighting kit on sale for Prime Day, we decided to give them a try to see if they were of high quality and easy to install.
The installation was the best part - it was very easy to mount the brackets for the lighting bars, and the bars themselves can be adjusted for the perfect fit. The cables are pre-cut so you don't have to worry about soldering, and they can be very conveniently managed with some time.
The lights are also constructed very well. They provide a nicely diffused light and can dim very low without flickering. Moreover, they get bright enough for us to cook without having to turn on our main kitchen lights. Although there are only 5 daylight color options, I personally feel they all fit in well with our kitchen. Moreover, you can use the included Smart Home app to set up routines to change the lighting throughout the day.
However, they are ONLY compatible with the Amazon Alexa app. This was a great shame for someone that has all of their Smart Home routines configured through the Google Home app. I hate walled gardens, and I wish that B&D would open up an API so the lights could work with a Homebridge or Home Assistant plugin.
