- Today we're building custom 4wd drawers in the diy canopy setup to make our off-grid storage a bit more organised. This was a big project for the canopy build but stoked with how they've turned out - let me know what you think!!

Top job. So impressed with how straight your circular saw cuts are freehand. Yes you've a line to follow but they come out great. Nice job integrating those connectors you love into a plywood drawer build too!
Thanks mate!! 😁
Amazing work, my Aussie brother top job 🍻
Vic offroad seem to have really affordable slides too. They only go up to ~1m length though, where those linked go much longer but they are still pretty good.
Just use the lock tabs as the handle. You only need to pull them slightly to then grab the top of the drawer, look tidier too
well done. couple observations. 1. id have the angle channel on the outiside holding the drawers together. would make it more structurally sound and acts as a physical barrier and prevents the bottom of the draw blowing out, also will help securing the runner to metal as its less prone to the screws pulling through. 2. i wouldnt be spray painting the draws, id be rolling the paint on. wood is a giant sponge, so the more paint you can get into the grain, the better it will be protected from rot and weather. also helps to paint the end grain of your work piece, as its the most porous, and is the most prone to rotting and weather damage. 3. that tiny tag you have left around the runner levers/locks/latch, will snap. being plywood, it is susceptble to chipping. will probably look neater cutting it off rather than accidentally snapping it off down the track. apart from the above, very clean and tidy job. good to see people making their stuff rather than purchasing it. will be much more gratifying in the end knowing you truly built it.
Well done Daniel! Consider adding some Bunnings Grunt 30cm Aluminium O Tracks on the drawer top to keep light stuff such as chairs etc secure. Would need to bolt them in and use washers.
Thanks mate know what they are called. Looking all over for them for that very same reason. To prevent death by attacking camp chairs when I open my canopy.😂
Brilliant work. If the cover of that narrow storage section on the left-hand size ever gets loose over time, you can use rare earth magnets at the front to keep the cover secure. I too use a pair of braided paracord (that I did myself) attached to my fridge slide. I use them as my pull handles when sliding the fringe out.
Thanks mate! Yeah my original idea was to secure that extra piece with magnets but found the fit was nice and tight so didn’t need them - but will add them if it loosens in future 🙂
Great work. Look like a bought one. The soft handles are definitely the biz. 👍
Great idea for leaver bar for the slides, will copy that :D
You've done an awesome job on those drawers. The whole canopy fit out, actually. Looks very professionally done. I just don't know how you managed to crawl into the canopy behind the drawers. Lol
Well done mate.
Haha it wasn’t easy, and was quite annoying when I kept forgetting tools so had to crawl in and out 😂
Looking forward to that on board air compressor install coming up 👍
I have built many fit outs and speak from experience as a cabinet maker/shopfitter of 37 years. Those small screws will more than likely rip out on rough tracks. 17 mm bottoms, fronts n back. Screw 12mm side on the outside with glue. Runners screwed though the side into bottom with at least 45mm screws or if draws needed lower use small T nuts counter bored inside of sides and metal threads to fix runners to draws via T nuts. Carpet or paint internally. This construction will have your draws lasting life time.
Ive built my whole fit out in a similar fashion. 10K of trips with some horrible roads and still holding up. For the weight and over pre made ones if i have to rebuild every 5 years ill wear it. The alloy angle and glue gives it a surprising amount of strength.
Hi Pedro. Nice observation. What glue would you recommend for fixing marine carpet to plywood 😎
Artificial grass adhesive 👍
This is awesome you have done a fantastic job, will be showing hubby this video as we are doing are set at the moment thanks 😊
Thanks 😁
This is a great DIY build, fantastic job 👏👏👏
This is seriously impressive, your workmanship is incredible... and I'm amazed at how you crawl about in the canopy. Enjoy your hard work. 👏🏼
This is another awesome build, Daniel and Bianca. Definitely gives me the confidence to want to try my hand at my own DIY projects. Love watching your canopy build come to life. Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks mate, appreciate that and good luck with your build!
Great build Daniel. Could not do it myself mate.
Nice work young fella 👍. I like that you used 9mm very smart.
Thanks mate 🙂
I am impressed with your methodical attention to detail and way you show the 'correct' way to do things. Like some short cuts are possible, but you show applying clamps, etc to ensure a secure straight build. Oh and to add, you can use Wood based 'nutserts' (like you do for your metal parts) that allow you to use metal screws to secure your backboard and also allows them to be removed a lot easier than standalone wood screws.
Thanks mate really appreciate that!! Good to know regarding the wood rivnut equivalent too - cheers! 😁
@@exploreboundthey're called t nuts
Would love to see a cost breakdown of your canopy setup! Thanks :)
You always do a quality job
Stellar build!! Coming up a treat, always enjoy watching your DIY video, absolute perfectionist 👍
Thanks mate 🙂
Jolly, good show, old chap.
Very impressive mate keep up the good work
Nice job, bloody well built, looks solid👍
Great work! Looks very professional.
Great job and great video. I was screaming the entire video flip the drawer angle iron handles upside down. Then you can release and pull the drawers with one hand
Thanks mate! Haha I did consider that, but when I did a trial run there just wasn’t enough grip on the alum angle that was now tilted forwards close to 45 degrees
@@explorebound Gotcha!! Well still an amazing job. Very motivating!
What a great build! The paracord for the handles is a great idea.
Daniel, a very easy handle fix is to cut a piece of the aluminium angle, attach it upside down with rivets to existing angle.
Then you just drop your fingers into the slot created between draw front and aluminium angle, pull forward on it, the entire length af aluminium channel pivots, draw opens.
No flimsy rope handles (sorry Bianca), keeps everything firm and tidy, professional look.
Gave that a trial during the build and didn’t work well at all unfortunately - not enough grip on the 12mm alum angle when it’s pressed down as it tilts forward almost 45 degrees. Para cord handles are strong and durable - will outlast the drawers I reckon!
@@explorebound fair enough, happy wife, happy life, I hear yah!!
Great work
Love the build
Thank's for sharing
Looks awesome dude, great job. Might I suggest an aluminium angle bar across the complete top edge of the top, will stop the board bending down into the drawers when you put heavy boxes etc on top, and if you put holes in it, will be a good tie down point.
They look mint!!!
Well done!
Agree with more drawers means more organisation, but just add more internal dividers (longways as well, full height of drawer from front to rear) and you can have the equivalent of more drawers. Save space weight and money on drawer slides. Not to mention if you want to resize your division of space it’s a lot easier to move an internal divider than remake and re mount drawers
Nice work! Definitely a different approach that we've seen but looks great and the key point is having built it yourself, you always be able to work on it if needed. Safe travels 🍻
You are pretty good at fabricating stuff. Accurate measurements, neat cuts, thought through design. Maybe its time to get some gear and do some aluminium welding?
Thanks mate! I’ve been wanting to get into welding - perhaps with the next project 🙂
Beautiful job!
You guys should make and sell them handles on your shop
Agreed. I would buy them.
Great effort looks amazing
Well done
Great work Daniel, they look amazing and very professional and love the paracord handles too, cheers
Love this build!
Awesome work guys
those are super impressive for a DIY set, looks good. hope they hold up
Thanks for the video. Love your work and how it inspires me to do my own DIY.
Looks great guys. Well done.
Looks very smick, well done 👏
Mate bloody awesome work well done!
If you flip the bit of angle that you put on the locks you can use it as a handle
Awesome work mate!!
Mate I'm fascinated with watching u build stuff, 100% professional work, u should start up yr own business, love yr work 👌👍
Great work. Looks awesome mate🤙
Mint job fella
Awesome job man, you have done really well!
Great Work mate
Awesome build Daniel ,
I used Velcro to hold the top down on my drawers👍🏼
That’s an awesome job mate well done I would definitely have them
Your explanation on your hole build has been fantastic, I am so jealous and want you to come and build mine for me lol
Thanks mate 🙂
Job well done dude they look awesome for a DIY job 👌🏼🔥🔥🔥
Awesome job mate 👍
Will come in handy when the perth 4wd shows are on to store merch 😂👌
Great video mate
Mate you have done a magnificent job on your new build keep up the great work your channel is a pleasure to watch and I wish you safe travels when you get on the road 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟great job son great job
Great job mate, well done - looks pretty schmick 👌👌👍 your attention to detail is top notch mate. Hope they give you years of happy trouble free service.
Just keep in mind though, and hope it helps others, that marine ply has no benefit at all over standard ply yet it’s more expensive due to the grading of sheets.
Many people believe it’s more water proof because it’s “marine” ply but it’s not, same glue and same construction, same longevity too.
I’ve done a clip on my channel if people want further info … but yes, use standard ply, it will stay as straight and as strong ( just make sure you grab straight sheets - difficult if buying from the big green box ) and save your cash towards your next camping trip away folks. Marine ply is a little like snake oil or a placebo effect.
😉👍👍
Looks good want to build me a set 😅
Great build mate, tidy as. Just wanted to point out, u were using a tape measure, not a measuring tape. A measuring tape is used by a tailor, and a tape measure is used by u! 🤣👍🍻🎯🇦🇺
Please stop!! You make me want to change my set up each video… seriously though, great work! Looks like I’m about to change my drawer set up… really like the rear wall, so annoying when something drops behind!
The drawer set up looks on point! Well done.
I wonder if the drawer side walls could have been made to soak up that wasted space from the runners and mounting rails by making them wider just above the runners. So just the small bottom section of the drawers is narrower, the size of the runners, but the rest is wider to bring the drawers closer to each other
Nice and clean mate! Damn that was a lot of screws 😂😂
Don't sell yourself short mate. Those drawers look unreal.
Fancy doiny a set for my patrol? 😂
Good work, its "yours" much more for filling!
Probably dont need that much loctite on the screws holding down the ally tube on the canopy floor. I reckon those rivnuts will spin before that threadlocker gives way
I know looks and showing off is 80% of the game when it comes to off-roading but it makes you wonder how much the weight affects things vs just bolting in some plastic drawers in the back and taking a folding table. Fully loaded my Impreza is only 1600kg with me in it and in certain situations it does better than my brothers cruiser thanks to that weight difference.
Nice work mate! Looks good! Just wondering would you be blocking ventilation to the fridge with the wall behind it? Would it need a vent there?
So far it hasn’t been a problem at all after 3 weeks on the road - there’s heaps of room between the fridge and the false wall 😊
Schmick mate.👍
Maaaaaaaate awesome job . I'd reckon you'd get payed to put that setup in other dudes fourbees. Love your eye for detail. Pro job I reckon. Cheers for the Vid.. 👍🍻
Great work mate. I am so copying parts of your canopy when I rebuilt mine. The drawers will be 100% copy. Also buying some merch to say thank you for sharing.
Thanks mate, glad to hear the build gave you an idea or two! Massive thanks for the merch order too, that's in the mail to you now so should be with you shortly. 😁
@@explorebound thanks mate. Appreciated.
What carpet do you use? Think you have mentioned Bunnings before
Good job, very neatly done and a professional look for the end product. Are you going to mount a fire extinguisher next to the twelve volts system just in case as a lot of it particularly the battery being behind the panels.
I hadn’t thought about because I’ve got my extinguisher mounted under the front passenger seat - great idea though might add a second there!
Love all your videos but I have to ask, Did you leave her on the Gibb River Road?
where i go all that carpet would be red brown in no time lol
Hi Dan great vid mate im about to fit out my MRT canopy aswel. Im curious what size rivnuts did you use on this project m4, m6, m8, m10?
Great job but I'm a bit worried about the fridge fan air flow
So far so good, been on the road for the last 3 weeks and fridge hasn’t missed a beat 🙂 there’s quite a lot of space between the fridge and the false wall
🎉
I am thinking of buying drawers. Is there no way to install them without drilling the holes?
what size of bench vice(IRWIN) do you use?
Is that a 'IRWIN Record 150mm Mechanics Vice' ?
Why the bolt down of the first rail end up at such an off-kilter angle? It looks like it got fixed by the next shot though.
It was just sitting to one side while I was giving the bolts their first spins, they pulled straight once tightened (should have included that in the video haha)
And what are you thinking for the other side of the Canopy setup?
Nice job mate, where did you get the Rivnut tool?
It’s a ‘Kango’ brand from Bunnings
Why did you not just choose to make your drawers out of aluminum?
For extra added strength you should have used galvanized square boxed tube.
and blow your gvm by 300kgs
Well done
