The mini with Skid Coupler can do skid steer work, just not fast.... BUT i can do it, and better than what I just saw. Might have to make a video... Oh, when I buy my Skid Steer, I already own the forks, a bucket ect.. Win Win

    I think it depends on what type of work you do. For instance I’m into building and remodeling. We do a lot of additions and decks. I was having to subcontract out my light excavation. It always seemed like a headache to get the timing right and it was costing me more on my bottom line. I bought a mini excavator this spring and I pretty much had it pay for itself this summer by doing my own excavation. So next summer that’s a 100% profit in my pocket. I most likely buy an skid loader next summer. But my point is you need to figure out what will fit your needs the best.

    I have owned a Gehl 5635 skid, Case 1845C skid, and now have a John Deere CT322. I also own a IHI mini-ex. my property is a 106 acre steep mountain side property in Oregon coastal mountains. Between my general contracting business and home. I would saying I am able to make 6x-10x time income with my CT322 but that is because of the attachments I own. 6' foot brush hog $185.00-$235/hr land clearing and mowing, extreme root grapple, pallet forks, 1/2 yard bucket with removable digging bar teeth, and my favorite attachment is the ABI SR3.
    I have own and sold my Bradco 609 backhoe skid-steer attachment with 3 bucket sizes. The hoe attachment are terribly clumsy, terrible to store, terrible to move around on the job site, terrible to transport from down the road from job to the yard. for the $12,000 price look for a used mini excavator you will be much happier.
    Around the house and farm the mini-ex get used 80% with the jobs I do for the land management, digging pond, trenches, cleaning ditches, building new access roads, taming slopes, culverts, and digging stumps ect. On my Job sites the Track-steer is used 80% of the time with the exception of the trenches and footings for the mini-ex.

    Down south, clay and more clay- skid, or min x.

    I dont use a skid enough so i may be biased but def mini. Loading is no prob if proper site prep/material drops are established, moving pallets isnt an issue if u keep straps in ur trailer, and depending on pallet weight may not even be needed. Just use ur blade tip and bucket to lift it/set it on top. If pallet is freighted then u chance breaking it and making a mess. Thats where straps or chains are handy. Once u get the hang it only takes maybe 45 seconds or so to rig up 2 straps if theyre on hand. The skids definately can move yardage quicker no question. But again, planning goes along way.the skids have a TON of handy attachments. Minis certainly have alot too. I tjink minis tend to leave the sites with less hand touch up work but others will say thats just due to not being familiar enough with skid op...which may be. Ultimately i think it all depends on what ur planning on using it for the majority of time. For us its a stumper, boulder/stone placer, digger, grader, trencher, and loose brush loader. Things like that are easier to have the mini i feel. Well....grading with a skid is actually pretty nice....

    Started my business this year with a Kubota TLB. My primary jobs are re-surfacing stone driveways and adding stone parking pads. Yeah a skid could get it done faster but, for new guys starting out, you dont have the phone ringing off the hook 24/7 needing work done. Keeping overhead costs down is as equally important. Could have bought a used skid, but didnt want to deal with the potential of equipment breaking down on a big machine - that would kill a new business owner.

  • @billsdogsinaz
    @billsdogsinaz Před 4 lety +1

    I have been looking at a Kubota BX23S like A Ritter Bit has. The problem I see with it is that the FEL and Backhoe are fairly weak. If you buy the tractor without the backhoe it's about $7k less. If you don't buy the mower deck it's $2k less. I think it would make more sense to buy the large Compact instead of the subcompact and get a better loader and a box blade. The use either a Lawn Tractor (I have a JD X300 already). For about $23k you can buy the smallest Kubota Mini EX. That will fit thru a standard fence. You could also buy a Ditchwitch or Vermeer Mini Skid that will also fit thru a fence. All in for about $75k. or the cost of a skid.
    Now the reason I picked things that could for thru a small fence is that most people here all have fenced in yards. Most of the lawn care is done by guys with a mower, a blower and a trailer. Most of the skid steer guys are doing new construction. Most of the ex guys are digging pools or foundations.
    I'm not sure who gets paid the most but the competition is huge for large jobs if you have a skid, Ex and a dump truck. Also the guy with a mower and a blower.
    Tree trimmers are probably making the most per hour. At least that's the guy taking most of my money.

And the Mecala MCR is more of a mini excavator, but they are good for saving money instead of buying two different vehicles, and are good for small projects.

    Skidsteer is a landscape destroyer in the task you have set forth and needs a lot of sqare footage to do the work. The mini-EX is light on landscape, doesn't use lots of sqaure footage to do the task. If you need to transport material with mini-EX, just hang a container over the front dozerblade and load it with the excavator

    Interesting viewpoints. Down here (NZ) I would say excavators outnumber skid steer by a significant margin, with the latter mostly being on building sites to move material.
    Last related company I worked for had, with normal replacements taking into account, at least 20 excavators in their fleet from 1.3T to over 20T (over that, they'd just hire for the specific job)and NO skid steers, because they were not suitable for the work. All had trench, rock and weed (the larger, wide ones for loose material) buckets and some had picks for hard materials, etc. With quick hitches/couplers on all but the lightest machines, swapping out buckets was a speedy affair and so there wasn't really an issue with a small bucket limiting material transfer - and, remember, buckets are normally reversable for cleaner material pick up. There was a comment made about forks for the s/steer for shifting pallets, but they are also available for most excavators or, as we did for some special tools, make a set up - otherwise use strops, as we generally did.
    Oh, forgot, we did have a couple of small, articulated loaders for when there was a fair bit of material to be moved and, when there was a LOT of earthworks involved, we either hired machines or sub-contracted the work out.
    In the end, might simply come down to personal preference - and, perhaps, if s/steers are so common you could look at an excavator and do subcontract work for those who don't have one but still find it more economical to have someone do it faster and neater than have an operator in a s/steer messing around? Get on-line and check out some of the attachments available for each machine - you may be surprised just what is available for each, like rock breakers, auger drives for pilings/fencing, etc. that can add to the revenue earning potential of the machines.
    Oh, and check out the Duckgirl videos - wheeled rather than tracked, but same operating principle.
    Lastly, who the heck gave the thumbs down?

    First time in the shovel? Slooooow. 😁 For residential and budget wise. mini x 1st. power barrel 2nd. This combination will get everything you need done, with standard truck/trailer combos and licencing. You need a lot more money to step up to having a mini x and skidsteer. Your not just buying the skidsteer. Your buying a second heavy spec truck (preferably a tandem or triaxle), a new low boy and a driver with proper licensing for that combo. Having a mini and skid is a big step up. A power barrel like KC70 is a cheap bridge gap until you can afford a big change, and rent a skidsteer when required. Skid steer only makes a mess of finishing residential like hardscaping. Great vids i like them.

  • @groundtoglory

    We started with a mini ex. Next purchase was the skid steer (and a couple more minis behind it). For us that was absolutely the right order. Truthfully our margins are better on jobs we use the minis for, ie sewer/water work, but there are times you desperately need the skiddy. And if you’re gonna get a skid steer put an mp bucket on, it’s about the handiest thing since tracks IMO. Makes cleanup a breeze, you can have smooth cutting edges and teeth at the same time, and you can load the hell out of a tri axle you barely clear the side of.

      @groundtoglory Před 5 lety +1

      Oh, and one more thing, check out the cat 304.5. Its not gonna replace the skid steer, but it’ll definitely give you some skid steerish capabilities on a mini excavator. @camilosalazar1911 Před 2 lety

      I agree, would love to see a Mecalc in this same test....A wheeled mecalac, you can drive to the site, it's much faster than any tracked machine to move around and with 3 steering modes, allows great flexibility for moving or repositioning the machine and you don't mess up the ground like tracked machines do. the 3 piece boom allows for farther and closer working range which means less moving the machine. A mecalac is certainly much better than a TLB, but it's also 4x as expensive. its lifting and breakout force is far superior to any excavator or skidsteer in its weight class due to excellent geometry and mechanical/hydraulic design. One thing I don't like about the Mecalac is how loud it is specially when reved up, not sure why they don't use a quieter engine. Also, it is not as efficient as a dedicated loader when it comes to loading or moving material. Another downside is that the controls are completely different and very specialized so there's a learning curve...not a good thing if you have multiple operators, but not a problem if you're an owner/operator. Another advantage is that you can tow a dump trailer with it which allows you to carry all your attachments to where your need them and move dirt longer distances than just 20 or 50 feet. Another great thing about the mecalac is that you can also grab all your attachments backwards which allows more flexibility and opportunities with all your attachments. Unfortunately, the 11MWR that I wanted was going to cost me $250k for the machine plus another $100k for all the attachments....but it's a dream machine...some day.

  • @wb5mgr

    The main reason that backhoe are still popular on the marketplace are because of large construction sites. A TLB can traverse large sites and even drive down paved road faster than any other piece of construction equipment other than a bucket loader. So when you need a piece of equipment they can do pretty much everything, and you need it to run around a massive sight from here to there, the TLB fits that bill.
    On the other hand, the skid steer is really replacing them for most material movement tasks… Especially as long as you don’t have to drive down a road or something like that. The skid steer doesn’t have the height and visibility of a backhoe, but that’s about all it gives up. With all the attachments you can get for a skid steer that weren’t shown in this video, it’s pretty incredible what you can do. I would say the skid steer would be my first option because of the fact that almost anything you could do with a mini excavator other than dig trenches you could get an attachment for a skid steer that could do it as well or better. Heck they even make trenching attachments for skid steer machines.
    Obviously if you have a job that is pretty much all digging in the excavator is king, it’s also a better machine for demo with the ability to reach up high with that bucket and smash things from the top. But once you start carrying that material away to the bin or the truck… there’s no contest.
    I’m on the other side of the fence from that gentleman, I would own a skid steer and rent an excavator when I need it. The deal about my theory is this. You can basically guarantee that a midsize skid steer will always do the job that you need done. However you never know exactly which size excavator will be the best size for the job. So if you’re going to rent a piece of equipment because you can only own one thing, you’re better off to rent the excavator and get exactly the size that you need.

The skid loaders are very versatile pieces of equipment, which can get into places the larger TLB would not fit into.
