I love that you haven't forgotten Nightwish as you have moved on in your journey. Thank you for remembering that they are in a very large part responsible for the growth of your channel.

I am forever grateful for Tarja and her operatic singing, because without it, I'm convinced that Tuomas would not have gone in the musical style that he did, but Floor is by far my favorite Nightwish singer.
Tarja is for me. Again I started at 12-13. It is a TV show from 1999. One of their first live performances ever The guys except Sammy are just back from their military service. I believe Tarja is 21. Floor is 38. Tarja at 38 is quite a diff singer. I like Floor’s take. But I just adore Baby Nightwish and the Kitee 5. And both singers sing to fit Tuomas’s vibe at the time. @@Kulta87 Not to mention that all the original arrengments for that song was made by Tarja. It is lot easier to grab a song already build it and decorated it and twist it a bit to make it look better. That's why covers that really matters are what change the form of the song in a long way. But you know easy is more affordable.
@@andresweiland3714 Interesting... I've wondered many times why is it that their concerts are focused on older songs, even though they have plenty of new material to use.
Almost like they don't trust the new songs to make a great concert.
I thought that the new songs were less popular among the fans due to Tuomas change in composition, but after reading your comment, I think that you have a valid point about how the singer can embellish and bring "color" to a song or not...
I agree. I think Tarja was necessary for Tuomas and band to develope their style. But Tarja soon became a limitation because she's quite one dimensional as a singer. Anette was one necessary intermediate but with Floor they finally reached their full potential becayse she can pretty much sing anything.

I like that we got those singers. that is the end of the argument for me.
Don't forget that Tarja was young when she started to sing with Nightwish. And Floor had a lot of experience when she started to sing with Nightwish. If people want a fair competition, compare Tarja when she was the lead singer of Nightwish with Floor when she was the lead singer of After Forever. I love both singers and I just love Nightwish, any era.
Floor has always been more versatile...right from the start.

Tarja was not the first or only lead singer of a (metal) band to sing in an operatic style. Floor was also singing a lot in an operatic style when she was with After Forever. Also was Sharon den Adel with Within Temptation. The Gathering singer Marike Groot was singing in an operatic way in 1992.
After Tarja left, Tuomas didn't want a singer that sounded like Tarja. They deliberately chose Anette for her poppy singing style. Therefore Nightwish could evolve to a more versatile metal style. Before that awful letter to Tarja, that should have be kept personal, she had already decided to leave the band to be able to focus on her solo career. So she had planned to leave Nightwish anyway and they all knew and agreed. Without the open letter you all would blame Tarja for leaving, thinking it was her fault the band would never sound the same again.
From 2005 Nightwish was ready to change and Anette made this possible. Some of the very best Nightwish songs were written in this era. When she left and Floor was there, Nightwish could evolve even more. Not just because Floor was the more versatile singer. She had to learn first, by stretching her talents and crash and burn (-out), how much she was capable of and what was too much to maintain her balance and health. The period with her own band ReVamp, and especially the period she couldn't do anything anymore, has made her a strong, well balanced band member and singer. Floor loves the stage, loves performing, knows how to contribute to make a song even better. She knows how to create a song. This is experience. She might have left everything up to Tuomas (and Marko) in creating music if she had started in 1996 with Nightwish. Everything turned out in the best possible way.

It is the Garden where Jesus went to pray to Heavenly Father. Where he made the infinite atonement. He suffered every affliction and pain of sin for all humanity for all time.
What I love the most about their older songs is how quickly the guys played their instruments, I mean Tarja did a great job vocally, on the new version I love every single thing, my favourite line though, which "Without You The Poetry Within Me Is Dead" I feel like Floor evoked a lot more emotion in it, not that much pain per se, but rather the angst of a poet in love with love and him begging to that person not to abandon him
I saw Floor perform this in Baltimore on the Decades tour. The whole show was pure magic!

In the whole singer discussion one may not forget that the whole band, floor and also the live composition itself are more mature now than in the older videos with Tarja.
If they would play the same song today with Tarja it would also be different than that 1999 version.

Shure👍 but, musicly and in quality it would change and i think i can say Tarja is also a better singer now,vocaly there would always be a big difference in interpretation between Tarja and Floor,wich,in my opinion,is a good thing,so we have a choise who or wich version we prefer,nothing to do with "better" just different.🤘
I believe that one of the reasons why Nightwish have grown into what to hey are today - is that Floor first got the call in 2012. If she has got it in 2005 (they wanted her, but didn't call because of diff circumstances). But in 2012 they were all ready!
If she had started back in 2005, Floor might not have been so versatile in her storytelling, but more operatic, because at that time, she really liked to incorporate opera style in most of her songs (she wrote almost all the After Forever songs, after Mark left - and that was not what Tuomas wanted...
Luckily we will never know..
Facts is that she is the perfect storyteller for Tuomas's lyrics - because she makes them her own - without changing the deeper thoughts in the stories - Floor actually enhances them.
A Great thing to say, that every member of Nightwish has been equally important to develop and improve the band's music and performance, not only the singers but EVERYONE!
Yo! You're always on time! Just today, Nightwish announced their new album, Yesterwynde! It's going to be a hell of an adventure, and I'm really looking forward to getting out and seeing your reaction.
And don't forget, the first 'single' off the album comes out May 21st entitled "Perfume of the Timeless".
It's crazy to realize that out of the founding members, only Tuomas and Emppu are still with the band today, and even in this 2019 video.
New drummer, second new bassist, second new singer, the addition of a "yes" player(as in: "Troy, what instruments do you play?"-"Yes")... but the band's soul is intact.
I recall an interview question asking Tarja what would become of the band if she left, the short answer was "Tuomaswish". But I reckon it was mostly "Tuomaswish" right from the start :)

I love Tarja and she was soooo good when she was younger ... BUT Floor's voice gives me goosebumbs like noone and when she sings ,, classical '' it is just so strong ( mid notes ) and her interpretation and ability to tell story is something so special.

Every singer, ever band member brings their all to these performances, they all were chosen, they were meant to perform those songs at that time and that's why trying to talk negatively about one or the other is so tiresome.
Have your preference but be kind about it. I enjoy all three singers and usually I enjoy them most on the songs from their own eras. This song really profits from Tarja's darker a bit more delicate sound for me, it's beautifully mysterious. :)

Hi, you're right: the- let's called it- Floor version is so unique and rich and... don't know... beautiful. But the original version, the one with Tarja on stage is in 1998, or maybe '99... This Is a revolution! Nightwish changed the way to feel metal music, the way to delivery metal music... they change metal music in it's intimacy: this is Art! 🙂
I remember they changed up the structure of the orchestral arrangements for all the older songs when bringing them live, all the parts have been rerecorded for the backing tracks, it was also to fit both Marko and Troy in too.

im late again... this is one of the very rare nightwish songs which I mostly like on album. live too obviously, but the album version is so polished and sounds amazing.

Ahhhhh Chase back with Nightwish and the look on his face starting at 15:26 is priceless. Gethsemane is my message notification on my phone 😊. I love all three Nightwish leading ladies but Floor as lead is my favourite flavour and Buenos Aires 2018 is where Floor breathed new life in to a number of Nightwish classics that pre-date her time with the band and made them her own. I've been a fan of Nightwish since their first album came out. I saw them live in London with Tarja at both the Apollo and the Astoria, I own all the albums and DVDs (three different versions of Once, which remains my favourite album). I still prefer Floor overall within the rest of Nightwish as a whole, I think her voice rounds out their sound in more ways than Tarja, even though Tarja's operatic vocals work beautifully on their earliest stuff and there are a couple of songs I prefer her version over Floor's (Phantom being one of them).
I think you're absolutely right to point out that without any of their singers, including Anette, (who is often just thrown aside by everyone!) that each of them has brought their unique talents to making Nightwish successful.
Will be looking forward to their 10th studio album in September and seeing you react to that!
This is one of the first songs that made me fall in love with them in the 90's. Most likely that is why I prefer the first version. It brings back the memories of that decade. Another band I loved was After forever. But After forever changed when Mark left and created Epica. It was such a great time in seeing those great musicians grow up and give us so much.

We all love Nightwish in all of it's forms, but one thing I love is that there are people out there discovering them for the very first time. I think that's amazing❤
This is as far as I know the earliest NW or #babywish footage. And Tarja and Floor are great friends. Support eachother. Tara gave Floor her blessings to join NW. They met in 02 when Floor's then band opened for NW in Europe over the summer.
Tarja played with floor at FVMF9 in 2013. Called for Love and no hate.
So as the 2 Queens hugged it out during the singing of Over the hills, how about respect both their wishes. Tarja and Floor even had a live Q&A on IG during lockdown.

Thru some hard times, sickness and physical pain its been the healing power of Nightwish and The Gathering running thru my veins healing from within. I'm grateful for every songwriter and musician who offers up the magic in their soul for the rest of us to feed upon and enjoy. Music is that extra dimension that allows us release and relief from the dimensions that rule our physical world. I'd not want to experience a world without it.

Nightwish has had three great singers. I've always been in love with Floor's voice since I heard her sing on After Forever over 20 years ago, but I first met Nighwish with Oceanborn and Tarja. Tarja will always be the voice that put the group there and that probably paved the way for many other singers with similar characteristics within metal.
Well, the 1999 version was their first public appearance in Finnish national television in January 1999. So it was not a real gig and most of the audience was probably not metal heads. That explains alittle bit of that "golf-clap".

Hey Chase. Longtime subscriber here... huge Nightwish fan from Phoenix... good to see you back to our beloved band. As several others have said in their comments, I think Tarja is a terrific talent as is exemplified by her ongoing performances and collaborations with Within Temptation and now with Marko Hietala... but, for me, Floor is the one. Now, as you said, Chase, I came to Nightwish a few years ago through a reaction to Floor with Nightwish, and fell in love with her and them. I noted that you said you had a chance to see them perform live in San Francisco, so I am thinking it might have been that same May 18th, 2022 performance at the historic Warfield Theater, that Carol, my wife of 43 years, and I got to travel from Phoenix to see. We loved every second of it, from standing in line outside the venue with the thousands of wonderful fans, and throughout the entire concert. Good to see you back reacting to them again, my friend. Worth the wait Chase, awesome reaction! I love the 2019 Decades tour version so much. The original is on the album Oceanborn, which was recorded before they ever started collaborating with an entire orchestra. I believe they only had a string quartet and a flute on that album. The new orchestrated backing tracks for the Decades tour brought so much detail to the sound and made it so full and sort of magical to me. And to me, Floor is such a story teller with her vocals, and that just elevates the song to a new height for me. None of that is to hate on the 1990's version of course - I've been here for 20 years and loving it all. But I just love to see them elevate their music even beyond the original awesomeness.

90s Nightwish had so much energy. Tarja was just this girl from Kitee who sang for the town nerd Tuomas's band. Nothing was polished, no one was cool or pretty, they were just some dweebs from a small town who wanted to rock out.

This one the songs that for me is a Tarja song, but that's mostly because I've grown up with Nightwish since -98. But the Decades version with Floor has a special place in my heart, most importantly because of Floor I was able to hear those old songs live for the first time ever (Most of the older song were not played in years, and I couldn't attend to Nightwish shows when Tarja was in the band). Oceanborn is such a great album, in my personal top 2 with Once.
On another note, Chase, we have to talk about Wintersun. You made a reaction to Sons Of Winter And Stars some 3 years ago, but never really got back in to them. I humbly request that you would react to their song Time (Live at Sonic Pump Studios), it is an absolute masterpiece of music. This band is amazing, and the mastermind Jari Mäenpää is often said to be right up there with Tuomas as the top tier composers coming from Finland in modern day. They also have a new album Time II coming out on August with more epic metal for you to check out as well.

The first time I heard any of Nightwish's music was from the Tarja era. I just so resonated with the melodic style of their music with Tarja's operatic vocals. I love hearing her hit the high notes in songs like Wishmaster. I got to see Nightwish in concert in 2015 in Louisville, KY when they were on tour with Delain (did I get that right?) and another band (can't remember their name).
I actually like all 3 of the vocalists. Floor seems to be the most diverse vocally. She can have moments when she growls, she can hit high notes really well and she can also sound much, but not exactly, like Tarja at times like in this song Gethsemane and the song Stargazers from their live album at Wembley. I liked Annete Olson's voice also, although you can tell that she definitely has her style and vocal range. Annette did a good job on a live version of the song Sahara : )
AND Nightwish will have another album coming out in September!

Hello Chase, welcome back to Nightwish. Gethsemane (Greek: ΓεΘσημανἰ, Gethsēmani, from Hebrew: גת שמנים, Gath-shmanim - literally "oil press") or Gethsemane is a garden or court at the foot of the Mount of Olives famous because Jesus prayed there on the night before his crucifixion . East of Jerusalem is the Mount of Olives; between the Mount of Olives and that city lies the Kidron Valley, containing Gethsemane.
BTW, although the DVD release is dated 2019, the Decades concert in Buenos Aires was already in 2018.
The 1999 recording was before Marko joined Nightwish (2001 to early 2021) and took over Sami Vänskä's place.
I fully realize that Floor's version would not have sounded what it does now without the input and virtuality of both her predecessors. Tarja was also very young in 1999 (22 years old, born August 17, 1977) and was only at the beginning of her singing career. Her own style has developed even further since then. Anette Olson also made a major contribution by adding a different sound with her voice and broadening the sound of Nightwish. Floor was only lucky that her voice was already better trained and, above all, added life experience and empathy. She is highly sensitive and that benefits Nightwish's songs. She now manages to combine the forces of both her predecessors and makes Floor, with the addition of her own qualities, (for me) the most beloved front woman of Nightwish. So it's not that I don't like Tarja, I just prefer Floor's attitude, commitment and dedication. (I just find the former innocent Tarja more pleasant than the current Tarja).
For me this will always and forever be a Tarja song!!! They were all so young yet so freaking talented!!!

I think it's fine to have favourite vocalists, and even more fine to have favourite vocalists for particular songs, the only problem is when it becomes a competition or if you mistake personal taste for objectivity. Floor is generally my favourite and I realise that is at least partly because she was my first, however there are songs (and even passages) where I prefer Tarja or Anette. I enjoy them all!
Oh my! I still remember watching this from Finnish tv-show called ’Lista TOP 40’ (a show you needed to watch each Friday evening). They also played ’Sacrament of Wilderness’ and that was a life changer for me! Later at the end of ’99 I got the Oceanborn -album and that was it… Still going on with the Nightwish journey! 🤗
So crazy, while watching I was like yeah two different version cause two different lead singers, and both are awesome. But then it hit that of course we have a different drummer (Jukka & Kai), a different bassist (Sami & Marko) and Troy came as an addition. With the changes happening one at a time it kinda hits more here in a direct "comparison"

When you listen to the studio version, you'll get to understand that, especially in those times, it was, I dare to say that, the best song on the album.

I'm a little sad though because concert version lacks much compared to album version. For egzample: the back vocals were a great part od this song but here they are non existemt or week. That makes me feel that you hadn't been able to hearthis song as its was meant to be.
The linę: Without you... (With echoeing voise: without you)... all the poetry within me is dead always made me shiver.
The same situation goes with the line: I knew you never before... (And echoeing over it, starting over the word "before": I see you nevermore...) It was so amazing and the life version, though it Has it own kind of beauty could not mirror the perfect studio version this time. I Hope you'll find time to listen once to the album version.
