What an atmosphere. Shame the Romanian lads didn't kick on really! Michael Hughes was an underrated player for us. When I look back at videos from this era I can see how effective he was and just got on with things. He could take a good set piece and scored the odd goal.

Just watched him score a nice goal v Germany from that era on another video.

Hughes was fantastic, plenty of pace, good feet and could pass

How they didn't kicked on? Raducioiu scored a goal and Dumitrescu made an wonderfull pass at the penalty.
I think you didn't appreciated romanian talent enough and put them on the bench after that.
I guess karma is a bitch. You were eliminated two times in a row by Astra Giurgiu (a rural team) 🤣

    • @MartinParnham
      @MartinParnham Před rokem +2

This was one game. They were sh*t the rest of the time. Dumitrescu got shipped out because he was past it but, yeah, don't let your Romanian bias get in the way of facts. They were good in one game. Have a medal.
Not sure what Astra Giurgiu has to do with anything but I guess things have worked out pretty well for them since they beat West Ham twice...
By the way, I wasn't having a pop at anyone in the original post. You seem to have been triggered by a fairly innocuous comment which probably tells me all I need to know.

@@MartinParnham No, i don't have something against your comment. Maybe i don't speak that good english.
But i am triggered by how romanian players were treated in England in the past. Mutu also. All of his teammates was snorting coke, but only Mutu was tested. Because he was starting to become top scorer in Premier League.
Ionel Ganea at Wolverhampton also treated bad.
But then again, that is no problem. That generation has beaten England twice in 1998 and 2000, so it's ok 🤣.

"You're not singing any more!" I was there. Seat E17 in the lower east stand. Great memories from that era.

I love how this era of sky sports turned up everything to 11. You couldn't make out anything in the pub, it was just a tornado of sound.

You don't get these kinds of atmospheres in top flight anymore. You can only find these types of game in lower league football. Some of the best football and atmospheres can be found there in my opinion.

I was in the Bobby Moore Lower and the atmosphere was electric all night. One of the best games under the floodlights I’ve ever witnessed including the 4-1 win over Liverpool.

I was watching this match live on Sky Sports at my mate’s house who lives two doors away. I was a 13 year old kid back then and we heard the fans in the stadium screaming from the living room when Julian powered that in (was measured at a staggering 99mph!) as Upton Park was only half a mile from our houses

In WestHam's first 10 seasons in the PL 1993/94 to 2002/03 there was a draw in this fixture 7 times out of 10 (the 3 ManUtd wins weren't easy either
    0-1 95/96 Irwin cleared 1 off the goal-line
2-4 99/00 WestHam had chance for 3-3 just before 2-4 goal
3-5 01/02 WestHam took lead twice, it was all square at H/T took an 88th penalty from Beckham to finally kill the game off)
7 out of 10 draws is quite a good achievement for WestHam given that ManUtd completely dominated that era.
WestHam in the seasons they drew in that era came 13th (out of 22) in 1993/94 while ManUtd won title (& FAcup double)
1994/95 14th (out of 22) while ManUtd only lost title due to WestHam holding them to a draw on the final day
1996/97 14th Middlesbrough finished 18th & got relegated would've finished above WestHam had they not got 3pts deducted showing how close to relegation zone WestHam were that season while ManUtd won the title
1997/98 8th while ManUtd would've been champions had they drawn instead of lost just 1 of their games (or beaten WestHam at Upton Park).
1998/99 a rare 5th place but ManUtd won PL, FAcup & CL treble showing still a big gap between the 2 teams
2000/01 15th while ManUtd won title at a canter
2002/03 18th (relegated) while ManUtd won title.
There were 3x2-2 draws including 1996/97 & 2000/01, in both ManUtd had a 0-2 lead scoring the 0-2 goal in the 2nd half & WestHam still came back against odds to draw with the help of a pen in both and with Beckham previously scoring in both from outside the box and a ManUtd striker scoring their other in both.

I was privileged enough to have been a season ticket holder at the time. I was in the Bobby Moore upper row A. The atmosphere was electric and when Dicks equalised the noise was incredible. No keeper would have saved that penalty, even if they had caught it they would have ended up in the back of the net with the ball.

I must have heard you screaming as I was watching the match live at my mate’s house who lived two doors away! Upton Park was only half a mile away from our houses and we heard the fans in the stadium screaming when Julian thumped that ferocious penalty in! It was clocked at 99mph as the speed was mentioned the next day in the newspaper!

I could be wrong but I think this could also be the game Coca Cola used on one of its adverts. The fan who went blind and his brothers used to give him a running commentary

The London Stadium is an awful, sorry excuse for a football stadium. Upton Park was one of the classic football grounds in the country with the fans right on top of the players. West Ham lost a part of what made that club special in moving grounds.
