What's Happening at Mauna Kea? Native Hawaiians Dance in Protest to TMT

  • During our October 2019 vacation on the Island of Hawaii (Big Island), we hoped to visit the summit of Mauna Kea, the highest point in the state of Hawaii. However, we stumbled upon a peaceful protest that closed the road to Mauna Kea instead. Here's what we saw.
Why is Mauna Kea sacred to Native Hawaiians?
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Named for the god Wakea, the "sky father," Mauna Kea is considered a sacred place by the Native Hawaiians. The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) protests are a series of peaceful demonstrations conducted by kia'i (protectors) reacting to the choosing of Mauna Kea for the site location of the Thirty Meter Telescope.
The current protest blocks the road to Mauna Kea and has been going on since July 2019. It has sparked international attention and has been visited by celebrities including Damian Marley, The Rock, and Jason Momoa who have all declared their support.

The TMT is designed to be a zero waste facility. It has a closed loop system where all drains and pipes go to a central double-hulled waste containment tank. All waste is transported off the mauna for safe off-site processing. They're using leak detection systems, daily pipe/tank inspections for leaks, double-hulled pipes and spill containment and remediation procedures in case a spill should happen. The environmental safety and hazard engineering is excellent.
If there's an external discharge of a contaminant to the environment (such as hydraulic oil), then there's little to worry about. The TMT is being built in a geographic spot that doesn't threaten the aquifer or Lake Waiau. There are natural lava rock dikes that shore up water (and contaminants) to one spot. The summit region of maunakea is a cold, alpine desert with obvious low precipitation where most water gets trapped as sub-surface ice. Based on geochemistry, it takes about 2,000-5,000 years for water to permeate its way through all the rock and ash to the water table. Volcanic ash is nature's perfect filter due to its ionizing effect on toxins. The microorganisms in the aquifer system digest petroleum and other hydrocarbon based compounds. By the time the contaminants make it to the drinking water supply, they would've been neutralized naturally. Also, there's a huge volume of water flowing through the aquifer system, which greatly dilutes particulate concentrations.

the only problem is, that it's location is a burial area of the mountain and will cause more desecration to hawaiian chiefly burial geounds. if you do not know how a telescope works, it takes in light, that light takes in heat which can damage the telescope and to solve that htey would need the cold water of the mountain. if they ddi this however it could desimate the entire water system of the island and could virtually kill the entire island as well. politically it breaks a rule under the Us apology resolution, and a hawaii law on desecration.

The TMT observatory is being built on 1.5 acres of land of an 11,200 acre science reserve of a 52,500 acre forest range of a 33,000 ft (from sea floor), 1,000,000 year old volcano. It's being built at 13,200 ft above sea level in a cold, windy alpine desert with 40% less oxygen and air pressure and increased atmospheric radiation - not a life friendly place. Only algae, moss, lichen and some insects live up there. It's no biodiversity hot spot or tropical paradise. Lastly, they exhaustively surveyed the construction site (Build Site E) and confirmed that there's no heaiu, ahu, petroglyphs, kanu iwi, kanu piko, or place of pule or mele. The TMT isn't blocking anyone from religious, cultural, traditional or recreational use. Science and culture can coexist on the mauna.
