I am from the appalachian region in Georgia. Tom does a good job in Lawless. He sounds like my Grandparents did. It is refreshing for me to hear that accent again. Also my Papa (Grandfather) was born in 1903 and his nickname was Shine. There were many stills creekside in Georgia as well. I would add that my grandparents peppered a lot of sentences with kindly, reckon, well and y’all, but perhaps that was different in Virginia.

What fascinates me is how UK accents evolved as they came to America. Even music…Irish/Scottish evolved in America to be “mountain hymns”. Language can tell us so much about a person. My father and I were both so goofy when I grew up. We constantly switched accents too. I did this because I was ashamed of my Kentucky “redneck” accent. I’ve never been able to fully rid myself of it, but it’s much easier when I’m with people that I can sorta mimic.
I think the California accent is hilarious. 😊

His versatility as an actor is outstanding let alone the accents. Way back when I was interested who played Fitzgerald in the Revenant. The fact that the guy with that sort of southern american accent was actually british was not that surprising as a fact that I've already seen him several times before in Dunkirk, the Venom, Peaky Blinders etc having no idea it was the same actor.

Someone's probably already commented this by now, but technically his accent in Lawless isn't meant to be a Deep South Accent, as the story takes place in Virginia, which isn't considered part of the Deep South. It's really more a sort of "lower-class" country Southern accent. I'm not from Virginia so I can't say exactly how accurate it is, but it does sound pretty similar to the country accents I grew up with (I'm from the Piedmont region of NC)! Great video!!! (:

    • @bridgetclooney3453

Exactly right. It’s not the sweet Deep South of Louisiana or Georgia. I’m originally from Eastern KY & his character could be several different KY areas Definitely lower class (the way that TWANG rings) Glad you said something, I didn’t know how to articulate it. Tom Hardy’s American accent for Black Hawk Down was perfect. I never heard any region but def thought Twombly was US Soldier

3:12 linking R is also very likely to occur when the first word ends in a vowel. A lot of brits will say, for instance "Tuna (r)is my least favourite food", "I know where America (r)is", or even "Jessica (r)Alba", which I find hilarious but endearing too.

Hey. You had asked about someone commenting on Hardy’s “Deep south” American accent. His accent is very good for someone from England, but most southerners would be able to recognize that he’s not a native, perhaps other Americans wouldn’t though. To me it sounds like a mix of Appalachian and Georgian. As you pointed out, he draws out the word “is,” which is very common with people from Georgia. After doing some research on the film, Lawless actually takes place in northern Virginia (directly in the Appalachians), but was filmed in Georgia, which makes sense that Hardy’s accent would be a mix of the two, he probably had coaches from both areas. His accent could not really be described as Deep South, since that term refers to areas along the Gulf of Mexico (Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi), but he did a great job nonetheless. Hope you see this and hope it helps your understanding!

Thank you for your response. I am delighted that you liked Jeanne. Whenever I am really low I watch her and laugh my sides off even though I know the story. I love accents which is why I am a fan of a couple of English comedians, my favourite Scot, Kevin Bridges and also a few Irish comedians.
Just so that you know, I am born and raised in New York City. But I was trained away from what some call New Yorkeese. :-) I lived as a child a few years in Florida and some years early adult in Los Angeles. Since age 28 I have lived in 9 other countries and learned 5 languages.
I only share this because of something you mentioned regarding Tom Hardy which may be the same as my case. My English is a real mixture of sounds completely unintentional and it varies unconsciously depending on where I am and to whom I'm speaking. When I would visit my mother in the states I was always taken for a foreigner.
After living in Switzerland some years then moving to Germany the Germans thought I was Swiss. When that faded I still had some accent but they always thought it Dutch or Scandinavian but NEVER USA which pleased me enormously.
In truth, if I were with you possibly after an hour or two I would be imitating your accent in parts. I am a bit like a parrot without wanting to do it. I lived in London for a short time long ago and travelled at other times on holiday in UK. When I was in York I simply could not avoid beginning to speak like them. I lived in Rome and knew a large number of Irish Franciscans. Their house was across from where I lived and
I was often invited to eat and recreate with them. Within 30 minutes I was like a clone of whatever Irish sounds I heard.
By the way I very much enjoy the way you speak. Not just what to me is an accent but you are wonderfully articulate with splendid diction. You have a very expressive face and mouth which is aesthetically charming. Sorry, I once was an artist so observation is in my genes.
To be honest it has become a passion of mine all the different accents which is why I so love your videos. What pleases me very much is that 40 years ago I could not have differentiated most of the world's accents of the English speaking countries and now I can. From NZ, Aus, S. Africa, Canada, Ireland and many UK accents. It has become a bit of a hobby. Not perfect but really fun. Liverpool, Manchester, Hull, Newcastle, Blackpool, Cornwall, Essex and so on.
And of course Northern Irish vs. the many Irish Republic accents. Dublin perhaps the RP of Ireland. What do you think?? I think of Jamie Dornan, Aidan Turner and Jack Reynor, Ardal O'Hanlon for example.
Well if you've read this far you are a hero. :-) Cheers and all the best.

Can you do a analysis of the accents of James McAvoy. I’m was flabbergasted when I heard his natural accent being so Scottish! How he manages to hide it in movies like Chronicles of Narnia or Atonement. Same goes with David Tennant. And finally Jodie Comer in killing eve... have you herd how scouser is she?

I'm trying to learn the phonetics of the British Jewish accent--in particular London/Jewish. More like middle-class Harold Pinter than cockney. I can find detailed breakdowns for many accents, vowel sounds, etc., but nothing on the UK Jewish accent. Any pointers anyone?

Jonny Depp's accent has changed throughout the years, probably also due to the accents he has picked up from various roles he has played.
