Today I am showing you understand compression. After watching you will be able to use a compressor like a pro. These simple compression techniques helped me to Finally Understand Compression. The goal of this video is to explain professional compression techniques using beginner compression techniques so you can train your ears to do compression like a professional producer. So it's compression for beginners, compression made simple, but how pros mix. This can help get your mixes as big, clean and punchy as your favourite pro producers. I'm using Ableton Live, but all of these techniques and principles are applicable to Logic, Cubase, Reason, FL Studio, Studio One, Bitwig and all other popular DAW's.

Nice video, thank you! One analogy that I heard that simplified the basics of compression for me is to imagine a teenager listening to music in her bedroom, and mom keeps poking her head around the door to tell her to turn it down.
Threshold - the level at which point mom opens the door to yell that things are too loud
Attack - how quickly the teenager turns down the volume
Ratio - how much she turns the volume down
Release - how quickly she then turns the volume back up once mom has closed the door
Brilliant 😂
Dannnng, Barricade is a banger
I can't put into words how much your talent and dedication to music have inspired me; your music is a constant muse.
great tutorial. without hectic video cuts. super well and understandably explained. many thanks for this. have definitely learned something again. 😀
Really digging Barricade! 👏 Thank you for all your tutorials!
Really appreciated this video, found it very helpful and informative!
great refresher on the subject. cheers!
Super helpful, thank you 🙏
Always explain things so well, my friend!
Cheers bro. Hope you're good 👍
Thanks for the tut I have been wondering when you are going to do Compression tutorial, simplified...
11:19 exactly! Ableton limiter needs updating
I think the sound is even not bad, but the interface is 💩
you are the best!
Hey Dilby can you make a video on how you set up the macros some of the Ableton racks you use such as the Sample Audition one that is used in some of your vids? I think it’s a gamechanger when it comes to workflow and I’m trying to make some similar ones
Could you please make a video on how to make drum fills? @dilby
Hey Dilby! Love your channel, thanks as always.
Can you clarify why you don't like the Ableton limiter's interface?
It has very limited (excuse the pun) visual feedback. You can't even accurately see how many dB of gain reduction you are getting. Obviously in a different league, but if you compare it to something like Farbfilter Pro L2 the difference is insane.
I expected more from this video. like how to hear what attack and release setting to use, especially on a limiter etc., so maybe you can do an advanced video on this. however for a beginner this video is pretty good!
Fair enough, but I did mention several times in the video and in the thumbnail the word "simple" so expecting advanced material seems a bit unrealistic. It may not have been what you wanted personally, but I think it delivers what it says it will. I appreciate your feedback though.
The reason for the video is that I see a lot of newer producers using compressors on every track for no reason and without understanding what they are for and how they work. They do it because that's what "pros" do. I work with lots of producers one to one and this is a super common thing.
I see a compressor primarily as a problem solving tool that should be used to solve specific problems, not something that has to be thrown onto every track.
As far as advanced compression tutorials, I think there are people that can do that better than me to be honest, so probably not.
@@dilbydj yeah I get that point. you succeeded at what you wanted to teach. =)
Camprissor
Thanks Dilby, did you change headphones on purpose or is it some collaboration?
AIAIAI sent them to me, but I think they're really good to be honest. I still use the Sennheiser HD650 for mixing etc but these are amazing for filming as they are wireless with ultra low latency.
@@dilbydj Thx a lot mate , you made me switch from my HD700s (which i got for real good price) to the HD650s and although the 700s have more detail , the HD650s translate way better.
Yo D! Would you recommend Oszillos Mega Scope, even if we use Voxengo Span? It looks pretty handy for getting that fat sausage master and you can see it in real time.
Yes and no. It's a great tool, but in the recent versions of Ableton it causes a lot of crashes. Really annoying.
@@dilbydj thanks D, we appreciate ya 😎🎶
“The compressor is designed to reduce the dynamic range of a signal.” Here’s the Double talk: “what this means is the louder parts get quieter and the quiet parts get louder…” That is not what that means. People should say it’s a byproduct. That’s why compression is confusing; because of the double talk. Video was helpful though.
What does it mean?
@danielstoicamusic Yes, what is your correct explanation?
@@Woji52 I don’t have an explanation. His is fine and helpful. Especially the later 2/3rds of video . What I wrote is literal. Double talk causes confusion. People should say exactly what it is… not terms defined by what it’s like.
