Auntie Can’t Believe I Speak Vietnamese “So Fluently”

- In this travel vlog, I explore the Bình Thạnh District of Saigon, Vietnam. I talk with some locals at a Vietnamese wet market, and then go deeper into the market to buy a pair of sandals. Once I’m in there, the woman selling the sandals is surprised at how I can speak Vietnamese “so fluently.”
To be fair, my Vietnamese is not fluent, but I have been working on getting better, so it was really nice to get compliments from her.
After leaving the market, I eat some duck porridge at a street food vendor, and run into some Vietnamese guys dressed in LA latino style clothes.
It was a nice way to spend an afternoon in Saigon, and I encourage anyone visiting Vietnam or living in Ho Chi Minh City to take little walking adventures like this. You never know what you might find or who you might run into!
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed this travel vlog.

I love hearing your Vietnamese. 😊 such an endearing moment buying shoes for the misses.
Thank you! I’m trying to get better
Hey Tyler. I am in England. A few years ago I used to really enjoy ‘Eli the bike guy’ who used to do a live stream for a few hours uk time was early Sunday morning so his time would start about 9-10 am. Used to listen through his chit chat was mellow. Your voice is similar and I think you could do good live similar. Cant wait to see if you do something similar and mixing in your Vietnamese interaction would be great as Eli spoke no local language. Happy days to you. All the best- Lee
Your videos make me feel like I am actually there with you. Jim in California
Good vlog, Tyler. She complimented your Vietnamese and asked how did you achieve it. She asked if you're here (there) teaching English implying that's how you could have picked up the language so well. Perhaps she was speaking a bit fast so it was hard to comprehend. But, overall, she was very complimentary of you. Seems like a nice couple.
Those three Vietnamese "cholo" are pretty cool and friendly.
Love your post every time
Thank you for sharing brotha
You’re welcome
Love your Vietnamese too!
Thanks so much
props to you brother, your VN accent is on point! fun watching you!!!
Thank you! 🙏
Thanks!
Thank you!
Ooh the sugar cane drink I’ve never seen. That was so cool to see and now I want to try one. Bowl of soup looks amazing also. 🤤
I’m glad you got to see it
Very proud of you Tyler, keep after the Vietnamese, it is opening more doors and opporunities for you. Excelsior!
Thank you 😊
‘Eli in Vietnam’ was the name he finally used- not done anything for 2 years now but still videos ơn utube
Is so refreshing to see the real Vietnam through your contents. Not just the tourist parts of ppl just visiting Vietnam. Your vietnamese getting much better since i started watching u at 4k subs or something. I still believe u deserve much more views and subs, just a few video from it to explode to 100k subs i hope! Keep up the good work!
Cheers I really appreciate your support 😊
Chao is like menudo... good for a hangover. Also, no tipping like in US.
I like how you pronunce Trung Vit Lon :)
Another great vlog Tyler - as someone enjoying picking up new vietnamese words, loving the subtitles now.
We have noticed a new 'grab' taxi service called xanh (how do you pronounce that?) 😊
Yeah I’ve noticed those too. All electric bikes and cars. Pronounced like the word “sans” but without an “s” at the end is the best explanation I can give lol
@@BigTimeBentley thanks Tyler that makes sense.... Keep up the great work 😁
Hello Big Bentley , love your channel!!! Can you recommend a Vietnamese language school in Saigon? Love your accent 😅
They speaks Latin mix with Chinese i ain't languages expert but according to thier history go figure 🧐
I have a teacher I can recommend to you if you want to shoot me a message on Instagram
you r good with Tiếng Việt!!!
thank you!
Basa fish is sold in Europe. It is quite tasteless, but I believe it is intensively farmed so is plentiful. You have to add lots if cream, herbs and spices to make it palatable.
I saw Alice In Chains in Honolulu in my the 90’s. It was awesome. I really enjoy your content.
Awesome 😎
Đi chợ nào vậy Tyler? Remind me of my childhood. I used to go to the wet market after school, đi ăn chè và bột chiên.
Dude, you bargained like my mom did back then 😂😂😂😂
haha love it...my bargaining game is getting better... btw this is Thi Nghe Market in Binh Thanh
HHAHAHA viet auntie is SHOOK you could speak vietnamese so well. I second her compliment good job
Thank you! 😃
$2 Cháo is about the same price in Cambodia in many places. They're really feeling the inflation here 🤔.
Yum Yum! I reckon 4.54pm.
This is the closest guess, well done! Time was 4:45pm.
Ngon quá❤
MÙA HÈ NÓNG QUÁ...CỐ LÊN NHÉ 😢🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Time hmm.. around 5pm 😅
Hey I live like 20 mins from Redondo Beach & love going for a stroll by the pier there. Haven’t been back to VN in ages think I’d feel quite intimidated now lol. Just curious what made you move to VN?
I’ll make a video about this topic soon. I love the Redondo pier too. One of my first videos on this channel is from there
4:10PM!
Cause you eating Chao and it’s cloudy. I’m guessing 8:30 AM. Btw, next time if you need to add fish sauce, just add that dipping suace, it’s made from Fish Sauce. It should boost your rating to 8.5 at least. I found this video right before bed time today and I think I’m liking you already.
😎👍
Cheers bro
The sandals lady said your Vietnamese is very good. Do you teach it or do you study it? She said you are very fluent and your pronunciation is very concise. She said you're 37 which is the same age as her relative. Hope that helps.
I study it
Like your “eatploration”
haha thank you
5.45pm or 6 ish pm
My guess would be around 4.30pm
Did you mention what district you were? I didn’t catch it do you have any idea what’s the situation with retirement visa?
carrying a Pyrex container in a backpack would come handy if i were to live there, better than having the hot shot going in a plastic bag
hot soup
Time check I’ll go 5.08 pm
Eggs are “fermented” or “fertilized”
Yeah I think I misspoke in the beginning
Preamble is a word which means introduction. But I am afraid preambulate does not exist (if it is what you said). However, the French word déambuler means to wander, but it is not in common usage.
Perambulate is what I was going for
@@BigTimeBentley , apologies, I misheard you.
6:00 pm
5:53 pm.
Gonna give you a L and Sub for speaking Viet well. -:)
cheers thank you!
330pm
Time is 18:40 = 6:40 PM
What street and district is this in Tyler?
Binh Thanh District on a few different streets surrounding the Thi Nghe Market
3:40 PM
Looks like crushed ginger in the sauce.
It's 4:25
This is Cho Thi Nghe, Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh city. Very well known area for foreigners to live here, since it’s close to city centers and affordable
I guess 5:45PM (1745).
After eating: It's worth every penny.
Auntie said who are you
Dig the AIC
Word 😎
Had no idea the “Cholo subculture” existed in Vn 😮 Those guys need a lowrider for a complete presentation.
Oh....there is a huge community over there. You should look into it if you're curious. I've seen a few videos on here about them.
I wonder if it was from seeing the 80’s cholo culture in Japan, so wild when fist saw that lol
Còn có nhiều cộng đồng nhỏ cổ xưa khác.
I would be worry to eat raw veggie in VN. Seem like you didn't have any issue with it.
where is your girl at
When you meet a mature lady don’t ask her name but rather ask her rank in the family. She would say #2, #3 etc… and depending on her appearance you would call her aunt (cô, dì 2) or sister (chị 3) for example For more info , ask your girlfriend and she will explain to you more clearly. Remember that in VN you don’t ask a lady you just meet her maiden name because probably she wouldn’t use it in her family except for her husband or her parents.
That's old .
You probably thought she gave you, as a white guy, a higher price but Im telling you 50k ($2) is still cheap.
yeah I think she gave me the local price
Bravo ! your Vietnamese vocabulary is improving every day but you still need to work more on your pronunciation . When you said " Vit Lon " I first thought that you said something very obscene.
That is Duck fetus egg,
Troi dat oi = du ma
Troi dat oi ( more polite than; du ma)
Tyler bought a pair of sandals 2 quid for his girlfriend
Interesting....are those cholos in Vietname??
They aren't cholos just bunch of copy cats😂😂😂😂
Troi dat oi !
Means fucking hell or bloody hell or dear God please come here to help them or our or we need justice
I BET THIS TAYLER COULDN'T SPEAK HUE AND QUANG TRI ACCENT😂 JUST SOUNTHEN ONLY😂 MI NOI CAI CHI RUA?
You eat good Food and Cheap ...
Why would anyone eat ducks in the egg like this. Shame on you. Pure evil
*_Xin chào_* !
