- FaceCulture spoke to songwriter Tuomas Holopainen and bassist Marco Hietala just before their gig in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. In over 30 minutes we discussed the past, present and future of Nightwish, the importance of Marco for the band, writing lyrics and songs, growing up in Finland, musical heroes, science fiction, self esteem, Once and lots more! Marco has a lovely head of hair.
It's very tender and sweet how Marco hesitates and shows modest at Tuomas' compliments, when he is clearly epic in any single gesture of his body and in any single sound that comes out from his lips! He deserves every compliment!
Tuomas' gaze and attitude are both sweet and unsettling...it would freak me out to live with a person like that, even only for friendship or for working together like they do!But as a psychologist, understanding a patient like that would be my dream challenge!

Omg how babies they were. n__n Well, this was recorded almost 15 years ago. They have changed so much, more loose. And matured, expecially Tuomas, he was only 28 years old in this.

Comparing Tuomas's recent interviews and this one, I find it interesting how much more approachable Tuomas looks now as he aged (and gained some weight probably?) and lost his wolfish handsomeness, which was so intense that it's a bit frighting. Now he looks like a calm fat cat, one that is adorable in its own way lol.

Fat? He has always looked very healthy to me.
Only his face has got a bit rounder, but he hasn't gained much weight, no. He also stopped wearing eyemakeup 24/7 which kind of disappoints me, but whatever. He has aged gracefully though.
I think he only looks intimidating when he has the eyeliner on. Otherwise kind of a normal looking guy even back then.

But: there is a lot, too much of talking about Tarja's farewell, but who knows anything about Sami's farewell? Can anybody tell me anything please? I thought that the "personal problems" Tuomas refers to were with Tarja, how was Sami concerned? I still didn't know about NW back in 2001... and i could never imagine NW without Marco though! He's definitely my fav guy!
Im almost inspired to grow my hair like that, everytime i shave it off people say i look like an aryan nazi so i might as well go for the viking look.... ODIN!!!!

I think quite a lot of really talented musicians are troubled souls. Nick Drake, Mark Everett, John Lennon and so on. But that's what makes them genuine musicians who stand apart from all of the other fake crap that's out there. Some of the real musicians survive, some don't, either because they find the success they're looking for or because their skin is thick enough. Nick Drake was born with a skin too few, Mark Everett on the other hand has managed to pull through.

You have no idea how untrue that is, really. Take Tarja as an example. She never liked Nightwish in the first place. But that was not the problem. Tuomas just wanted to sell the band. That's why he kicked Sami out, and invited Marco, who was a 'legend' in Finland even back then. He was popular and famous, and thus 'good' for the band. Tuomas hated him, which you can see in EOI DVD, but he spat on his pride once more. Slaying the Dreamer can tell you something about that as well.
Nightwish used to be a warm up band for Tarot (Marco's band), and then the roles reversed later. So it wasn't really a whim on Tuomas's part either, they had known each other and met a few times.
