    I own both mares and geldings, Mares are much more sensative then geldings tend to be but mares use their mind more then geldings tend too, geldings will try and please you as Much as possible but mares will think about the situation, they will decide in their own minds if they should or want to do it, thus relating in some peoples thoughts of them being "stubborn" or "moody", I personally like mares more then geldings cause they constantly use their brains, they were born to be leaders in herds or "bosses" meaning they will constantly be alert or decicive in their thinking. I'm not saying one is better then the other I'm just saying what I prefer.

    All of the stallions I've ever ridden are super gentle and loving. I ride this adorable little (not so little anymore) Connemara/Selle française stallion named Jour and he is just the sweetest little bean!!! He's never been agressive or anything, he'll get a bit more frisky when he's stressed out, but otherwise he's just so sweet and loving!!! I don't think we have any geldings at our barn except for maybe boarded horses. All the stallions at my barn are super sweet except Jour's brother... Jour's brother has murderous intentions.......

    • @australianword3812
      @australianword3812 Před 4 lety +3

      Temperament varies widely based on genetics, and training, but because of their instincts as herd animals, they may be prone to aggressive behavior, particularly toward other stallions, and thus require careful management by knowledgeable handlers. However, with proper training and management, stallions are effective equine athletes at the highest levels of many disciplines, including horse racing, horse shows, and international Olympic competition
      So what I'm saying is, keep a gun on you when Jour's brother is nearby

    I have both. I ALWAYS take my gelding when going on relaxing trail rides or camping. He is an easy keeper for trail exploring weekends. I prefer riding my mare on very complex trails that are rocky, hilly, step up/down terrain. My mare loves the challenge and is so very sure footed. I trust her on any terrain. My mare despises relaxed trails and typically lets me know she is bored with subpar behavior. So I use both genders for two very different types of riding. My gelding would be too clumsy on the complex trails, he would have us tumbling down a rocky hill for sure.

    I have 2 Geldings and 1 Mare. I do prefer Geldings overall. My one Gelding may as well be a Stallion for the spirited behavior he has though he is not disrespectful at all. he can be like a little bit. .for real! The Mare is older and very gentle as well but she doesn't show as much personality. I love them all equally as they are like kids to me. .all unique. thanks for the video...

    I like my reactive/responsive arabian stallion who does not like to be stabled. He's so much easier for me to get on with than most mares or geldings. He knows I don't care for aggressive behavior so he's very well behaved as long as he has a social life and is allowed to be out. Stallions get a bad rap in my experience. It's usually caused by humans who lock them up without enough turnout or any social life. You only need to treat them like any other horse but with more secure fencing.

    One of the best cowboys I ever had the privilege to work for had both a mare and gelding quarterhorse and they were stabled together. They were inseparable and both great horses. He rode the gelding when pen riding or herding, and the mare was our cutter. She was so quick on her feet you better be holding on.

  • @TheDandiMare

    I currently have 2 geldings and one is a QH cross is very stubborn and hot one day and the next is very soft and wanting to please, my other Spotted Saddle gelding is fairly easy to work with, he can get a little sticky feet but he always willing to try. I've also had one stallion that was a smaller 14hh buckskin guy who was a dream, he would lunge and never pull, he was soft and friendly, but I also had to have 1 come to jesus meeting with him when he charged me when leading him after one of our first lunging session that actually went faily easy and he bit my shoulder, so we had our *talk* and worked out I was head horse, and after that, he was very respectful and always soft, even with younger people. I'm currently looking at getting a yearling mare to start.

    Of course we can make generalisations, but it all comes down to all of those things I guess like Callie says. My first pony was a New Forest Cross and you could hardly tell she was in heat, or at least not enough change to stop riding her. My second horse was a Thoroughbred ex racehorse gelding, and he was a real sweetie, a complete gentleman and also soo lazy and ’backwards’ minded when it came to flatwork!

      My issues with geldings aren't that I dislike them. It's that they tend to not care, be more likely to lack self preservation (Huge issue for me if you are gonna throw yourself over a cliff you aren't gonna protect me), and despite what people think I find they take things more personally where as a mare takes a correction and goes okay what next.

    IMHO - Gelding is much more person orientated than mare, where a mare is more flexible to many new people, geldings become shy and anxious in new company and need some "join up" before showing themselves, but after that, is super loyal to those few people they've come to trust. I always feel disconnected to any new gelding until a few days after they settle. Mare's also TEND to be more cautious with surroundings and new places, like not walking down a steep incline she cannot recover from, not trying different kinds of vegetation, where my gelding would walk down slide and hope for the best, try some foliage of some tree and get himself into trouble on some dodgy fence or terrain.

      No, you can still ride a mare who is in heat. But some mares are a bit harder to work with because they are grumpy during their cycle. Some mares have a milder cycle and you can hardly tell if they are in heat.

      Well I've never personally owned a horse, but all the stallions I've ever ridden were super sweet and good tempered (except this one dude). We just house them as we would any other gender except when the mares are in heat, although we do have these little pastures for single or coupled horses we put them in during lesson season (so like spring, summer and these 2 weeks we have as break in the fall). Otherwise, we'll have lessons with stallions, mares an geldings, and we're just fine

    • @Abmb88
      @Abmb88 Před rokem

      Mares are more receptive to your energy and non-verbal communication then geldings and stallions as they have to be because of their natural instinct to lead, breed and provide. Mares are smarter and have a much better memory so bad experiences are harder to get past on a mare because of their sharp memory. That is why you ask and discuss with a mare and not just order and obey like most geldings. Mares NEED to fully understand what they are doing because of their natural instincts where as geldings will just run off a cliff if you let them 😂 Mares are typically best as a one person horse in my opinion. I am a mare guy ALL the way. but mainly because geldings are boring and most don't have a personality 😂

    Just like to correct you about the stallions it's about the testosterone in the stallion. And also a gelding may have more testosterone in their system than others because of the time delay of castration. I'm not one that likes to comment on issues, but this can be a life saving knowledge. As if the horse has more testosterone they, will be more unpredictable and hotter.

    • @Abmb88
      @Abmb88 Před rokem +1

      Mares are the best. Not only do they have babies, the alpha mare is also responsible for protecting other babies and mares as well as leading the herd to food, water and away from danger. They are much smarter, use their brains more and get themselves out of danger. The main purpose of the stallion is to breed and mainly protect the herd from other stallions. They are not as protective against predators because when the herd moves the stallion stays at the rear and usually horses defend against predators as a herd like most other mammals. Most mammalian males sole purpose is to breed and protect against other males taking his herd. The alpha females typically lead, protect the babies and are in charge of finding food sources. Most mammalian species or any species as a matter of fact, are matriarchal meaning the alpha female leads.
