  • Juicioso, PRE (Andalusian) has seen something and I check out what it is.
He is a stallion, 7 y of age on this movie.
Nature is always inside a Horse, some people want to take it away but thats like taking the water from the see. A Stallion has very specific behavior, he follows who he is and the age of 7 means that in his nature he would start to study mares.
In the wild males can become herd stallion, at the age of 5-10 years, many times is seen that these stallions prepare themselves for a couple of weeks. They roam alone before they give a try to gain mares.
Some people think that a gelding is not male anymore, castration only takes away most testosterone but does not make a Horse a mare. The character is still there and so is the being male.
This is quite a misconception for many people, who somehow think that their geldings have become a mare. Wrong, they are still male but the testosterone drive (aggression, competing, mating) will be less or wit some Horses even gone.
We many times still see that gelding respond on mares who are in season. Even with mounting.
Character and temperament are not the same, unfortunately for some of you we people can not cut that away, I bet if that were possible people would do it.

Just recently found this "About Horses" channel, and IMHO this woman is amazing. Her observation skills and interpretations are topnotch. Her narration is so relaxed and conversational, you get the feeling you are there with her in the pasture quietly observing and learning. I also find the cadence of her speech to be quite relaxing. Really, really nice use of graphics, too. Glad to have stumbled across this!

A stallion is a male Horse and even when gelded they stay male Horses.
The goal of this movie was to explain how stallions can respond on geldings. Like with every rule there are always exceptions.
Its true that some gelding still feel the need to mate, especially when there are mares in season around them. Not all but it happens.
One thing that is important for Horsepeople to remember and to be aware of is that every Horse is an animal from nature and will bring his or her nature. Still I hope the movie is worth while.

My gelding was stuck with a rig at one point in his life and has learned some things from that, mainly to protect his mare from stallions and fighting. He will not fight mares or my mare or geldings who are polite. However the rig was a big chestnut the last time he met one he reacted to him very aggressively and this gelding was just desperate to be friends.

I'm lucky enough to be living with a Lusitano stallion on a ranch in Sonoma County, and agree with you.

Actually there are some males in nature that prefer another male and not interested in the female. Of course they are rare as they do not pass on any generic material. They die without or little offspring. But it does happen

I just descovered that my "Stallion like" geldings is, infact, a cryptorchid. I've had him for two years, and is the only male in a herd of mares, one of which is particularly... there's no nice word. He behaves fine, is happt and content, and has stipped trying to mount the mares. We are almose 100% sure that he is infertile, as he did mount when he came to us, and no foals have come dispite full time out with the mares.
We've had suspicions of him being "High Cut", meaning parts other than the testese were left, but no idea that he was cryptorchid. He doesn't really act hormonal at all. He's just a happy boy.
So I have a lippizanner stallion. Intresting.

I braid my horse's mane. With a mane that long, you need to keep it braided. Otherwise it gets knotted and matted

i love draft horse, mainly stallions, sadly most of them and the majority are always gelded, which then they become dull and boring, a stallion draft is more full of energy, my uncle still owns him 12 years old and not gelded always full of energy always proud to be a stallion. works the field and weekends they take him to the river fun and outgoing, compared to a gelding they are just dull, and not natural. sorry i prefer a stallion over a gelding.

+Bob M Why multiply horses? There are enough horses, and life is not only about that once a year possibility to breed is it. She will be pregnant for 11 months and what about the foal. A foal alone with only a stallion is not a healthy situation. Foals need other foals, mares and groups.
We do have 3 other horses so he has some social contact. I don't think he was unhappy. Even in our Dutch wet climate.
Actually he is castrated last year, it brings some calmness for him. He is a high temperament guy.

    • @janetgriffiths7200
      @janetgriffiths7200 Před 7 lety +2

Not always. There have been fertile molly mules. The john(male mule) is always sterile, but he will have male hormones, and will act like a stallion. They do need to be gelded, even though they shoot blanks.

Lovely animal indeed. But gelding eat more than regular horses. Every time you neuter animal/castrate/spay it eats more hence polluted more the environment. Not to mention they're not happy and will never be like others of their kind, in all ways... Just point to be thinking about. We mingle too much in nature but this beautiful horse is still muscly and wild and it' the way it should be.

    • @ladydawn1973Eternity

Animals don't eat only when they're hungry, but when they're neutered, they do eat a lot more ...
