Actually, Croatian fans were chanting our most recognizable game chant: ‘U boj, u boj, za narod svoj.’ The direct translation would be: ‘Into battle, into battle, for our people.’ We weren’t chanting anything towards the Japanese crowd… All respect goes to the Japanese side. They were amazing.

In fact "U boj, u boj" by Nikola Šubić Zrinski is/was an anthem of the Kwansei Gakuin university. They picked it up orally from Austro-hungarian sailors (Czechs and Croats) who were stationed there during the period of WWI..

As a Japanese person, I was rooting for this team, and I cried because they weren't able to make it to the quarterfinals😢

Japan was my favourite, shame we had to play against them. I really love the way Japanese players and fans are so disciplined and polite, real gentlemen.
It broke my heart seeing them cry cause it reminded me of us in 2018. You can tell these people really love their country and football. You can be really proud of yourselves Japan!

Croatia is my favorite team since the last world cup. I remember my heart was broken at the moment they couldn’t get the trophy. Their teamwork is beautiful and Modric is the greatest captain ever. Hope they will be the champion this time for sure!!
Hi Kei, this game was even harder for me as I am Croatian and my wife is Japanese, it was a win for Croatia and I was happy for it but on the other hand I am sad that it was Japan we beat. I feel so sorry for Japan and my wife and her family, so I am not going to celebrate this win. I wish Japan the very best in the future and your time will come. It's safe to say all Croats loved the Japan team and hated that we had to play you guys. Even as a Croat, I would have been fine with getting knocked out by such a team because you played fair, you played tough and you played with so much heart!
Most Croats are aware of Japan's history, how important honor is to you and how much dignity you have as a people and your team truly embodied those same qualities. You can be proud of them and the result! I'll be rooting for you guys in the next WC for sure! :)

Really sloppy inefficient game from both sides but it was still a hardfought game by two countries with a determined and strong mindset, so this game was a pleasure to watch. Croatian fans never disrespect their opponent, unless Croatia gets disrespected first. A good example of that would be the match vs Canada, prior to which the Canadian coach and especially their goalkeeper said some insulting stuff that pissed off a lot of people.
Even after a heartbreaking loss in the Round of 16, Japan fans stayed after the match to clean the stadium 🇯🇵

i mean the pen shootout gave you all the answers you need to know, they have heart, spirit, and a desire to win the game, that plus a good manager that knows what he wants. their only drawback was lack of experience in a big tourney like this and easily fell to the pressure, the same pressure we croats have gotten used to which is why we won.
It's the 2018 runner up ofc they do have more exp than you, especially on penality shootouts, Croatia is one of the two teams to have a 100% record from penalty shootouts - 3 out of 3 in wc's
Japan on the other hand has only played one game that ended in a penalty shootout before this in the 2010 wc and they lost, so i kinda knew that when all came down to penalties it was gg for japan, hopefully its a leason learned and you guys become prolific penalty shoothers after this, cheer up!
This is probably the first gut wrenching match in the current World Cup.

the Japanese are my favorite team at the championship, of course after Croatia, because I'm Croatian! A good match, a quality opponent, we played badly, but we still have character and love for our team, the people and the whole world. We, little Croatia, are again in the quarter-finals of the world championship. We are playing against Brazil and we will probably lose because they are a much stronger team. We are irrational and we will pray to God with all our hearts to beat Brazil even though it is "impossible". If Luka Modrić plays one of his best matches and if we beat Brazil, the atmosphere in Croatia will be the same as in 2018 when we won the silver. Joško Guardiol is our trump card bigger than Modrić in this championship.

I was hoping for Japan and Australia to go to the 1/4 finals but at least they went down swinging and gave us exciting nail biting matches. What a world cup.

It was a tough game, and when neither side can score that goal from open game it is the penalties where the winner is determined. Luckily for us Croats our team has some experience when it comes to that. 🇯🇵 has shown they are a strong football nation and we in 🇭🇷 knew it would not be easy but still few thought it would be this hard.
