“ONE PIECE Small Lid Jar” with “Snow on the Moon” Glaze Throwing on the Potter’s Wheel

  • Today's project is a "ONE PIECE Small Lid Jar" with the "Snow on the Moon" glaze.
The ONE PIECE series is one of my favorite techniques. It involves throwing a pot and then separating it into parts at the greenware stage.
This jar has a small lid, which means I need to throw a narrower top and then close the pot.
Compared to the flash lid jar, this style requires more practice. However, the elegant shape makes it worth trying.
I use my standard glaze, "Snow on the Moon," for this pot, so I need to use black clay for this project.

I absolutely love your videos. You go through every step in detail for every video - even the centering and coning. Other potters just tell you to watch their other videos. I also love that you go from start to finish in the entire video. Please make more!

🥰 You are always kind to me Wascally. I didn’t include my glazing process so far as it is not particularly special. This “The Snow on The Moon” is different technique so I thought it would worth including in the process. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

I find that I can learn a lot from potters talking about their own glazing practices, testing, mixing, their inspiration for their glazes and so on. I'm sure you too have an interesting take on that because I find your glazes beautiful, that's what I meant :)

Really beautiful variation of your pots with the inset lid, absolutely mesmerising to watch you work. Recently I tried your spice shaker and I didn't have a chopstick so I used a wooden peg - I still have yet to trim these pots so will rewatch your video closely. Very cool to see your glazing process with the applicator and newspaper resist I have not seen that before and I will try this, it gives a more naturalistic feel than tape resist. :)

Wow it is amazing.Just want to ask you, how long you left the jar to get dry before cutting the lid?

    • @AlchemyCeramic
      @AlchemyCeramic  Před 11 dny +1

Thank you for your comment Padmini😊. My studio is dry and warm so 16h is good time to trim. It changes depending on the seasons. But all potter’s studio conditions are different.
I’m in London, if you are in sunny California it is shorter.
The clay we use are different.
The best way to judge the timing is to check with the pot. When I hold the pot the surface is dry but still the color hasn’t changed are good signs.
To manipulate the cutting edges the pot needs to be still soft enough.
The bottom is wetter than top normally so judging point is the lid catcher.
If I focused the bottom condition the lid catcher is too dry to trim.
One day I make a video focusing the drying process.

Thank you for your comment Nasta😊. I’m so pleased to hear from Belarus!
Your question, the answer is 100% “Yes”.
      I’m self-taught potter.
There are many different ways to make pots. So watch how people make, then try by yourself many many times.
In old days in Japan, The Masters never taught apprentices.
All apprentices just watched how masters make pots then tried by themselves.
Now we are in more friendly environment. There are many information for us. Please use my videos as much as possible to get some good parts. Also try other potters, as my way is just one of them.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you again!

One of my biggest frustrations when learning a second language has been peoples’ reluctance to offer corrections and constructive criticism. I imagine they were afraid of offending me or being construed as insensitive but I really just wanted to learn!
Also, I feared the possibility of a CZcams censor bot recognizing a keyword like that in the subtitle and subjecting you to age restriction or demonetization.
