    I would watch the ever living f*ck out of a series where you go through what needs to be done, to get this car as close to a linear power curve as you possibly can. Turbo sizing, cam gears, boost control strategies, ignition timing, Scott voodoo magic, the lot! Basically see if you can get it to behave close to a positive displacement type super charger.... That would be absolutely exhilarating to drive, both on the road and on the track. To heck with winning drag races in this gorgeous little tin can! :D

    I didn't have valet mode. I had a block of wood I put under the carpet so when he floored it, it gave him half throttle.
    A few weeks later he got his own car.. he bragged about how much faster his car was than mine.
    I never told him.

    When Blair (Moog from Mighty Car Mods) got his hands on a super clean and original Nissan Fairlady Z, his intentions were to leave most of it stock. His hand was forced however by Australia's import laws with the engine, transmission, and brakes all earmarked for removal. With a brand new suspension, transmission and brake setup coupled with an RB26 turbo swap the Fairlady now had more go than its designers ever intended it to have. But you can never have too much power right? Well, it depends... Tuning Fork explains why.

    Perfect 👌 Love that you pointed out that 400+whp in a 40yr old car is TERRIFYING! ‘IF’ ppl were forced to drive their ‘modern’ cars WITHOUT ABS, TSC, power assistance steering etc...the wrecking yards would be FULL. I love cars and speed. But the truth is that ‘street’ cars really don’t need more than 300whp or the ability to hit 155+mph...’most’ ppl can’t drive more than that anyway. FUCK. ‘most’ ppl can’t drive 😜🤤👌

  • @emotionalcontentmediaunltd2267

    This was such a great video! This car was never meant for that kinda horsepower, setup like that. Its not a drag car hahahaha with all the suspension upgrades its obviously fine but that isnt what its for. This brings it right back to what the car is meant to do, tour. Scott, if you're ever in Las Vegas, let me know. I'll let you take out my 4G63 powered Datsun 1600 (Datsun 510). You'll actually fit in my car 😊
    I'm also working out some drivability issues with my car. A lot of it is just the small tire and light weight of the car. Boost comes on hard kind of like Moogs car, but mine is still lower in the rev range. Even still, I can spin the tires at around 50% throttle in 2nd gear. It's fun, but not very productive.
    The balance between a street car and a race car is always a struggle. I've added cruise control to my car and I'm working on some gear based boost control with my ECMLink system. I'm also looking into adding air conditioning to make long drives more bearable. But the appeal of a fast light weight car makes me want to just strip it down and go fast 😋 #4G63510

  • @maxtorque2277
    @maxtorque2277 Před 3 lety +2

    I feel the important words missed from this video are "effective wide open throttle"! !
    A throttle plate acts in the time domain, ie it controls the amount of air that can flow past it vs time. As engine speed increases, more cylinders fire in any given time period. This means that a throttle that is size to not be restrictive at peak power (max airflow) is 'effectively' full open at less than fully open as engine speed falls. Typically, you will find that at say 2500rpm, "wide open throttle" ie the point at which there is no (significant) pressure drop across that throttle is around 25% of maximum opening! This is why you need pedal to plate tables that are 3d and include engine speed as one of the axes, enabling you to fully linearise and characteris the engine torque (proportional to manifold pressure) at any engine speed. For a turbo engine, you can also effectively use the throttle to drop boost pressure (at some fuel consumption penalty, but not very relevant for a typical aftermarket/tuner car) ie as manifold pressure climbs you CLOSE the throttle to limit Mdot.
    Modern OE engine controllers are torque based ie they work in the torque domain, and the accelerator pedal input is characterised to a flywheel torque (both positive and negative) that the engine actuators (cams, injectors, ignition, boost controller etc etc) then deliver.
    One nice trick that can work really well is to map close to MBT at up to around 50% torque at medium engine speeds, and then deliberately open the throttle plate faster, but pull out spark away from MBT. Flywheel torque is unchanged (if you have got your values correct, but you are now running with more air and less spark to make that torque. That means more exhaust energy that then helps to lower and soften the boost threshold. As pedal demand comes back towards and exceeds 90%, you transition back towards MBT/LBT to provide maximum output.

  • @rundwark
    @rundwark Před 3 lety

    Great vid Scotty! One major issue: Albrecht von Goertz didn’t design the S30. He took credit for it for several years. Nissan ultimately settled with him and gave him credit for introducing their design team to a few techniques (I believe full-scale clay modes was one) but never to the S30 design. The S30 was designed by Yoshihiko Matsuo.
    Goertz has several exciting low volume sports cars in his name but nothing as successful as the original Z.

    At haltech do you ever tune the very low rpms throttle to be at 100% open, but power is controlled by the amount of fuel injected. Many Audi engines ran like that. Kind of like diesel engines, but not!
    Believe this helps with fuel efficiency and getting the turbo to spin up faster!

    Cool car, nice video and explanation. I like the build someone did. @20:50 The smile and laugh says it all. Minimal changes to interior and looks - mainly the drivetrain. 👍🏼 It’s an S30 but not a 240Z, looks like a 260Z from the tail lights and interior, but I’m not an expert.

  • @ruaraidhmcdonald-walker9524

    Ah but it's got the puRitY Scott!! Twin turbos next rather than that lag monster, trade peak power for response. Great video on driveability optmisation, get that pedal map smooth. Great fun. Spent years doing this on ME7/9.... Fun!
