Nice hat you have there.
Luckily I live in England and am 140 miles from Herbert Johnson. I went there many times over the years and saw Mr.. Swales who created the Indy Poet. He was such a nice person and it was easy to see how he had the creativity to adapt the original Poet into the Indy.
I feel honoured to have known him.
There is a scene in the making of the raiders movie in the raven bar when Karen Allen messed up her lines. Harrison is behind her and you see him crease the hat. When I copied what he did, it gave me the look like his fedora. People either forget or don't know that he is the reason the fedora looked as it did with the crease and turn it has. I have a 12yr penman, its held up amazingly great. The only issue is its beaver and its very dense. Doesn't have that flop like the raiders fedora did. By the way, great video.
Thank you very much! You saved my Fedora with this video! Genius!
Nicely done
I've got a Herbert Johnson raiders rabbit felt hat, I love it.
Nicely done!
Thanks! Your videos are a huge inspiration!
@@HenryWaltonStudios Thank you!! 🤠
I plan on making a whole series about this, but I just recently finished getting all my screen acurate Indy gear. Its not all from one specific movie (cheaper that way) but most of it is from Raiders. I want to go through each one. Where I got it, and how much they cost.
@@HenryWaltonStudios That’ll be awesome! Looking forward to seeing it!
I'm gonna try and shape my fedora, although I think mine is a bit thicker (Steele and Jones). I may end up getting a gray Advintage, they look amazing!
Hey Henry, does the way you modified the hat include the “raiders turn” on the brim? You know how the Raiders Turn gave the brim a more dramatic swoop? Is this included?
A little here. But I've reshaped this once more and got it reblocked with a more exaggerated turn.
@@HenryWaltonStudios oh I see. Thanks for replying
@@HenryWaltonStudios oh another question- can you have the exaggerated turn from the ‘Raider’s turn’ without actually having to literally turn the ribbon towards your eye? I want to know because I’m going to a hat talon that is going to modify my hat and I need to explain to the guy how I want the rim to be shaped. How did you exaggerate it even more than this video? So I guess I’ve asked you two questions. I would appreciate it if you can answer both of them so I have a better idea of how I want to modify my hat.
It's tough to say.
I'd check out the Herbert Johnson channel. They made the original hats and do a lot of videos about shaping the fedora. But from my experience the best way to get the turn is to turn the hat on your head moving the bow on the ribbon towards your face. Then push in on the sides. Just do that until you get the amount of swoosh you're satisfied with.
How good does a standard lint roller work vs the tape method? Did you try that? Thanks!
I haven't tried a lint roller, but it'd probably work a little better
I’ve had my Akubra Federation IV hat for almost a year. I was thinking about Re Shaping it cause I don’t think it looks Raiders style at all anymore. Can I still re shape my Fedora if it’s been bashed for a year? I’m not sure how I feel about attempting this on my own. Lol
Depends on the material. You can re bash it, but it will be easier if it is rabbit felt, harder if it's beaver felt
I just got mine. Ngl, the hardest part for me is the brim 😂. Idk why, but mines ain’t got the swoop and it looks like the drip down is more pointy than a “ramp”. But then again I’ve also did the raiders turn and have the ramp more with the crooked pinch than the true center, so maybe that’s why?
It’s pretty fun (also annoying and “frustrating”, not really, when things just ain’t going) and tells a tale on your own hat. Patience is key and key tip is making sure you don’t have your hat too close to steam
I’m sure you got this
What felt color did you go with for this one?
light sable
How many minutes does the hat steam?
Just until it's soft and malleable
