Nice upgrade! Everyone should have the ability to remove the cover without using tools. I experienced a rough running engine in the ocean and had to remove the engine cover to check a few things. Turns out it was just sargasm clogging the intake grate! 🤣😂🤣

Nice JD. Got some plastic similar ones here in Aust. with brass screw inserts. The dealer didn't mention to use the washer but good idea. The Kawi Performance 316 SS [look] much better. Might look at acquiring a set.
I had a set of the plastic ones with brass inserts, but the inserts began to strip in the plastic and they had to be tossed

@JDsWaterWorld agree....over the last decade there have been a series of piston failures, catch can redesigns, ECU pump unload fuel cut nannies, unnecessary engine covers etc...I like the new display but not enough to drop 23 large on a new ski and trailer when I bought mine for $11.5k and still puts a big smile on my face. Hey JD, When you were using the plastic knobs from KSpeed were you using the stock washers as well? Bc I just rewatched your video from 6 months ago and it didn't seem like you did. I ask, bc even after the water intrusion recall was completed on my ski, I am still finding more than usual "cold" water in my hull after a day of riding.
I was not using any washers with the plastic knobs..one of my plastic knobs shattered and so I decided I needed something more durable for ocean riding. Yes unfortunately I get water intrusion as well..it comes in under the cover..the seal is not adequate..I’ve been testing different seals I’ll keep you updated!

The PWC doctor versiplugs work great to keep the hull dry, but you still end up with saltwater contacting the engine..which sucks.
I saw various brass and plastic combination nuts but didn't trust them. The stainless thumb nuts I found have worked very well. Similar to original ones you found. These do look slick and high quality.
It does not look pretty but a piece of duct tape along the hinge side of the cover door keeps the water out and that is with the original gasket. I can still remove the door for post ride ventilation. Since I can't just leave my seat popped open to better ventilate I remove the access door and put it inside the gullwing storage. This is talking post fresh water ride when I dont have to rinse the engine compartment. Thanks for the info!
Hey JD, I have a mechanical question, I have a 23 ultra lsx, the ski just hit 10 hrs, I’ve noticed the boost only goes up to 13-13 and a half psi in fpo mode, is this normal? Shouldn’t it be around 16ish? If it’s not normal do you have any idea what the culprit might be? All my hose clamps are tight as well.
With the stock tune that’s completely normal. Typically with the stock tune you will reach a max rpm of 7600 and speeds 63-65 mph. Sometimes if you’re going downwind etc you can hit 67 before the limiter kicks in.
@@JDsWaterWorld ok thank you for your reply’s JD, one more question, I’ve noticed the steering is a bit wiggly up and down as well, I’ve checked all the bolts and they seemed good, I know some slop is probably normal but it seems like a bit much
Yes, the stop adjustable steering assembly does come with a bit of play- you can tighten it up a bit yourself and grease it well and that helps- but ultimately if you want it to be stiff you will need a fixed riser (like the one that comes with the 310R) but then you sacrifice the ability to change height. I have a fixed riser now and it’s tight with no play but I think I am going to go back to the stock adjustable riser for more ergonomics in the chop
I agree on the excessive play in the adjustable steering BUT I have noticed that I do not notice the play when actually riding. Very surprised at that. Maybe in the rough water the extra play takes some of the jolt out of your hands and arms??? I was not a fan of the loose feeling when just sitting on it and was considering swapping to the fixed as you did. But after putting more hours on both these skis I am amazed how little I notice it riding.
That being said there is the big round set nut under the column itself that normally can be tightened on Kawis. That thing has been loose for my preference on the almost 15 Kawi sitdowns I have owned now.

Call Kawi Performance and ask for Steve..he’s the #1 Kawasaki Jet Ski engine specialist in the US.
@@JDsWaterWorld I spoke to him couple times, he knows everything Lol
But now I need a mechanic around, in south Florida, Steve doesn’t work with tunes anymore, otherwise I would be glad to drive there so he could do the job.
Now seems to me that no mechanic knows enough about Kawi’s around here, and I don’t want to let a curious work on my machine.

Probably Riva Motorsports is your best bet on South Florida..I don’t ever use a mechanic so can’t give a referral other than Steve…
All I have to do to get to my engine is take both seats off my STX 160LX. LOL 😅
Yes but you can't adjust your seat back and forth which is a great feature
