  • The Transfer Portal has been the talk of College Football lately, and with the spring window closing and the last big names on the move Josh Pate took some time on Late Kick Live Ep 512 to discuss the losers from this cycle. LSU failed to make any moves despite trying. Clemson made zero moves for different reasons. Did Colorado find the caliber of player needed to win the Big12? We also saw Michigan State get dealt a tough hand. Clemson's excuse about not having roster space gets less and less valid every year. They control their roster and I'm not talking about kicking guys out. Their last recruiting class was almost 50% 3-star guys. They aren't Georgia signing primarily 5-star and high 4-star guys. They know the portal exists. Stop reaching for guys who will probably never see the field and you will almost certainly find better options with experience in the portal. I get their argument the first couple of years...but this is just Dabo being stubborn now.

    As of now LSU is a loser in the '24 portal class. It's not finished yet though. LSU should be able to get a DT or 2 before fall camp starts. Even if they don't they will be OK at the position.
    CBK did a great job of retaining players that might have left BR for the portal. There were only 2 players from LSU that hit the portal that were on the 2 deep. Both were OLineman. One was 2nd team center in '23 that was in line to start in '24 till he was beat out for the starting job. The other was a 5* OT that didn't want to spend his 2nd season on the bench again because tigers have the best set of bookends in the country along the OLine.

    I don't understand how Colorado is a portal loser. According to 24/7 Colorado has added four, four star defensive linemen up front and, you could argue some should be higher like Chidozie Nwankwo. On Defense they also added Preston Hodge a 4 star corner and, DJ McKinney who played a lot of snaps for Oklahoma State. On offense CU added Tyler Johnson who was a four star transfer, Justin Mayers who was a top ten offensive line transfer. Not to mention they added Lejohntay Wester who was a 1000 yard receiver for FAU, Will Sheppard who was a 4 star transfer, Rashad Amos and, Dallan Hayden. Colorado really did a great job filling their roster out. I am interested to see how the gel and, build commodity.

    Unfortunately, when your program isn’t “relevant,” on the off chance it does get any coverage, it is usually subject to shallow, surface-level analyses relative to its counterparts. Most would just assume that State’s a loser simply due to the sheer number of players they lost, without realizing that the overwhelming majority of them were not starters, nor were they projected to be. The secondary, for example, was arguably one of the weaker units on the team, even with guys like Jaden Mangham presumably returning at the time, and seemingly overnight, it’s significantly improved with additions such as Nikai Martinez, Jeremiah Hughes, Ed Woods, and Lejond Cavazos.

    The Post Spring transfer window needs to go. After spring camp you are supposed to know what you have and be able to plan accordingly for fall camp and the season. But now spring camp means nothing. Half of your team may transfer after spring camp. You have no idea for sure until the dust settles. Half the players you thought might have some kind of role might be gone before fall camp. It's ridiculous. I think there should be only ONE window. And that's a window that opens up AFTER the last season ends. And it should close a few days; maybe a week, before National Signing Day. So after National Signing Day you know what you are going to have for the upcoming season.

    I think your analysis of Michigan State lacks any nuance and is therefore highly inaccurate. The vast majority of portal departures were guys that weren’t going to be in the 2-deep. Yes, there are a few losses which will hurt, especially D-tackles. But they also picked up 5-6 guys who not only will be in the 2-deep, but improve the overall talent pool in their respective position groups. Some of the more important guys they lost were upper classmen in their last year of eligibility, while many incoming players had 3+ years to help the rebuild. (Plus, I believe they got Antonio Gates Jr. back from the portal, so you might have to update the list). Overall, I don’t believe was a big winner in the portal, but neither were they big losers.

    Since Colorado focuses heavily on using the transfer portal, we'll need to adopt a wait-and-see approach for the 2024 season. This will give us a clearer picture of how effective their strategy truly is. Personally, I believe they will find success, and many critics may have to reconsider their emotionally charged opinions. I understand the philosophical doubts, but I'm genuinely excited to see how it all unfolds starting in August.

They realistically lost 1 starter and a few players that were 2nd/3rd on the depth chart.

    This is the first year of the “bought not built” era of college football, where every player is an unrestricted free agent every year (Or, uh, I mean he can avail himself of opportunities to further his education and athletic journey by means of the transfer portal), and where blue blood, money programs get to lose 2 games and suffer no consequences.
    Given the new mercenary incentive structures it will be fun to see the first player who wins national championships for 2 or more teams, maybe 2 Heismans for 2 different teams, or maybe 2 conference championships playing for rivals in the same conference.
    As these things stand, unregulated, college football will suck.

    • @princeofgreece9054
      @princeofgreece9054 Před 12 dny

      You are 100 percent wrong. The idea that teams are being “bought not built” is wrong. Teams that try to buy a team in the portal can be good, but they aren’t the great teams. Deion is trying to buy a great team at Colorado and it hasn’t worked. The portal is good for filling in depth and gaps, but all the great teams develop talent much more than they portal it in. That’s the truth, and your opinion is one that I see all over the place and it’s, quite frankly, stupid and out of touch.

      @DeshCanter Před 12 dny

      @@princeofgreece9054
      Well you do see yourself in the mirror every morning so perhaps you are a subject matter expert on stupid.
      Meanwhile, back here in reality, using Colorado as your blanket summary of portal focus is a great example of the logical fallacy of false equivalence. Colorado isn’t Ohio State, where they ran their QB out of town along with most of their running back room so they could buy Judkins as a highest bidder for his services. You’re already seeing guys playing for 3 teams in 4 years and this unrestricted free agency unfairly advantages the deeper-pocketed schools. Anyone with a 3-digit IQ can see that, and those who know football have expressed their concerns. Joel Klatt is one of several prominent examples. Coaches now can’t plan to attack their upcoming schedules because they could literally lose 3 key pieces to their starting squad and several of their future plans for their programs after the spring game.
      Add to this paying guys who haven’t taken a snap in a real game making 5 times what veterans are and you destabilize the sport to the point where the bigger, richer schools will be a semi-pro league and the smaller schools will be developing farm systems for the bigger schools. Until it’s regulated you may as well make your program comptroller a recruiting coach and give him/her a hat and a t-shirt along with the rest of them.
      Ask Nick Saban what the straw was that broke his back. 15 seconds after dropping a bowl game to Michigan he had guys asking about how much they would make the next year and how much playing time they would get.

      it's not just about if they guys coming in are better than the guys leaving. It's also about building chemistry and depth which is something Colorado will find almost impossible to do without High School recruiting. If Colorado was adding 15-25 guys in high school recruiting then nobody would have a problem with their transfers. The problem is they only added 5 high school players. Also oline is very hard to build just through the portal. you can add 1 guy here or there but you are never going to have a good oline just based off portal and that was big weakness for Colorado last year.

    The NIL game is here. You either know how to play it or you don't. Brian Kelly doesn't know how to play it, plain and simple.
    As he is worried about paying the market going price. As he claims it is buying players. Well, didn't LSU buy him and his coaching staff by paying full market price.
    But that's different. How are Kelly and his coaching staff worth their expensive market value price but transfer portal players are not?
    I mean, the whole situation reeks of hypocrisy.

  • @theblackdog2399
    @theblackdog2399 Před 13 dny

    Since when is paying fair market value considered over spending? It is when you miss on players because you were far too cheap. Over-spending in this day and age of transfer portal NIL is nothing but a very lame excuse. The truth is Kelly miserably failed and that's all there is to it. He let LSU's fan base down and he should just own up to it and admit he screwed up.
    When he misses out on the playoffs and 25 million dollars, maybe then he will realize he screwed up but I doubt it.
    Now if LSU can't afford to pay the NIL market value price, then the onus falls on Woodward. Either way it is still a failure.
