    I got 3 out of 4 rightt, only to be tripped up on the 'Choice Bass', with the GAIA 2 rendition sounding slightly _thinner_ to my ear (headphones) than the SH-101, whereas the prior patches were the opposite, i.e., the GAIA 2 was a little richer in tonality than the original IMO.
    That aside, if you were to drop either into a mix then you'd be very hard pressed to tell the difference.

    I got 1, 2 and 3 right but couldn’t tell which was which on the 4th one. Nice job, you were able to make them sound quite similar.

    I’m a recovered analog purist. I owned and SH101 forever as my main synth. These days, I prefer the Zencore versions of it to the original. I’m most curious about the GAIA 2 as the hands on controls make me want to dive into it!

      Honestly, I'd go get a System 1,its like $300,and has ACB tech, so it's spot on perfect. Plus, you can always plug out tons of other synths, like a J8, Promars, etc. For 1/3 the price.

    • @BigMuff520
      @BigMuff520 Před 7 měsíci

      @@SlaserX that’s a great idea. I hadn’t realized the price had come down that much. I’m gonna look for one.

    Nice comparison Scott. Interestingly, when you compare some genuine SH101s with each other, even those aren't exactly the same. The Gaia 2 engine sounds pretty close so if you're after a 101 sound, the comparisons you did are potayto-potahto different - definitely close enough.
    I didn't bother guessing which was which because I would get them all wrong. 😁

    I missed this when you put it out. Excellent work. I got 3 of 4 right, but it's patch 3 that's the real tell. I think all patches other than patch 3 are totally passable but patch 3 just shows the limitations of the filter on the gaia.

  • @thesrabbit
    @thesrabbit Před 7 měsíci +1

    I got ‘em all. The most obvious difference was lazor boy. At high resonance the Zencore filter doesn’t break up the same as the real thing. It’s too smooth. The ACB 101 does a much better job of emulating that break up and grit. Sure wish my S-1 had all the Zencore FX though. It needs a distortion.

    GAIA 2 is worth the asking, it's the new old and new. Does stuff that is just screaming to be played live with that UI.

    Great video! How do you access the SH 01 MODEL SOUND ENGINE sounds? Is it thru utilities settings. ..? Im still waffling thru the MANUAL.

  • @RikMaxSpeed
    @RikMaxSpeed Před 7 měsíci +1

    The real major difference is that a genuine Roland SH-101 costs more than a Gaia 2, isn’t polyphonic, is a way more limited synth, and requires expensive maintenance.

  • @robertcrystals
    @robertcrystals Před 7 měsíci

    as similar as you'd ever need for the sound, but that bass is no where near it. It's really about the playability of it though. Put an SH101 in front of me in the dark and I can pull any sound and have a great time doing it.

  • @Death_By_Media
    @Death_By_Media Před 7 měsíci

    The 101 in my System 1 would be more than acceptable to me if I cared about the “ 101 sound “, now the SH2 and System 100 though …chefs kiss . Unironically I actual prefer the “101” in my SH4d because it’s not similar due to the much more aggressive filter .

    Having the two similar-but-not-identical sounds in the right and left channels really was fantastic. A great concept that could definitely be utilized when recording.

    - I didn't hear much difference. Maybe the sh-101 slightly thinner ?
    - Wouldn't it be more revealing to see the output on an oscilloscope ?

    Oh man, i've owned probably 6 or 7 SH-101s since 1995, and i got this 100% wrong!! =oD I recently got the Gaia 2 but haven't dived too deep into the 101 model yet. Maybe they can add an option to alter the EG slopes in a future update.

    Ok, maybe this is a question relating to your last video, but I know you are a live keyboardist as well, so here's my question : as an upper hand/keyboard (and in conjunction with a MODX+7), which Roland Synth would you take along to play the classic Roland Sounds for Rock/Pop Songbook : the 3-octave Gaia2 or the 4-octave System-8 ? This is not just a case of ACB vs ABM (put that in perspective through a PA system) or KeyRange, but ease of use/GUI, readability, patch switch/handling, weight, casing/solidity etc. A few second-hand system 8 appear around the same price or lower than a Gaia 2, so I thought the time is ripe for self GAS-light...

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Classic Roland sounds, I'd go with the System-8 in a heartbeat. For two reasons: 1) it's bitimbral, you can layer and split sounds, and 2) if you need true classic Roland sounds like JP-8 and Juno-106, they are all right there already.

    I got them all right, I dont like the Gaia2 sound from any of the demos I've heard and it was apparent to me when I heard that distasteful blandness coming through. The actual name GAIA is an awesome title for a synth you would think it would be some classic for new age sounds.
