What Does Heroin Withdrawal Feel Like? | The Misery Of Being Dopesick

  • Heroin withdrawal was one of the worst experiences I've ever gone through and I've gone through it multiple times including twice in jail.
The symptoms are similar to the flu except ten times worse. They last longer, and there is a level of depression and anxiety to heroin withdrawal that makes the flu seem like a walk in the park. Every cell in my body was in pain and I had fluids coming out of places I didn't think were possible.
It is very rare to die from heroin detox but the person going through it sure feels like they're going to die. That's why relapse is so prevalent during withdrawal. The user knows that one bag will get rid of all their symptoms instantly, but when that bag wears off they'll be back at square one.

Comparing opiate withdrawal to the flu is like comparing a BB Gun to a 12 gauge shotgun.

    • @heatherrogers3411
      @heatherrogers3411 Před rokem

I've always told people that I heard compare opiate w/d to the flu that not only is it the absolute worst, most indescribably horrible version of the flu, it's a flu that you can be over with just ONE SHORT PHONE CALL. A two min call to yr dealer, a few min wait for delivery, and BOOM! Your well and rockin' in the free world once again.. the flu is GONE, as if you'd never been sick at all. Except obviously your not ok, and feeling this kind of "well" just means you've lost to the dope yet again. And if you're ever going to be free from this addiction (as free as we can get, that is) all this short surrender means is tomorrow you get to wake up and "choose" that brutal, soul-destroying flu one more time and pray this time you find the strength to last the horrific sickness out. Because if you can't dig deep enough to find that strength it's not ever a matter of "IF" it kills you and devastates your loved ones, it's always a matter of "WHEN" it kills you. I'm praying for all of us this morning. Love and hugs, yall 🥰😘

Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

This is the best descriptions of heroin withdrawal that I've seen! One thing I notice that no one ever mentions, is that time CRAWLS when you're going through withdrawal, and even beyond that period. So that makes it even worse, because as horrible as you're feeling, it seems to last forever. Especially with the lack of sleep and uncomfort, each day feels like three days. When you're using the days, weeks and months just fly by. When you quit, time crawls for the first month or two.

    • @aaronmullet8211
      @aaronmullet8211 Před 7 měsíci +4

My friends always ask me to describe the pain because I say it’s the worst feeling ever. And most people think the worst feeling the body can experience is pain. I ask them, would you rather have me kick you in the balls or be trapped in a closed coffin for 3 days with 500 ants and spiders and mosquitos and snakes? Obviously they say kick me in the balls. I say why? It hurts worse. Then they kind of understand. “Torture” is the best term to describe opioid/opiate withdrawal. And the worst torture lasts for 3-7 days. You can’t explain withdrawal to someone who hasn’t experienced it. They’ll never understand. And it’s not their fault. No one can until they experience it themselves. Someone who had experienced human torture can relate to the experience in terms of understanding the length of time of discomfort being a huge factor. The worst experience the human body can have depends on the length of the experience. Would you rather have 100 bug bites for an hour or 1 bug bite for the rest of your life? I’d take 100 for an hour. Calculating pain mathematically is intensity x duration. 100 pain x 1 hour is 100. 20 pain for 7 days is 3360. The math explanation and the torture explanation is the best way to try and make someone else understand. For women I say would you rather have the worst part of your child labor for 5 minutes or a less painful child birth that lasts for 16 hours? A rape victim. Which is worse a really painful rape for 2 minutes or a semi painful rape for 9 hours? Using time to relate to withdrawal is the only way. If opioid withdrawals only lasted an hour. That would be awesome.

There is a place that all unrepentant addicts go if they die in that state that would make you wish to live eternally with just with drawls. In hell for the first time one realizes what it is like to not have God...anywhere. You see here on earth we actually can't feel to the fullest. This is the dream, heaven and hell are the reality. There you can see fully, smell fully, hear fully, feel to the fullest. Because in the flesh we are in a fallen state. In the spirit you are in your truest state and you can burn in fire and not die. Your mind and my mind cannot comprehend the torture. Imagine the desperation at first realizing that there is a hell and you are in it. My brother did just that 3 years ago. As a heroin addict he killed himself with Fentanyl. Then he found out what true pain is.

When users were thrashing and kicking their legs all over their beds with the restless leg syndrome the old expression, "kicking the habit" was coined. @heathertogers3411 You're the only other person besides me on CZcams who has mentioned the origin of "Kicking".
I gave 22 years of my life to junk/pills/blow, and us old heads called what they call Restless Leg Syndrome today we called "jimmy legs"..."Ohh I got the jimmy legs, baby, I think there's some pinkies (10mg. Roxicodone) in a Robitussin box in the cabinet under the fish tank..." Of course there weren't...and you gotta make the decision: Do I spend energy I don't have on a mission that I KNOW will fail?" The answer is YES. Desperate times and all. 98.75% of the time the search nets nothing but you found a book you'd thought you lost (Permanent Midnight by Jerry Stahl and that's the LAST thing you want to read right now) and maybe you sit on the floor and cry some. However, 1.25% of the time, a miracle occurs-- you shine the shitty light of your phone under the bed and amid the dust bunnies and some Tootsie Pop wrappers that have fallen behind the headboard (Tootsie Pops is a virtual FOOD GROUP when you are sick...at least they stay down. When you check out the candy aisle at the grocery store, take a look at the Tootsie Pops. If you've caught it before the kid squares the shelves, you might see bags tossed onto other candies, like a nocturnal creature has been foraging. This is almost always an addict who needs the bag to have the right number of certain flavors...Grape, Cherry and Orange are mine, but I always put the bags in a somewhat acceptable way, but I've been at a store where I nudge my (always sober, who stuck by me all the way) wife and say "Check it out" and she sees and says, "The poor thing...I hope he gets relief." Can't it be a "she", I think.
Sorry, I always blather on too long. All the best and Be Well.

Ha! While I’ve never done street drugs I do have Lupus and RA which both are extremely painful and due to chronic diseases my Dr RX’D me 90 Percocet 10mg and 60 Lortab/Norco 7.5 mg for 8 years. I’ve worked as a Trauma Nurse in my ED for 16+ years but never once did I imagine I would ever deal with withdrawal of any sorts.
Well, after a 9 year custody battle with my sons dad (been to prison, 14 felony charges, drug charges and sexual battery x3) I knew nothing about any of his previous charges. I enlisted in the Marines and was under the impression he was deployed with the Army. His entire family told me this the entire time. Keep in my I had never dated due to my mother passing when I was 15 years old and I had to raise 3 younger siblings due to my dad being a OTR Truck driver. I worked and took care of my responsibilities.
Anyhow, I married the first guy and believed everything he told me. Thankfully, I woke up after he went crazy for 3 days straight resulting in me having my son at 6 months and being in labor at home for 23 days before my dad came over bc he hadn’t heard from me. I was flown to a larger hospital where I laid another 16 days after my water had ruptured.
He abused my son at 5 years old and I hired a attorney and followed every step I knew to protect my son. The courts drug it out and after 4 years of still fighting he would lie and say I called him and made threats even though he couldn’t even provide police with my number. I ended up with cancer after my appendix ruptured and had to have a complete hysterectomy on a Wednesday The following weekend two days later I went to get my son from school and police approached me stating I had a warrant in a neighboring city where he lived. And I went to jail after having no criminal record at all. The worst part was, due to it being a Friday the magistrate and judges had left and couldn’t set a bond. Then Monday was a holiday so I was forced to stay until Tuesday evening. It was the worst hell you can imagine. They refused to administer my pain meds even though I was only 2 days post surgery and cut hip to hip. Plus I learned what withdrawal was from the maintenance meds I had been taking for years. I ended up on life support two days after coming home my incision had gotten infected and busted opened which led to staphylococcus. I ended up suing the county which named the police and judge. Within 6 months of my filing they wanted to settle.
So be glad you didn’t go through it, I would wish it even on my ex. I felt like I was dying and at times had wandered how I could just to get some relief. It scares me to even think about.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give context regarding what led to my situation.

    2. Buy some magnesium. Take one before bed. Just fantastic for restless legs and sleep.

I never got restless leg syndrome during withdrawal, I always got restless legs, arms, and back syndrome. That restlessness wasn’t only limited to the leg muscles, but also in the arms and back muscles as well. Any sedative (tylonal pm, seroquel) would make it 10x worse. In order to get some relief before I attempted to get some sleep, I had to strenuously lift weights and over work the muscles so they’d be sore and not able to be restless.

I don't know if you've tried other sedatives besides the couple you mentioned but I've found that even though I too generally have a negative reaction to meds like seroquel, trazadone, and others in that category, neurontin (gabapentin) has been an absolute Godsend for both my (full body!) restless leg syndrome and my insomnia. I can't say that I actually sleep (its not like a "normal", deep, restful sleep) but the neurontin definitely helps me achieve at least a state of semi- unconsciousness, which thankfully helps the time go by a bit faster and helps with the depression and anxiety I usually find myself drowning in that first couple of weeks. Just a suggestion; I hope everyone is well this morning!

Stay strong William. You can do it. I would highly recommend reaching out to a rehab of detox or even your doctor to help you get the ball rolling with recovery. It can be very overwhelming and it helps to have someone helping you navigate it. Also connect with others in recovery. It takes away so much of the burden when we just relate and share with those that have been through it. If your not working right now this is probably the perfect time to go to a long-term rehab and focus the next few months on yourself it will pay dividends in the future I promise you.

Not proud of this...but I have almost 20years experience as a slave to that bloody drug... Some withdrawal is much worse than others, obviously it depends how much you're using. I remember the first time I ever had withdrawal, I was soo bloody anxious and panicky and I was on the verge of panic, and I couldn't get comfortable no matter what I did. I couldn't relax, it was horrific, in the end, you're not even worried about getting 'high', you just soo uncomfortable and panicked an on edge that ALL YOU WANT is just to get some product into your system so that you can feel NORMAL and not be in terrible discomfort. Even mild heroin withdrawal is absolutely brutal...at the worst case scenario, you'll literally be wanting to f die!!!. You can't sleep when you're in acute heroin withdrawal, and you start to go delerious from that too. Don't f get on heroin, you'll loose absolutely everything and you'll learn a whole new meaning of suffering. Just don't f do it

I know it's an older video, but you've described it perfectly! I've just been out of the detox for a week, had a terrible time there! Tapered off far too quickly. I was on 180 mg oxy per day, and wanted to reduce it with suboxone, I had an allergic reaction to that, so after a long consultation, after 24 hours of not having anything, I received 5 mg methadone. That didn't help. Had a hellish night. The next morning I was given 35 mg of methadone, and that was reduced every day by 5 mg. I'm home but still feel terrible! Those restless legs, heavy heart palpitations, sweating profusely after walking a meter. Shortness of breath, diarrhoea, vomiting, a lot of weight loss. You don't have severe dysphoria and adrenaline surges + panic attacks with flu. You can get comfortable in bed with flu, you can't get comfortable at all withdrawal.
You don't wish to die when you have flu - in withdrawal, you would take a bullet to the head stop the suffering.
Withdrawal is possibly the worst way you can possibly feel without being tortured.

I did the same thing but slipped found myself in jail detoxing from methadone by the time I got out about 3 months later I felt a little better.............. (still felt sick tho) got on suboxone and haven't looked back...methadone ruined my teeth and twore my body apart plus going to the methadone clinic was a shit show. Good luck 🤞🏻

I've been a heroin addict for 23 years a benzodiazepine addict for 12 pregablin for 9 and now I'm borderline personality disorder with an alcohol problem on top of that so my future is not looking bright to say the least. In England especially in the south coast it's not good enough what help is available I'm at my wits end now and if i was brave enough i would end my life now literally but i am not built that way. Please pray for me i need all the help can get. Love, peace and empathy

I’m clean now but when I was on it about 4-6 years. Every year I went through CT withdrawal. Luckily my parents helped everytime lol but it’s true that each withdrawal gets tougher because it’s Fckn tiring!! My last withdrawal was the fastest cycle but it was a fkn tough one because it was true CT with no weed to help. My worst symptoms were the burning hot constant waves, angst, the inside of your body is like literally poop, energy was fckn non existent, and everything else because the pain intensifies by 100 lol

Phase 1 withdrawl symptoms: runny nose, watery eyes, yawning and general growing discomfort.
Phase two: all previous symptoms increased plus diarrhea, aches, anxiety, regret, depression, loneliness
Phase 3: all previous symptoms even worse now plus the worst one of all RESTLESS LEG / RESTLESS BODY. You feel unbearably uncomfortable. Your mind is a prison and you won't sleep at all for days. Eventually you'll get a little sleep here and there but it'll be weeks before you actually can sleep normal again. Oh yeah and chills/heat sweats
    It's rough.

Restless leg syndrome seems to affect my entire body. I feel like I want to run a marathon.
The worst part of withdrawing for me is the intense depression. It's why I keep falling of the wagon.

Use kratom to take a big step down ... and eventually squash that too. I know it's easier said than done, but I've done it, and you can too. I never used kratom to quit heroin because at the time I didn't know it existed... I'm almost 10 years clean from heroin now, and being my addict self started taking kratom recreationally until I was dependent on it.. I've now been clean from it for 2 months and I feel great. Can I ask where you're at right now in the addiction? Detoxing? Active?

That's the thing. You'd give your right bollock for an hour or 2 of sleep by day 3. Day 4 is easier. Day 5 much better. Sleep comes then but 5 days with none makes you completely fried.
