Drake is not 100% hip hop. He's a hybrid. When you listen to Say what's real, Over and other AM PM songs, you can tell that he has been inspired by hip hop. But not all of his songs are hip hop. There is RnB, dancehall and others

That’s a great way to see it. The other way round is, he exceeded as a rapper or hip hop prime artist in the beginnings, when he was around them, I mean the Waynes, the tygas, the Minajs, and the coles and Kendricks were all starting or were hot at the time. Over the years I think he’s evolved in different areas over the others. Eg: Tunechi is like top 5 greatest of all time but he kinda uses the same approach over Rap beats, “producer plays beat, and he start spitting” just as a pure rapper and eeyyy that’s Great. That’s Wayne. My point is drake knows he has the ability to be versatile and wants to make music as such. everyone or anyone categorize him anyway because at the end of the day they’re gonna do it. But his ability of being versatile or having the ability to change sounds, rhythms, genres, crowds etc does not change the fact that he his the embodiment of hip hop, he was molded by it, and about 75% of the different sounds he makes, have a basic hiphop-ism to it. And additionally he can also be considered a pop, R&B, dancehall, Trapsoul music, etc. that doesn’t change the fact that he’s hip hop of course, and more.

@@maxcannon3002 If you think he's not you're disregarding his hip-hop mix tapes and numerous Hip-hop records throughout his 18 year career.
Peeps who call him pop mainly hate the fact that he can actually rap well and actually sing well and do both on the same record.
Before him, no other artist in Hip-hop or R&B were doing that, they'd have to get features to fill in those blanks or eventually autotune the shiz out of their voice and still not sound half as good.
He even opened the doors for someone like Chris Brown after he almost ruined his career with the whole Rihanna thing. First artist I remember getting as big as he was in Hip-hop as a rookie without a record deal. After that so many tried to copy that formula. So for a guy who copied so many and still brought something original that inspired an entire generation in hip-hop...to call him just pop or not hip-hop is asinine and would mean someone like Kendrick ain't hip-hop either by that same measure.

"Hip Pop" feels like the perfect way to describe Drake. I would have chosen "A rapper who makes pop music" in that poll.
Talented and massively successful dude, but I don't think it was unfair for Yasiin Bey to say most of his music is very commercial these days. Would be nice if he used his platform every once in a while to speak more to the deeper issues affecting us, but of course he's not obligated to. Sometimes folks just wanna vibe. He's clearly picked his lane. But I think he still gets insecure when the "hip hop purists" don't accept him.

He’s too 10 greatest but c’mon everywhere now is the Travis, boomin, Don toliver, Carti, YB, Yeat, Uzi, Yatchy, 21, Lil baby, etc. and they’re not even near Wayne but there’re making greater numbers than Wayne now. My point is the new rappers are playing a different game, the 3pt ball, like Curry vs Jordan. Jordan is like Wayne, the travis and the new rappers are like Curry, they’re changing the game and they still hiphop because that’s what molded them. They’re just slightly bigger than “hip hop” if it’s considered to be only a culture tho. Back to Drake’s case, He’s not a 3pt shooter only or a Midrange shooter only, but He’s been working to be able to Score from all areas of the court. And that doesn’t make him less of a hip hop artist but greater than just that. Far greater. He’s too versatile to be fitted in one genre. Is like fitting Lebron at SF while he can play and guard 1-5😂. Drake is the Lebron of Music bruh he can do it all😂😂😂💔

I'm a 55-year-old black male, I've been around hip hop and rap since it's inception, so I think I know a thing or two about what is hip hop, and what is not, and I'm here to tell all the haters that yes, Drake is indeed hip hop, but he is so much more, than just hip hop, check Drake's family history, and the family he was born into, It was all funk and soul music, but being from Toronto, where I'm also from, we were raised on every single genre of music here, and learn to love them equally, and that is what Drake is, and he's got more bangers than Mos Def!!!! and if rappers could do what Drake does they would do it but they can't, so stop the hate. 🇨🇦

Nobody said Eminem was pop when he was doing the same breakout. Drake wasn’t to be the biggest artist ever, which he has, but that doesn’t mean his music isn’t rooted deeply in hip hop and the culture means it’s just popular hip hop

    • @ochomunna270
      @ochomunna270 Před 6 měsíci

Eminem was based in the hip-hop subgenre of horrocore, which is grimy and hip-hop through and through. He just found more commercial success because he's an amazing rapper who happens to be white, but he's totally "a hip-hop purist" who prides himself on his pen.
Drake is different, he consciously went Pop for sustained commercial success hence why he adapts to any popping sounds to appeal to their audience and even incorporates ghostwriting into his craft(an absolute No-No in hip-hop principles).
So they're different scenarios, Eminem is the best selling hip-hop artiste of all time and never ever went Pop.
Instead the complaints about Em has been "he raps too fast", "I don't like his new material, we prefer his old stuff", "he's more successful because he's white", "he uses many words that are not that deep".
No one ever says "Eminem is Pop".

Drake’s attempt to be relatable emotionally is overshadowed by his lyrics alienating his fan base by naming people we don’t know and places we don’t know or will ever go. His core audience no longer relates so he tries to gain new listeners from other fanbases which comes across as inauthentic and that’s not of the culture. That’s the true Drake dilemma: do we continue to champion someone not of the culture? This is the reason the culture questions its embrace of Gunna and his return.

With that said, Mathematics is probably my favorite track on there. Nonetheless, Drake is pure hiphop. As hiphop becomes widely accepted e.i. jingles, commercials, etc…. just because one becomes popular to the masses doesn’t mean he is “pop” in genre. He’s just a very VERY successful rap artist. Drake represents everything hiphop is capable of doing… and he does all things well. Remember when Mos sang on a few tracks? Andre 3000? If those guys were to do the same numbers as Drake, do they automatically become less hiphop? I say all this respectfully and Im interested in your thoughts 💯

People who only listen to hotline bling and in my feelings are going to judge and say Drake can't rap, Drake is not lyrical, etc etc. Drake can rap his ass off when he wants to, he's a great storyteller. However he's very strategic, because he knows what gets played and what does it get played and he goes based on what can make him popular and make him money.
Drake is not going to make a song with a conscience message about the streets. Because he never wrapped about selling drugs, killing people, going to prison, because he never lived the street life so he's going to rap about what he knows and what he's have experienced.

Michael Jackson, who passed away 15 years ago, remains an unparalleled force in pop music. His album sales persistently rival those of current top stars, even in the era of streaming. While Drake has solidified his position in rap and pop, comparing him to the King of Pop feels like a stretch. MJ’s influence goes beyond music, encompassing dance, business acumen, and songwriting prowess-traits evident in his enduring success. Drake, in his own right, has mastered a different formula, effortlessly connecting with diverse genres and adapting to evolving musical landscapes, albeit with some criticism. Both are legends, but MJ’s imprint on pop music is unparalleled, setting the standard for success that artists, including Drake, still measure themselves against.

We can’t applaud Hip Hop’s growth, influence, and reach but then turn around and say someone isn’t hip hop because he didn’t exactly grow up in the mold of the culture. Drake is that extent hip hop has reached, a suburban kid from Canada. That’s a plus, hip hop has brewed one of the biggest artists whether we like it or not. Call it what you want but without hip hop could Drake have ever had a start when rapping was his primary passion?
