    In the racing industry, we coin two phrases, Tall Gears and Short Gears. Tall Gears are those with what we call long legs, they allow the vehicle to reach maximum speed on a long racetrack, such as Charlotte Motor Speedway or Road Atlanta..... Short gears are those with short legs, they are used in events where the vehicle needs to accelerate rapidly but rarely reaches top speed or anything greater than 3rd gear. These "Short Gears" are usually confined to rally events, hill climbs, and autocross events....
    Short gears (such as the 4:10) will allow quick acceleration, which might be effective coming out of the hole, but they will suffer greatly on top end as the vehicle reaches it potential redline RPM too quickly and therefore never reaches the maximum potential speed of the vehicle.......
    Compare that to a ...say 2:90 gear which will not be as fast off the line, however it will allow the vehicle to reach much faster speeds as the final ration of Engine RPM to axel turns is vastly reduced compared to the 4:10, allowing the vehicle to have much "longer legs" (aka lasts longer) and therefore achieve much higher speeds than the short legged 4:10 gearing....... A 4:10 differential at 7k RPM, produces about 25% to 30% less top end speed than a vehicle with a 2:90 differential (given all other things are equal).....
    That said, it becomes necessary to understand what the car is going to be used for, in order to understand its relative rear gear setup. Try using a 4:10 gear at Charlotte motor speedway, and you will be the slowest vehicle on the track. If however you are in a autocross where you car will not exceed 35 mph, then the 4:10 gear will shine in that scenario as it will achieve those lower speeds quicker than a long legged gear ( such as a 2:90).
    Using a 4:10 gear in a street car, will eat a hole in your pocket fuel mileage wise..... further it will cause your engine to operate at a higher RPM, which results in top end cylinder wear over time......
    The more ideal approach is to keep your gearing 3:31 or 3:55 and rotate your tire size, This will in effect allow one to change their final gearing without permanently swapping their ring and pinion setup........ Do the math related to tire size and differential gearing, knowing that smaller tires turn faster....

    4.10s are fine, especially if you plan to remain naturally aspirated. If you plan to add forced induction later, 3.73s would be my choice.

      3.31s, all the cars making killer times have 3.31s, 3.73 is still too aggressive, you'll still melt your tires and lack that top end speed.

    Great video. Going to be installing a pair of 4.10 gears on my Crown Victoria after watching this. Was originally going to select 3.73 but the moment I heard, "Go big or go home!", my mind was set! These gears will compliment the full exhaust I already have installed really well. Stay tuned on the project, I have a few videos already! Keep up the great videos Nate!

      I was thinking the same thing. I have a 2006 lincoln town car. I have a jmod done and 2 1/2 inch piping from the cats going into a X pipe then out to a roush axle back exhaust. Also, 1 big thing that helps ALOT IS the jms pedalmax. That eliminated the drive by wire. When I first saw the reviews on CZcams I thought they were just over exaggerating.. but it's the best 250 bucks I spent on the car. Quick question 🤔 wht would you think would be better. A procharger or a edelbrock stage 1 supercharger? I was originally thinking the procharger but, ever race I see on CZcams procharger gets smoked by the twin screw supercharger. Any thoughts?

    Enjoyed this! Have a 60,000 mile one owner 2006 s197.Added a Roush CAI and Extreme axle backs,and a Barton shifter as of now.These cars are crying for better rear gears,it seems to me.My Boss 302's and my Boss 351 years ago all had 3.91's in them,and to me that is the perfect street setup.I was away from this until last year when i retired,and i see that Ford doesn't make a 3.91 gear set,and the 390 gears available people say tend to whine.So,i guess it's going to be the 410's.Another thing i found out is that if you go higher than 3.73,you lose your cruise control.Mods for this year will hopefully be Detroit Rockers,and gears,with headers and mid pipe slated for next year...I hope!lol Thanks again,sir!!

  • @lc7192
    @lc7192 Před 4 lety +3

    Actually the 3:31 rear differential gears are stock for the S197 Mustang GT. A lot of dealers ordered the 3:55 gears for the best balance in power and miles per gallon and that is where people mistakenly say that the 3:55 gears are stock, I have 3:55 gears in my 2007 Mustang GT and regularly get 25-26 on the highway and 16 mpg in town, I live at 4,500 ft in altitude so the 3:55 gears are primo. I would only consider changing to the 3:73 gears because I’m getting ready to order the Roush supercharger.

    Love the video kid. For the tire selection, I have Nitto NT555, 275/40ZR18 103W, on all four corners. I've used them at the track and gripped pretty good. Here in NY, I don't drive my car in the snow and from sitting in the garage, I don't have dry rot, or flat spots on them. Had them for 4 years and they still look good.

And with those 4.10s you got great acceleration but the only trade off it kills your top end. What I mean by that is that long 5th gear is going to kick in a lot sooner. This weekend I installed my O/R H Pipe from Pypes and man does it sound amazing with the flow master axleback I already had on. I also put on a GT500 spoiler. I had a question though...when it comes to emissions I was planning on just throwing back on my stock h pipe to pass test then putting my O/R one again, what do you recommend ?

      I know this is an old comment but trust me I've been in the mustang world for years and years, gears especially for an automatic is by far the best value mod you get besides maybe a tune. Just make sure you get it done it done at a good shop for a fair price and assuming it's a mustang make sure you use the Ford racing gears so it doesn't cause hear whine. Honestly gears, are going to have the best performance increase from anything except for Super/Turbo chargers or Nitrous nothing else will compare, still a great bang for the buck even with the mpg hit if you daily your mustang

    It does not appear that you have modded to a one piece aluminum drive shaft yet? This is an easy install that you can do yourself. The stock 2 piece steel shaft is over 40lbs. The one piece aluminum is like 20lbs so you have less rotating mass which transfers the power to your wheels faster. With the aluminum shaft you will increase acceleration times and especially coupled with the 4.10 gears. Research the aluminum shaft. I highly recommend that mod. Also, the aluminum shaft is stronger than the steel shaft. You also don't have to worry about having the carrier bearing failing, a notorious issue for 2-piece driveshafts.
