Graves never wanted to go through with his orders, Shepherd was forcing him. You can tell because at first in MWII, he was trying to tell TF-141 to leave. And in MWIII, it's revealed Shepherd ordered Graves to kill TF-141.

Yeah, like he was right to detain the mexican special forces because of their connections to the cartel but graves simply told 141 to leave and its only when the whats his name guy attacked graves is when 141 started to engage which tbh i feel like it was more of a attack because they attacked situation and i think that soldier that fired was what set it off because i think that graves did a dont do anything stupid move before that soldier fired hell im pretty sure that graves was also gonna let the mexican guy leave until he went crazy
@@levicarpenter5509 Yeah, Graves completely rejected his orders from Shepherd because he didn't want to hurt his men, simply because he cared about them. He only attacked them when Alejandro attacked Graves. How much he cares for his men is especially evident when he betrays Shepherd in court, because of what he tried to make him do.
I mean philip graves is just the victim of bad writing ngl.

That makes Shepherd’s comment of ‘He’s a dog with a bone and I highly recommend you don’t try and take it’ way more nasty than on the surface level. Cause that’s what he thinks of Graves. A dog to loosen the leash on people he wants gone. Essentially a tool for him to use.

Good point dude, Gold Eagle Actual was the one handling the shots, since he was the one who recognized Shadow Company's abilities for Covert Operations. Shepherd was the one who initiated the cover up after the mishap with the Ultranationalists and denied sending reinforcements. And since Shadow Co. was employed by Shepherd, technically the latter's the one writing the cheques

I'll be honest I feel like the stuff post Oil Rig in MW2 was probably made by new writers while the first half came from what's left behind by CoD 2019 writers.
I get the feeling Shadow Comapny of Graves to an extent was never ment to betray you. They did this for nostalgia reasons
I think their mistake was when they doubled down on it for the entirety of MWIII's campaign
@@savagenoob1016 MW3 is a mistake, they just slapped a lot of nothing burgers as a story, made Makarov a perfectionist asshole obsessed with timing but ultimately nothing happened in MW3. MW3 isn't made for its campaign, it was made for the multiplayer. Its a goddamn disgrace from the perfect fresh reboot of MW 2019.

no. the next mission was far too iconic in reMW2 for it to be made on the fly by a new set of writers. That much care had to have had a bunch work put into it well along the dev cycle.
The main writer worked on all 3. We lost some on MW2 but the writing team was still solid. I looked up the writing team of MW3, and besides that guy who worked on MW1/2 they were all hired 1/2 years before MW3 released and are responsible of games like saint row remake, and they’re all women (nothing wrong with it, just saying).
Something else to note is that Commander Graves only fired after Ghost killed two men in Shadow Company and Soap was holding one of his men hostage

Well the whole thing started when Alejandro tried to attack but was detained however one of the shadows fired first in which that caused the whole fiasco to be unnecessarily more aggressive.
And Graves shot Soap’s shoulder to make him release his comrade.
I think if he wanted him dead in the moment, he would have executed him after he released the operator.

And to think, Dipalo and his team's death was all for nothing because Gold Eagle refused to give them air support when their missile truck convoy was ambushed, he left Graves' convoy team to die on a whim to try to cover up his deadly mistake!
Even Graves was desperate to try to save his men by requesting a QRF and air support, but ultimately denied by Shepherd.

At least the OG Shepard was motivated to restore hope into his military and country and was willing to make a lot of sacrifices to ensure the ends justify the means

My only issue with this theory is that Shepard was calling the shots, not Graves. Shepard didn't want TF-141 to find out that they're the reason AQ had American missiles. However, I do not think Graves wanted to hurt them.
Well its also worth knowing, General Shepherd is the reason Iran had American Missiles.
He's only using Shadow Company as scapegoats so he won't get his name dirty
Honestly if they owned up and didn't hide it the first time despite some backlash it would've went down another way and overall i think they would've worked together still
I think there's also another reason as to why Graves likely distrusted Alejandro as he and the Shadows arrived later and not at the same time as Ghost and Soap and so missed that little Speech that Alejandro gave to Ghost and Soap on their first mission, about how they care about the city and its people and how the Cartel seem to hate the Mexican Special Forces due to them being uncorruptable and of course it would have help solidify Ghost and Soap's trust in Alejandro due to them driving through the town, whereas Graves likely got told the same story back at the base, where there wasnt any real visual evidence to back up the claim.
I honestly hope they bring Graves back for MW4 and actually make him a good operator in Multiplayer, it feels odd when playing MW3 to have Graves on the same side as Makarov and Valeria. Sure MW2's made more sense since Shadow Company was seen as the "Bad guys" but I wished they'd made some little changes to the operator section in MW3. I know the multiplayer part doesn't really matter but if they're going to make the multiplayer part of the story, then it'd make sense to have the operators in the same category. Its why I liked MW2019's operator section where you had 4 sort of sub-factions on each each side. Again, I know thats a weird thing to go into but I thought I'd mention it. But I also hope they make Graves a good guy in MW4's campaign, if he makes an appearance.
Let the goddamn franchise die, it was already a hot shit with MW2 writing, further butchered with DLC MW3. You hoping for a MW4 is the problem why AAA studios love to recycle their old beloved titles to a steaming pile of crap.
Graves was just stating the “legal” reason he could use to justify taking the base from the Mexican Special Forces. Because Alejandro knew the identity of Valeria(the drug lord) and since she was a former member of his unit, that could then be used a justification and reasoning for Alejandro potentially being corrupt as well and since that chance is there, removing resources and control from the Mexican Special Forces is necessary. Legal mumbo jumbo really. The reason why Graves followed through with the orders Shepard gave him is because he knew that if Shadow Company exposed to the international community(a bullshit organization even in real life if you ask me), then there is a chance that his men can lose their clients, jobs, and sources of income for their families since they would potentially have no work. Graves was looking out for the integrity of his men and their means of providing for their families.
Well Commander Graves, is just a morally grey character he's a PMC and also back when General Shepherd does a " off the books " operation with DiPaolo and the other Shadow PMCs transporting the American Missiles to help the American backed rebels but failed to do so and got ambushed by Konni Group its worth noting that was General Shepherd's fault and Graves' wanted to help his men out but was denied by Shepherd because he doesn't want the truth to get revealed.
He didn't even try and think to kill Ghost and Soap. He just restrained Alejandro he didn't want to kill him. We also forgot to notice General Shepherd ordered him to find TF141 operators dead or alive in Las Almas so basically the warcrimes is by Shepherd's hands he's just using the Shadow Company PMC as a scapegoat
Graves was also a businessman. Even though he might be loyal to his country, he receives his orders from Shepherd.
The amount of times I've seen people say that he broke character when he "Switched sides" is laughable. It was in his nature to be loyal to money, and the interests of his country and customers (Shepherd).
Graves and Alejandro were the best characters of the series, one is a man that is good at his job, wants to protect people and got screwed by bureaucrats, the other is a man who went outside of the system, fights corruption, and helps his community, still screwed by bureaucrats. Both guys have the same goals, same dedication, Graves is just ten years behind Alejandro, he comes back, does the right thing after it all.
We need just a full on Sicario campaign with Graves and Alejandro burying the hatchet and getting to work

With Alejandro's knowledge of the city and terrain they're working with and Graves his recources and his own skill because he's an insanely skilled soldier after all. I think they'd be quite the duo and imagine the banter lmao

Well i don't see Graves as Evil Nor Good, He's a PMC they are Neither of those factions, They just do Whatever that makes Em' Money, They In the game look like the help bad or Good guys like Konni and Shadow, In Reality PMCs are all about Business not Evil/Good so i feel like he did this For Money or a Good Base For his soldiers to Stay in, He Worked with TF141(the good guys) and Shepherd(The Bad Humpty Dumty) so he Just Works with anyone for Money, so we can't really say he's Evil, He was Given the Order to Take Alejandro's Soldiers to His Gulag, It was Because Shepheard"deader than the Grass in my front Lawn" Ass Told him to, Brother is like Death(literally) Death is not Good or Evil, It's Just Doin' It's Job at Balancing the Worlds Animals,we can't really Blame him for This Because it felt like he was Forced to do This because if he did on his Own Will than he Wouldn't Give them a Chance to even Run Away but he did, That's Why he's still Workin' With them to show that he was forced and got his Revenge on Shepherd on Court By Showing his True Colors, This man is on his Redemption Arc(This tooks Ages To Write Jesus Christ)

I do find it interesting that Graves ends up restraining Alejandro instead of just shooting him right then and there as he went for Graves because as a soldier, you'd imagine he would've pulled up his rifle or sidearm and shot. No thoughts, no second guessing, just shoot, especially considering that we've established Graves' mistrust for Alejandro. But for some reason Graves didn't kill Alejandro. Why?
I guess that can be explained by a few things, but the one thing that came to mind for me was the fact that Soap and Ghost trusted Alejandro, so Graves didn't kill him because some part of him trusted Alejandro despite Graves having his own doubts of Alejandro's loyalty.
Interesting video, and it sheds a different light into that scene and Graves as a character.

MW 2 made me a kid again it was so nice
Commander Phillip Graves is a character of modern warfare who is perhaps the most difficult to understand.
It is very difficult to decide whether he is good or bad, he maintained friendship with TF-141 for a very long time, and then suddenly betrayed them.
Nothing can be said with certainty as to why he did this at that time.
But there is one thing, if he wanted, he could have killed Soap very easily, but he only injured him and gave him time to escape.
But we cannot say that Alejandro Vargas is a bad person because he has not done anything till now that would prove him bad.
If he was bad, he would never have asked Graves to kill the Mexican Army, if he was working for drug lords, he would never have supported TF-141.
Even when Valeria breaks out of Mexico's prison and escapes, Alejandro heads to Al Majrah to stop her, which we haven't seen in the game yet.
In Modern Warfare III, Makarov was talking about a shadow friend, but we still don't know who he is, many people are saying that it must be Graves.
But in MW III, Graves' shadow company has caused huge losses to Kooni Group.
Graves traps General Shepherd by saying that he was given orders by General Shepherd to kill TF-141, but he did not follow those orders.
Graves was only a triggermam. Shepard called the shots. That's why Price is more compelled to kill Shepard than Graves. And he is a PMC; he knows how dirty it gets in the operations where PMCs operate.
This made the story so much more complex and interesting to me. Thanks for everything you do! Keep up the great work.

Didn't even play the games yet, just watched some of Graves's videos, and I immediately put him as a normal responsible man!
Graves is no saint but I can understand why he acted that way.

Might I remind everyone that Graves is the leader is a PMC, which are notorious for not caring about morals doing whatever they're told if it means they get something from it. For the standards of hired guns, Graves is a fucking saint for how many chances he gave Alejandro and for trying to de-escalate the situation instead of just shooting the three of them.
People forget that Graves and Shadow Company are mercenaries.
They do what they are paid for, and even then Graves STILL tried to tell TF141 to leave before reluctantly attacking. And to be fair, the Ghosts attacked first.
He had no loyalty for Shepherd, he was just getting paid by him. As is the life of a merc.

If only there was an option midway through the mission where you could decide to leave n call Price & let him know & then go back to Mexico to deal with the situation. main worry is when shadow company starts executing people who think is working for Valeria.. that’s when semi crossed the line.. make the shadows no better than Valeria… plus some of graves men are trigger happy..

@@andrewbrubaker491 It just wouldn’t make sense in the story; after Graves betrayed them, Ghost said that “anyone outside this room is a hostile”, including Shepherd, Laswell, and Cpt Price and Kyle. You wouldn’t call someone you can’t trust. They weren’t sure yet, they only trusted Rodolfo.
Graves was a good guy, contractually binded to and taking orders from a bad guy and he simply bent the rules to stay a good guy.
I really appriciate these types of content you make where you look at both sides of the story to get a better view of the storyline of MWII. I think it could also be interesting to look at the dialouge of graves and soap during the tank fight since it could be a way to understand graves' real intentions as how he looks at los vaqueros and TF 141

Something i haven't noticed before is that if you look at the clip of soap taking a hostage and the shadow shooting at him together, the operator shoots at soap as soap is moving on the other shadow.
It'd be an opportunity for the shadow that shot first to be a konni plant that happened to be there and saw the chance to destabilize shadow company and 141 ahead of time.
Right? No.

The best character in the MW reboot
His response here was reasonable enough but how can you explain what happened next? He sent is his men to massacre dozens of civilians for no apparent reason all so he could try to capture Soap and Ghost.
He can't just say "I was just following orders" and then the writers just pretended that that never happened.
He wasn’t massacring civilians, we didn’t see any of that, he was just enforcing a curfew, he was handling the whole situation well because Alejandro’s men were being cucked by the cartel and Graves wasn’t having that
I forgot to subscribe to you, listening to topics about PMCs having vigilance evn though they are grey sided is good to hear...and also gives an insight and somewhat of a portrayal of how sketchy PMCs are and how they actually work...also, imagine MW4 after sheperd kicks the bucket, Laswell becomes a beneficiary of Shadow Company

Good distinction to be made here, is the difference between "right" and "correct"
Graves is right to do what he does.
Right is subjective, graves is trying to do things cleanly, removing any probable threats.
However right he is though, he is incorrect.
He assumed Alejandro as a man playing the inside, and he assumed incorrectly.
Which lead to the events of Alejandro's arrest, and his assumption TF141 were similar. Similarly incorrect.
Ngl I’d 100% sell my soul for Graves
The only question to me that when Alejandro resisted, Graves didn't ordered his men to hold fire but they just starts firing at them without hesitation.
Graves should be a playable character in the next mw game. And to be the one that kills Makarov. Like we get a perspective from Price as he is mortally wounded and climaxes to where Graves kills Makarov. This to the pint where Ghost and Gaz have been killed too.

Man I love Graves. Every line from him is a banger and he proves to be a great leader whether you think he’s good OR bad.
I was really hoping shadow company would be on our side this time around, still rocking the shadow company operator in multiplayer to this day
Towards the end of MWII, Graves backstabs Shepard to try and prove that he never wanted to be enimes with TF141, and at the last cutscene danger close mission you can see price or one of the others take Graves’ photo off the kill list. But that doesn’t mean he still trusts Alejandro (correct my spelling)…
Honestly I feel that Graves was doing the best he could when he was being controlled by General Shepards orders and other interference from Shepherd. But I’m honestly looking forward to Graves is up to when the next call of duty modern warfare comes.
I would have loved to have seen more from shadow company in the campaign. Graves is a father to his men, and they would follow him into the deepest pit of hell if he so required it. I wanted some playable missions from shadow company, with operators from them. I would also like to see more of the team stuff that Graves was doing.
Start out with Mexico , Los Vaqueros and 141 (international task force, not just 4 brits in a trenchcoat, heck, you could add some of the operators from mw1 multiplayer like Otter for the oil rig mission, or Golem for the sniper mission, or Mara for her cartel knowledge, also your boy Roach) are in mexico, but they are outnumbered and outgunned, so shepherd sends in graves as per usual/
There's a mission where Shadow company moves Valeria across country in what is essentially the border scene from Sicario.
The final mission I would have liked to have seen is something called "Shadows against the wall" where SC, after engaging 141 and scouring the Las Almas, gets burnt by Shepherd. This is the last straw in their relationship after losing Dipaolo and his team, and he orders a full retreat. Shadow company operators have to get out of the city, escaping from Los Vaqueros and vengeful cartel members alike.
After successfully breaking out of Las Almas and desperate to save both himself and his men, Graves would be contacted by Laswell in MW3. She gives him a way out, a healthy bonus, and something even more tempting a lead on Makarov. Shadow Company deployed en masse to rescue both the ULF and TF141. Graves can be as smarmy as ever, and as Ghost, Farah, Alex and Soap fight to the LZ Shadow company swoops in to rescue them. Graves comes down the choppers ramp and the audience thinks "Oh no it's Loose Ends!" but he's a bro and they extract.
Interesting take on commander graves betrayal. TF141 has quite literally been called Shadow Company's brothers. Obviously for the mission for who is friendly but had developed into Shadow company operators having respect for TF141 and expressed the newly formed bond in Soap's survival mission in dialogue. While on the other-hand. Cartel corruption and the fact that the Mexican special forces are fighting against both the Mexican army and the cartel. The reason to suspect distrust is there.

when commander Graves found out about how those two know each other, that's when sh*t hit the fan cause thats when he realize he cant trust Alejandro Vargas or the 101 SAS

I mean at this point, activision fucked up the writing so bad that i wouldnt be suprised if Graves was actually just trying to be a good soldier. Why did we stray so far from the OG trilogy? I wouldve loved to see maybe Graves being conflicted with his orders, deciding wether o help shepperd or stay with 141, that kind of ordeal, But no. In the end, none of it is explained, and graves is portrayed as just another classic "oh im the slightly less bad guy, you have to kill me to get to shepperd" type stuff. Its a crime how activision fumbled the bag that hard.
I hope we get a conversation where Graves is willing to let bygones be bygones since Shepherd is now dead.

I think it might have been a combination of the fact that Shepard wanted to coverup the whole missile ordeal, but also the distrust of Alejandro might have played a little effect into it.
Things escalated to a point of no return because of a soldier lacking discipline and common sense, basically.
Graves is one of my favorite characters in my personal COD history.
You know COD should really explore more in the world of PMCs and Mercenary's given their relevancy in today's conflicts.
Also note that Graves could've easily headshot ol' Johnny boy, from that distance. but shot him in the arm/shoulder instead.

At 6:02 it's just bad sequencing probably. But my understanding is that 1. Graves (Shadow 1) zip ties Alejandro. 2. Soap tries to approach Graves. 3 Graves and Shadow 2 grunt react, by aiming at Soap to let him know not to intervine. 4. Soap reacts by grabbing Shadow 3 grunt. 5. This sudden reaction makes Shadow 2 shoot because he knows Soap is now a treat by aggressively grabbing Shadow 3. So Shadow 2 just doesn't shoot, out of the blue. And Soap won't be able to dodge the bullet anyway, while just standing there. This move by Soap makes him the aggressor, and the 1st shot by Shadow 2 justified.

Its good to see someone who can think clearly and term this whole mishandling of graves as "betrayal". I kind of debated it with my friends about how graves had better sense in professionalism than alejandro. Even soap showed how less of a restraint he has, to the point which made the question of how he was selected in special ops if he was that emotionally driven.
Cant fault ghost as he was trying to asses the situation and only resorted to action when the graves men opened fire. But he backed soap undoubtedly there.
idk why but i just love the way he pronouces the mexican names. It sounds so clean and sharp yet soft.
It's stuff like this is why I would find it good if in the next MW they make characters like Karim the bad guys or part of the bad guys. Main reasoning is because of not just recent events but because of how often yesterday's friends are now our enemies.
I like Alejandro. He's my favorite MWII character and MP character i always play as. I also like Graves. He's a man put into positions he may not agree with, but he follows his orders becasue he believes in the ultimate goal.

dude you are a GENIUS. You looked at the situation differently and revealed it from a deeper side. Maybe it wasn’t even written in the script, but I will consider it canon for myself. Graves is truly a very underrated character, I even think he is the most developed and lively, with his own pros and cons. He is not the “brave” 141, who are always on the side of good and are cute and fluffy. This is a real military commander who knows how to read people and, consequently, the situation. He has excellent instincts, and it was him who led our team along the right and effective path for the first half of the game before the “betrayal.” A small glance at the picture is enough for him to evaluate it and immediately come up with an effective plan of action on the spot, even if it is risky, he is ready to take it (the scene before the capture of the El Sin Nombre mansion)
But what will you say about the fact that he told his soldiers to find and kill two Brits? (Soap and Ghost). Perhaps it was because he was afraid that they would turn on him and want to kill him in the back?

I think the biggest detail you missed was what happened after that moment because shadow company was far more brutal and hostile than El Sin Nombres cartel. They were just straight up executing police and cartel affiliated suspects all under Graves command so not only was he a traitor and was the one actually playing all sides, but he was a hypocrite and was literally no better than his enemy.

Graves was just doing his job at the end of the day, theres no other way to look around, he is the leader of a mercenaries group and he deals with this often so it wasn’t surprising that he tricked 141 with the tank boss
The only time Graves directly tells his men to kill Soap or Ghost is after they ran around Las Almas killing SC soldiers and saw SC committing war crimes.
At that point - it was within his best interest to eliminate them.
I don't think Graves wanted to be any of their enemy.
This is supported by the next game where he appeared genuinely hurt Gaz didn't greet him.
He was EXCITED to see Alex, Farah and 141.

I love Graves so much, more than a guy probably should, interesting theory. Even though I’ve never thought of this scene that way, as probably a thousand people already said, he’s a PMC, he’s also the contractor/de facto leader of the Shadows, so I don’t see him really as an evil person mainly because his job isn’t supposed to be evil in the slightest. I love mercenaries so reMW2 and reMW3 has been one of the only fun recent cod titles for me. Honestly if I was n his shoes I probably wouldn’t have opened easily to a person I considered to have vague goals and relations.
Say what you want but the Shadow Company has the heaviest drips.
Also the Ghosts (TF141 and Los Vaquieros) vs Shadows has a nice metaphorical ring on it.
I know CoD has never really been about total logic or reasoning, but in the original trilogy, Shadow Company were mercs hired by General Shepherd - nothing more. In MWII - '22, they decided to give them personality and agency. Where I got completely lost and confused was the betrayal itself. For starters, a U.S. PMC would never be allowed to just take over a Mexican military installation - cartel involvement be damned - and would themselves be disavowed. Graves' betrayal being at the hands of General Shepherds orders was expected as someone who remembered and understood the original trilogy's story as they were loyal to General Shepherd and nothing more. I do like the characterization they gave Graves, however the whole situation doesn't make much sense let alone Shadow Company's absolute batshit insane rampage that follows. Again, no PMC would be allowed to just waltz around Mexico just executing people like that. I feel like the writers really wanted Graves to be one of the good guys but really fumbled hard in just executing that. It would have been more interesting and engaging to see Graves and some of his men choose loyalty over duty and fight among themselves to help Task Force 141. I have other issues with MWII - '22's campaign, but I did enjoy both Graves' and Alejandro's character.
