The beginning was so boring I switched off
I only tuned into this to see him talk about The Replacements. After the Beach Boys, best American band ever.
@@zootsoot2006 Loved The Replacements. And after them, my favorites include The Pixies, Cake, and Spoon. Full disclosure, I checked out this video to see if he mentioned Mary My Hope, who are probably completely unknown if you're not from Atlanta, but since Rick has been in Atlanta a long time I thought he might have known them. They came on the scene at the same time as The Black Crowes and Drivin' 'n' Cryin'. Back then there was no way to predict The Black Crowes would make it big, DNC would only have modest success, and MMM would go absolutely nowhere.
@@zootsoot2006 truth
Being in a band ain't easy. Some of these bands that never "made it" would be considered HUGE SUCCESS stories for some of us who busted our tails in music for years and years and never even got close to a record deal. Success as a musician is tough to define, especially these days. Ultimately, success may just mean continuing to be able to play, whether it's for a small or large audience. Don't give up.
The greatest that never made it was: Rick Beato's *"AIR DRUMMING"* techniques in his videos! đŻ% . . . âđœ â ïž đđœ đđœ
I once heard it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n roll...
The abilty to have 3-5 guys in a rehearsal room enough to get good enough to really make it is a miracle in itself.
Solo is the way to go. If you can sing, donât waste your time with bands.
@@godfreydaniel6278thatâs, âto the shop if you want a sausage rollâŠâ
Think we shall forever remain a demo tape. Started in 1997... it's fate lol
Rick, wouldn't it be cool if you resurrected these songs in a compilation album/playlist! You could call it "Off the Beato Track". Just a thought.đ
I love that
Great idea đĄ
Love the idea! What about copyright (just asking)?
awesome idea! too bad, I bet a lot of these guys broke up or possibly don't even make music anymore. I'm all for it though!
Great idea!!!
Big Wreck - the solo in Overemphasizing is AMAZING. Please do yourself a favor and listen to it. You will not be disappointed
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk is a perfect album. They should have been HUGE.
Thank you. I'd never heard these guys and was just thrilledâ€
I'll return the favor; Stuffy and His Frozen Parachute Band
Agreed--amazing band
Jellyfish was awesome! Bellybutton AND Spilt Milk are great albums!
First band that came through my mind when i read the title 1minute ago!
I think that image they cultivated wasn't cool in the eyes of that demographic that fuels which bands "make it." They weren't hair metal and weren't grunge. Great music, weird aesthetic.
I can't believe more people are not commenting about this, but what's most apparent to me is how great Rick was at producing. These tracks sound amazing.
Might also have been a downside. I wonder if occasionally a bit underproduction would have given things more of an edge.
@@Schmidtelpunkt This. And "loudness war" too for me.
Seriously, these are produced really well. Takes a lot of knowledge and technique, not to mention having the right gear and being able to wrangle the musicians.
His ear is fantastic.
Great to hear you talk about Flickerstick. Theyâre back and reunited last year at House of Blues in Dallas. They also did a tour with the Toadies last December. Would be great to see a video with you interviewing Flickerstick talking about you recording them
I saw Wishbone Ash last week. They took guitar harmonies to another level. One of the best shows I ever saw circa 1972 was Wishbone Ash and Quicksilver Messenger Service.
They had a lot of sucess Wishbone Ash.
We've seen W.A. twice recently Sellersville Theater. Absolute great musicians + entertainers. Bravođ
Big Country is considered a one hit wonder, but Stuart Adamson (RIP) and that band were amazing. Literally 40-50 good songs.
Agreed! Fields of FireâŠthe SeerâŠLook AwayâŠtheir back catalog is great.
@@jasonlady9535 Don't forget "Flame of the West". That song is just massive.
I did live sound for Big Country, alongside Nigel Luby. Fabulous band and the Scottish fans were unreal. Also worked with It Bites and Talk Talk. All should have been massive.
Never quite got how Mike & the Mechanics cracked it.
@@David-jb6ev Talk Talk...Mark Hollis was a genius. I flew from the States to go to his memorial concert in London.
Fields of Fire
The Jayhawks from Minnesota. Still out there touring. SO UNDERRATED!
I agree⊠great band.
Havenât watched yet but Big Star has to be on here. #1 Record is legendary
yes! Big Star, definitely overlooked and the record label screwed up with promotion
Great shout. Great record.
Masters of Reality (Chris Goss ); Hothouse Flowers; Maggieâs Dream; Big Sugar; The Grapes of Wrath
I know it's not exactly in this category but I always wondered why UFO never made it to be one of the "biggest" rock bands of all time, even bands from their era (and beyond) recognize them as such but they are not really well known, probably just their song doctor doctor and that's it. They haven such an amazing discography and some pretty good songs overall, one of my favorite bands.
I absolutely agree! What an incredible rock band that most have never heard of for one reason or another, especially since Michael Schenker was their guitarist for some time. UFO really had such powerful & beautifully written music and lyrics. A great listen indeed! đ đ€
First concert I ever saw was UFO and Robin Trower, in Lodi of all places.
They are
Absolutely! Love UFO! "Strangers in the Night" is an incredibly powerful album. Michael Schenker just kills it on guitar during this classic live date. Also, the Paul Chapman era is severely under-rated, especially the 1981 album "The Wild, the Willing, and the Innocent".
@dougcarson5202 Totally agree! Paul Chapman was a beast on guitar. You're right on point with Paul being underrated. Great guitarist with a very tasty style & stage presence .R.I.P. Paul Chapman đžđžđ¶
I'm always surprised how few people really know the music of The The... consistently amazing writing over decades.
7:14 Flickerstick were really cool. I remember sitting in a mates house and him saying to me that they were going to go far.
Fates Warning! Great prog band with great vocals, top notch musicianship who have inspired many a great band, including Dream Theater. They've been at it for 40 years and have never really made it big. Kudos to them for making it this far, regardless of record sales. Love those guys....
Fates Warning oh my. Great example. Great prog band. I remember buying Awaken the Guardian back in 86.Cheers.
They do have a dedicated following, though, and many metalheads have at least heard of them. "Awaken The Guardian" spent many years in the readers' all-time favorites list of the German magazine Rock Hard. One of my favorite bands ever!
Mark Zonder is one of my favorite drummersâŠvery underrated as well.
Fates is an amazing band, still! Love their music.
@@ericrincon545 certainly! Their last 3 records have been awesome, especially Theories of Flight.
Saga. Best progressive band out of Canada after Rush. Criminally underrated.
Did Rik Emmet play in Saga?
@@lisazinn866 He played in TRIUMPH.
One "hit" Wonder with "On The Loose".
I think they were huge in Europe.
@@jamiebell2164I think Wind it Up, same album in 1981ish got airplay - at least in upstate NY. Saw them open for Jethro Tull in Rochester. Maybe Beato was there too.
Hey Rick!
You should make a deal with those artists where you make their songs available for download through your channel!đ
Just a thoughtđ
Absolutely CANNOT WAIT for the Ian Thornley video! Heâs one of those rare artists that continues to improve as the duration of his career progresses. Unreal.
Ian Thornley is an absolute LEGEND!!!! Amazing voice and in my opinion THE BEST guitarist out there right nowâŠ
Did he say he's connected with Ian finally!!!!??
Ian Thornley is a triple threat. Incredible guitar player, great vocals, and killer songwriter. Biggest guitar sound ever. He has that huge sound live as well, itâs not just a production thing.
@@betbuk yep, said he had Ian in, and a video is coming soon. đ
I keep saying heâd be a great soundgarden singer if they ever decided to tour again.
90s band that didnât make it huge. They had some notable quasi hits, but theyâre severely underrated. Concrete Blonde. Johnette is an amazing vocalist too.
I effing loved Concrete Blonde and Johnette's solo material as well!
Unfortunately, I think what stymied CB from reaching meteoric success was Johnette's gender and the fact that she's a bassist. While there are female-fronted bands that have become successful, they are few and far between, and most of them were only short-term successful and very few achieved sustained success. The same can also be said for bassist-led bands. For every Thin Lizzy, Rush, Primus, etc., there's a million others that go nowhere
đŻđŻđŻđ€đ»such a phenomenal band
Both agree that they didn't make it "huge", but disagree that their hits were in any way "quasi". One Hot-100 top 20 track and six US Alternative Airplay top 20 singles is a pretty decent track record (especially in the '90s when "alt" was a big thing). I think Johnette is one of the greatest female rock lead vocalists of all time. First heard them on the soundtrack for The Hidden but didn't really get into them until Bloodletting.
@@snowdenwyatt6276 Yeah. Iâm just talking about âhitsâ as in people knowing about them. Like Joey. Itâs known but not well. Thatâs what I mean. Now charts are different.
@@shruggzdastr8-facedclown Theyâre amazing. And I am guilty of not getting into them until the last decade. In the 90s I knew of them, but only like the big songs like Joey. Thereâs SO much more. I think Suicide Note was what got me really digging into her and them more.
Youâre right. Linda Perry is a great example. It took a LONG time before her genius was known through songwriting for others. Her solo album In Flight after 4 Non Blondes is phenomenal. No one knows about it.
XTC certainly had some decent success but given the overall quality of their catalog they should have been much bigger.
Probably because the main man Andy Partridge would not play live anymore as it was screwing his mental health up so badly.
@@williamross2579 Agreed...and they were so incredible live in the early 80s up to the valium/mental health breakdown.
They were even better as Dukes of Stratosphere... Jellyfish should have been massive.
Once you have a glowing documentary made about you, you don't qualify.
Last month while on the Adriatic coast of Italy I was in a pub listening to a T Rex playlist being played by the 17 year old barman (who was also a musician). The next time I went visited I told the young barmaid who was serving that since he liked T Rex he would probably also like Slade - and being a musician maybe XTC as well. She told me that he knew who XTC were and that she herself loved their 'Nigel' song. I was surprised that 2 kids from another country born decades after XTC did their last live gig even knew who XTC were. Such is the power of the Internet that bands that never made it are being rediscovered by new generations.
I love kings X and all my musician friends love Kings X. They are one of my top 3 bands ever I just think they are a musicians type band just never caught on main stream.
Ty Tabor Is a monsterâ€
Agreed, KIngs X is amazing!
F*cking King's X. Ruined by their incorrect association with being a 'christian rock band', ugh!! I remember putting on FaithHopeLove on the stereo at a party I'd been invited to in Boulder Co., I was the 'old man' in this house full of 18-20 year olds, I was in my early 30's.
The host of the party said, "whoa, who's this?"
'King's X. A power trio outta Texas' I reply.
He immediately makes a sour 'oh, you silly old fool' face and pulls my CD out and quickly hands it back to me saying "Oh HELL no!! We don't play no relegious music here dude!"
Heh heh, I totally got the last laugh. He missed out on some of the best hard rock ever written, and amazing harmonies. Punk.
Ty Tabor plays his solo's live in the studio without practicing or pre-arranging, in the hopes of catching that first time 'fire', which he does in spades. Im 60yo, and a huge music fan and lifelong guitar player and only Ty and Randy Rhoades play solo's so amazing that I couldn't wait to hear each songs solo. Not even my goto biggest influences old progressive Rush and Triumph did I do this, despite how good their solos are, Ty and Randy's solos are songs in themselves. Check out the solo on 'Flies and Black Skies' or 'The Big Picture' or the mind blowingly aggressive 'MoanJam', for validation. :)
@@davemay1628 I had this same sort of thing happen to me lol. Guy said he doesn't listen to Christian bands. I was like....what? Lol
Agree with the Kings X comments. Didnât make it huge but were the tightest three piece youâll find since Rush and Triumph.
Loved them in the late 80s / early 90s
This may sound weird , but 'King's X' reminds me of a modern day 'Kansas' meets 'The Beatles' and yep , they're a three piece -- especially live!!
I tried to like Kings X. I saw them in a local pub here in Rhode Island, and I bought one of their CDs on the table. I listened to it a few times and just couldn't get into it at all. And now that I'm older and dislike harder music more and more, I doubt I'd be into them today if I gave it another shot. I just didn't get the attraction other than it's a trio, with a black guy playing guitar, sounding slightly like Jimi, and pulling audio stunts like The Beatles.
Loved Triumph!!!!!
they kicked ASS
Zebra is one band that was so underrated. Randy Jackson amazing vocals and guitar player.
Growing up in L.I. N.Y. I know of Zebra very well. They played all the clubs in the New York area and Randy was from Louisiana so they were pretty big in the New Orleans and Florida. A friend of mine was there stage manager and was actually in the Who's Behind the Door video. Before they made an album they did great Zeppelin covers and Beatles. The first two albums were very good the third well not so. Basically wrong band for the times. It was post punk and glam metal and Zebra did not fit in.
@@frankperricone2065 The good old days. Hanging out at Speaks,My fathers place. Etc. Great times.
@@forbo327 Hammer Heads, The Boardy Barn and you remember Speaks there is a band that was signed to Zeppelin's Swan Song label that used to do a Song advertising Speaks, the band Detective. Yup, those were the days.
I remember seeing Zebra open for Cheap Trick in Berkely, CA back in the 80's. It was a long time ago but I remember being fairly blown away.
I'll take the Arrows and their original version of I love rock and roll way way way before Joan Jetts half decent copy.
The Japanese Punk-Pop band from Osaka Japan, Shonen Knife deserves a much bigger audience!! They are 3 females who have been going strong since 1981 and their catalog is fantastic! Check out Black Bass, Top of the World, Twist Barbie, Banana Chips, I am a cat, Riding on the Rocket, and so many more great tunes!
My favorite is probably Gomi Day. I relate to that song all too well... Saw them live once in Sacramento - great show! They also have amazing cover songs like Daydream Believer and Top of the World.
Shonen Knife are kind of a novelty act, singing intentionally out of tune and playing quite simply. Check out Judy And Mary, who were a phenomenal band of musicians -and vocalist Yuki had an incredibly powerful but unique voice.
Your want to hear one of the best import Japanese rock bands, check out my boys 'EZ-O' (I think I'm spelling that correctly!), they were better than Loudness IMHO. They were so good, Gene Simmons of Kiss fame chose them as his first band to produce after Kiss went on hiatus. The breakout hit was this awesome metal song 'House of !000 Pleasures', check it out.
I'm excited to watch the Ian Thornley interview you mentioned you will be posting. Big Wreck is great! Ian writes good songs, and his playing is phenomenal.
Big Wreck is a hugely underrated band, and Thornley is one of the best guitarists out there today.
Came here to make sure big wreck is mentioned here
Ian Thornley and Big Wreck are swesome.
DRIVIN N CRYIN OUT OF ATLANTA, they kinda made it but didnt. Now only seem to tour in south east us.
I think there'd be a place for a stream of these cool commercial rejects if it was curated by someone with good taste like Rick. I'd tune in to something like that for sure.
When I was a kid we had a family friend that worked at a local radio station. We got boxes of 45âs of bands/songs that didnât quite make it. A lot of the songs were really good, but the bands just didnât quite make it in an era where there were a lot of good bands.
because the bands didnt make it... no one has heard of them . they hold little interest
@@namegoeshere5898 The whole point of the stream would be to discover new things. I think it's a great idea.
Sounds like a good business model to compete with Spotify, but for people who are tired of the corporate machine chosing which music they csn have access to.
@@namegoeshere5898 thats a catch 22 - if you only like the music you've heard, which is only what the music industry accountants have chosen for you, then you will only like the music someone else decided you should hear. Rinse and repeat, or otherwise seek out what you are missing.
The Charlie Mars record you did is the reason we recorded our 1st record with you. Not recording our 2nd record with you is why I left. Had I known Shinedown was going to record their next record with you, I would've probably joined them.
You're one of the best ever Rick!
The greatest that never made it was: Rick Beato's *"AIR DRUMMING"* techniques in his videos! đŻ% . . . âđœ â ïž đđœ đđœ
Dada.
Criminal how that band never took off, three incredible musicians whoâve consistently made good music for over 30 years.
Yeah, man! Dada was a GREAT band!! âThe Ballad of Earl Grey and Chanomilleâ is my favorite of their many excellent tunes! âNo oneâ is another excellent one. Those harmonies! The lyrics! What a fantastic band! âDimâ?? Come on, man. That band is so good!
Bob the Drummer
^^^^^ this.
Totally. I commented the same. I think it was timing. They hit when audiences wanted grunge not high polish production.
Agreed
The Odds, a great Canadian band popular in the Detroit metro area
Love Flickerstick. A couple that deserve more attention, The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy- criminally underrated, and Big Country - should have been huge
They needed a different band name. Flicker Stick is a horrible band name.
Swervedriver, from Oxfordshire. Got signed, got record deals , experimented some success, but bot much. Raise and Mescal Head are Divine, style defining, pure excellence albums. They deserved a hell of a lot more success than what they got.
They were pretty big.
a definitive band of the 90s in terms of their sound, label issues and getting lumped in with the doomed first wave of shoegaze screwed them
Eleven, the band of Alain Johannes, Natasha Shneider ( RIP) and Jack Irons. They were amazingly talented and hard to label in a genre. Altough they were respected and toured with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Queens Of The Stone Age, they weren't recognized for the public. Alain , and Natasha,on the other hand were successful collaborating, composing and playing with Chris Cornell, Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, etc . Their curriculum, mostly Alain is quite impressive.
YES. My absolute favorite band that nobody else I know has ever heard
I saw them open for Sound Garden at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in 94 or 95. Awesome show and I immediately bought their CD.
There's nothing like hearing a scout from a major record label saying, "You guys would be on the charts if I saw this show a year ago."
Angel was a band in the 70âs who put out some good albums but never had mainstream success. Greg Guiffria was a very talented keyboardist from the band who had some moderate success in the 80âs.
People still remember them all these years later so even though they never had a Gold album they are legendary
Didn't Paul Stanley discover them and / or produce their debut album?
@davidl570 No Gene and Bill Aucoin discovered them. Paul didn't want Gene and Bill involved in other bands. He was in fact the main reason Bill didn't sign Van Halen
I was a sound tech for a band called The Godz , (gotta keep a running) can be found on my youtube , incredible lead guitar player, one of the best I have ever heard shred live, anyway they were set to go on tour with Angle, and we did several practice sessions on a mock stage set, down in south Columbus Ohio, Angle was incredible, the Godz were struck with disaster just before the tour was to kick off, one was killed another hurt badly in a dune buggy accident , .. sorry to rant but I haven't saw anyone mention Angle sense then
@@PsychobabbleRapp that's cool. I have a Godz album, no one mentions them anymore either
Gentle Giant and Mother's Finest were two great bands from the 70's that should've been much bigger in a fair world. Both were amazing.
Iron Age is my jam.
MF is still playing, Iâm sure youâre aware, around the South and in Europe.
Yeah, I saw some recent video. They should have been bigger. They were too Rock for the R&B stations and too R&B for the Rock stations but a dynamite band nonetheless.
Big Gentle Giant fan here but I never heard of MF. I will have to investigate.
@@mikereiss4216 They're a hard rock band with a female soul singer ala Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin. They have a version of "Burnin' Love" that'll blow your doors off.
Shooting Star was woefully underrated. Such good midwestern rock and roll.
You are sooo right!
Flickerstick is a great band and I always felt like they deserved to get much more recognition! Thereâs so much gold on the Welcoming Home the Astronauts album. âCokeâ and âBeautifulâ are two tracks that immediately spring to mind đ
Strobelight · Something Left After Misfortune has only 610 views on YT. Let's change it, guys! Great song! Tahnks for sharing, Rick!
Sloan is a Canadian band that is great and very successful-in Canada. Most Americans have no clue who Sloan is. Theyâre very Beatles-esque and one of the best rock bands of the last 20 years.
Seconded. Sloan deserves to be huge.
They used to play Sloan on 89X, a Canadian radio station that reached Detroit back in the 90's.
I'm Aussie and listen to Sloan but I don't know anyone else that knows them here
100% agree. So many solid tunes in the Sloan catalogue. One of many Canadian bands that never broke through internationally. Tragically Hip probably the best example.
Better band IMHO was the SUPERFRIENDZ
Failure is the first band that comes to mind
Grant Lee Buffalo are one band that should have been huge imo
1.) Jellyfish and 2.) Jump, Little Children from Charleston, SC (who were fortunate to work with you, Sir Beato) 3.) Guster (who is still touring)!!
Taste! and Rory Gallagher's solo career! RIP legend
Jellyfish could have been HUGEâŠlove their two albums, BellyButton and Spilt Milk.
Love everything that Manning has done, plus him, Dover, and Smith with Lickerish Quartet! The TV was on Ben10 this morning, saw Sturmerâs name for the theme song.
The other major 2 album moment Of My Youth !!
Bellybutton is incredible but Spilt Milk is literally one of the greatest albums ever made IMHO
â@@KhalDrogo76Perhaps the album was just too good to follow up.
Agreed I loved both of these albums back when they were released.
I always thought Riot would have been huge. I saw them opening up for Rush in â81 and thought this was going to be the next great band.
"The Restless Breed" is a great song that I totally identify with.
I lived in the same neighborhood with the guys in Riot when we were teenagers and right after high school, we used to all hang together, this was when Larry DiMarzio started his pickup company, we all were installing the super distortion humbuckers in our Les Pauls. Mark had a black Les Paul custom that he played thru a 50 watt Marshall with the big 8-10 cabinet. He was a huge Ronnie Montrose fan like all of us. Thereâs a few good articles about their history and why they never broke real big.
RIOT was awesome, I have the live EP which is fantastic.
Moby Grape is probably the most famous story of a rock band that never made it but should've, through no fault of their own, due to crazy overpromotion. The B'zz is another mind-boggling story, despite having the most exciting debut album in years & big push by Epic Records, "Get Up" was an instant classic when I heard it, IMO!
Shooting Star was a very good Midwest rock band. Highly underrated. Just couldnât get a Top 40 hit single. By the way, their 1989 greatest hits CD âThe Best of Shooting Starâ was the first album to hit the Billboard charts without being available on vinyl LP. I love their music.
I remember Bands on the Run. I loved the concept. Wished VH1 couldâve continued to do it.
I grew up listening to Shooting Star (Iâm from Kansas City). Those guys were extremely talented and kicked ass! Itâs too bad that more people in the world didnât get to experience Shooting Star!
I remember seeing Shooting Star open for Robin Trower in 1980. They were a band that certainly could have gone on to bigger things had the "stars" aligned...
I agree! I grew up in the Chicagoland area back in the 70's- 80"s, and Shooting Star was THE band! I saw them at Six Flags in Gurnee Illinois on Grad night 1981, (I believe that THE MICHAEL Stanley band warmed them up) and oh what a sight and sound to behold! Amazing musicianship and stage presence! I have loved them ever since! I had the privilege of warming them up with my band in the 90's, and I have to say, what a gracious, humble and extremely talented bunch of guys they are! Van was the coolest dude ever, as well as the rest of the group! Great experience in my meager lifetime!
I have to think about Savatage in this regard. They were forced to do an AOR album by their label, which hurt a lot of their early momentum. The death of Criss Oliva pretty much ended them as a band. Damn shame, because they were an early innovator in symphonic/power metal. The Oliva brothers were something else, manâŠ
Savatage is absolutely amazing.. Streets is a phenomenal Album.. Hell, all of them are.
I was scrolling the comments just to see if anyone would mention them. One of my favorite bands of all time, but simultaneously one of the most underrated and under appreciated bands ever. Most people who go see TSO live probably have no idea who savatage was
They made up for Savatage in forming the Trans Siberian Orchestra which is pretty successful in my opinion.
They have reunited, and making a new album with tour!
Savatage is one of my favorites. Jon Oliva finally got paid because of tso so good for him
Badlands was an incredible band formed by Jake E Lee after Ozzy dropped him. Blues based hard rock. They put out three albums and you can find bootlegs of live shows on the internet. They came out in the midst of hair metal but were not that. Think a throwback to 70's hard rock with blues. If Humble Pie, Zeppelin and Free has a baby. Incredible band.
They were cancelled in late 80's. Their singer gave ADIS to multiple women
Ray Gillen voice is incredible
Thier 1st album went Gold, so I would consider that making it
@@JoinMeInDeathBaby That's been proven to be bullshit...
Yeah, strange story about Ray Gillen. Atlantic completely cancelled them after all that business. Their debut was re-issued briefly by Rock Candy records before Atlantic shut it down again. I think the families of the women Ray was involved with complained. All a bit tragic really. But they were a great band for sure.
I see people commenting about Kingâs X and I thought that myself, but I guess it really depends on what you mean by âmade itâ because although they never had top 20 hits, theyâve attained a level of legendary status, and to this day play extremely popular live shows around the world after 40+ years to really be considered successful in their own way. Iâd say they made it in the sense that theyâre legendary and people still know who the hell they are. Thatâs my take on them anyway.
Agreed.
Agreed. Still playing and making a living 40 years later. Saw someone wearing a Kings X t-shirt the other day.
Pretty sure Gretchen Goes to Nebraska went Gold so that woukd kind of remove them from the conversation
Good call, although Gretchen and Faith Hope Love did pretty well here in the UK
Company of Thieves, The Hush Sound, Thrice. Three solid bands that deserved so much more recognition.
I did see Company of Thieves good band they split up shortly after I saw them.
Jellyfish is top of the list for me. Spilt Milk is one of the greatest albums Iâve ever heard.
Such a masterpiece. I love how they said that for years it was used to balance things at recording studios because it was so complex. That band collapsed under the weight of their own brilliance.
Totally agree with JellyFish as well. Grapes Of Wrath from Canada as well.
I saw the title and immediately thought "Jellyfish".
Jellyfish sold nearly 500k copies of their two albums and had 4 singles chart on Billboard. If thats not making it, then bands like Coheed and Cambria havent made it either...
Both albums are incredible
The Call. A 80s/90s band with a little popular success but not anywhere near as much as they deserved. I saw them live around 86 at a music festival in Saint Paul MN. They were at a side stage with maybe 50 people at the start but by the end there were hundreds. The greatest concert I have ever attended in my life. Still in my top 5 list of greatest bands ever. If you are over 40 you may have heard their song "Let the Day Begin" which was a minor radio hit and used by Al Gore during his presidential campaign.
I Still Believe in The Call.
Yep a great band indeed. I got to see them at the Fine Line and I was on the floor 5 feet from the band! Michael Been had such a great voice.
I was fortunate to see them in the early 80s. Michael Been owned the stage like no one I've seen before or since.
"The Walls Came Down"
I long for them to get covered on this channel or professor of rock, or airplay on â1st waveâ on sxm radio.
My all time favorite band.
Not sure if itâs going to turn up this great band, but Kings X.
They are the first grunge band ever, and one of my favs.
I wouldn't say they were a grunge band however they were way ahead of their time and the world wasn't ready for them. Interestingly, the bass player for Pearl Jam loves them. I am a massive Kings X fan and it is sad they never really reached the level they should have. Love that band much.
These tunings were definitely before grunge
Who is Kings X?
@MarauderVZ02 and they influenced Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam *very* directly.
I always thought Galactic Cowboys deserved a lot more attention than they got - I loved that band
They were fun, but never commercially viable for main stream.. also like the Awful Truth.
@Grring yes! Space in your face :)
Amazing band
Itâs so much fun revisiting these bands! I remember a lot of them from way back. The Atlanta scene in the late 90âs through the early 00âs was phenomenal!!! We listened to local bands more than the radio!
Big Country should have been huge! Stuart Adamson is criminally underrated!
agreed
Enough with the "criminally under-rated" references already, shheesh
Love Big Country. Good call
I remember them coming on The Tonight Show in the early 90âs, I thought they had broken up at the time. They were so good on it that I went out and bought The Buffalo Skinners album they had just released. What a solid album it was. The One I Love, Alone and Weâre not in Kansas were standouts, think it got lost in the grunge movement and the album came and went.
Toy Matinee and Jellyfish are two bands that come to mind. MASSIVELY talented & should have gotten more recognition than they did.
I came to say these two and King's X. So you pretty much nailed it.
Jellyfish for sure!!!
Yes definitely Toy Matinee and Kevin Gilbert as an artist.
Jellyfish or Jason Faulkner
Donât forget Imperial Drag!
The Producers out of Atlanta were awesome!
Jellyfish was an unknown legendary that I had the opportunity to run lights for when they played at the Cadillac Club in Fresno, Ca back in 1993. Fabulous and talented musicians.
The "Lizard Queen" ad before this video is SICK. John Navarro's playing is spectacular.
I'm so excited about Ian Thornley interview. Big Wreck is on top of my list, however you cannot say they didn't make it. They have their faithful audience in Canada. They should be huge thought. Thornley can do it all, great voice, guitar skills out of this earth, great composer, arranger, fantastic lyrics...
Ian is a genious. Go listen this linkâŠ
Was fortunate to see them play with Edgewater, lo-pro and three days grace
Love Thornley and BW!!
@@WhiteAsBloodCO Nice concert! Really love Lo-Pro lead singer (and Ultraspank as well), Pete Murray's, voice. Also, Edgewater had a couple of good songs as well.
I love this channel. I bought the Beato Book and never used it. I did it just to support Rick.
The Tragically Hip and Drivin n Cryin. Totally underrated except in Canada and South East US.
The Michael Stanley Band (MSB) had a top 40 song or two and several in the top 100, but they never got the national attention that they deserved. Great stuff!
Lived in central Ohio and heard these guys out of Cleveland, recorded live.Midwest Midnight was a great song.
As a CleveO native from the 80's, you are correct! They used to sell out Blossom Music Center -18k people, 4 nights in a row
They probably wouldâve done better with a proper band nameđ€·đ»ââïž
such a great band
So true. Cleveland native. Graduated in '83 when they reached their peak. Couldn't go a day without hearing them. RIP Michael.
Dear Rick, thank you for taking the time to talk about this subject, as I feel itâs not discussed enough out there in the music community. Out of college, I had an internship at a top record label, (which Iâm choosing not to add here). Within the A&R department that I worked, existed a deep drawer full of all these band projects and packages, bios, press kits, etc., that just sat there, unopened, and unlistened, forever. It wasnât uncommon for one of the group heads to go into the drawer to take an ADAT, (now that dates me), or cassette tape, and intentionally blank it, so they could make a copy of the artist they were trying to pedal in the press, (Rolling Stone, Village, Stepping Out, etc.), that week. So all the press kits went unanswered, and never listened. To me, the most valuable takeaway I learned from the internship was âitâs not knowing who, itâs knowing whenââŠ. I believe this practice is still supported by all the labels to this day. Either way, thank you for continuing to support the recording artists you were part of, as it meant a lot to them then, as much as it does today. Sincerely, Tom D.
We played with Flickerstick at Hard Rock Live in Orlando around 2001. They were great live and super cool dudes and can drink like champs!
Rick,
You weren't kidding. Great tunes. You should put together a compilation of these bands for release.
Absolutely THRILLED to hear you doing something with Ian Thornley and Big Wreck! CRIMINALLY underrated and under known band.
The Dream Syndicate, the perfect post punk band IMHO.
Speaking of "Dream" bands.........................another one that comes to mind is The Dream Academy. Only two-hit wonders over here. Should of been bigger!
The Producers! Great tunes, look, and sound, but never made it over the hump. From Atlanta too
Big Wreck/Ian Thornley; looking forward to that interview! I've been a big fan since ILMO. Always wondered why they were never a bigger hit, but probably just another case of wrong country, wrong time.
Mutemath is a grossly underrated band. Amazing songs and production. I'll never understand how they weren't bigger
I watched them perform and they were awesome!
@@NakulKrishna I saw them live in 2015. They were known for amazing live shows and they did not disappoint!
Agree! Amazing live band.
Before watching I'm going to say The Replacements.
Fantastic - Flickerstick is an amazing, unique band. Brandin & Coryâs songwriting is phenomenal.
Flickerstick from dallas-ft worth. I liked that show they were on, on VH1. The only other band I remember on the show was a girl group called Harlow.
They are still around with a slightly different line up. And the original band did a 20th Anniversary concert last year to celebrate their album WHTA. Was the best two shows I ever been to!!!
@@tracylevy2339 youâre damn right theyâre still around. I was at the House of Blues Dallas on June 24, 2022 for their show.
Rick, I'd really like you to interview each of the Lead Singers and Guitar players of these bands you produced. Maybe put out a compilation Vinyl album on Beato Records...
Can't wait to hear Ian's interview. Unbelievable talent. BW's second album, The Pleasure and the Greed, is still a "desert island disc" for me.
T-Ride.A phenomenal band that was critically acclaimed but didn't make it big due to bad timing ( the shift to grunge).Unbelievable musicianship & talent.
My uncle played cow bell on their first record đ€©
T-Ride were fantastic!
I remember T-ride
The guitar player was a student of Satriani
and the drummer is great music producer
They 'made it' but not as big, in my opinion, as they should have. Who??
Kings X
One of my favorite bands! Kingâs X definitely never made it as big as they should have.
Kingâs X is the best band no one knows about. Period. Secondly, Badlands with Ray Gillen and Jake E Lee was phenomenal. Ray was the best rock vocalist of his generation and it wasnât even close
I have one of their CDs
I was just listening to Badlands not long ago. Sooo took me back to when I owned the cassette.
The good thing is that they did not pop up out of nowhere and then just disappear. They made a crapload of good albums.
Agree with both hands down.đ„đ„đ„
Saw Kings X a bunch of times and hung out with all of them, theyâre amazing musicians and amazing people. Saw Badlands with Ray at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ for the original album donât know if the second album was out yet I donât think so. Stood right in front of Jake, he handed me a pick.đđŒ
funny thing about King's X is, that if you ask any musician, they'll all tell you they love the band...... and yet, the fanbase never really grew that big
Would love to hear Ricks views on Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Paw and Fastball
BTE puts on a great show and Kevin is down to earth. I would very much enjoy opening for BTE.
Would love to hear more about the work you did with Flickerstick--one of my favorite bands, and for such a long time, there was just so little out there about them.
From the 70's....Be Bop Deluxe.
Rick, I'd love to see you review Bill Nelson's guitar work, their live album is really special. They semi-made it, but never got the recognition that so many other bands got. Bill Nelson's an absolute genius on the guitar.
Yes! Bill Nelson's output of music is staggering too considering the sheer volume of material.
Thank God for Sirius's Deep Tracks channel---became a Be Bop fan as a result!
Alcatrazz and Badlands among the many bands that signed with major lables that should've had been more successful but for lable support and changing tastes.
During the 80âs I was into this Australian band called âLime Spidersâ and so many people didnât and still havenât heard them. They had two albums I still listen to - âThe cave comes aliveâ and âVolatileâ
Do you have any thing on the Easybeats. Their from the 1960s. From Australia. They had a lot of great music. They have Stevie wright as the group's lead singer. They did a song called Friday on my mind. Stevie wright sang a song called Evie they are three parts to it.â€â€. I hope you do. And that I hear from you.â€â€â€đąđą
Head Cleaner was EPIC!!
Out Of Control and Beyond The Fringe and Slave Girl.
Unfortunately, the album was not properly produced. At all.
King's X should be in the HOF
Big Wreck is also amazing.
"We had a chance, but it didn't work out...." A story of most of our lives. But you had one thing only one person in a hundred had: And that is a CHANCE to change the world with your music. You may not have fulfilled that chance, but you lived your life to the fullest every minute. And made possible being here, to enrich the lives of hundreds of thousands with your experience. Thank you, and please keep it up, bro.
I would say Dokken. They are a big what if. Yes they did have success. But after Back for the Attack album, they were in contract negotiation and if that deal went thru they wouldâve been set for life. But Don Dokken and George Lynch were not having a great relationship at the time. You should do a Dokken song breakdown.
I still love Flickerstick. Great debut album. Follow up was great too.
I loved Flickerstick ... Miss those guys...no Idea why VH1 didn't do another season of bands on the run
Iâve been meaning to say this for sometime - you have the most sophisticated and informed listeners of any channel. I love reading the comments because Iâll bet most of your listeners are either audiophiles or musicians.
Finally a Flickerstick mention! I love that! And that they've been writing new material and touring!
Flickerstick kept going for quite a few years after 9/11. They reunited for two shows in Dallas a year ago and are now back together and touring again! My favorite band ever.
Recently saw video of Brandon doing a solo show and his voice is still incredible
@@damonke79 heâs incredible. Seeing them live again after all these years has been amazing.
So cool of you to mention Flickerstick! They had 2 shows with the original line up last year. Amazing live band.
Weren't they on a reality show?
@@supernothing77 Yes. They won the VH1 Bands on the Run competition. They released their major label debut in 2001. They seemed to have a lot of momentum, but things fizzled out within a few years.
@@TheOccultationProject I remember that show! I'll have to watch it again sometime
How can I watch the that show?
@@raymondlugo9960 I believe the whole series is on CZcams. The band has put all of their music on Spotify. Definitely worth a listen.
Perhaps Shooting Star? While they made it to the charts with their second album âHang On For Your Lifeâ, they fell off dramatically after that, for a variety of reasons. I still listen to them to this day, but always wonder: what if?
It's criminal that kings-x was never as big as the big bands like motley etc. There's not many bands that can hold up against them past, present.... and future. Their vocal harmonys are insane, as well the grooves they wrote. They can do heavy, light, etc. Some of their time signatures are just ridiculous, example being the end of we were born to be loved off the faith, hope & love album.
Rick, you should do a video about kings-x and showcase some of their stuff as i bet a lot of your younger viewers/subscribers have little to no knowledge of them.
I introduced my wife to King's X about a year ago. They're now one of her favorite bands. She wants to do a female-fronted King's X tribute band. I've already got the Hamer 12-string.
On the other side of the Pond Lloyd Cole and the Commotions should have been huge here in the States in the 80's! They were big in the UK! Lloyd now lives in Boston and plays a lot of âł Golf! Still makes great Music as far as I know!
