    The issue is that defense ammo works best at specific velocities, which is why most 10mm defensive loads move at .40 S&W speeds. The extra speed 10mm is capable of is best utilized in hard cast loads for bear defense, etc. Even so, I want all the performance from loads such as the Buffalo Bore in my 10mm as well. I don't care about overpenetration; I want maximum devastation on target. If I didn't, I wouldn't use a 10mm.

    Great test, Brian! Although I must admit to being very disappointed in Underwood on this one! They are usually right there at the top of the heap but on this one, not so much. I've heard rumors that if the Nosler bullet is pushed too hard it tends to shed the jacket so that is a possible reason for the lower velocity but even tho it worked ok, it wouldn't be my first choice! On the other hand, the Double Tap did ok and while probably snappy in my G29, I'm sure it would be pleasant in my G40 (so far nothing has been unpleasant to shoot out of the G40!). Funny thing is I've yet to see anyone have the Double Tap for sale on any of the numerous sites I've checked, with everyone showing it as out of stock. Bummer! Oh well, at keast we know what the goal is when it comes to 180 ammo! Thank you for all the hard work you put in to these tests, they really show us the way!

    I’ve never tried the double tap 10mm but in the past I’ve tried the 40sw and it’s amazing. The 180 grain double tap 40 is moving faster than the underwood 10mm. Out of my 5” mp the dt 40 was in the high 1100s. I honestly think post pandemic these companies are using almost any powder they can get to keep pumping out ammo. I really think that has something to do with the performance. Either way great video!

  • @snowdogthewolf
    @snowdogthewolf Před 7 měsíci +5

    I've been using Underwood for years, particularly their 357 Sig stuff. Early tests shown here on CZcams indicated they were loaded hotter than advertised, originally listed at 1450 fps with a 125gr projectile. The advertised velocity then changed to 1475 fps (with actual velocities often exceeding 1550 fps as experienced by Mrgunsngear and TNoutdoor9). 660 ft/lbs from a 4.5" 357 Sig ain't bad at all. For a while Underwood was considered one of the last remaining manufactures that offered ammunition that performed as advertised.
    I figured those qualities would carry over to other calibers, such as the 10mm.
    I purchased some 140gr (Xtreme Penetrators), 180gr and 200gr JHPs. To see such low velocities from a reputable company is disappointing.
    About a decade ago, it was Double Tap that was accused by many to be substantially inflating their numbers. Now it looks like Underwood has caught that bug while Double Tap has improved.
    I guess I'll just stick with my reloads and if I needed commercially-loaded fodder, Grizzly it is.

      @RealtyPro7 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@ToolsandTargets That’s why your tests are so important and revealing. The tests are standardized and you use the same gel and clothing and compare the ammo back to back. So if one round does well and another doesn’t on the same day, even temperature can’t be an excuse. Using the more common guns and barrel lengths represent real world performance as well. Sure someone could carry a 380 with a 4 or 5 inch barrel, but that’s not the norm. The LCP MAX is real world 380 carry size in most cases. And I’d agree on the G20 and G29 sizes because not as many people are going to EDC a G40 or other 6” barreled 10mm.
      Keep holding the 10mm and 380 to a standard that makes sense! If 10mm is going to be weak, might as well stick with 40 or 45+P. And why bother trusting your life to weak 380 when there are rounds that do make them more powerful. With those being the high and low for average popular carry calibers it’s good to point out when manufacturers fail to deliver a “proper” product. You said there is no excuse for it and that’s exactly it.
      It’s really disappointing that HST has fallen short on these two calibers. And they are so close on 10mm. Just a bump of 100-150 fps would probably make them the best performing 10mm JHP. If your subscriber number gets up there where it really should be, and subscribers actually email the companies, maybe they will start to listen to their customers and deliver better products?

It would probably feel similar to the Trex but can ride a little higher to print less and also be easier to put on and remove. It can also be altered to work IWB. I’d been waiting a while to see Brian’s @toolsandtargets testing on the UW Xtreme Defender with the newer coating and using the clothing. They performed exactly as expected and at 10mm power levels. The HST also had perfect performance but it’s an odd one because it’s under the minimum fps and ft lbs yet yields those results. I’d love to see Federal pump it up by 100-150 fps! My guess is we might see a few inches less penetration with more expansion. For now I still usually run the 200 grain UW XTP out of habit, with the UW XD or even hardcast in a backup mag. I’ve never really tested or used any of the HST or Hornady Critical Duty etc that I have saved in 10mm.
      Hoping to see some fresh tests on 45acp in HST regular and +P (my go to 45 ammo), UW XD, Liberty and maybe even UW hard cast. Because I’d like to set up a G41 mos and a G30s but have been waiting to see if either or both might pop up in Gen 5.

If I want a 40 pistol, I'll carry a .40, but if I wanted a 10, I would by golly want a ten! I don't know why so many manufacturers are so timid (stingy?) and download the caliber so much. The vast majority of .40 caliber bullets are designed to perform at .40 s&w velocities. When they are driven at true 10mm speeds, they over-expand or just come apart. In hindsight, it might have been better to make the 10mm a .410” caliber cartridge in order to use existing .410” bullets designed for the .41 magnum. They could have called it the .41 super, or some other catchy name.

    Wow… underwood has REALLY gone downhill. I mean that is just pathetic on their part that they have the nerve to put 1250 on the box yet load it down so much that it can’t even hit 1100 out of a standard Glock 20….. same power as freaking federal American eagle 10mm range ammo. What bothers me about it most is that Underwood used to make good hot 10mm, and whoever owns it or is loading it up now is playing off the reputation underwood used to have to scam consumers by selling us this cheap, weak 10mm but presenting and selling it as high dollar powerful rounds. I’d be very, very interested to see tests of other recently loaded/sold Underwood ammo, that way we can know if they’re watering down all their loadings like they did this one, which unfortunately I personally suspect that they sure might be. Thank you for doing all this testing, you’re the last line of defense for consumers by showing us how all these different products REALLY perform, that way we don’t get ripped off by buying into advertising hype without knowing what products are really capable of. Seriously, thank you so much for that my dude! Have a good one Tools, excellent testing as always

If many subscribers also complain to the ammo companies and make it felt with their dollars by buying only the best quality options, we may see some improvements eventually. I guarantee if people start poking these companies enough, they will respond. Or they can watch their ammo sit and collect dust while everyone buys from whoever puts out the best product. Probably important to actually tell the companies exactly where and what they are going to buy instead as they leave.
