      Flame of Rebirth, I love your Kubology! Looking forward to your videos reminds me of a couple classes I took with my favorite professor (back in the '80s). You managed to change the interpretation of the exchange between Rukia and Renji I've held for the last 18 years. I always assumed that Rukia was hurt and disappointed that Renji expressed (feigned) enthusiastic approval for her adoption into the Kuchiki Clan - it never crossed my mind that she would have seen through his act. But of course she would have! How many decades had they spent together? She knows him better than anyone else! Your interpretation of that conversation adds depth to that scene for me (and ultimately, their whole relationship)! So once again, thank you!

    Renji pleading for Ichigo to do what he failed to do is heartwarming and does indeed serve as foreshadowing to the rekindling of Renji and Rukia's relationship and also serves as the beginning of Ichigo and Renji's own friendship. Ichigo must be grateful that he avoided the 'kill' aspect of Urahara's philosophy in this fight.

      Indeed. Renji's bonds with both Rukia and Ichigo are some of the most heartwarming of the series. Seeing how far they have all come at the end, is very touching.

      @@jrgenvellesen7800 Yes, they all went through their own respective arcs filled with tragedy, triumph and everything in between. Neither compromised on friendship or being there for others. Renji's heartfelt plea to Ichigo was rediscovering himself and his own crossing of the Rubicon per say.

    Everyone who thinks rukia should've married ichigo understands or cares very little about how layered her relationship is with renji, throwing all of that away is such a waste of good story telling

    I do love that someone's taking the time to talk about the Renji and Rukia aspect of this arc. So many people seem to disregard it and then act surprised that they end up together when their story is at the center of Renji and Rukia's character development in this arc. Yes, not much more happened after this because their conflict was precisely resolved in this very arc (makes sense since Kubo probably didn't know at this point Bleach might be allowed to continue beyond this) but that didn't make it any less complex.

  • @MademoiselleRed1390
    @MademoiselleRed1390 Před měsícem +3

    I agree with the Renji vs Ichigo fight being a reflection of Renji's internal conflict regarding the Rukia situation, BUT I wouldn't say that Renji didn't DO enough or that he was scared of giving up society or everything he gained. It's more like he thought THAT was the way to do things. The backstory shows that Renji believed letting Rukia be adopted was the best for her even if it put distance between them, and his way of breaching that distance was to climb into society NOT for himself so much as to be closer to Rukia again. But by the time he got there it was too late. I mean there was this chapter were we're shown that the day Rukia is sent on the mission to Karakura Renji thinks that when she comes back he'll tell her he's a vice captain iirc. Renji didn't really give up on Rukia at all, he just played it by Soul society's rule, which was by rising in rank to be able to stand on her new societal level, so even in terms of his status it was more so for her than him. People underestimate the fact that Ichigo is able to easily question SS because he is an outsider. Renji isn't, he's been taught their rules. So when it all backfired due to Rukia's accusation, he's faced with his powerlessness not just in the burocratic sense but also in terms of knowing he's still not on Byakuya's level even if he tried. To me what stopped Renji isn't his status so much as the knowledge Byakuya would stand in his way and Renji as shown several times is constantly aware of their power difference. Byakuya was always an "obstacle" for Renji to get back to Rukia symbolically or literally. So to me the fight with Ichigo does serve as you said an angle of fighting a side of himself but also I think Ichigo winning serves to give Renji back hope especially from the perspective of knowing they'll have to face Byakuya. Ichigo not only is an outsider not tied by the rules of Soul Society like him but also Ichigo coming victorious means that Renji can face Byakuya knowing that even if he failed vs Byakuya (which he does), there's still Ichigo and not all will be lost if he does decide to oppose Byakuya for Rukia. To me that fight was not only about Ichigo reminding Renji to fight for what's right even when Soul Society says differently but also about Renji needing Ichigo to prove to him that he was up for the task, because if Ichigo couldn't even beat Renji who knew he wasn't on Byakuya's level, than what chance did they have? Hence why, once Ichigo wins, Renji is not only frustrated that he isn't the one stronger but also finally able to put those feelings aside and express his desperate desire for him to save Rukia.

  • @MademoiselleRed1390
    @MademoiselleRed1390 Před měsícem +3

    I don't think Renji thought Rukia's safety was more important than her happiness. I think Renji thought it was more important than HIS feelings. He thought HE was being selfish if he robbed her of that. That the selfless thing to do was to let her go because he downplayed HIS own importance to her. Especially since we see how Rukia is much more aware of how Renji in the end if fitting in better than her but Renji seems oblivious to Rukia's inadequacy iirc. From what I remember Renji didn't seem aware of what Rukia is going through nor realize Rukia already feels like she's losing him and is desperately trying to hold on to him. He thinks only HE would be holding her back by opposing the adoption.

    This analysis was really touching, emotionally. I felt so sad hearing your segment on how Renji and Rukia care so deeply for one another's happiness, yet deep down she wanted him to fight for her. I never understood Renji and Rukia's dynamic that well until today's video. Your points on tensions between different soul reaper units and loyalties were also very cool. One of the best bleach analysis I've ever seen tbh

    There's a lot of setups for many things down the line in this particular section, hence why I love it whenever Ikkaku and Yumichika appear, for that I have dubbed them the foreshadowing duo. This is the first instance we get of the scabbard being part of the zanpakuto and of the half release of zanpakuto with a wrong name, which are things that don't even become relevant until waaaaaaay later

    This was a good one. The Iccacu fight was a really good one also. Renji was and Rukia were meant to be together. When Renji is basically begging Ichigo to save her, that was so emotional, because he released that he could not do it himself. I liked how those two became friends. Good stuff.

    I love the SS Arc, now I would like to see Ichigo encounter different captains beside Byakuya and Kenpachi, in other words, just a "what if" version. How would Ichigo handle Shunsui, Unohana, Hitsugaya, or Gin? I suspect if we're being honest. He might stalemate Hitsugaya but he's not beating Shunsui, Unohana, or Gin unless they allow him to proceed forward. In that regard, Byakuya and Kenny were the best choices here.

    I really like your breakdown of the fight psychologically between Ichigo and Renji. It cahracterizes Renji so much, explains his outward disdain for Ichigo, and perfectly explains why he changes sides following this fight.
