SHOULD RABBITS BE KEPT IN PAIRS?

- In this video I answer the question "should I get a second rabbit?" while having a bonding session of my own. I explain why I think rabbits benefit from having a friend, and the importance of having bonded pairs. Obviously if you have a single rabbit, that's completely fine. I only recommend bonded pairs for people who are confident in being able to go through the bonding process. I have managed to bond 3 males which isn't the case for everyone so be mindful and take the bonding process slow to avoid risking any injury. If you have any concerns with bonding your rabbits, contact your local rabbit vet or rescue to get some advice.

The fact that we’ve probably seen our rabbits flop a thousand times and still love it when they do it
Seriously weak for it 😂 it never gets old xx
Right it makes me feel the emoji thts ur pfp
Omg I ligit tell everyone I know around me 😂
Love that you’re focusing on the benefits even tho you’re going through a “long” bonding process. Sending love & positivity your way! 🧡
Omg hiiii hahahah I just watched your video about giving bunnies their medicine, so helpful! And I loved seeing more of your buns xxxx
@@Katesque omg thank you so much 🥰🤗
I’ve had a bunny who passed away recently just weeks before 8 years old and watching your video made my heart full when I saw your bunnies sharing their bonds together and I can tell that you’re the perfect owner for them. ❤️
omg that makes me so happy, your bun must of had such a wonderful life with you xx
Wow your channel is growing so quick-
I started watching you a bit ago and you had like 300 subs :0
Omg HAHA yeah I have no idea what’s happening, thank you for sticking around 😂 you’re an og xxxxx
As a owner of multiple bunnies. I completely agree!!! There is a bond that can't be matched no matter how much love we give them. I love your videos and your my favorite bunny channel!!! :~)
I simply cannot groom them back 😂😂😂 thank you so much you’re so sweet 🥺🥺🥺
I got super lucky with my second bun and the bonding process. My first, the boy, fell in LOVE with the new girl and it was instant bonding. Of course, they were separated for about a week, but it got to a point where they were sitting side by side through the gate, we decided to put them together and have been inseparable best friends since!
How adorable!!!! This is the kind of stuff I’m weak for 😭 and what all the people going through bonding hope for haha xx
We have a flemish giant who will be 14-16 pounds. She doesn't get along with other rabbits at all and has bonded with our golden retriever and lab! It's the funniest thing! We have tried to bond her with others but she hates everything that isn't a human or a dog
aww, that's adorable. I have three bunnies, but sadly they have to be separated because they don't get along at all. One had multiple hip surgeries because of their continuous fights...
That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard!
General tipps I learned the hard way: Two females often do not go well together even if they grew up together (especially if both of them are not sterilized but even then this paring is not always successful), two males can form a good bond if they are castrated (especially if they are neutered early before they hit puberty), the pairing that nearly always works is one female and one castrated male.
It is wiser to choose two rabbits that are in the same stage in their life cycle (before puberty, adult, senior) , because they have even chances in clarifying the hierarchy (it is not so likely that one of them gets extremely dominated/hurt/frightened).
Lastly it is important to set up a SPECIAL enclosure in an area that both of them (in the best case scenario) do not know, in the enclosure should be 2-3 hideouts (e.g. empty boxes) with 2 entries (really important so that they can run away if the other rabbit is chasing them).
Now to the heart shaking part, if you want to cause your rabbit the least stress, you need to let them set the hierarchy without seperating them in between. They probably will fight and that is totally normal, they need to figure out who is first in the hierarchy. You should of course keep an eye on them, but minor injuries (a drop of blood) are not a reason to immidiately step in. You have to let them there (also over night) till they settled there fight, which shows in theire behaviour, they will eat from the same plate /pile and even start to groom each other.
I know this sounds like the excact opposite, but keeping them seperated in one room "letting them get used to the smell" is not really working with rabbits, because they can smell each other but can't solve the tension between them. (You can imagine it like the videos of the dogs behind fences barking at each other, when the fence is taken away they suddenly get quiet, because they can't just pretend anymore that they are super tough and instead will realise that they are both very stressed and in reality do not really want to fight forever or hate each other.) This process usually takes around 3 days when it is a perfect match (castrated male with female), of course you can get lucky and they cuddle after 12 hours. Unfortunately you can also get unlucky and the process can take 1-2 weeks.
In case the socialization does not go well, you should/could make an agreement (beforehand) with the owners of the rabbit you adopt, that they can take them back in an worst case scenario (or ask them if they would be okay, with you looking for a new home for the rabbit, when this happens).
But one try is not a sign that your rabbit does not want a friend, just that you choose the wrong one (don't fall for rabbits that go by the name chad ;b *just a joke*)
It is never to late for a bunny, even if it lived it's whole life alone (10+ years), I was a child when I had my first rabbit and I did everything wrong, because they get promoted as easy pets that can be put in a cages. Parents often don't read into the needs of these small creatures and kids are just happy that they finally got the pet they wished for.
I realised to late how much my rabbit missed out in life (no rabbit friend, only able to roam around when I took him out of his cage, more pressed than fresh food) even thought it was a long one.
I got the chance to make a difference, when I moved together with my boyfriend who got an old rabbit, I really did a lot of research back than and cried like a baby when the moment finally came, that we got him a rabbit girlfriend.
They made such a cute rabbit pair and you could really see him flourish in the last two years of his life
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I totally agree with you in a lot of ways. I've been hearing more often that females are more territorial than the boys. The bonding process always goes differently for everyone, and I agree with what you said about letting them sort out their hierarchy by themselves (sometimes it does more harm to keep separating them like you said). I was totally in the same situation as you, I was introduced to bunnies as a kid but now I've grown up and learnt much more and been able to give them the best life possible now that I'm older, they're definitely not an easy pet. It's interesting that you said you rehomed your bun because you always wanted them to have a happy life with their bonded friend, which you could no longer provide them. Amazing job for always putting their happiness first xx
I thought the title said Paris😂 lol😊
Totally agree with what you said in this video! It's so amazing to see them when their bonded
It’s so adorable, I just love staring at them together 😂 they’re so entertaining and adorable xx
@@Katesque Same!! Haha
I appreciate that you mention that some rabbits can be fine alone. My rabbit is four years old and I've had her since she was a baby. She is perfectly happy as far as I can tell from her behaviour and body language. I can't bond her as she isn't spayed (long story, she will be soon) and tbh, I don't have room for multiple litter trays and all the extra storage I'd need for a second rabbit. She used to live outside and exploring the garden and foraging for dandelions everyday kept her pretty busy and engaged. Once I go back to college, I'll probably start putting her outside during the day so she has more to do while I'm gone (and so other household members can interest with her - my mum smokes but not in the house and when my bunny lived outside she'd always run up to my mum and sit under her chair). If she seems unhappy (because she mightve gotten too used to being in my room with me 24/7 during the pandemic) then I might get her a friend but for now she's pretty happy and doesn't show any signs of being depressed or lonely. I always recommend getting a bonded pair because there are a lot of benefits to having two rabbits together, but I don't think it's abuse or neglect to only have one depending on the circumstances and the rabbit's personality
Edit: she was separate but in the same room as my bfs rabbit for a while and her personality completely chnaged. She became aggressive, super territorial, wouldn't let me stroke her as much, never seemed to fully relax. They shared a room for about a month. His rabbit eventually moved downstairs and within an hour of us removing his rabbit and her belongings, she started to return to her normal self.
I totally agree with you! Although buns do benefit from it, some of them are perfectly fine on their own. I love how you pointed out that it depends on your circumstances and the bun’s personality! Very important indeed xxx I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with your bun, sounds like she’s very loved and must’ve enjoyed staying indoors with you haha
@@Katesque thank you. Tbh, I think she prefers outdoors aha (where I live, the only real predators are people's cats - which she chases away - and the weather is easily accomodated for so it's perfectly safe.)
I really like your channel. You seem to be the only drama free rabbit CZcamsr on here which is so refreshing. Your views and opinions also seem very balanced and you seem like a great bunny owner. I reslly hope your channel continues to grow and reach more people - especially prospective bunny owners.
I was just on tiktok arguing with someone about bunnies not having to be in pairs. I believe we shouldn’t spread the idea that it’s fine. I understand that there are exceptions where bunnies can be aggressive towards each other, but in general one should always try owning at least two.
I don’t get people who think it’s okay to get just one because they can only support one, like if you can’t get two then you’re being irresponsible getting one
I believe that you people shouldn't be spreading misinformation. over 90% percent of rabbits perfer being alone, its been proven by scientific studies that it is NOT recommanded having a rabbit in groups or bonds. and its also not necessary
I rescued a bunny from an abusive home. I didn't know anything about rabbits but thanks to you and Lennon the bunny he's having a wonderful free roaming life. He's getting neutered tomorrow and when he's healed we're going to find a lady friend for him. Thanks for all the info
Your bunnies are the cutest
Perfect looking buns 😍
Aww they’re so cute! Can’t wait till I get some rabbits again, I finally convinced my parents that when we get a rabbit(S) that it would have to live inside in a playpen. Love this channel!
Omg it’s such a satisfying feeling to get everyone else on board, I’ve have to fight for having them indoors every step of the way but it’s not hard for everyone in the house to fall in love with the buns xx now my buns hangout with us in the living room
Aww that’s so cute! It is hard at first but they know I’m serious when I refuse to get an animal (unless it’s an indoor bun)! So it’s between a large heated shed or in a playpen/free roam in my bird room (I have budgies and I thought it through and figured it would be fine) but my dad doesn’t think it would be best in there, so I’m trying to find every possible way to have some inside! As if they were in the living room they might get in the way (as we’re a big ish family). But hopefully I can get some soon, as it’s been so hard seeing all these beautiful buns for adoption and not getting them!!!
@@Graces_life i'm planning on getting rabbits in a heated shed too
@hidden coffee, cool I really hope it works! I’m so excited to get rabbits again, 1 1/2 years without one feels like 1 million years!

Can you make a video about your litter boxes and cleaning them please? Love the videos, super relatable!!
so apparently being affectionate and cuddly comes as attributes with the bunny name "Cookie" :D my one year old lil boy is called cookie as well and he loves nothing more than being next to me 24/7
How cute 😭😭😭 all the cookies around are sweet like their name xx

You're bunnies are so cute ❤️😍
Love the videos great job please do a what's in my rabbits first aid kit if you have a first aid kit
Aw your rabbits are so cute! Your house looks pretty cool, will you do a house tour in the future? xx
At first I was against getting a friend for my female. But now having got a second rabbit, it was really the best thing I could had done for her. They are inseparable. They spend half their day grooming and cuddling with each other. At first I was afraid that she would lose interest in me, but that was not the case. I had a very easy bond < 2 weeks. Kept them separated but in sight of one another. Occasionally they will still mount/chase one another, but its more playful then violent. I have a few bonding videos under my avatar. Nothing professional, more for friends/ family. But I would be honored if you took a look. Love your videos
Elle is soooooooooooo cute! It doesn’t look like she’s lost any affection for you at all! I totally understand the excitement of seeing them give each other kisses for the first time during bonding I love how you filmed it all haha, they were already in love through the pet gate 😭😭😭😭😭 xx
@@Katesque Thank you so much for your reply. Elle is definitely one in a million. I think her to be my "once in a lifetime" pet. She's my best friend. Hugo is my male, at first he was very shy and timid, but has since came out if his shell. My veterinarian said I lucked out with them. Bonding does not always go as good.
Our rescue bunny, Bruno, is such a cutie! The 🐰 🐇 bunny rescue told us he wouldn't bond with other bunnies! Sometimes you have a loner bunny 🐰 that simply doesn't want to be with other bunnies! We still are learning a lot about each other! We don't really know what he has been through, before he became our bunny! He is the 4th bunny we've had! Hi can you make a video on how to litter train multiple rabbits at the same time? I am struggling to litter train 3 of my newly adopted rabbit
I have a mini lop that I adopted from a rescue and have been looking for a companion for him the past couple of months. I ended up stumbling across a bonded pair of “mini lops” and despite knowing the struggle of bonding them into a trio, they seemed like the best fit. They were on a rehoming website so I arranged with their owner to go visit them. Soo uh,, turns out despite the owner thinking so, they were FRENCH lops, not MINI lops. Still took them home though lmao so now I have a mini and two chunky bois to try and bond, wish me luck 🗿
SO CUTE AAAAAKHHHHH
Kat, I adopted two 6-7 week old male dwarf lop bunnies from the same litter about 5 months ago. They are great together but I am still having trouble with them running away from me and rarely letting me brush/groom them or pick them up (they kick like crazy and bolt so I have pretty much stopped trying to pick them up). They are free roaming and litter trained. Could you do a video about picking up rabbits from the floor (all the videos show how to pick them up from a table) and human bonding and grooming bunnies that won't let you. Thanks a bunch, B
I love when rabbits flop. I have a small rabbitry and sometimes bonding can be hard but the end is great.
I have two bunnies (English angora). I have adopted after my first bunny died. Bunnies should definitevely be in pairs, they are so much happier. I see the difference every day.
PS: I have two bunnies, i put so much effort to keep my flat clean and tidy. I don't know how you keep up with three. My bunnies are litter trained, no problem, but the cleaning the pen everyday, cutting their hair... It's a full time job.
Oh absolutely! And angora's are handful hand down to you honestly haha, cleaning every day is the only way to keep on top of it xx
More Ash content pls
I recently rescued a baby female and I've had my 2 yr old flemish girl since she's been a baby as well. Hoping to start bonding them in a week. My 2 yr old is spayed so I'm hoping she will be kind to baby bun. Send good vibes please 🤣🥰
Awhhhh how cute 🥺 definitely sending you good vibes haha, usually baby buns will happily hang out with anyone! it’s just when they get older it starts to really heat up because of their hormones, goodluck xx
I would start bonding when the baby is older than 16 weeks. Before that age they just dont get the bonding process and theycould get hurt.
hey! love your videos:) i’ve been bonding my two rabbits for about 5 months and i’m just wondering how to know when they’re fully bonded? i still get nervous when i have to leave them alone together but they’re not aggressive, they’re just mounting and chasing a bit...
Hey! Thank you so much! Chasing is still common in some bonded pairs, the main way to tell if they're bonded is if you can see that they submit to each other (their chasing is non aggressive and they display primarily positive behaviours like cuddling and grooming).
I don't recommend you leave them alone together until you're completely comfortable. Usually your gut is right!
Couldn’t agree more! While not illegal, in my country it’s considered extremely unethical to keep single rabbits and most animal shelters won’t let you adopt if you intend to keep just one… the way their personalities differ around humans VS each other is also sooo interesting. My dominant rabbit is a scaredy cat, while the more submissive rabbit is more daring and grooms me a lot. My bonding experience was a real struggle, but I’m so glad they have each other and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
That's so interesting that they regulate bunny adoption that way where you're from, the bunnies are definitely benefiting from it! xx
Are you german? Because same! I was just arguing with someone on tiktok who was saying that we don’t need to keep them together because there are exceptions. Like.. duh of course there are exceptions that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.
@@mycrittercity haha yeah. its kind of incredible how there seems to be like no global consensus on keeping rabbits...
I have 6 dogs, 6 cats and 1 bunny. We live in a trailer but we're planning on moving, my sister's boyfriend bought her a bunny but she passed so we haven't been able to give him much attention, when we move im planning on keeping him in my room in a decent hutch, I feel bad because he's so lonely and I can tell he's depressed, but 2 bunnies and 12 other animals feels like so much work, I don't know if I should get another or not, any suggestions would help!
Hi
You're rabbits really are adorable!!
Do you know how I could keep my rabbit from feeling lonely? I only have the one at the moments and soon I'm gonna have to go back to school so she may become lonley :((
Also! Do you know any websites that make rabbit safe items that ship worldwide/to the UK? 😁❤️
@Julia Disney Thank you!!
Awesome tip about the teddy 🥺 also if you have school during the day usually they’re asleep during that time anyway xx
i found my two buns to be more happy when they were bonded. i had their pens side by side before bonding but they were still alone. once everything with their surgery was done, they bonded immediately (guessing it’s because they were side by side for 4 months). their instagram is @teranovarex if anyone wants to see pictures ❤️
what kind of rabbits do you have? mine looks just like them and i’ve never known her breed
I think mine are dwarf or minilops haha xx
my rabbits - at the minute - are separated with a gate so they can still be near each other and see each other. they are 1-year-old Netherland dwafts both female. they have both been spayed. however, I still find that one of my bunnies is more territorial than the other and this causes all-out fights. the first time we rebounded, it took a month or so of slowly increasing their space in a neutral area and then moved up to their space (they free roam my bedroom). they were okay for a few weeks and then out of the blue, they are all out righting again, so much so when I tried to sepearte them, she bit my ankle and scared me. I don't blame her she probably thought I was the other rabbit, however, they were seriously injuring each other. I did try and rebond again however after about two days they were back to all-out fighting. school started back up and ie had to keep them separated the whole time - about three months now - because I cannot put them together and have no room or time to rebond them again, being a full-time student. they seem to be quite happy with how they are at the minute and flop regularly and often zoomies and groom each other through the bars of the grate.
is there anything you can suggest to help them along? or is it something I will just have to deal with - keeping them separated I mean? or doing like an hour a day of bonding if i can. like I say they still seem quite happy and have plenty of things to chew, nibble and room to run around. ANY HELP APPRECIATED! please I beg
Hey! Sometimes female buns can be the most territorial. If you aren’t already doing so, you can swap the buns over into each other’s sections so they don’t get territorial and get used to each other’s scent. I would also recommend you trying out those short sessions wherever you have time! xx
@@Katesque thank you!! I do often switch them round as well as their litter trays so they can smell each other. I try and give them small sessions when I can, however, they do seem to still be standoffish with each other. I have a two-week break coming up and I think it would be the perfect time to do a hardcore banding session. however, i only have two weeks so I'm really hoping it can be a solid start. any further tips would be so so appreciated - love you content :)
Had a hard time rebonding my two male bunnies, now finally they seem at peace with each other again. I just wanna know how do you manage cleaning up, do they not pee on the carpets?
As long as they're neutered they should have better litter habits, I have a young male and he's only peed on the floor when he's scared. He's getting neutered in a few days so should calm the habit down. I've put pee pads on the floor where he is the most and put a fleece blanket on top incase of any accidents aswell
^^^ great advice
My buns are also neutered and their litter habits have improved. I use paper towels to absorb it and then discard that in their litterbox and carpet cleaners that deodorise the area so the rabbits know not to pee on the carpets xx
If only I could get another but my bun was adopted and came to me in after a death threatening fight unfortunately he is terrified of any rabbit 😭😢🥺
Poor baby 🧡 thank you for giving him a loving home!
Your bun must love all the quality time he gets to spend with you xx he doesn’t have to share you with anyone else 🥺
Thank you guys! Haha he is probably happy he doesn’t have to share 😂
I have a 4 year old female rabbit and a 3 month old female and the 4 year old is fixed but the 3 month old isn't yet. We have tried bonding them in the past and the 4 year old bunny becomes aggressive and bites me and tries to bite the other bunny. So we have stopped for now and just have them in pens side by side. I'm starting to lose hope. When they are in the pens the 4 year old lunges at the other one through the panel. But sometimes they'll lay side by side along the panel like they're cuddling. They're so confusing and hard to read. We are going to wait to try again once the 3 month old is fixed but do you have any advice on hard bonds?
I’ve heard that females can be the most territorial 😖 definitely wait till the other bunny gets fixed too! I wouldn’t be discouraged yet. My boys would constantly lunge at each other through the pet gates, but now they’re all bonded. Just take the process nice and slow and just keep sticking to what works. You can try petting them both the whole time during face to face sessions so the lunging bunny starts to learn that the other bunny isn’t a threat.
This was so helpful to me xx

I had to separate them but I wish they could be like they used to be
Hey just wondering if your bunnies have been desexed? Xx
They are like both males but they aren’t fixed cause there’s barley any places that would fix bunnies round here. One is 4 months old and the other is 3 months old
@@Katesque also one of the bunnies seems sad and lonely now that I separated them but I don’t know what to do cause the other bunny doesn’t like him. I’ve got it where they can see each other but not where they can bite but I don’t know if that helps

Hey I really need help! I have a girl bunny while my sister has a boy bunny. We’re trying to bond them but my sisters rabbit came from APL and he keeps trying to attack my bunny. They are always separated but I’m afraid what will happen if we put them in a small space together to bond them. I really need help! Should we even try to bond them?
I’m not too sure what APL is, I hope they’re both desexed and you’ve done tonnes of research on bonding. If you feel confident to try it, please let them interact with a pet gate or barrier in between them for several weeks before beginning face to face introductions, contact your local vet or rabbit rescue for more advice on this xx
@@Katesque thank u! And the apl is animal protective league it’s in the state I’m from. They basically take in animals from anywhere. We are trying to do the barrier method right now. My bunny is so intrigued by him, but he ignores her and just plain eats all day. Thank u for the advice!
My problem by getting a partner for my bunny is that, my bunny isn't neutered because where I live they say ,he can die after the operation.I can't do anything about it ,I tried explaining, but the vet said others aren't vets and they don't know what they are doing. As Well my bunny can be aggressive from time to time and as well I can't fix it cause neutering isn't a choice and I can't travel anywhere right now,and I do see my bunny lonely sometimes and I try as much as I can to provide him love and attention.Where I live you have such a small toy selection for five toys witch is all they have I have to pay about seventy dollars ,and If i have to ship stuff from other countries the shipping price is from fifty to even a hundred dollars. :(
I think you need to switch vets. A vet who says they know more than others because they're a vet, isn't a good vet. Vets learn new things constantly, and need to learn so that they are up to date with medicals studies and care. Your vet seems to be old school and likely not knowledgeable in exotic animals enough to trust themselves with a surgery. Switch vets. Find someone who knows what they're talking about

@@Katesque Bahaha I was honestly so confused when I read that
I’m 36 minutes late
I have two free roaming, it's indeed interesting to see their behavior with humans and bunnies. Very very shy and timid unless food is on the table yet the most dominant of the two and one very curious and tame but submissive. Sometimes it seems like the submissive wants to be dominant by humping but her booty is just too big 😄 poor guy.
They’re just such fascinating creatures 🤔😂
@@Katesque yea! It's also interesting when bringing completely new elements for them on the playground, 😄 i got these mini jump bars (like you see with horse jumping) after i saw bunny jumping 🐇. Look up bunny jump on CZcams, it looks like so much fun! I wouln't get mine so well trained unfortunately. he can't or doesn't want jump a bar higher for food motivation but he can easily jump on a dinner table chair arm support right on my lap. 😄

@@Katesque if you have a ringing bell, a stick and rub banana or any fruit really on it for the scent and do some clicking training with pellet rewards they'll get to the point of jumping bars. It doesn't even have to be in height it can also be in how far they can jump.
My rabbits freaking hate each other. The oldest one likes to attack from behind and through the cage. The youngest goes into a trance like a snake and it pisses the older bunny off. They were fine before the youngest went through pruberty.
Oh man biggest yikes 😖 are they both desexed? Xx
@@Katesque yes and both girls. I’ve wanted a third rabbit but I can’t handle them not getting along.
Can I bond with yo... I mean my bunnies
OH I JUST 😂😂😂😂
I just don't think my 13 year old GS dog would cope with more than one bunny running around, they are bonded though
It’s so frustrating trying to explain this to people who are so set on keeping their rabbits alone
I have a New Guinea pig that my pig haves birth for it
