Removing Some Vibration From My New Dewalt DCST922B String Trimmer And Final Thoughts

  • This is the update that I promised about the problems with this trimmer. Replaced the head to remove some of the vibration and tried heavier batteries to balance it but it's just not comfortable for me. I can not recommend it but if you decide to try one buy it at a place like Home Depot with a good return policy should you have a similar experience.
Here are links to the head and batteries I used. The battery pricing varies day by day and mine were $129 that was the best price I could find.
ECHO Speed Feed Head OEM version amzn.to/2UBGVX6
    Dewalt 6AH batteries amzn.to/2QRREMd
I will not place a link to the trimmer because I don't recommend it.

After using it a couple times I will say it has the worst ergonomics of any string trimmer that I have used. The handle position makes it very hard to keep the head from touching the ground and making the cut uneven. Dewalt really knows how to screw up a trimmer.

I've bought into the dewalt battery line so I'm staying with them but don't know which one I should get. The 60v looks a lot better build and balanced but it's 2x as much and a new battery

The new 6ah, 8ah batteries use 21700 cells instead of 18650 cells used in the olders models. They have less internal resistance so they create less heat when being drawn from. Leading to better efficiency in high drain tools.

I get almost 20 minutes from the 6a and the 5a is about 2 minutes less so there doesn't seem to be much difference between the technology. This tool is definitely a failure for dewalt. Thanks for watching.

Good info. As having the same model, I've never experienced this type of vibration, but I absolutely agree with the ergonomics issue. I've moved the handle in every single spot I can, and like you, it seems it would be best right at the folding joint. I finally got it as close as I could and just mounted my shoulder strap to it. Makes it way better not having to hold up all that weight. This thing isn't a lightweight for sure. It seems very well built to me, but does take a fair amount of messing with to make it "feel right". This is going to vary widely for each individual. For me, I'd purchase it again in a heartbeat. It's performed fantastic.

If a tool is not ergonomic and comfortable to use its junk to me. From the comments it seems like there must have been a batch of bad heads and it's luck of the draw with the vibrations. I definitely would not buy it again especially after trying a competitors trimmer that had a larger cut area and a very balanced feel that made it easy to get a smooth cut. Thanks for watching.

I just bought the new 60v attachment capable line trimmer. I already had 20v gen 1. Love both.
I decided to buy a weed warrior 3 blade head... tried in o 60v first. Low and behold the bottom arbor plate was not even on all the way. Was sitting on shoulder instead of the 2 flats. Never noticed anything with 5 hours of use. I couldn't believe it. In the end I like the 60v so much I put the line head back on because its dispenser is so nice. I put brush head on the 20v and so cool. It's like a mini lawn mower. The blades are silver and with tiny guard very easy to see compared to yellow line. Plus gen 1 spool not very good at edging... 60v is very good at edging with its spool.

I use the gas ones down back and have to remove my clothes before going into the house. Trying to get away from gas because the fumes on my clothes make my wife very sick with her chemical sensitivity syndrome getting worse. I don't understand why dewalt would screw up the ergonomics with that hinge location. First dewalt tool that I am not happy with. Thanks for watching.

THANK YOU AGAIN for such a thorough and detailed update on your review of this trimmer. I will pass on it! You are intensely analytical in your approach to everything you talk about in your videos, so I ALWAYS trust whatever you have to say. I sure don't have your expertise, or patience, to fiddle with a brand new piece of equipment. *Not being able to adjust & balance the handle for me is a DEAL BREAKER* If you can't get it balanced right, it will cause a lot of back and shoulder pain the next day. No thanks! I have returned multiple gas trimmers for the same reason. These companies are too short-sighted with their one size fits all designs. We are not all six feet tall. Yes, ALWAYS buy local on this kind of equipment. I made the same mistake one time and never again. I am SO sorry that you are stuck with that thing. It will probably come in very handy for quick short trims but just not for the big jobs. I also like my Dewalt hedge trimmer. I just wish Spring would finally get here. SO much rain and mud. Stay safe and healthy. (Be careful with packages, mail, and even the handle on your mailbox.)

They definitely messed up the ergonomics of this trimmer with the hinge location and there is no easy way to fix it. Plus that hinge adds unbalanced weight to the front. It definitely will only be used up around the house for quick cleanups. At least the Echo head helps control the vibration and screws right on. Wish I had tried holding one at home depot first. I just let UPS place the packages on my porch first then put some gloves on and move them in the garage for a day. We really haven't woried about the mail but probably should start. My mud was just starting to dry up yesterday and it's raining now with over an inch coming tonight. I have plants spread everywhere in the house now. Stay safe. Thanks for watching.

I recently purchased this model and I have put about 4 hours behind it. I have not experienced any vibrations that you have described. I have the stock Dewalt head, have ran it enough to re-spooled the head twice, and it is still running great. As for the ergonomics, I use the 6ah battery and it balances out the weight just fine. I am 5'10" and the handle is feels comfortable for me. It does feel heavy and awkward without a battery though. The fold up option is a huge plus and the build quality seems in line with other Dewalt products. Just my two cents.

    @Kaipiso Před 4 lety +1

Hello and thank you for great videos and sharing your experience.
My friends have different heights and came up with a simple, yet not ideal solution to a similar problem (to another model). Once the handle is in more balanced position, they just attatched a piece of string or cord to it. So one of them doesn't have to bend, and at the same time, whole machine is quite balanced. This said, I wouldn't recommend this as a permanent solution, but as a simple test if it would work out.
I have created a custom handle to my bike to carry it at the balance point, so maybe a similar approach could be made here.
I would experiment with some thick copper wire attatched to the rod (without DeWalt handle) - to find a perfect balance position and - at the same time - custom handle shape. Then look for some other options and materials. One could think about creating a totally custom different shaped handle or adapt something on the market. Let's say... from a shovel or some gardening tool. Yes, this would be tricky to attatch, but still doable.
When it comes to the balance it is not the point of attatchement to machine that matters but the placement of the handle and your hand. So someone (maybe even DeWalt) could create perfect ergonomic (and maybe even adjustable) handle to this very unit. I have also noticed how you check it against your leg. Again, better handle design would help here and wouldn't go to your lap at all (no need for whole handle to be that wide at the bottom). At the same time, some vibrations could be additionally reduced if there is some rubber or foam at the mounting point.
Edge trimming would be another issue. If you practice it, then it would need some additional consideration and sturdiness. Also some other reviewers noticed trigger locking button position not prepared for this job either.
Shame on DeWalt for this ergonomic disaster. But if the machine has enough power and is worth keeping and using, maybe something still can be done about it.

I tried taking it apart to flip the hinge shaft so the handle could be lowered but with all the overmold it is not possible. The whole problem is the hinge location. Id recommend the ryobi RY40270VNM as the one to get.its a homedepot exclusive.only issue ryobi trimmers have are the batteries have the protection built into each battery, and if you run them down to no bars or leave them low over the winter months the voltage can drop too low for the charger to charge them.
Use common sense and don't run the battery down too low and you should be good.

Couldn't use this without back pain and numb hands. Switched to Milwaukee and they are definitely worth a couple extra dollars. Thanks for watching.

I find mine vibrates when the string ends aren't equal length.

@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 Probably is, but I have about 20 DeWalt cordless 20V tools, so they sort of have me captured in that platform

Hey old timer, why didn't you just contact DeWalt and ask for a new head? Anyways, I've owned the older 13" model for a few years now. It's been excellent. I do want to try this one.

I did contact them and was told it had to be taken to a service center. It's a totally unbalanced piece of garbage after using it a couple times now. The handle can't be adjusted to a comfortable position and it's hard to get a good cut. I definitely wouldn't buy it again. Love all my other Dewalt tools. Thanks for watching.

Which direction does the DeWalt head turn? I just bought one of these and i feel like it is spinning the opposite direction of every trimmer I've had.counter Clockwise when looking at it from the top.

They just put the same chuck on their cheap drills to make it wobble
    It’s a feature

I just contacted tech support and was told to pay to ship it back or ship it to a service center. You are stuck either way. Left a review. Thanks for watching.

Big disappointment! Dewalt has had always had a good product. The black wire string is vicious stuff. Be careful of that stuff it works well but I’ve had small pieces break off it’s like shrapnel.. ie long pants face shield and boots . Thank you . P S I bought a 20 volt black and decker trimmer. It’s light weight and my wife loves using it, so much that I don’t have to use it 😂

This is the first dewalt product I haven't been happy with. They really screwed up the location of the pivot. I doubt many will fold up a stinky trimmer and place it in their car and it completely messed up the adjustability for people under 6 ft. Never saw that sharp black line before and it looks like something that would weld together in the head. I should have gone with last years model that had the round shaft with plenty of adjustment. Thanks for watching.
