- For a renowned RPG studio like BioWare to break off from the games they typically produce to chase the live service trends could only end one way. In fact, it's a game I never played beyond its beta because I saw the train wreck coming from a mile away. Today, I sit down for the first time to see what Anthem is all about. This comes almost two years after the game had been shutdown and now I'm firing it up in 2022 to see what it's all about so you don't have to.

The graphics, flying around and the gun fight game play was fantastic. But my god everything else was so bad.
That’s true except for the gunplay. The guns felt like air soft pellet guns but the pellets were made of water.
@@AFatOcelot I absolutely loved the LMGs with the heavy mech but, ya most of the other guns were weak
Agreed
Anthem is very good in story mode.
The things you named are the main parts all that matters really but there was somthing missing, what was it? This was one of the coolest games I had played ,i think sonybshould buy the I P if anyone could revive it it would be a dev like insomniac or even bungie I think ktnks better potential than Destiny if it were done right.
Honestly Anthem looked cool in some aspects and having the Mass Effect trilogy team it should have been great. One of biggest disappointments for me.
Outrders did it way better. Use outriders system and add the flying to it
@@justinschmidt9231 Eh still quite mediocre imo
@@scalpingsnake i liked it just because i had fun with my brother and also free on gamepass
And the fact that they put the Mass Effect team on this instead of.. well idk.. THE MASS EFFECT GAME
@Jason C do you consistently like garbage? Or do you not play any good games?
Actually have fond memories of Anthem. Was coming off a twenty five year drug addiction, and it was the game that helped pass the time. Who knew?
Congratulations on overcoming that!! I have a couple games and movies that would be pretty forgettable to most people that I have fond memories of for helping me through some rough times as well.
Congratulations and stay strong. You are in control my friend.
Unpopular opinion aside, I loved my time with Anthem. The story and gameplay, character models and conversations, graphics and sound design. I really enjoyed all of that. It just had ZERO endgame
True
I still play it though
@@JINX-RSA does it work?
@@iphone5s659 Servers are still on If that's what you mean.
I have no trouble finding other players (I'm on playstation)
@@ralfsstuff really ok them imma buy
I think the flight packs were originally going to be in Andromeda, but got scared back to jump packs so that the flight was put into anthem.
Worse part was the the concept was such a good one, but they had wasted so much of the time they had (which i believe was about 5-6 years with a actual 18 months of development time towards the end)
Loved the flight controls and the game world, map looked good. Unfortunately that's where it ends.. Such a shame.. I do still like to have a fly around every now then still..
I really wanted the flying mechanics in a single player game where I cared about the practical and narrative progression of my character, which is what Bioware does best.
Anthem had so much potential, the gameplay was great, the open world really felt different, the mayor lack of content is what killed it. Anthem's gameplay is perfect for an Iron Man game.
I got almost 500 hours out of this game. I enjoyed myself enough to get my money's worth out of it, so I was good. (Still disappointed that they didn't take the steps necessary to improve on the game, though. Metric shit-ton of potential completely wasted. 🤦🏾♂️
See I enjoyed anthem. I thought the combat was fun and it was a good experience. I was looking forward to what the game was going to become. I was so pissed when the just pulled the plug. This game really did have potential I think with just a little love
"Fun to explore" is highly subjective. I really enjoyed exploring the world of Anthem. The scale of it was really impressive, verticality and all. Some fantastic vistas. There was enough in the open world to do, flying was intended to be a mechanism to get from point a to point b, but even for something that fills a basic function, it was very well done.
That aside, it was really unfortunate that they didn't flesh out the story and end game more...it left something to be desired. That goes without mentioning the broken loot system, which they eventually did _sort of_ fix, but by that point it was too late, people lost interest.
Totally agree. I enjoyed missions that were on the other side of the map as meant i could fly skip flip dive about the map like a space ninja. Traversal has never felt so great in a game
Anthem was merely a tech Demo that was suppose to be financially lucrative. Like Borderlands 1.
I honestly think Bioware planned towards the end of development to just use Anthem as a proof of concept and make a sequel that actually expands the world and story.
@Alexia Hoardwing not sure. Several reports about it being in development hell if i recall. If true they completely torpedoed the chance of a sequel. Lucrative and Anthem are barely used in rhe same sentance
I played it when it came out. It had massive potential but was met with Money signs and that killed it, my opinion.
I don’t think it was so much the money but there just wasn’t enough content. It got stale quick and just wasn’t enough to do in the end game.
@@cordercorder8785 Everything was a microtransaction in Anthem, that's why I say that. No content plus nothing but cosmetics makes a bad game plan lol
100% agree. Its probably the one game that im most upset about. However I do haver to disagree with the Micro transaction thing. You could farm in game currency to unlock virtually EVERYTHING at least up to the point when I stopped playing, but that was because it was all 100% cosmetics. Honeslty though, cosmetic micro transactions imo, are not that big of an issue.
Game wasn't complete, dev team didn't want to make the game in the first place, and they lost nearly all of their lead positions during development of the game, it was doomed from the start.
@@G9_Studios Was it? I'm playing it right now and I'm surprised by how little mtx there are. There's like two skins at a time and a couple of decals.
(Not saying I'm ok with mtx in full-price games btw)
Anthem. The game that killed my excitement for any bioware game going forward. Before this, they basically could do no wrong for me.
23:26 The sheer confusion in his voice when he realized he did something cool 😂😂 Tells me everything I need to know about this game.
The flying mechanic and movement of the javelins are underrated, because its really good. However you guys know what happened
Matty, I thought you weren't going to be working everyday like this but now your back dropping videos everyday
Nobody will change my mind about this game..i absolutely love it and still play it And its still very active and alive ..and yes it does have things to improve on like loot systems etc..but its still fun
I started playing the Division 1 for the first time and I’ve been having a blast. It’s truly a game you can turn ur brain off on and a whole day will pass by the snap of a finger. Haven’t had this much fun in a video game in years. Hopefully you give it a look in 2023 and see how it is. I think it’s still $13 for all dlc included on Xbox as I type this.
Division and Division 2 both are good time passer games in my opinion, I find myself.playing Division 2 through for the 3rd time. Been turning my eye towards Division again also. Division 2 has the same feel, with what I thought were great upgrades.
That E3 2018 reveal had me hyped for an iron man style game. Then i played the beta. Then i saw the reviews. Then i didn’t buy it. Such a shame. This game could’ve been *something*
Like a different game lol
And it turned out that that reveal wasn't even a real gameplay, it was a demo put together just to show and reveal Anthem during the event
This is one of those games that I was 1000% sure was gonna be amazing. Developed by BioWare and all the shit they showed us before it came out looked absolutely incredible. Gameplay and the flying looked beautiful. It was this game that truly taught me to not get too hyper for games before they come out
it’s $1.97 on the store should i buy it
@@tigerxxd I bought it for 4 dollars and I thought I overpaid. I wouldn’t touch it for free so no
I really enjoyed this game. Its a shame how it ended up
It was DOA lol
@@infernaldaedra sad but true😭
Damn I kinda want to play it again, you made it seem so fun
Anthem runs 60fps w/ HDR support on Series X, can't lie I still log on every now and then just to fly around ... 😅
I decided to wait on this while all my friends preordered the $100 versions. I had learned my lesson about pre ordering games prior to this game thankfully.
Thanks for doing this. Looking forward in seeing more. :)
I always get this urge to play Anthem, sometimes go and play for a little then get bored and quit.
I really wanted this game o be good still makes me sad it has so many flaws
Maybe a minority, but I really liked Anthem. What killed it for me is the lack of endgame and the barely there story. Moment to moment gameplay was great, group play was fun. It just needed MORE.
The only two games I’d ever preordered in my life were anthem and cyberpunk. Cyberpunk at least got some attention and love eventually… anthem didn’t.
This game must have been so miss handled during development, what more can you say. The game looks stunning & the flying mech stuff looks fun but then everything else.
Oh it was mishandled extremely badly, and not entirely on EA either. Bioware kept ducking around and seemed to make no real concept in stone aside from the flight.
that achievements name after prologue... "Early Warnings" - it hits on so many levels
This JUST went on sale on Xbox. That means someone there said this look like a game we want to peddle to our customers. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all need to step up and say "NO!" to these broken, unsupported games.
I had an awesome weekend with my best friend at his house when this game first came out. We played this all weekend. Never touched it since. But I remember it was super freakin fun for that weekend.
I'm surprised this didn't get Bioware shut down. Any other studio would have been done for this bad a fuck up.
I was so excited for a game of this style back then. Hell, I still want a game of this style. Such a shame this is what we got though
Play fallout 76
@@infernaldaedra bruh what, not even close
Anthem was abandoned,
ME: Andromeda was abandoned,
ME:LE was abandoned,
Bioware really do have a bit of a nasty habit.
Tried this for the first time on game pass few months ago and made it thru 1 hour before all interest disappeared. Had the same thought you did about them limiting your flying time. Makes no sense.
I played this game after all the updates came out and I had a lot of fun with it. My main problem with the game is how the story feels a little bit underwhelming and the gameplay feel very repetitive(Way too much grinding). Also the Titan battles are way too rare. I remember that they were going to give this game a massive update to change some things but then they canceled it. I really wish they added more to this game.
Yeah I basically agree fully, it is such a fun game that lacked a good story and cohesion. Otherwise it was super fun!
@josephpecoraro3828 hey would you say its worth the play through?story mode wise?
@@BaconBitsBru Honestly I would recommend this game, even though in the end it probably feels a little unfinished. Especially if you have friends, play with them and you'll geninuely have a good time. The story isn't too long either so it won't feel like drag the entire time. The gameplay is pretty amazing honestly, I am upset this game died.
@@BaconBitsBru now I would say so. The story is a bit mediocre but it’s still entertaining because of the amazing cut scenes and some of the funny characters. However it depends on your perspective once you play it. You might have a high level of patience or maybe you might not like it as you go along in the story. Still you should give it a shot.
I saw it on sale for 3$ last week and thought about it for a few seconds before reason prevailed.
It's on Gamepass so if you really wanted to play it and already have Gamepass... but if you are getting Gamepass just to play it then don't bother.
@@dpray96 Ya i haven’t even bothered to download it. I probably will at some point though.
I loved the flying and the shooting and was so super hyped and then the release happen
Merry Christmas Matty! but there's no way that this game only came out in 2019. It feels like it came out in 2009.
Good video! 👍
If BioWare took the basic concepts of "Anthem" and created their classic 3-to-4 party RPG instead of a live service game I bet it could have worked. The load times and generic mission structure killed this is past gen...the SSD's in current gen would have mitigated a good amount of the load times at least but it's hollowness is hard to overcome
Great design of suits and combat ideas. So much potential, too bad.
I haven’t preordered a game since. Does anyone remember the glowing beta reviews? It was a “can’t miss” Destiny killer. It did have some cool art style and the flying was fun.
So I've played Warframe, Destiny since beta, division and this.
Huge rgd nerd obviously love Mass Effect. I liked this game. It had a lot of potential but every game like this (and we can all attest to this) goes through a rough growing period once it comes out.
The problem was the structure of the game. The kinds of missions. The loading times. Then the pacing of content after launch. This needed the final fantasy 14 treatment. And then commit after relaunch and I don't think bio nor EA could commit to that. I'm genuinely surprised they tried.
But this did have potential.
Even destiny has it's issues but they seem to be one of the few that hit its stride.
The flying was the best thing about it. Was really fun. And the loading error screens, those were a hoot.
Most games common view change is Alt+Enter to swap between full screen or borderless. Off to a great start though lol.
This is definitely the most gameplay I've ever watched of this game. Very glad I skipped it. Thanks for suffering for us Matty; taking one for the team.
Imagine if PCF got the same kind of budget that BioWare got for Anthem to make Outriders.
I wish you would turn the game volume up and your voice volume down a bit but I do enjoy your videos
I've been thinking of playing this game recently too, its literally on sale for PlayStation for $1.
I got it for 2€, playing with friend. Not exactly the best game ever but I'm having fun
they need to reboot it
It's nice to see that Superman 64 finally got the remaster it deserves.
i tried anthem like 2 months ago for the first time since the beta and in the opening mission i got stuck on a rock the size of a baseball and was stuck in an infinite falling animation unable to move. didn't car to restart so i haven't touched it since
I beat this like 2 months ago, the parts of the campaign where it forces you to do certain activities is infuriating.
I can’t believe I paid full price for the special editions of Anthem and Mass Effect Andromeda and they just get to abandoned them and not actually fix the game.
Publishers and developers can’t be allowed to keep getting away with this crap.
The gunplay is solid, the flying is awesome, the visuals are great, the soundtrack is fantastic, the lore is interesting
Sure, the missions get a little repetitive, but every live service game with missions like this gets repetitive. It’s just the curse of live service games. Could they have added more? Yes. Can there still be more added? Yes. That’s why it’s a live service game. Give it a chance. Who knows, maybe it’ll turn out to be a good game in the future.
Personally I think the game is good, if only a little repetitive.
In many games there's always one class whose ultimate is a boost to their neutral game rather than a cool new ability. That could be the case of the Interceptor. In Destiny, my favourite classes are the Sunsinger and the Grace Dawnblade. Our super is just a boost to our neutral abilities. It's about personal taste. You should have picked a different javelin.
It's good that BioWare dropped the development of this game... they can use that time to work on something that is worthwhile from the ground up, not try to patch something that is fundamentally flawed.
Anthem is the reason I will never pre order a game again. I always wait at least a week after launch after all the new release hype dies out and all that’s left is what the game really is. But man if anthem was done right I have no doubt I’d still be playing it.
I absolutely loved this game it had so much potential
You loved it but admit that it did not reach its potential? It amazes me what people will love sometimes.
When this game came out I said, they killed mass effect for this?
I think EA should've let Bioware keep working on it. I believe it could of turned into a really solid game. I love everything about it. It just lacks so much in mission variety.
Edit: and the load screens on the now current gen consoles is pretty fast
Thing is EA had given Bioware plenty of time and resources, Bioware kept changing their mind about what they wanted this game to be.
@@dpray96 Partly. Bioware WAS overhauling for a 2.0 but was only given a small team and EA cut it. Nonetheless it would've been better than nothing. Instead it was just abandoned
@@vessellast836 While I agree it sucks that it was abandoned, the 2.0 was just the same thing as the 1.0 development. Bioware had no concrete concept of what they wanted 2.0 to be aside from some ideas listed on a roadmap.
EA had given Bioware plenty of time and Bioware kept (upto the cancellation) redesigning what the core of the game is. What Anthem truly needs is a cleanslate from the ground up with people who have an actually focused idea of what this game would be, from the story/lore to gameplay.
@@dpray96 I think the gameplay is what they nailed in my opinion. Different enemies and effects would've been a cool addition. I believe they should've came into it story focused first. Then focused on the live service aspect. The world is big, but since you can fly it makes it feel like it needs to be bigger.
Idk I do love this game. I just wish it wasn't abandoned my friend and I would be playing still
I love this game!! I hate how much hate it gets!! If they made a sequel and fixed some of the issues I think it would pop off!
Well, it's on sale for 1.79 til Jan 15th on the PS Store, so time to get my money's worth then.
Ain’t no way this game is even real, I just got done playing DA Origins and I can’t believe they also made this
Its going for $1.69 on psn rn at 97% off, dont think I've ever seen it at full price since day 1 lol 😅
Amazing potential never realised
This game is super fun it just released in a bad state and then was dropped so much potential
This game deserved more, probably if it wasn't published by ea probably the story could have been different. Game still has players to this day, so I don't get why they decided to abandon it.
I honestly think Anthem was a good game I haven’t even finished it. Just wish you don’t need players to play the missions!!
Just curious because it's always talk of how cut scenes look as far as facial expressions can you explain what you would resonate to
So, just got the platinum yesterday.
Overall: 5/10 game.
Pros: Flying around is really fun, enemies, general story, combat system, etc. Lots of really good things, that actually made it worth playing for me for at least some hours.
Cons: Probably the biggests most obvious downside is the horrible server, bugs, poping (map not loading) which really takes aways from the experience. Outside from that, the game is too easy, game economy is totally broken as you can get legendary items for day one, missions are usually 10 minutes of loading screens and 15 minutes of gameplay followed by 15 minutes in fort tarsis talking to characters. Too many worthless random collectables. The content seems like it felt really short of its potential. I guess the idea was making it like Destiny and expand the game with massive DLCs, and the base game could actually have been really good, but so many so serious problems that where never repaired changed a good idea and almost really good execution to... well, this. Another thing is the "?" for collectibles did not work well at all.
Overall: I would say is worth the Platinum if you are into that, but if it wasnt for that I would not reccomended, just play Destiny, is basically better in everything. Could have been really good and kind of unique, but its EA. Always EA.
Now imagine playing first time with a squad of randos and one of them runs straight to the objective constantly cutting of dialog and story. Fuck EA bioware died and now their dead body is being puppeted by EA marketing.
Man said fresh in 2022
So?
I played this game’s campaign completely solo a few months ago and loved it
But let's be honest, the soundtrack was still awesome. I still listen to Legion of Dawn from time to time
Fan from Morocco 🇲🇦
I just bought this for $2
Honestly surprised the servers are still up
I still plan now n then, the game is fun but need to be completed. Instead they gave a 15min campaign, a rushed game and no real solo part
I honestly didn't realise you could even still play it. Genuinely surprised the servers aren't shut down. I played at launch, I thought the Iron Man fantasy was cool(probs why EA is making an Iron Man game) but the story was trash, the shooting was trash and the loot was trash.
I knew this shit would flop. Basically ALL of my friends pre ordered and were claiming it'll be the best game ever, they played it for about 4 days
Same. Had a friend that kept trying to get me to buy the Legion edition. I eventually did for like $3, and ngl enjoyed the game's flight system everything else was meh.
@Alexia Hoardwing lmao yep, looks like an iron man game with the flight. I don't think a single one of my friends has over 20 hours played on it
My personal take is (as a diehard BioWare fan): characters were likeable and have potential, lore was beyond intriguing, the world was beautiful, the combat was a lot of fun, however the mechanics and storytelling was atrocious.
To be honest, I think theres the possibility of a cool game, if they made it a single player action rpg.
Live service x Bioware - never again please.
I had fun with it at first but then could never join a game. There were never any servers available. I also paid $2 brand new from GameStop
This game should be saved it could be so great it is really a shame
Happy new year
I don't get why they didn't just make this game free to play. It's already monetized anyway, just open the gates so more people actually bother with it.
It's on both EA Plays and Gamepass, so in a way they did.
Anyone know what the like/dislike numbers were for his original anthem video? Cause y'know we can't see those anymore.
Im fine with being the only one who loved this game. Easier to silence the negativity 🙂
I loved it too ❤️
The game is a good Tech Demo, the flight system is amazing. The issues was it had no direction of solid concept. I wish it had a better development.
I want Anthem 2.0 SO BAD! I'm so disappointed that they abandoned this game. This concept is so grate. I remember how much I loved simple but engaging combat in Mass Effect 3. The whole idea about detonation etc.
I saw the trailer and was never interested, didn’t realize it was live service lol. The only way this game could have been good if it was single player it’s so ridiculous they would do this game
I appreciate the UMVC3 music any reason why?
Funny video Matt
Lets be honest. There was almost nobody left there who is from the original BW. This is as legit a BW game as any knock off chinese merch is legit.
My mates and i had some really good times with this game.
We did dungeons and such it was really great, then decorating our mechs no joke i loved that stuff.
However that is what this game should have been, those where the good parts.
Looting, doing dungeons and working with a team.
The story? My god that was a waste.
This game should have been about you creating a pilot and then a suit and then proceed to have you be that pilot.
You work? Gather artifacts, scout, survey or find new outposts with a team.
The missions should be procedural generated in that huge map with some areas that changes due to storms and such.
Have a story but have it be in the background.
They tried to do a typical grand story with you as the main guy/gal.
That should have been going on the background.
We should have been working with the various factions, doing work.
just building us up as a force of nature.
I hate how this game was wasted, there was something here and now i fear we will never experience that again.
I wish this game did well or at least the concepts was better executed cuz flying around was so fun
It's clear that it didn't stay in the oven long enough, and didn't get enough player testing. They would've found out real quick that this gameplay loops were lacking.
So the game is unplayable? Is that the verdict? I saw a copy for five bucks and it is still a risky purchase at that price! Crazy. looks nice though! The idea is good. The execution of the full package didn't come together then. What a crime from such a great team. Hopefully they got them on a new familiar project. Thanks for the upload.
itd be cool if you streamed while youre recording these types of videos
