- When you get a new horse you there's a few things you need to do on the ground before you get on to make sure you horse is safe. Today we are going to make sure that Mowgley is comfortable with the saddle while lunging him!
Mowgley is going super well and is coming along really nicely. This week we'll show you what we do with the reins, tips and tricks how we put on the saddle for lunging, and the lunging session to get him ready for riding in the future.

I have to say how beautiful this is. The space you allow for them the fumble and be confused as they are learning is so incredible. The not punishing is so awesome! Its so encouraging for that being that you are working with! When you said "dont worrry ab that, its just a moment when its hard. I felt that tommy soul. All beings should be given such grave! This lungeing technique has changed my groundwork game with my OTTB! LOVE IT! This has really helped me get a ton more relaxation on the lunge!

Great tip with tying up the stirrups for lunging. I haven’t ever seen lunging with the line set up like you have. I would think that there would be more of a pulley situation on the mouth to signal downward transitions which wouldn’t be ideal of course. I’m eager to see more how it works in future videos.
The stirrups is a great tip isnt it. The lunge rope set up is useful as you can see in the videos, the horse responds first to voice command to make a downward transition and circle only comes smaller if the horse does not respond to voice and at that point the lunge rein would guide the horse smaller on circle to make the transition, not pull on his mouth. Hope this helps

I love your patience with him! On horses that are stiff to one side do you spend more time on that side to help with the flexibility or do you still keep the time on each side the same?

I love the way you tied the reins around his neck.
It is a safe and handy trick! You can also use this method if you need to have the horse tied up with bridle on, just put head collar over top and secure cross ties to halter and then reins are safely tied up ✨

I love how you think of every detail and that you can explain why you do what you do. I know when I was starting out so may teachers would tell you to do or not do a thing but not why and the why makes everything start to make sense.

Love the trick of trade with securing the stirrups in the lunge...early on with lunging my OTT I would cringe when the stirrups would drop because it was going to be an episode as he didn't appreciate the surprise.

This was a really helpful episode for me :) My mare does exactly the same thing only to the left. I‘ve been working with her on that but it‘s nice to see and hear you working on the same thing. Also I am quite interested in how you use the double lunging!

Hi. Thank you for the great video. When lunging my horse she always becomes really excited after cantering and it can be difficult to get her to settle back into a nice walk. I think this will help us so much!

I tried the way you attach the lunge line and love it! I usually steer away from lunging in a bridle but having it slide through makes a lot of sense.
Interested to see if you do it with the double lunge or if you do it the “normal” way.
My lady still fights the bit, even tried riding in a head collar figuring she knows how to steer in that, but she fights as soon as you’re on her back and ask to steer, even on the loosest rein!
A few have requested a video on double lunge so stay tuned!
Do you use an opening rein initially ? Horses instinctively pull back when pulled on. It may be that she has not learned to follow the pressure. Start on the ground with her lead and give the slightest hint to turn her head.. maintain the hint and as soon as you feel the slightest yield.. even just a lessening of the weight of the yield give the lead some slack.. if she turns away, don't increase the hint.. follow her head with the same weight of feel until she comes back to give and repeat. As she follows the hint wait a split second longer each time. In no time, she will be following your hand with her head. At that point you might be able to ask for the head and neck.. just keep adding in small increments until you suddenly find she takes a step.. the release at the moment she complies is what tells her that's what you wanted. This should transfer well to undersaddle provided the bridle, bit or saddle are not causing discomfort.
You don't go totally slack, just neutral. You don't want her to think she has to drop the weight feel, rather just to follow it.
Is it common for a horse to favor one side? Or, in Mowgley's case, because counter-clockwise is "race" direction and that is what OTTB horses are used to? Love this series!!
Hi Helen, yes all horses start one sided, some more than others. For racehorses this can be related to racing direction and training but also horses are naturally one sided. With correct training it is the goal to help them be equally supple both sides ✨

Love this series!! Super helpful for all breeds too, not just OTTB. Do you use the ‘clicking’ sound as a way of asking him to engage his hind? I’m used to using that cue to ask them to move up a gait so would love to know!
Thank you! The voice commands help back up the other aids, so the cluck send the horse forward a little without rushing forward or changing gait. 🤩

Great video! A question with uneveness through the top line - my horses topline is better developed on his right side than his left. Does this mean I have to do more work on the left rein, or the right? I'm confused lol.

When and how do you start correcting the cross-firing?
Hi Britney, the cross firing is balance, it shows the horse is struggling to put the weight evenly on his 4 legs, so the key is to work on the horses suppleness and strength until they can balance better at the canter. Also changing between trot and canter can help the horse to find its balance. ✨
What kind of saddle is that? My retrained racehorse came with one but ot fee look d like a hunter style and makes me sit quite back and my legs look short

What does it mean when the horse is stretching out his head so long and low? Sometimes my horse even tilts his neck sideways as he stretches out and it looks quite uncomfortable.
It is not necessarily a negative thing that the horse stretches down to the bit, the next stage it to teach him to start to balance and make his body shorter. At 11min and 46s in to the video is exactly what I am struggling with, with my OTTB. I know that he has a stiffle on his back right leg, which is why going this way may be uncomfortable for him. But if I keep pushing him to go this direction he gets aggressive with me and then starts to stomp his feet at me and then he starts to charge at me. This is where I need help
Perhaps he is telling you that he is sore when you push that way? Have you talked to your vet/had massage to loosen it up?
When ever I ask my horse to move his hindquarters on the lunge he turns in to face me as that is what he was taught. How to I change this?
If this happens it means the horse has stopped moving forward also so the horse just needs to keep travelling forward as you ask the hind quarters to go out. Hope this helps 💕
When working with a young horse, or bringing a mature horse back into work, how often and for how long would you lunge or ride? There seems to be a lot of difference in opinions. 🤷🏻♀️
