- When you get a new horse you there's a few things you need to do on the ground before you get on to make sure you horse is safe. Today we are going to show you through all the ground work we do to prepare our horses for riding!
Mowgley has already put on a lot of muscle from the walker, being hand walked with controlled walking exercises and a few lunges in between.
Lunging is important also for our thoroughbred Mowgley to understand how the bit works, the bridle works AND how the connection from the back to the front works. We do all before we get on him, so it's safer for the rider and a happier experience for our horse!
We hope you enjoy this and learn heaps from this episode. Be sure to leave us a comment on your thoughts of this horse in the description below this video!!!

Thank you so much for promoting helmets during groundwork! An 11 year old girl at my barn recently had to have her ear reattached due to being kicked in the head while lunging. And my worst ever fall happened while walking to our arena (very scared of snakes!), reared, flipped and pinned me. Thank god I had a helmet on because it got cracked in half. The worst injuries happen when we least expect them!
So sorry to hear about your injury and the girl at your barn but good reminder from you about safety!
Oh my goodness.... what a bizarre circumstance. I'm so sorry that happened to you but very glad you're OK. Also so glad you had your helmet on. 👍 That is a really scary story & a good lesson for everyone reading this. I don't blame horses for their primal fear of snakes, I don't care for them either.
Omg i really can’t say enough times how much these videos are helpful. I just love that Alicia really give everything in and she is so energetic and tells the same thing in so many different ways so it becomes clear for every one of us. Thank you so much doing these videos. I think we all can say that we learn a lot all of these content
Thank you for your wonderful comment, I will show this to Alicia as she will love reading this 🤩
Well said Alexandra! Alicia is very thoughtful as to her horses' needs & their comfort. The wheels are very slowly starting to turn towards a more horse centric training/ feeding approach!!!
This is possibly one of the most useful videos I’ve seen. It’s made me realise that I don’t do enough during the lunging phase.
Love this! So glad it helped you.
This is a super head exploding video for me. I tried, many years ago, to teach my green but older Quarter horse to lunge but I had little idea about how to do it, or what the goal was, or even why lunging was useful. We never figured it out. I wish I had had these videos then, my really good horse could have been great! I am definitely saving this video so I can find it later. Thanks for your hard work and breaking everything down so well so I understand.
Wonderful!
This was a very good lesson for people who really don’t know how to lunge it’s more detailed than most people realize tfs😎
Thank you 🙏🏻
I love her method of training. And as a show jumper I will use this method of lunging, when I will start working with my young jumpers.
I think that even for jumpers dressage is key to success and this channel helped me a lot with my riding and my jumpers🤍
Love reading this! So glad the videos are helping you x
So glad you let him slow down gradually - so important.
💕
Anyone else see that huge glob of slobber 😂😍 what a cutie thanks for sharing these are sooo helpful ❤️
So glad you found this video so helpful! Thanks for watching x
The joys of a baby horse! Such concentration on his face thinking about which leg is which when he’s asked to transition 😂😂😍
He is beautiful isn't he!
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS! I just wanna hang out with Alicia every day (and little George too... duh!) and have her teach me all the things!
We all want to hang out with Alicia!! Luckily we have her in the videos and 6 per week!!! 🤩
👏👏 for lunging with a helmet on! I was looking at an OTTB this past weekend loose in the roundpen and she kicked me in the thighs. First time being kicked in 15+ years of being with horses. So grateful it was there and not elsewhere. Never gonna do that again without a helmet.
Oh no! Glad you were okay! Yes, this is a must! x
I just wanted to come back to this once again and say thank you. I have a Standardbred. The “poor mans” horse here in New Zealand. He’s raced for 5 years as a pacer in both NZ and Aus. Luckily for me he worked as a galloping pacemaker after he came back to NZ so also knows how to canter and gallop. But I had real trouble getting it out of him.
Following the strategies you spoke about in this video, in our first session he made a really noticeable change towards his canter strike offs. At one point he even appeared to look at his inside hind and stamp it down as if to tell himself “like THIS”. And every session thereafter he’s put in a really obvious effort to getting his strike offs on the correct lead and not fumbling or bouncing his legs. He can’t maintain it for more than a few strides yet, but that’s ok. It’s all progress.
Thank you once again!
Glad you are finding the videos really helpful and sounds like your horse is making good progress!
Love all the content 👌🏼🙌🏻🙌🏻 I’m learning so much as no one ever shows enough of all this important ground work. Also the first time I have seen the lunge clipped to the roller connecting at one side of the bit like this. Thank you so much for all of the free education it’s awesome 👏🏻👏🏻
So glad you are getting so much learning from the videos - this is what makes it all worthwhile 🤩
l LEARNED SO MUCH CANT WAIT TO TRY HIM ON THE LUNGE NOW EEEEEEEEEE!
Woohoo! Tell us how you go x
This is just what I needed to see. This is right where my boy is (minus the broncing 😆)! Thank you so much for this series!
You are so welcome!
Such a great teacher!!
Thank you so much! 🙌
Alicia really know what is dressage training 🤗Thank you Alicia for everything that you are teaching to us💜🙏🙏🙏Sending tons of blessings and support 🤗💜💜💜
You are so welcome! Thank you for your kind words.
Spending all my morning binge watching your riding success as she’s such a positive coach and I learn so much 💗💗💗💗💗
Love this!!! Thank you xx
Great pointers! These techniques are not only important for young horses but for old timers too! Reminds them what their job is and how to listen.
I love how Mogley is constantly asking you questions by looking at you. He’s engaged is appears to want to learn and work.
Yes great reminder and for horses changing disciplines of any age!
Had a laugh watching the "shoelace." I think Mog's planned the whole thing!
We think so, too! 😂
He is doing so well! Congratulations to you and your team. 👍🎊🍾
Thank you so much!
You are an amazing instructor. I've trained horses but I always find your videos detailed and like I learn something I didn't know before or a different technique.
Well said. Absolutely I feel like I'm FINELY getting "things in".
Wow, thank you! 💕
I love this so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing us the REAL WORLD! I just found the beginning of Mowgley's journey and am watching the whole progression now. This is so incredibly helpful and you explain everything so well! Cannot tell you THANK YOU enough!
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for always tuning in xx
We are getting two (gentled) mustangs that I'm going to start doing dressage with. I don't expect them to be as green as Mowgli, but this series is soo helpful with how to start them in dressage. I don't expect to show them, but just to get them to use their bodies correctly and be balanced to have a "career" being pleasure riding horses. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing!! We are so glad we can help :)
That was fascinating! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Super helpful! Love the OTTB series!
Glad you like them!
Yes this is awesome! I needed this!
Glad you loved it x
Very interesting approach !! Getting my new OTTB soon, will try !!!
Have fun!
Another awesome video. Thank you so much Alicia. Wow Mowgley has beautiful movement. I learnt so much from this video.
You are so welcome!
This was so helpful seeing this warts and all! Thank you so so much! Love seeing how you worked through the not so pretty moments and stayed so calm. I learnt so much, thank you again!
Great to hear that you enjoyed watching the video. Are you looking forward to this week's video?
Love this channel and all the advice & tips! Your energy is infectious and the way you teach the concepts is so easy to follow. Also truly appreciate seeing the good and the not so good examples, it’s nice to see how you handle the different things we may experience. Thank you so much‼️
Thank you for your lovely message! You are so welcome!
This video has been the best yet, exactly the information and visualisation I needed for lunging! Thankyou Alicia!
So glad you loved it!
Fabulous instruction, thanks Alicia.
My pleasure!
Video had some gems of advice. Agree that you should really wear gloves when lungeing.
A tip for viewers out there. If your off the track racehorse is a Standardbred, lots of them are terrified of whips and have to be shown that whips can be used for signalling and isn't just there for hitting them. So you would need to do that before trying lungeing.
Great comment and if you watch Alicia's Q and A this week on Tuesday you will see she answers this question exactly!!!
Fantastic videos Alicia, I look forward to them so much!
So glad you are finding the videos helpful 😇
This is so helpful!! Thanks so much Alicia. I am training a young horse and this is so helpful. ❤️❤️
This is what it is all about! So glad we could help!
I love this lady’s energy and her tips are actually super helpful!
Thank you so much!! x
He has filled out so nicely and clearly feeling good! This video is great!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Fantastic tutorial! Very helpful & I have quite a few takeaways!!
Glad it was helpful! 😇
This is amazing!!! Love that you “let him find his way”!! This is SO helpful to me!! Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
I'd love to see a world where nobody used bits anymore. Seeing so many people succeeding with bitless bridles and actually reporting that their horse is just as responsive and more relaxed makes it a no brainer for me.
Such helpful videos, thank you!
Glad you are finding them helpful!
Loved watching this ! You are so talented at what you do and so generous for sharing it with us. ❤
Mowgli is looking very handsome already. I'm excited to follow his progress. Bless you for everything you are giving of yourself. You and Tash are my absolute favorites 💕
Thank you! So glad you are loving the content and yes Mowgley is very sweet and is turning into a wonderful horse.
A very very helpful video. You can see the relationship building. And it's nice to be a part of the journey... Awesome video xx
Yes! Thank you!
Very informative. Thank you so much for the video!
You're most welcome, Em! x
That was so interesting. Thank you for all the explaining you do while also showing what you're talking about. He has really started to fill in with all the feeding, handwalking, and walker work. What a handsome, sweet boy. Ah, Mowgali -- such a good name for him too.
He is very sweet isn't he!
So impressed with your videos and your high level of horsemanship!
Glad you like them! That is such a lovely compliment. 💕
I love your videos! Love the way you train! Thank you for showing us a green horse.
So glad you are loving the content!
Loved this your videos are so helpful
Thank you Carol x
This video was awesome Thank you Alicia I have the same lunge roller ouch! I'm going to start using my girth from now on, great tips on keeping safe too Mine is very reactive to my lunge whip as in scared so I use my dressage whip instead. I'm going try the clipping to the lunge roller from now on too. Loving this series We all appreciate your time you put in to help all of us with our TB and maybe one of us takes one of ours to the Olympics that you helped training and get amongst the Warmbloods.
Love reading comments like this! Glad the videos are helping you 🤩
Thank you for sharing I love ground work more than I do riding
My pleasure x
Brilliantly explained
Thank you 🙏🏻
Ace video. Wish this could go out to every young person starting out doing this kind of work with horses.👏👍😂👍👍
Thank you for your lovely reply!!!
I keep watching to extract all the tips I can as I have a two year old coming through and aim to start his groundwork at two and nine months. Thanks
WOW! I hope this technique works for you! Tell us about it! x
Love your vids Alicia ! Greetings from Montreal! Love the giant gob of spit he worked up and that hung there until he managed to fling it onto your britches ! THAT is what your camera person was laughing about I'll wager ! Perfect horse person moment !
Hahaha love this!!! Good pick up!
Love the videos that are real time! Not editted so we cant se everthing! Keep doing this!❤️
Thanks for the feedback 🤩
That's a really great video for beginners, I'm sure it'll help many people, good job 👌😁
Glad you think so!
I love your videos thank you so so much 🥰🥰🥰
I’m in Auckland NZ and we have been in lockdown level 4 and we can’t ride our horses if they are grazed away from your home, so watching and learning from your videos have kept my passion alive, so thank you so much 😊
I can’t wait to get back into riding and I will start with lunging to get Levi fit again as he has had 4 weeks off.
You are and inspiration and a beautiful lady thank you 🙏
Super glad you're enjoying it!! Hope everyone's safe from where you are!! Can't wait to hear about your progress once you get back into riding! xx
Lovely to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just can't say how helpful these videos are with us being in the middle of training are thoroughbred. Thank you so much!! #Harlow
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
Super!!!! Thank you!
😇
Fantastic and what a fun horse. I always used to use the lunge line like you have it, I found it kept the horse better under control and always with a inside bend and later on when I rode them they understood bending. Also helps the rider when starting big gangly horses. I am long past my riding years, but you are making me want to ride again!
Happy you are loving the videos and loving that you are inspired to ride again 💕
Good Luck !! With your OTTB !!!
Thank you!
Great video :) thank you
💕
I’m loving all the videos. You are packing in so much information into them. I’ve only ever attempted to lunge my boy twice and discovered he doesn’t understand it and just wanted to be beside me as he was confused and takes comfort from being near. (Also I don’t really know what I’m doing) seeing you do the transitions and having structure to your session (as supposed to just walking, trotting, cantering circles - which is all I’ve ever seen anyone do before) makes me feel I want to get a coach out to teach both me and Pedro to lunge as I think it would be really useful, especially over winter when lack of light and low temps make me less enthusiastic about riding! 🤣
Love this comment, this is what it is about - helping you with your own horses to progress and learn. So glad you are loving it x
love this!
😇
Very helpful!
Glad you think so!
Fantastic video 😍 amazing to see you promoting helmet safety! Really enjoyed this Alicia ❤️
Thank you!
Wow! Mowgli is stunning, can't believe he's only 3, as he fills out he's going to be huge!!
Hi Jenny, he is lovely isn't he! Mowgley is 4 years old x
@@YourRidingSuccess Oh, sorry, I thought I heard Alicia say he was 3.
Hi Jenny, she prob did! She might have made a mistake x
his baseline movement is quite good! It is exciting to see---because imagine how much it will improve once he has built up fitness/balance/topline! OTTBs have SUCH good work ethic and learn SO fast, though their process is usually not linear those moments are impressive to witness.
So true Julia! This is what excites me about training horses is the improvements you can make 🤩
Best informative equestrian videos available. 👍🏻😃
Wow, thanks! x
Thank you! I really appreciate this video. I've watched it probably 20 times and each time I pick up a little more. I'd love to see more videos on groundwork. I'm also curious to see how he goes in the other direction (his "sticky" side) and how you navigate that.
Soo great to see you are binge-watching the videos and that you're learning so much from them!! Great suggestion on video content! We'll see what we can do x
Great video!!! Loved the way the horse stretches?
Thank you! He is wonderful isn't he!
This video was amazing thank you! I tried this out with my young horse who normally goes around with his head in the air or broncing. 2 mins in and he was trotting around with his head on the ground
Amazing!! So glad it went well for you xx
I tried this with my OTTB here in AuS, and Honestly it just all made sense. Alicia was so positive and reassured me it was okay that he picked up the wrong lead and his stiff side was okay when he stopped and turned. This is brilliant stuff and hearing it with an aussie accent and knowing how things work over here 😀
So glad it is resonating with you! That familiar accent is helping!! Do you have any other questions about OTTB's?
@@YourRidingSuccess how do I then transistion this to riding ? Is there a like a circle or how many times he rounds on the lunge before I hop on? Maybe some info on inside leg to outside rein as he falls in alot on that sriffer side. Thank you xx
Hi cassandra, I think yesterdays video should answer this xx
czcams.com/video/mBIi_O6GVys/video.html
Excellent lunging session.
Thank you ✨
I never thought to use a good dressage girth on a roller! Thanks for the tip😀
Our pleasure!
I'm so jealous of your roundyard, its such a nice size
We are very lucky 💕
thank you
Our pleasure!
I love this video so much. I wish though Alicia would promote the horse having to face the rider to send them out rather than her backing up. I wish the horse did more foot work at the beginning then Alicia. Still an amazing video and I wish I had this 5 years ago.
Thank you for your comments and suggestions ✨
Fantastic videos ❤❤ Also how gorgeous does he look in his tack!
He looks very handsome!!!
Aw, look at little George looking at what's going on!
💕
The ottb vids are my fav!
Mowgley is pretty lovable isn't he!
@@YourRidingSuccess he really is!
There videos are amazing 🤩
Thank you!
😂that's a cute little fella next door
100%!!
look at that little baby
He is very sweet isn't he!
Gold!!
🦄
Love watching your videos. How big is your lunge pen please?
Thanks Luci! I will try and find out for you but it is quite large!
Walking on the lunge before you send them out trotting will help train them to relax and walk at the end too. :) Same concept. Walk, halt, walk, halt. Change direction often. Thoroughbreds love to just move their feet so it would be too simple to just let them trot straight away. I like to walk for a few minutes before moving up the gaits - just as I do when I'm on them. Repetition helps.
Thanks Amy, Mowgley goes on the walker and also walks at start and end, especially at the end where Alicia points out that he needs to walk until he is not breathing so hard.
@@YourRidingSuccess I know. But walking on the lunge at the beginning is still possible 🙂
Love this series. Please do a video of the double rein lunge with explanations. The lunge hooked to the roller in this video was new to me. I can see how it is a great tool to have my belt. The double rein lunge would be another good tool to have.
Also, is that a RolyPoly pad (pink folded)? I cannot seem to find them for sale any longer and would be great to know where to purchase. ☺️ Thank you!
Great feedback, I will ask Alicia both of these questions and let you know!
I have a horse that rushes in on the lunge and I just try to gather up the lunge line as she does it and stop her from running me over. She has little to no ‘respect‘ of the whip and will just run run into it. I’ve been taping her on the shoulder as she starts to turn, which sometimes works if I get it at the right time, but then she speeds up and goes A LOT faster. Would love some tips, I’m really enjoying your OTT series and can’t wait for more 😁😁
Good question! I will ask Alicia to answer this one and we will let you know when she has answered it ✨
I would love to see you cross tie train him!
Stay tuned as we will be doing some handling videos with Mowgley as soon as next week!!! If you subscribe to our channel you will receive notifications when we release new videos so you don't miss out!!
Wow, I cannot believe how young these race horses are!
Mowgley is 4 years old which is older than the average age of 3 that you would start with ridden work 💕
Hi Alicia, from NSW, AUS. I have not long found your videos and just want say thank you for doing them! they are soo helpful and I have learnt soooo much!! and yes mind blowing!! I've just bought a 4 yr old OTT, I'm just getting back into riding. I am going to follow your way of training and see how he goes! Looking forward to hopefully a transformation too haha
When he lunges he goes around for a bit, then swings his hind quarters out and stops, sometimes I can get him to go forward again other times he'll back up and I have to lead him forward. he seems to do it in the same spot and there is not fence close to him on that side, not sure why he does that...maybe he doesn't like the whip...
He also flicks his head up and down and around as if to say something is not right or he doesn't want to do it...I'm only lunging him in the sheep yards as I don't have a round yard, so its an odd shaped yard. the ground is not super hard but it's not soft. can that affect them?
Would you have any other suggestions or thoughts? Thank you
Hi Rebecca!! Thanks so much for tuning in!! We have passed your question along to Alicia and the team to help with! Watch this space for an update x
@@YourRidingSuccess Thank you! Also, I lunged him again today and he wouldn’t go at all kept carrying on kicking out and rearing..
Hi Rebecca! The problem you are having is that he is not going forward into the reins and he doesnt want to stay upright and pushing forward. Really important that you keep him forward infront of the whip so that he doesn't have a chance to stop and that when he starts to drift you catch him and correct before he stops. I would also check to rule out any discomfort or pain x
@@YourRidingSuccess ok thank you, I’ll keep persisting with him on the lunge and maybe he does have some discomfort there..might be why he’s resisting so much..thanks again 😌
❤️ this
Thank you x
This is very different from the ‘natural horsemanship’ method of ‘round yard’ work & from their ‘ground work’ on a long line.
BTW at 16:50 when Mo puts his nose right to the ground, that is him asking to finish & come into you & that you’re his alpha ….
Thanks for your comments! There are many ways to work with the horses, the main thing is that the horse understands the work and is happy in their work 💕
Your voide will help me and I want to thank you I have all the conference in ride ing my horse and we did good win I ride her but she kit out I did want her to kit out but she did
✨
@@YourRidingSuccess thank you how do you stop form kiting out win you are ride ing a horse thank you Nannette
Hi Alicia, thankyou for the fantastic videos and information. Could you please tell me what diameter you round yard is? It looks a good size.
Sorry Janelle we are not sure what size it is but will try and find out for you x
Great video!
Question about how you connect the lunge rein through the bit to the roller. Do you think that would work if you did not have a round yard?
So glad you enjoyed the video! Yes you can still do this even if you are lunging not in a round yard x
I am no where's near a professional, I've only trained one horse and he was a weanling and I learned how to train him from CZcams videos, but to give him a good clear 'walk' cue I had to start off by hunching my shoulders slightly and bending at the waist just a tiny bit to bring my energy down while saying 'walk' long and drawn out. It was a good visual cue for him and eventually I didn't have to bend at the waist anymore and then eventually all I had to do was lower my chin to my chest slightly. Now I only have to say 'walk' and he walks fine but he is a Quarter Horse and not super energetic like a thoroughbred. I did find the visual cue helped him calm and slow down almost immediately so I wonder if this guy would pick it up as easily? 🤔 love these videos and I really wish I had these when I was trying to train my guy 7 years ago!
The horses do pick up on rider body language for sure, Alicia does not highlight it in this video but she does use her body language to help the horse understand what is expected like a shorter sharper noise to go faster and a longer stead noise to bring him back and the direction her body is facing 🦄
