- Ready for today's OTTB episode on Mowgley! It's raw, it's real and it's his third time in the indoor arena! (only he decided today that he thinks it is his first!! 🤦🏼♀️😂😂😂)
He was ridden for about 20 minutes in total, and went from terrified of everything, forgetting how to steer, how to go AND really how to do anything TO using the entire arena, doing straight lines, circles... (even some leg yield). He did absolutely amazing!!!
There was no tricks to get him good in this ride. It was doing the basics and working up through the training scale.
Remember the notes that Alicia talks about in the beginning of this video, they are super important, when things don’t go to plan like this!

"He's not lazy, he's stuck." I needed to hear that. My OTTB has this issue and it's good to know that I just need to keep moving forward.

@Amanda - true! But notice she didn't force him to go near what was scaring him. I had an OTTB too & it's important that they know that you recognize what is scaring them. So many people STILL just try to force a horse thru their fear, some by using a crop or harsh yanks on the bit. So unevolved. They don't forget a human who does that.
„Believe in the horse“ is a lovely thing to say. It‘s something we as riders tend to forget sometimes. I love how positive you always are with your horses. In my opinion they often deserve way more praise then they usually get.

This is super helpful! I think it’s important for riders to remember it’s okay to take a step back if needed, to then go two steps forward. Your horse’s mental and physical health is more important than pushing them through a problem area.

I ♥️ that you are showing real life examples, courtesy of Mr. Mowgley. Humans regress at times, so why wouldn't we expect a horse can also? We have good & bad days & so do they. I also believe that by keeping Mowgley 'working' at the far end away from his fear ( new office) that after awhile, he started thinking "well this isn't too much fun up here. Maybe if I go further out, I can get a rest there because up here is too much work." So glad you recognized his concerns & fears. I believe that the only way to build a solid trust bond - is to hear & acknowledge their concerns & what they're trying to tell you. Great video Alicia.... & Mowgley 🌟!!!

I'm so glad you're emphasizing the importance of staying relaxed and keeping the horse moving. I see so many riders tense up and get paralyzed by fear, a difficult thing to overcome. I learned ( not in an easy way, green on green ) years ago from a very spooky horse about being relaxed and giving them confidence. It's a lesson that has served me well. I'm not a super rider but that has become my forte, especially out hacking. I give my horse confidence and trust she will work through anything.

This is so wonderful. I always tell my riders that the horse teaches us everything we need to know in LIFE. Anger and how to manage it. Patience when necessary. Forgiveness, we still hold fear, disappointment, they are over it and wondering what the problem is the next day. I used to do a one rein stop but found if they are high before I get on I leg yield them. It seems like an eternity but like you say, it was 5 mins!!! Then I get on after they release adrenaline and leg yield and change direction. Alicia I love how you teach. You are out there, the good bad and ugly. The way you explain each step is so perfect for beginners or seasoned riders. Thank you for your generous tile and knowledge.

You make dressage make sense. I remember having lessons and the instructor would tell me what to do so I'd try my best to do it but I never understood why so I just thought dressage was just something you do in the ring a bit like synchronized swimming, it looked pretty but didn't have real life benefits. You make me realise just how useful and practical it all is. Also I love how positive you.

This is so incredibly helpful to see. I ride a 20 year old ottb who sometimes has "off" days where things don't go as planned. I am so pleased to know to just carry on, calm, and patient and sticking with a plan works! All horses have good days and off days and we need to be able to respond in the correct way as caring, consistent riders. Thank you!!! 🐴❤️🐴

I had this same situation today in my lesson, out in the wind and my instructor talked me through it pretty much the same way as you demonstrated. I was sweating bullets but he came round and we got some cantering in as well. So proud of the horse and myself for not giving up and I learnt so much. 💪👏🙏🐴

So wonderful, I actually had to use most of these techniques on Tuesday. We just moved to our new home and Lem has two new friends. We took them out for a hack around the property and Lemme had a complete melt down. Hopping up and down, threatening to pop up. I was like hang on, I've got to get him thinking forward and with me. So we took about 10 minutes and did trot circles and serpentines. He relaxed and came back to me to the point I could easily ask for stretchy trot and feel comfortable. I can't say we had a complete calm hack but it definitely didn't take as long to get him back. Love the confidence and trust these exercises create between him and I. Thank you for sharing, it helps me to be brave and trust my instincts about mine and Lemme's journey. 😍😍🤩🤩

He is a really nice moving horse. He seems to be genuinely stiff in his movement but of course he is such a sweet horse and is only going to get better in the school.

Thank you for such an important video!! It really helps!! I have a few things I do not get to a 100%, though... First, how do you stop him falling out by adjusting your weight to the inside? Or did I get that wrong? I would really like to understand how you use the seat! And second, you mention that sometimes you have to take the inside rein out towards your knee to help him a little bit more. When and why is that? What do you achieve by it? Is he not soft enough in his inside and neck? Thank you again!

Hi Emma! Great questions! Firstly, with the weight in the saddle, watch this banana video which explains how the riders weight affects the horses body position czcams.com/video/bcrr9YrJdTE/video.html. When Alicia uses her inside rein it is to encourage his suppleness to the correct flexion which then in turn helps him connect into the bridle, in these moments Alicia is turning Mowgley onto a smaller circle to achieve the required suppleness in order to connect, so he needs some guidance to assist with this. With the specific aids, Alicia now has a Point of View camera which will assist with her showing her aids more clearly. Was there a specific movement you wanted to know the aids for? 💕

What shook me a few weeks ago was that I was actually working the horse in circles and serpentines when suddenly he raised his head and then bolted. Since then I've been so afraid that they're all just going to bolt or rear or spook really badly. It's affecting my ability to ride altogether :/

No question is silly! The difference is in the horses body, a horse that is supple but just needing a little more energy will not brace, get hollow in the back or be above the bit, whereas a horse that is not able to move freely because it is stuck in the body will show some form of tension ie not connected, tight in the back or body - and this is why they can not move freely in that moment ✨
Hey Alicia, do you have any tips on how you can tell if a horse is spooking out of fear or pain? My horse has recently become super super spooky at everything - extremely tense and looky even when just tied up for grooming in the stable. Under saddle is worse. I’m intentionally very very calm when working with her and genuinely don’t get frazzled, so I don’t think she’s feeding off of me. She is very respectful of my space, is obedient when I ask her to do something and stands to be mounted etc. What confuses me even more is that I did some desensitization the other day with a tarp and she didn’t even bat an eyelid 🤷♀️ (note she was diagnosed with kissing spines last month, so pain is a definite possibility but I want to make sure it isn’t a training issue that we can overcome.)

Any tips on how to handle a horse who cow kicks with her left rear leg when you ask her to trot? She’s been vet checked to rule out injury / pain. Once she’s in the gait, she’s good to go but the transition is a struggle.

In this particular case, it sounds like the horse is kick ing out with the same leg. Great questions! While Mowgley is getting used to hacking it might be more just small walks out after riding instead of days of only hacking, eventually it will be some days where he can hack instead of work but not just yet! Hi Julia, if you watch this video again you will see that in the beginning Mowgley is almost stopping completely and you can see that Alicia is just staying patient and moving his shoulders.

When they spook, are you leg yielding towards or away from the way the original direction they are spooking? So if they spook and move left do you leg yield left or right?
Great question - so you are actually leg yielding them towards the spook. If you are riding up a wall and the outside rein is the left rein and they see something to the left that is spooking them, you are going to turn his head slightly to the right so he is looking away from the spook, and then push him towards the spook - hope that helps!

Was this horse fully vetted with xrays of back & neck?? So many TB’s are prone to Kissing spine and have to wonder if the spooking comes from pain and not actually spooking
