    Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your workaround along with your abundant patience. Hopefully this will work out for now until Honda/Harman Kardon gets their act together. I'm sure you know this but, when creating waypoints in BaseCamp and/or MapSource it's important to zoom in "all the way" on the map, select the address/point that you're going to, then create the waypoint. I can't tell you how many times I didn't do this and the waypoint would be off in left field somewhere or a different address. It's so unbelievable that Harman Kardon hasn't had their Nav systems up and running 100% by now. Just look at the years they have been around...... Shame on them and even more so with Honda installing them on their flagship touring motorcycle. Sure makes you wonder what the engineers are doing within these companies. I do however feel that it will be worked out and hopefully sooner than later for you early adapters. As always....... Thanks again for your awesome advice and reviews of this wing! Ray

    The Honda Trip planner does leave a lot to be desired. But, after 18 years riding Harleys I recently left the darkside. So I did my own test and planned a short trip on the Harley Road Planner and uploaded it to my new DCT. Voila! Worked just as well as it does with my Harley and Garmin. Took me exactly where I wanted to go and hit all the waypoints. Intentionally didn't start navigating till I left my start point. Sure enough it kept wanting to turn me around until I went in and did a route edit and deleted the start point. It then took me to my next waypoint. You are right though. When you start the navigation it should ask you if you want to navigate to the start or get on with the route.

    Nice work as always. You are truly the #1 source for Honda GW tech and info. I got to hand it to you. If it was me It goes right back to the dealer. I am truly interested in all of your findings. I will be looking at a new touring bike to replace my 14 Victory Vision. Its between 2 bikes, the Yamaha venture and the new 18 Honda. I am not swayed either way yet as I only had a quick spin on both.

      If I do trade in my Vision it will be after the First Model year of the GW and Venture. I don't want to deal with being a test bench. My Vision runs amazing and love the rider room. The venture to me is closer to the Vision. I would hate to give up the performance Lloydz did plenty of work to my Vision that Neither the GW and venture can match. 122HP and 122 TQ to the rear wheel. I will wait for the updates to both bikes.

      I have had the same mods to my VV. Lloyds stuff installed by the Vic Shop. Mine tested 119 HP and 121 TQ. I'm in no hurry to change, I may switch from PCV to Maximus this year. Also considering the Radiantz LED tail lights,. I have not had the chance to ride either new model yet. Still winter here.

    Great price of deceive work to help understand the shortcomings of the Honda sat nav system. I use the Garmin Basecamp software when creating routes for the nav system as fitted to my 2015 BMW GS1200, always works flawlessly.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  Před 6 lety

      You know, the Garmin on my 2012 took GPX files directly from BaseCamp, but I have only gotten that to work once with the new 2018 Gold Wing. I read about GPS Babel on one of the Gold Wing forums or Facebook pages and researched it for myself and, so far, it has worked every time. Even Honda Trip Planner does not work well and can result in corrupted destination and waypoint addresses.

    • @jimnielsen4076
      @jimnielsen4076 Před 6 lety

      Michael, that makes sense as BMW's GPS is a Garmin unit.

    • @michaeljohnson-li5nn
      @michaeljohnson-li5nn Před 6 lety

      You are absolutely correct Jim; the BMW Satnav unit is a rebadged Garmin item. From what I can gather you cannot just fit a Garmin unit to the Satnav cradle on the bike. It has to be a unit supplied via BMW and `coded` in accordingly, obviously at a much inflated price! When I purchased my 2015 GS I did go for the factory Satnav 5, it is a nice piece of kit and interfaces very well with the BMW scroll wheel on the left handlebar. I have been told the new Satnav 6 has a much sharper screen and faster response time to commands.

    The Trip Planner is rounding to slightly less precise coordinates, but it is not significant. In the example given, the latitude difference is 0.000000007º, or about 0.031 inches - not enough to move your destination to a different street. More likely, the maps are faulty. No consumer level GPS is precise to 9 decimal places. Six foot accuracy is exceptional, 1/32" is totally out of reach.

    I am really surprised that the GPS is that lacking in general functionality for motorcycle use. The 2014 Harley GPS had that 8 waypoint limit and it took them a year to update the firmware to correct that. I use Garmin Basecamp so that I can choose the roads I want to travel on. Then I can sit back and listen to the turn by turn directions.

  • @LukeCausley

    Thanks for the video. I just picked up the 2018 Goldwing Tour. The Sat Nav is a lot to digest, coming from a Garmin unit. I have only used it a few times and dislike it less each day. With anything new or different, a learning curve can be frustrating.The screen brightness is waaaay better than my Garmin... Honda got that right. Google maps to create routes, then export to basecamp has been something I've done in the past. I'll try Babel too, thanks for the tip. I'd like it if Honda would add posted speed limits...like the Garmin. Or have I missed a setting to activate that?

    BobUK here. This may be a little late, but have a 2020 Bagger, and having followed your video/instruction re Basecamp route to Goldwing (very good they are too) I have a problem. When loaded route on Goldwing, route is fine, but via points from basecamp show as “alerting stopover” points, and cant get rid of them. Maybe you can help Thanks

    Cruiseman,
    I have a 2018 Goldwing. Your video is great, but how do you get the route to work? I have done everything exactly as you indicated, including successfully running the GPX file thru GPSBabel. I have a BaseCamp route that starts with a 2.5 mile STRAIGHT road to the first turn. During that stretch, the navi in the GL1800 is telling me to make right turns, left turns, and U-turns. It just goes downhill from there. Not even close to being functional! BTW, every waypoint between the first and the last are set not to alert. I have tried everything and cannot find anything that works on the 2018 GL1800 navi (including BaseCamp, Honda Trip Planner, and REVER). If it works for you, PLEASE tell me your secret! I have not found it. What map are you using in BaseCamp? What settings are you using on the GL1800 navi (shortest time, etc)? PLEASE HELP!

    Question after d/l both of these software programs and opening up the Garmin Base camp it wants maps which I don't have and seemly it appears you have to buy these from Garmin ? Or am I missing something here

    • @jimnielsen4076
      @jimnielsen4076 Před 6 lety

      I just loaded basecamp for the 1st time on a PC with no other Garmin software. When I zoomed in on the USA it already did have a map of major highways. Later using Garmin Express (free) I updated the software on a Garmin GPS. I also had a choice in that software under maps to add that GPS' maps to basecamp. Instead of buying a map just for use in basecamp Id buy a basic Garmin GPS, register with Garmin using their Garmin Express software & that will give you the option under MAPS to add its maps to basecamp. Then you have that inexpensive GPS to use in a car/truck, rental car...or sell it on Ebay.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  Před 6 lety

      This is another one of those things that I did years ago and don't recall the steps required. BUT, you should be able to register your Garmin on the Garmin website. Once you are registered and Garmin knows the map version you have on your Goldwing, I "think" there is then a way to have those maps installed in BaseCamp. When you select Maps from the menubar, it should contain the installed maps in your GPS unit (e.g. City Navigator North America NT 2012.1). You may need to refer to Garmin's online help for more details on how to do this. It may require using the SD Card from your Goldwing that holds the maps.

    • @jimnielsen4076
      @jimnielsen4076 Před 6 lety

      Cruiserman's is correct. You register a Garmin unit, plug in an already registered unit to your computer, or update the software in a Garmin and you get the option of installing the units maps on basecamp. All using Garmin Express which is very easy to use.

  • @helomech4410

    If you change the file extension from all caps (.GPX) to small letters (.gpx), the BaseCamp file will import into the Wing GPS without the need for all of that GPSBabel babel.

    • @cruisemansgarage

      @@cruisemansgarage Don’t bother. From what I'm reading, it seems the February 2020 Update to the Wing's Nav software broke it. Everyone who installed update 2 are saying they’re now unable to go directly from BaseCamp to Wing. I'm sure glad I stayed with update 1.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  Před 6 lety

      I just created the one file from scratch in Honda Trip Planner then exported the GPX.

    • @alanbowne6416
      @alanbowne6416 Před 6 lety

      Wonder if will work with the correct numbers.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  Před 6 lety

      The Honda Trip Planner crops the numbers, or rounds them up. There would be no way to correct the GPX file without knowing that the last 3 digits of the coordinates are. Honda Trip Planner simply does not work (in my tests). It may get you within a block or two of your destination, but it will not take you right to the address you input. Not sure why it is doing that.

    • @alanbowne6416
      @alanbowne6416 Před 6 lety

      I understand and it should not work like that. This needs to be fixed by Honda. Have you loaded the GPS with the converted file for Basecamp and is the address correct? Just trying to figure out if the GPS software only excepts the truncated coordinates.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  Před 6 lety

      I just meant that you showed what it looked like while it wasn't working. It didn't show the names of the waypoints, only the address, and the wrong address at that. I was curious as to what it looked like using this method.

    • @davidg.8745
      @davidg.8745 Před 4 lety

      My I right in saying you just need to copy the file from Babel to a drive and then install it into the Wing?

  • @grumpyolemann
    @grumpyolemann Před 6 lety

    I prefer to use Google Maps to plan a trip. Once I have it as I want it, I click on the URL line (command line) and copy it. Then go to www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input and paste the copied line into the URL box, then click convert. I output as a gpx.
    Then use Bable to clean it up. Way too much work for sure. Harmon Kardon needs a good web site for their gps units and get this product up to speed with a good old Garmin.
