  • This video features the igneous rock, with the trade-name, Granite Point Granite (using 360 degree photography). The Granite Point Quarry is now located underwater, upstream of the Granite Point Dam on the Snake River in Eastern Washington State. This sample was collected in the rock above the reservoir in the area of the original stone quarry. The location of the granite is the E ½ Sec. 13, and the SW ¼ of Sec. 14, T13N, R43E.
The Granite Point Quarry only has one structure surviving--but it is a significant structure. It is the original locks at Cascade Locks on the Columbia River (Cascade Locks, Oregon). The doors to the locks have been removed, but the granite walls for the locks remain. The Cascade Locks, were constructed between 1878-1896, and used to bypass the most hazardous rapids area on the lower Columbia River. This is obviously one of the oldest stone structures in the Pacific Northwest of the United States (although not in use). The historic locks became obsolete upon completion of the Bonneyville Dam and Locks (c. 1938). Parts of the original locks at Cascade Locks are submerged behind the Bonneyville Dam reservoir. Yes, it is a distinctive stone with those big feldspars! Too bad that more structures weren't made with this historic building stone.
