    It's established in the MCU that spells can continue after a person's death "You'll find it very difficult to remove a dead man's spell" Said the sorcerer supreme to squidward. Hela wasn't held by a spell, but by Odin actively keeping her at bay, his life force pushing against her. I don't think the spell was broken on Mjolnir, I think it was just a matter of raw strength.

      Yup, I also thought something like that. My thoughts went like:
      What is preventing Hela from wielding the hammer? Odin's Spell
      How can Odin create such a spell? Because he is a powerful God who knows how to make & break spells.
      Who else is a powerful God? Hela
      So I thought it is pretty much possible that she was able to overpower / break the spell Odin put on the hammer.
      Basically if Odin can create such spells, I don't see how Hela can't break them, seeing as they are both the same lifeforms.
      It's like how we humans create Stealth Aircraft to launch attacks in secrecy,
      but we also build ever better & more sensitive radio technology to intercept those of others.

    As a note, when Thor throws his hammer, unless he's fighting or doing something cool, he tends to keep his arm outstretched. I personally believe that not only is he waiting for the hammers return but also being a pushing force to propel the hammer forward. So it is very likely that hella is just stopping it. I think what reinforces this theory is the fact that both the hammer and hella's arm are shaking, implying that they are exerting force against eachother. Thor's arm is also shaking, making me think he is pushing against the hammer to try and gain leeway. Hella gripping the hammer and keeping it there is kinda thrown out the window because, tho she is very very strong, one can not simply grip a hammer with just a thumb. The force needed to hold it would case the said thumb to push it across the palm and make it fall off. Fly off? Fly passed? Hammer no on hand no more. And based on how her hand tenses when she breaks the hammer, it seems like she adjusted the hold so her pinky was on the other side so she could crush it. Just my thoughts tho. Bye bye and stay hydrated.

      As much as I think all the theories are interesting I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it’s most likely Hela both stopped and his holding the hammer with Odins spell still intact. This is because the scene is suppose to play a thematic role of “raising the stakes”, infantizing Thor and Loki in the face of overwhelming power that they can’t match. What better way of doing that then not only showing that Hela can overcome such enchantments through sheer power, but also destroying an artifact that the mcu has already established as the previous pinnacle. It undercuts the thematic message if hela is not overcoming the spell. This is further reinforced by the fact Hulk never directly fought Hela, the writers needed plausible deniability in a matchup but also they need his position as a powerful character maintained until a scene in the future where thanos infantizes the hulk in hand to hand thus similarly “raising the stakes”

    Thor’s powers do NOT live inside the Hammer. The Hammer is merely an object for him to funnel his power through. That is specifically explained in the MCU. When Cap wields the hammer, he doesn’t steal Thor’s powers from him. Thor still has his powers. This obvious in Ragnarok and Infinity War when he continues to use his powers without the hammer. Clearly the hammer is not the source of his powers. The ONLY time the hammer truly holds Thor’s powers is when he is unworthy of them and then the powers were stripped from him by Odin himself and placed in the hammer. The hammer only becomes a source of power when someone other than Thor wields it because only Thor is innately born with his powers.

      Well, as you just pointed out, the only time we see Thor actually use his powers without Mjolnir in his posession is during Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame...which, as this video speculates, all take place after Odin's death would have ended the enchantment on Mjolnir and Thor's power.
      Also as you said, Odin's enchantment stripped Thor of his powers and placed them in Mjolnir.
      Cap using Thor's power against Thanos wouldn't have affected the present Thor because, as explained in the video, that hammer was taken from the past when the enchantment would still be in effect. So the power Cap is using would be the power of Dark World Thor, not present Endgame Thor.
      Also also, the MCU never explicitly details the relationship between Mjolnir and Thor's powers. The most we get is a sarcastic quip from Odin: "Are you Thor, god of hammers?"

      Indeed; however, I would like to point out that this isn't proof that she could have wielded the hammer. Thor is the one keeping the hammer in place by trying to call it back. But Hela is able to simply keep it in place with her own strength. She certainly doesn't actually MOVE it anywhere. And the hammer doesn't stop people from GRABBING it. It stops people from MOVING it.

      If you look at the scene in Endgame where Spidey catches the hammer with his web, it carries him be a use he can't control it. Using that same logic, the hammer would pull Hela if she wasn't able to hold it in place. Therefore she is clearly holding it place from going back to Thor.

    • @PhilBagels
      @PhilBagels Před 3 lety +10

      @@kylecarter1599 I think that's because she's powerful enough to stop it, not that she is "worthy", or that the spell is lifted. I think the SCB were right the first time. Other people get hit with the hammer, and if they're tough enough, the hammer doesn't go through them - it stops or is deflected. Just like in Avengers 1 - the hammer is stopped by Cap's shield. It does not mean the shield is worthy. Any more than the coffee table in Avengers 2 is worthy.
      I see no reason to think that the spell is lifted simply because it's the hammer from the past. Either way, Odin is still dead, so if being dead means his spell is no longer in effect, why would the "other" hammer still have the spell in effect?
      Note also that the spell never says, "No one who is unworthy may lift this hammer." It says, "Whoever holds this hammer - if he be worthy - shall possess the power of Thor." So theoretically, anyone powerful enough might have been able to lift the hammer, but not being worthy, they wouldn't gain the power of Thor. Clearly, there's a bit more to it than that, because you would think that Hulk would be strong enough to lift it by himself (not being worthy, and so not gaining Thor's power), or Ironman and War Machine together might otherwise also have been able to lift it (but still not gain Thor's power). And then Vision lifted it easily - but we never see if he gained any of Thor's power.
      So to make a fairly simple speculation: Perhaps any sufficiently strong Asgardian can lift it (Loki is neither especially strong, nor Asgardian), and anyone Worthy can wield it and gain the power of Thor. Note that Hela never actually wields the hammer - she simply holds it in place, like the coffee table did, or the hook on the wall in Thor 2.
      After all, nothing says that Odin's spell can't be overcome by sufficient power. Even the Infinity Stones have their limits.

    I dunno, I still think she's stopping the hammer. Yes, Thor is definitely trying to pull the hammer back but that doesn't mean she caught the hammer itself, but that she simply grabs onto the end of it AFTER she stops it. Just because she grabs it doesn't mean she's holding it. If she grips the end just as Thor is trying to pull it back, then it would naturally stay in place since she's stronger than him.
    The important part here is that, despite being stronger than Thor, she does not MOVE the hammer at all. She just keeps it in place as she destroys it.
    Here's what I think. Thor throws the hammer, Hela stops it. Her arm even moves back as she stops it. But then Thor tries to call it back. The hammer begins to move back toward Thor, but Hela extends her arm to go with it, and gets a solid grip on the end of it. And there it hangs. Rather than release the hammer and allow Thor to regain it, she simply destroys it there. Whereas if she were actually able to wield the hammer herself, I don't know why she wouldn't demonstrate her superiority by moving it against his will, which seems more in line with her character imo.

    She caught the hammer, she didn't wield it. Whether it was hers or not before Thor (even if it was I doubt it had the worthy enchantment, I think Odin put that in after the fact)it doesnt really matter, because she wasn't holding it by the handle and wielding it, she was just holding back its force. Thor has used Mjolnir's magical "weight" before against enemies to immobilize them, but that just goes to show that Hela was his strongest enemy to date as her own power matched or exceeded Mjolnir's force. That's why it was also shaking and struggling against her in her hand. It did not calmly surrender to her like Vision and Cap. I feel like this was a straightforward inference during the movie, not sure why people are so confused.

    I just assumed that the enchantment that Odin put on the hammer is limited in strength and Hela is stronger then Odin so the enchantment wouldn't apply to her since she's stronger then the enchantment on the hammer. Also if we apply comics logic you don't need to be a good person to lift the hammer so she could just be worthy which I would be fine with.

    Unfortunately I can confirm without doubt, because I wrote this film, she did NOT catch it. Anytime we made someone pick up the hammer you'll note we have the strap fall under gravity. When she stops it like a wall, the strap stays out because it's still under force pushing towards her. It was a subtle detail and I'm honestly surprised no one caught it.

    I was expecting a little more convincing but you didn’t convince me at all. I personally feel the worthy fiction still applied she was just stopping that’s why it was shaking still to imply it was still moving and not being held. Whether Thor was pushing or pulling it. She still was either holding it off or keeping it from going back to him. That’s my personal stance though. Guess we’ll find out for sure in love and thunder when the hammer is repaired. Either way

    • @PhilBagels
      @PhilBagels Před 3 lety

      Agreed. I think they had it right the first time. Odin's spell is still in effect. There's no reason it would stop affecting this hammer, but would still affect the one brought from the past. Either way, Odin is still dead at the time the hammer is being used.
      Hela stopped the hammer because she's hella powerful, not because she's worthy, not because the spell is broken.
      Just because there's a spell in place doesn't mean that spell can't be overpowered by raw power.
      Note also that she never actually wields the hammer, nor even moves it. The coffee table in Avengers 2 held the hammer without moving it also. As did the hook on the wall in Thor 2.
      That seems to me to be the simplest explanation. Ockham's Razor. (Ockham's Hammer?)

    • @darkamora5123
      @darkamora5123 Před 3 lety

      @@PhilBagels Or since she is the eldest of Odin's children, she inherited his power when he died. As such SHE was the source of the worthiness enchantment, and could stop it anyway she liked, since she could depower that enchantment (the returning, and other powers were the result of the dwarven magic used in its creation). When she died at the hands of Surtur the power devolved to Thor, and it was his belief that it should be enchanted that maintained the enchantment in Endgame on the Mjolnir from the past.

    And she has two lovely siblings, Fenrir the wolf, and the world serpent (Jörmungandr). Three lovely children who Loki was pregnant. Confused yet?

    You can see by the way the leather loop is sticking straight out it is still “in flight” and her arm shakes like she is pushing on it. Also if she could hold it, the directors would have made it more noticeable to point out that she could hold the hammer. She would have caught it and mocked Thor by playing with it before she destroyed it.

    The important part is the string handle, which is horizontal as the hammer is in her hand. This was confusing as the hammer's momentum had stopped, so the string should have dropped. It all made sense when you mentioned Thor was trying to pull the hammer back though... which would explain why the string is horizontal, and why the hammer isn't going anywhere... Because she's HOLDING it, not stopping it.

    I'm sorry: Odin's spell is important but not for the reason you think. Odin places the spell on who he deems worthy. If someone is worthy from Odins POV then they will be able to left it. If not they won't. Also, any other person able to hold the hammer is able to hold it steady while Hela still has it vibrating. She's definitely impeding it not holding it. It's kind of like catching a football or baseball, that's just how you're going to instinctively hold it. The spell may have broken but she's not catching it in that moment

    • @gabbylikeskicks

      Thor was pulling it, the same time Hella was grabbing hold of it. That's probably why it was vibrating. Notice in the shown clip, even Thor's raised arm was also vibrating?
      With the enchantment gone, Mjolnir's sentience came back and remembered Hella, who was its past owner.
