Thank you for allowing us to be part of your adventures.
Our pleasure!
There’s only one place you can go from Mozart to poop in the space of 15 minutes or so - Sailing Seabird! 😂 Kudos to you two, it’s coming along terrifically even though it may seem like a hard slog at times but all your efforts will pay off in spades. Well done and thanks ;) Geoff
Thanks for the encouragement, Geoff.
Slow and steady.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Awesome job guys!! Please don’t get frustrated with the pace of things. My older brother is a master craftsman with 50 years of experience and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve kicked myself at how slow I am compared to him. The finish product is usually equal or better but it takes me so much longer 😢‼️
He just shrugs and laughs a bit at his little brother .
You guys are doing your homework and it’ll look amazing and more importantly it will be safe and functional !!
All the best !
About your experimenting with Epoxy onto "unknow" foams: the with and grey stuff is Styrofoam like Stuart already estimated, the yellow-ish and the orange stuff is Polyurethan. Epoxy works on all of them without problems (as you already found out). If you need some stuff with is structurally NOT sound you can use Styrofoam as a base (f.e. for a selfbuild fridge/freezer), but remember: if you want to cover that areas with solvent-based coats (f.e. Gelcoat or Paint) they have to be covered completly with epoxy first because Styrofam will be destroyed by the solvents used in paints (also "Water"-based paints contain solvents, in this case they are alkohols). If you use Epoxy on PU-Foams (for parts that need to be structurally sound) you can work partially and than cover the whole piece with solvent-based paints ( ... primers, puttys, fillers ...) later because PU-Foams can handle solvents (they even "like" it). I'm a automotive painter, so you can trust these informations. Good luck with your projects and best regards from Berlin, Germany
Thank you for the advice.
We found an even better product for the lid.
It will all make sense...
Cheers for watching 🙂
Thank you so much for you videos! I‘m nearly house- and bedbound, so I myself can’t do such projects, but I can live vicariously through you. So thank you!
We are so happy you enjoy them.
Cheers for watching 🙂
That bilge is going to be the most solid and certainly the prettiest bilge of the whole marina! I think you are doing an amazing job in this boat. Good to see you are having fun while working! Some of your comments were absolutely hilarious. Love watching you guys.
Fingers crossed!
A nice clean bilge is a thing of dreams.
Cheers for watching 🙂
I like the music in the beginning😊.
How not to! It’s Mozart 🎶🎼🎵
Styrofoam will melt with polyester or vinyl ester resin, but not with polyurethane or epoxy. Polyisocyanurate (Celotex) and polyurethane foam is stronger than expanded polystyrene. Surfboards are usually made from polyurathane foam in the core.
Tested it and the epoxy stuck.
But, we won't be using it. Not the right foam for the job, more of a closed cell needed.
Cheers for watching 🙂
19:55 hahahaajajajaaahaaha Stew, what he meant to say was happy international women's appreciation day
💪💫
Totally!
Cheers for watching 🙂
the fixing is the fun part...its because a lot of us dream of doing it
The dream and the reality are very far part.
I too dreamt of fixing up an old sail boat...
Cheers for watching 🙂
Love your patching job. (We’ll be doing the same thing on a couple of holes in our boat, this weekend. Grinding, cutting discs of cloth, and epoxy. Planning on using a small piece of plastic pipe to drape the cloth over, then apply to the boat like a pie crust on a rolling pin. 😂) We’re so very glad you stayed on the boat this winter. 😎🥰❤️❤️❤️🥰😎
Hiya. How are you keeping?
It's ok this winter. Got a bit done.
Horrible weekend. Heavy winds and rain. Might try to do a bit more on the bilge. Need to see how much water came in the through the hatch.
Fixing the seacock holes isn't too bad, just the fairing afterwards.
Have a great weekend on the boat. Love the photos you sent.
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabird 😎❤️
Love the way the internal of the boat is repair/workshop, great project and, I continue to wish you well with it! Good job on bilges, by the way. Good luck!🤞🤞🤞
Thank you very much!
Rain water😮 that’s how many boats sink on the hard. Really nice work guys!
So true!
Seen it time and time again.
That's how we have all these issues.
Cheers for watching 🙂
It's Friday and we get to see what Stewart & Marina have been doing.. you're getting somewhere and you're doing it right.. you get the floor put in and Stew you're going to have to dance with Marina to celebrate
We dance all the time! Some time together... 😅😂🤣
Cheers for watching 🙂
Epoxy typically does not melt Styrofoam. Polyester, on the other hand, does melt it.
I knew something melted, something...
I'm sure it's fit for purpose.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Your getting there little by little bit by bit, your both doing a good job, and yes you are actually getting somewhere you have made good progress. Cheers.
Thank you for the encouragement.
Little and often...
Cheers for watching 🙂
4 weeks and counting - I'm sure you'll be ready to move in
We'll see.
50/50
No point stressing it.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Great to see you are making such good progress.. As far as bilges are concerned you are always going to get water in. Condensation . rain if you leave a hatch open. List goes on. I see you seem to be filling all the possibilities for having a decent sump to pump it out of. Not so much of a problem on a motor cruiser, but on a yacht which tips over a lot a real issue and that’s because you can end up with a gallon or two in bad weather in you kitchen draws, bunk storage and anywhere else you don’t want bilge water to be. On Seabird I would suggest a sump with a capacity of at least 8 to 10 liters. However pretty you make it doesn’t matter if you can’t effectively pump it out. Good luck with your plan to get back living aboard.
The bilge sump is a very big deal, one I've been looking at for a while. Trying to think of a suitable place for pumps and strum boxes.
Access is the key.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Yay, looks like you two are back to normal again! Had a really good laugh with this one! 😂
Question: you're now working with epoxy+fibre cloth to fill big holes needing thickness. Have you considered polyester+mat for this? Cheaper, faster and probably the same as what the original hull is made of. You can still finish up with epoxy afterwards to make it watertight.
I envy your journey. I used to be like the two of you. I still am a nomad. I loved sailing around the Caribbean years ago. I enjoyed being on an old sail boat with fun people. Thank you for sharing your adventures. If you are ever on the Adriatic coast of Italy, I hope you will connect. Would love to meet you both. Katie from Italy
But I bet you have some great stories to tell...
We are grateful that you enjoy our videos.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Marina & Stu:
You've definitely become really good with Fiberglass!!
Your boat is getting in better shape day after day.
Thank you for sharing with us!!
🙌🏻

Our pleasure!
We're so glad you enjoy it.
Cheers for watching 🙂
I always enjoy your shows! this week I laughed all the way through......Who said hard work could be fun?
😂😂😂 Cheers! We always try to have a laugh whilst working.
Stu does remind me of a young version of Steptoe out of Steptoe&Son in his man cave/store. looking good guys
I am a keen fan of Steptoe and Son. I wish I had a bath on wheels.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Well done Stu and Marina. It’s coming along nicely. I have followed you both from the beginning. It’s just getting better and better. Good luck from Australia
Awesome, thank you!
Slowly getting there.
The idea of a floor is slowly becoming a reality.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Call that mini bulkhead across the bilge a ‘Floor’ and you will be sweet. Keep up the good work, bit by glorious bit you will succeed.
Thanks Pete!! We hope so 🤞🏼😃
You have made tremendous progress! A lot of the grunt work is behind you, and it’s so rewarding when you begin finish coats of varnish and paint. I miss the latter from my youth, but not the grunt work! 😊
Yes! Thank you!
Still a long way to go.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Stew and Marina the boat progress is really good. Well done to you both. Have really enjoyed watching you fix this boat up. Have a safe week and don’t forget to take time to enjoy some quality time off together away from the boat. Enjoy a meal or a drink at the pub. Until next week. Cheers 🥂

Oxalic acid will remove the black staining from the wood laths. Looks like oak from the grain. Probably American white oak.
Some of the wood has gone. Only about 4 out of 22 (from memory)
Found more wood to do some repairs.
Looking forward to varnishing them.
Nearly all sanded...
Cheers for watching 🙂
It has been so amazing following your journey, thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ If you’re ever in Poole Harbour do say hi 👋
We are so happy that people enjoy our videos.
We are just fixing up an old boat.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Wow, sailboat restoration is a big project isn't it? Great work and lots of patience you two have. ciao geo
Loads jobs, you're right about that.
We'll get there.
Cheers for watching 🙂
You guys are definitely getting somewhere!!! It is coming along pretty quickly now! The progress is amazing!!!
We don't feel the same.
It's an on going slog...
Cheers for watching 🙂
teasing marina again😉
Got to have a bit of banter at work.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Another great video guys, four weeks and you'll have your own bedroom, kitchen, and more importantly floor, manly because you've got no choice lol. The floor will be the best part, this will allow you to move around at greater speed thus getting things done quickly. Thank you for sharing your life with us, it is appreciated.
The dream of a floor.
It will come.
Cheers for watching 🙂
I am amazed your still a live stew lol 😂
It's because I have cat like reflexes.
Cheers for watching 🙂
5:17 : Stu : "Meh, could be worse". 😆
Can always be worse.
Hope you're well.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Hello, This is a second comment I tried to make earlier and I guess didn't send it. Are you going to get the hatch sealed up watertight so you don't get your new floor wet? Ok, keep up the good work and have fun. ciao. geo
Gotta have faith...
I think that's one of life's motos.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Doing great guys! Playing in the bilge is very interesting! And the day of your first poop inside the boat will be a great one, indeed!
Playing boat builder is a great pastime.
Cheers for watching 🙂
A little night music is perfect
Helps you work a bit hard.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Keep going guys and looking forward to seeing you both aboard in your own boat and not paying rent in the other boat 😅
Us too!
Soon, very soon.
Hopefully.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Enjoy your videos and watching your good work . One step at a time and you will get there best wishes. 😊
Top banana!
Thanks.
Cheers for watching 🙂
May I suggest that you consider a vapour barrier on the warm side of the insulation that should help reduce condensation against a cold hull. Black tar paper might look nice showing through the gaps between the batons.
Hiya, hope you're well.
Never looked at a vapour barrier.
We have armaflex, would this be OK? Plus we'll seal the wood...
What do you think?
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabirdproviding vapour cannot pass through to the cold side of the insulation then you should be free of condensation. Armaflex is closed cell foam I think isn’t it? Maybe just taping joints with builders metallic tape? Go well!
Marina & Stu: This is the best episode bar none, fiberglass, bilge prep, you guys are certainly turning Seabird into a master piece on the water. Can't help but appreciate your knowledge and expertise on this massive project. Happy bin hunting!
Thank you for the vote of confidence.
Hopefully you're right.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Looking good on the progress!
Thanks!
Cheers for watching 🙂
Keep up the good work 💪🏻
We'll try. Something about it being a marathon not a sprint.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Epoxy will NOT melt polystyrene. Only resins with styrene in them will, such as polyester
I honestly didn't know until much little experiment. I saw a video years and now realise it must have been polyester resin.
At least we now know.
Plus I don't think I need the polystyrene, found something better.
Cheers for watching 🙂
another great vid as always❤
Thanks, We're glad you enjoy it.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Good effort this week Team Seabird. Thanks for the greetings. ❤❤❤
Hello!
Glad you enjoyed the video ❤️
Cheers for watching 🙂
Excellent, thanks 🎉
Thank you.
Cheers for watching 🙂
GREAT VLOG!!
Glad you enjoy.
Cheers for watching 🙂
That's the best ironing board work table I've ever seen. If we are on a sinking boat with you & stranded on a deserted island, I would help save you two first to increase my chance of survival ❤👍
Thanks, hopefully we'll find a cashe of rum.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Like your video. Looked it twice :-) Here to cold for epoxy so i removed my pulpit for new LED nav lights. Pull cables was kind of horror :-) :-) Keep on going! ... and i dont want to talk about screws ...
Nuts and bolts is a standard conversation around here 🤣
Thanks for the encouragement.
Cheers for watching 🙂
I love Stewart's optimism! ""It will be fine,,,,, Or it will leek". 😆😆😆
Blind faith and optimism...
Cheers for watching 🙂
Another great episode. A lot of work, keep it up.....
Thanks, will do!
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabird every week....love you guys....
⛵️ ⛵️ ⛵️ Phil...
Hey Phil!!! ⛵️
Love your stories
Thank you.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Would it make any sense to abandon all other work on your boat in order to focus on sealing all the leaks intrusion points, including the companionway hatches, hardware, and anchor locker? I don't see much gain in spending time on the outside when you need to live inside.
We totally agree.
Got two leaks and the stanchions atm that we're dealing with.
Cheers for watching 🙂
My boat is as big as your bilge 😂 keep going you’re doing great 👍🏻
The bilge is not that big... 😂🤣😅
Cheers for watching 🙂
Nice video, as usual !
Glad you enjoyed, a lot to come...
Cheers for watching 🙂
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your generosity.
It goes a long way.
Cheers for watching 🙂
More glass work, need to see some sanding now lol! Keep going Stu and Marina, not long before you move back in. Itll be good to be working on it from wake up I guess. Good luck guys - but one thing we don't have to see you doing the poop in the new toilet, we are good for that thanks! We will believe you lol!
We are a very long way off using the facilities. But! On that day we'll be so proud of our achievements. 😂🤣😅
Cheers for watching 🙂
Yeah thats what i like
Slowly slowly but surely moving forward
Great job
Same here.
Moving forward is a reward from work put in. Little and often...
Cheers for watching 🙂
All your hard work and love for yourselves and your boat will make it a success
We really hope so.
Cheers for watching 🙂
you guys are pros!!!!! really, nice job!
I wouldn't go that far.
We're just having a go.
Cheers for watching 🙂
10/10 thanks for the video guys!!
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Hello Marina and Stu. To move back in will you install the new floor and fix the bedroom?
That's the basic plan.
Hopefully make a start on the galley too.
Once the floor is down, I'm sure things will speed up.
Famous last words.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Excellent progress, well done!
Thank you!
Cheers for watching 🙂
First yeahhhh
Yayyyy 🥇
@@SailingSeabird do I get a prize? Lol
Everyone needs a goal…. When we can poop in the boat is a great one for a milestone💩🤣🤣
The music while sanding may seem appropriate to you because of the rhythm. However, Mozart would turn in his grave :-), because it is "The Little Night Music", which is actually a serenade that was played at cheerful evening festivities. 🤣🤣
What is more cheerful than sanding and fibreglassing your dream boat/home. 😅 Hopefully he doesn’t get offended… The music was too good to not use it…
@@SailingSeabirdI would say he will survive it... but that doesn't really fit since he's been dead for more than 230 years now. 🤣
Hi again, what is that big white thing inside a "cage" outside where you were sanding the slats? Thanks, geo
That’s a cube for waste water from the boat as you aren’t allowed to let it go into the ground. They don’t need it yet but will do when they move back onboard.
@@robertscott2007 Thanks for the info. geo
😊😊😊
😅😂🤣
Cheers for watching 🙂
Do it right, do it once.
Hopefully...
We are trying.
Cheers for watching 🙂
All of that unsealed plywood needs a coat of epoxy to water seal it so it doesn't degrade!
That’s exactly what we’re doing. Originally it was built with unsealed wood but we thought we’ll epoxy it
Gel coat the bilge or paint with 2 part epoxy paint. Which is better?
We have gelcoat...
So we'll try that first and take it from there.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Sure there's wind inside
Oh yeah.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Gel coat don’t stick to epoxy
Tried and tested...
Everyone says it can't be done, but it can.
There's a great episode on boat works today, going through the process.
But we'll see.
It's only for the bilge.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Please don't use Styrofoam for filling any voids on the boat. As it is hygroscopic it will suck water like a swamp. Even if covered with Epoxy. EP is not entirely watertight and the seams will crack over time. Styrofoam will rott when humid. Use closed cell foam instead or boat building foam at least. No need to use thickened EP with Fibreglass though, rolled thin enough it won't run down even on vertical surfaces. Important is cleaning the surfaces with pure alcohol (or badly health dangerous Acetone) before glassing for good adherence to the old surface. Even on new surfaces I'd always clean them. And the overlaps should be larger, no need to build up the entire thickness and put small patches on the next hole, better overlaps will be possible when the entire surface is done in one go. And a lot of work can be safed as well.
You are so right about the Styrofoam.
Tbh, it was just the first bit of foam I found.
Since then, I've found better materials.
Cheers for watching 🙂
If you want a decent first shite, I can whip you up some spicy fried rice :P Anyway! Great progress :)
It's so spicy!
Hope you're well.
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabird I'm fine, my wallet hates me, but the motorboat has new goodies so I think that balances it all out! :D
Niceee
sir, 40 layers xD i doubt the hull is about 40 mill thick hahahaha each layer u see there is a bit larger than your finger, its bc u sanded in a angle, its not so much about layers, layers depends on how many g/sqm fiberglass u use, for example when we make boats here we use a spray gun wich means theres no layers and its totally fine. example 300g/m2 comes out at 0,8mm thick fully saturated
Interesting point.
Thanks for the advice.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Bilge over trouble wayers
Classic 😅😂🤣
Cheers for watching 🙂
Make sure your wills and life insurances are up-to-date before taking that boat out of sight of land !
Love your optimism… 😂😂😂 We’re going to be fine
You should not do your mast step in wood but with G10 instead
We are thinking of fibreglassing a big lump in the shape of the mast interior.
Cheers for watching 🙂
😄😄😄👍👍👍

Thing about Spanish women is when they angry and telling you off in Spanish it sounds so damn hot 😊
Love you guys ,thanks for the story.

The mirror sunglasses are the worst!
The mirror sunglasses look cool. And a little quirky. What's not to like??
Those are my work sunnies.
My eyes really are super sensitive.
I'll be squinting even worse...
But I'll try.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Maaaate...”floors” not “ribs”😉....comeon...
What's in a name..? 😅😂🤣
I'll try to use the correct terms.
Cheers for watching 🙂
You only use thickened epoxy to stick your fibreglass mat to vertical and overhead surfaces then you wetout with resin! Please try to watch some how to epoxy videos to not do this kind of foolish thing! 😊
Hi Jack! We just wanted to fill some deeps because otherwise the fibreglass didn’t sit right and would create bubbles. Instead of waiting for the filler to go off and then fibreglass we did it all at once. Still learning though 😅🤷🏻♀️
One urgent advice: don’t wear sunglasses during filming! It is impolite and not done!
It's to protect my pretty blue eyes.
😅😂🤣
Cheers for watching 🙂
Stay cool
Love the channel
I saw someone made a comment about your mast step in G10. What does that mean? ciao. geo
I think G10 is a fibreglass board...
We plan to make the mast foot out of fibreglass. We'll try and see how it turns out.
Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabirdYou are much better off to use G10 as the base as it will be far stronger than your hand layup 😊 Remember that that small area is taking all the pressure of the whole rig ! It Will be a wet area so Avoid having any wood there ! Unless it is an extremely dense rot resistant wood .
