    A couple of things; Pressurized alcohol stoves explode. Those are not really made anymore. Traditional alcohol stoves which use a canister system are fine for weekend sailing provided you understand the dangers of alcohol. They do make small gimballed stoves that utilize the small LPG cannisters and can cook one pot. Those are fine too. True LPG systems have regulations around their installation that really must be heeded for safety. LPG is heavier than air and thus can cause a boat to explode if not done properly. Alberg 30s are tanks. Slow and strong. I would check out Sail Life's You Tube channel as Mads is an expert at refits and resurrecting's boats. There probably is a way to switch to a outboard, but if you want to sail far you will need an engine wit plenty of fuel. When your boat was built, it was designed for the engine to be something to get you to and from the dock, not really crossing from Florida to the Bahamas if needed. A new and reliable engine will cost you, but I consider it essential safety equipment. First thing is to make the boat dry, Get a moisture meter, go to the boat in a heavy rain and look for leaks. Windows need butyl tape and/or silicone. It is one of the few places on the boat you want to use silicon. Lastly, if you want to learn sailing fast, racers always need deck monkey's and crew. Volunteer for Wed night beer can racing. It is a great way to learn as racers will push their boats and you will gain a quick understanding of how things work on a boat, what they are capable of, and prepare you for difficult conditions. Fairwinds and Following Seas.

      I love this advice! I'll keep this in mind, I know these stoves can explode, but I'm not sure what to do with it, most people are saying to keep it and just make sure it's in good condition. I have butyl tape and new windows I just need to install them. I'll get a moisture meter and go over it with a fine-tooth comb to be sure!

    The reality of the situation is that you may be better off to spent $5,000 on a working boat than to attempt to refubish a virtual derelict.
    Presently we have an Endeavor 32 in Milwaukee offered for $6,000. with a running diesel engine, roller fulling, etc. If I wasn't so geriatric, I'd be off to the East coast through the Erie Canal.

      And there is always enough projects and maintenance on a working boat, let alone restoring one. But I understand the attraction of restoring something like this. But, being older and wiser, and also running out of time, I content myself with purchasing a good condition well-maintained working boat and maintaining it and doing little personal improvements on the boat. And right now, there are many many reasonably priced well maintained fully equipped boats available, as the younger generations are not into sailing for the most part.

    Good you have cheap storage at your dad's place. A working inboard would be essential if you are learning to sail. Take your time to assess the condition of the balsa-cored deck before throwing too much effort and money in. If the deck is OK, the basics like the watertightness of the hull to deck joint, condition of throughulls, chainplates, condition of bulkhead tabbing to the hull (there has been water in the boat)and condition of the rudder (these can fail on the alberg 30) worth checking out before going anywhere near the water. engine and sterngear are more expensive undertakings once the basics of the hull and structure are ok. A wind scoop over the forehatch to suck hot air out will cool things off. Propane and gasoline both really dangerous in boats. Study up on what is required of those installations to minimize the chance of exploding the project and yourself. Don't rush into interior fitout either until you are satisfied that the bones really are good.

    • @RoyalColorSails
      @RoyalColorSails  Před měsícem

      Ive gone over every inch of the hull on the outside with a screwdriver and tapped. Hull and deck are solid, The chain plates has already been reenforced with larger hardware, other than needing to finish the prop shaft through hole and repaint the deck her bones look solid.
