    So, you're putting those drains below the water line. So, unwise.

    • @Christopher-298
      @Christopher-298 Před 6 hodinami

      Nope! It's perfectly acceptable, normal practice and often done that way for a very good reason. The correct location of skin fittings for cockpit drains is dictated by a number of factors. Those factors include the height of the cockpit sole above the waterline and the maximum anticipated heel angle of the vessel. Bear in mind while reading this, that the proper functioning of cockpit drains depend on gravity - and gravity will only let water flow "downhill". Now, if the cockpit sole is close to the waterline, then placing the skin fittings above the waterline can make it impossible to maintain a "downhill" flow through the hoses to the skin fittings when the yacht is heeled. To explain in more detail: if the skin fittings are too high up the hull, the drain hoses will slope the wrong way when the yacht is heeled, causing water to flow INTO the cockpit instead of OUT of it. Simple geometry during the design stage is generally used to establish where the cockpit drain skin fittings should be located - and it is frequently NOT above the waterline. Like it or not, some skin fittings have to go below the waterline and that is exactly why seacocks were invented!

    For all you through haul nah sayers this is a center cockpit. They did it correctly when on a heal it will drain correctly. They ran the lines the correct way. It’s a center cockpit. No they could have done it above waterline but a freaking hose you would be dodging heading to aft. Some people’s kids.

Not sure that the time spent polishing that SS is time well spent, I assume they will be drilled and welded to the frame, they will need to be polished again perhaps.

  • @brians628
    @brians628 Před dnem

    The cockpit drains could be tied together with a near horizontal PVC pipe, then use only one down pipe, maybe attached to the same drain as the sinks or shower. Having it under the waterline, it will always have a foot of water in it, not including the extra pressure of water for when you are moving! Lots of good work going on there, nice to see it getting nicer and nicer!

    Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the thru hulls for your cockpit drains REALLY should be above the waterline. You could tie them together through a single thru hull. Those look like 1.25" (32mm) drains. A 2" (~50mm) thru hull would handle both drains.

      Yes - that's mahogany. Or at least "mahogany" because the pale colour and grain pattern suggests it might be a relatively fast growing African sub-species. I used something similar under the loo pedestal on my own boat: 10mm ply faced with 2mm stainless steel plate, the two components bonded together with West epoxy. Faced it with stainless because it looks smart, plus it's hygienic - it can be scrubbed and disinfected without damaging any varnish!

    • @Christopher-298
      @Christopher-298 Před 5 hodinami

      That's very good advice from Johnhewett2525 - he's absolutely right. An epoxy finish on timber resists knocks and abrasions and looks great when first applied - but it slowly degrades in direct sunlight. After a while the epoxy will start to look milky and may eventually turn semi-opaque. To slow down the degradation, give the epoxy a couple of days to properly cure, then very lightly rub it down with fine grit wet and dry, clean off the dust and apply at least two coats of good quality marine grade varnish. My preference for that particular job is "Epifane's clear" (a beautiful Dutch varnish). A laminated tiller that I built in 2020 received that treatment - four coats of top quality varnish over the epoxy - and four years later the high gloss finish is still perfectly clear and looks like wet glass.

    An idea of mine, (old experienced sxperimental mechanic) when it comes to cutting out squares of a given structure. DON'T try to drill a hole for the saw NEXT to the edge that you wanna create. Let there be be a bit of a distance and cut it right with the saw. Use the drill just to have a starting polnt for your saw.. It won't cost more than a few seconds and makes the job a lot easier.

    Regarding your cockpit drains... I should perhaps qualify the following opinion by mentioning that nearly half a century of professional experience, both at sea and in the design and fitting out of small commercial vessels and ocean going sailing boats, allows me to assure you that your cockpit drains will be absolutely fine as they are. In more detail... The answer to the question of whether or not to cross over the drain hoses varies from boat to boat. The question is resolved by looking carefully at a transverse section of the yacht in way of the cockpit, and at that section examining the relationship between the height of the heeled cockpit sole (i.e. the cockpit "floor") above the heeled waterline. Incidentally, the foregoing examination of the geometrical relationship usually only becomes a critical consideration on small yachts - when (a) the cockpit sole is close to the waterline even when the vessel is on an even keel and (b) the drain hoses exit the vessel close to, or above, the waterline. In your case, however, as your drain hoses drop almost vertically from the cockpit to the skin fittings, the foregoing considerations do not apply. Similarly - because of the near vertical fall of your hoses - there is nothing to be gained by crossing the hoses over (port to starboard and vice-versa). With that in mind, I would strongly suggest that if the crossed hoses are a nuisance in the engine compartment, uncross them: route the port skin fitting to the port cockpit drain, and the starboard skin fitting to the starboard cockpit drain. You'll find that this somewhat simpler - and less space consuming - arrangement will work perfectly well for you on that particular boat. In the event that you doubt me, I suggest you try both options and demonstrate to yourselves that on your boat there's absolutely nothing to be gained by crossing the hoses over! You're doing really well and I hope the foregoing might be of some help to you. Kind regards, Chris.

      Thank you, Chris. Many have said the drains should go above the waterline, and I would not have thought about that. The crossing of the hoses would not be paramount, but rules are rules 😂🤣😅 Cheers for watching 🙂

      @@SailingSeabird So, still on the topic of cockpit drains, here's a bit of history for you, together with its somewhat eccentric consequences... The fashion for crossing over cockpit drain hoses emerged decades ago, in an era when the designers' quest for reduced windage (and therefore better close hauled performance) for offshore racing yachts was producing progressively lower freeboard. An unintended consequence of the diminishing freeboard was that cockpits were getting a bit too shallow for comfort and safety, so in order to maintain a useful degree of protection for the crew, the designers had to shift the cockpit sole downwards, unavoidably moving it closer to the vessel's waterline. So far so good, except that with the low cockpit sole, when the yacht heeled, the lee side now tended to drop below the external water level - so water would enter the cockpit via the drain on the lee side. Which is not at all dangerous - but a bit irritating if you don't like having to paddle around in your inappropriately named "self-draining" cockpit. So the designers' impromptu response to this flooding problem was to cross the drain hoses over - and in so doing they'd improvised a solution that works for some yachts but by no means all. Unfortunately, owners who didn't (and I'm afraid most still apparently don't) understand the various design considerations, simply decided en-masse that if it was good enough for lots (but by no means all) offshore racers, then it must be a great idea for them too. Thus crossing the hoses caught on and became a bit of a fad and, as is often the way with fads, it was often implemented with little or no coherent thought or rationale behind it. So to this day, lots of people cross the hoses over, even though in many cases the result will be the opposite of what's required. That's because if you blindly cross the hoses on an inappropriate yacht and hope for the best, you're highly likely to end up with a "self-draining" cockpit that won't drain itself lower than the height of the windward drain point! In making the decision "to cross, or not to cross", consider the maximum angle of heel that you reckon your boat will be most efficiently sailed at when she's hard on the wind. As a rule of thumb, that angle will generally be about what's required to get the lee toe-rail at the vessel's midships section skimming the surface of the water. Having established that angle, now work out if the lee side of the cockpit sole will still be above the external water level, or if it will have dropped below it. If, when heeled at that angle, the lee side of the cockpit sole drops below the external water level, then consider crossing the drain hoses over. But if the lee side of the cockpit sole is likely to remain well above the external water level, then don't cross the hoses. Finally, and despite some people insisting the contrary is true, there is absolutely no law, rule, or regulation saying you must cross your cockpit drain hoses. That detail is entirely a matter of preference - so you can do what's best for your particular boat, according to the way she's designed, ballasted and trimmed, and the way you choose to sail her. As a footnote, on a sailing yacht, even if the cockpit drain skin fittings are located above the waterline when the boat's on an even keel, if they're likely to be submerged for any length of time when the boat is heeled then your insurance surveyor will (or should) insist that they have seacocks. As a motor boat doesn't have that problem - because it will roll rather than lean over and maintain a heel - the insurance requirement for motor vessels on that detail generally takes a more relaxed stance. For peace of mind, however, I think it's still a good idea to have them. Sorry to be so bloody long -winded but I felt that the foregoing needed explaining. Here endeth the lesson! Cheers, Chris.

    Why are you crossing them that way. Why not straight down

      So there's is no chance that the cockpit can backfill. If the port side cockpit drain is below the waterline (heeling), the water would come in as both the drain and the seacock are on the same side. I hope this helps. Someone did explain to me once but have since forgotten, it's now just a standard practice for me. Cheers for watching 🙂

    I know nothing about keeled boats, but i was expecting some kind of valve for the drains on the deck. Is it really that simple of a mecanism, even when you're in the water? 😮
