  • A simple yam rice with meat fits well when paired with bak kut teh. This pot of rice dish with additions of yam cubes and mushrooms is popular within the Chinese community. Yam rice can also be served on its own and easily adapted to be a vegetarian dish.

    Delicious yam rice recipe is easy and fast to prepare. The main ingredient is actually taro. In Malaysia, Singapore and the neighbouring countries, taro is also known as yam. The other ingredients such as dried shrimps and shiitake mushroom give a wonderful aroma to the dish. They provide the right amount of umami and you will only want to crave for more. In some stalls or restaurants in Malaysia, [Hokkien bak kut teh](www.nyonyacook...) is served with yam rice or [fried shallots](www.nyonyacook...) rice.
    Vegetarian yam rice
    Yam rice is also often cooked with pork. As I was serving this yam rice with a pork dish, [bak kut teh](www.nyonyacook..., I omitted pork in this recipe. Dried shrimps can also be removed from this recipe to adapt it to a vegetarian dish. Feel free to add more shiitake mushroom and also a pinch of salt to enhance the taste.
    Yam rice in a rice cooker
    It is also possible to cook yam rice in a rice cooker. Simply use an electric rice cooker to cook rice along with the sautéd yam cubes as how you would normally cook rice. In a electronic rice cooker, rice will be able to stay warm longer than a traditional pot.
    This is an easy one pot dish which can be made any day of the week. Garnish yam rice with some [fried shallots](www.nyonyacook..., spring onions, coriander or even sliced fresh chillies.

    Great colour! That would be a very hearty and satisfying dish with the taro cubes. Can you eat it cold or at room temperature as well, do you think?

    That looks very good, now I know a way to use taro. Why do you use both light and dark soy sauce? Thanks!

      Jeff Schrader dark soy sauce is for color and light soy sauce for the saltiness

    Hey! I've tried cooking and it was pretty bland, was is cause there was no salt added??

    • @nyonyacooking
      @nyonyacooking  Před 5 lety

      Hey there! Hm....the saltiness comes from the dried shrimps and soy sauce. Adding much more salt will make it too salty in my opinion. Did you follow the exact amount as per the recipe? If the dish is still bland, I'd recommend adding 0.5 tablespoon of oyster sauce or mushroom sauce.

    But you must know how to choose the Taro, because there are some that are do not turn starchy and fluffy after cooked. How do you choose your Taro?

    • @rdu239
      @rdu239 Před 5 lety

      If you cut it so small the starchiness will be more pronounced
