This song every time I hear it, I can feel it in my heart and soul. He was a very poor child growing up and lived in a poor neighborhood. He grew up in the south and went to church . Even attending black church where they were pentecostal. So he grew up making his own sound combining blues with country, rock, and religion. He was always different. I love h8m today as a 73 year old as I did when as a small child in the 50"s.

As Elvis was standing there as the flute was playing. You could see the respect Elvis had for his band. But you can see how much respect the band had for Elvis. And they loved each other they was so tight. When Elvis passed away I turned 17 years old the same. I grew up with Elvis he was a big part of my life. They was always playing Elvis's movies and a few concerts of his own TV. I grew up in a bad home. So when Elvis came on TV I would fall into Elvis's world. I could escape my problems and fall in love with him. The one of the things I took from Elvis was to love everyone. Well 2 things I have to add it to my list was his gospel music. I grew up loving God and Savior Jesus I give credit to Elvis for that because Elvis was a big part of my life. He sure had a powerful presence. With his old movies and concerts I still have his presence now in my life.

I've been listening to him sing this song for over 50 years and it still gives me goosbumps. Shout out to the director for that push in. It really helps build the tension. BTW there is a clip of Judy Garland singing The Battle Hymn of The Republic, she's well passed her best but she is still amazing. ❤

It Represents the American Triumph over Slavery and the Reunification of our Country after the Civil War.

Expect the unexpected. You nailed it. He's been that way since he first started performing and that's why I love the fact that he has the best musicians around him, and in addition to the way they play, the best musicians can handle surprises because they pay so close attention and they work together so tightly. I know this from being in bands for a long time and it's one thing that has always impressed me about Elvis and his musicians so much. It's actually a thing. He was known for being so unpredictable. If you want a really amazing early example of it, and in fact this in particular was the television performance that set that huge racist backlash off that you observed in Elvis and the black community, check out quite specifically, Hound dog, from the early 1956 Milton Berle variety show make sure to go for a longer cut because there's some fantastic interaction with him and I think he's like 20 or maybe 21 years old in this and a new sensation. It's before the one that you either have already seen or you are more likely to come across, which was much later in the fall of that year on The Ed Sullivan Show and by then there was so much controversy and it was a lot more controlled. And the one from June or whatever it is in early 1956 on the Milton Berle variety show, it was already bringing down the house and always on television they do a short version of it, so just as this really short version of Hound dog would normally end, he suddenly kept it going but only at half tempo. They had never practiced it that way; they hadn't talked about it, the fans were just going nuts and I think instinctively Elvis thought they should have more than just a minute and 50 seconds. But because they had played live together so many times, and knew each other so well, the band immediately adjusts to it and keeps going and plays it up as this half tempo version of it and it basically turned it into a burlesque. By slowing it down, it gave Elvis the opportunity to get even more suggestive with his dancing and exaggerated gestures for maybe 20 more seconds and then he ended it. It is something to behold.

As the band reaches it's peak toward the end of the song, I get suck a kick out of Elvis saying "Hallelujah" then "Louder!" and then, "Now!" just as he's about to close out the song. His command over the band and orchestrations are a thing to behold. Have never seen another artist like Elvis on stage; doubtful there'll ever be another one.

Trilogy is a medley of three uniquely American pieces: “Dixie,” (dixie are the states down south in the U.S.); “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a marching hymn of the Union Army during the American Civil War; and “All My Trials,” a Bahamian (people of the Bahamas) lullaby related to African American spirituals sung by protesting folksingers of the 1950s. Not only was he orchestrating the orchestra/band, but because he felt the music so deeply, it was impossible for him NOT to move. Notice at about 5:34 when he said "Hallelujah" how he bent over as his voice became even more powerful. Someone else would have done that most likely standing straight up, but you can tell from that little movement how the power of the music, not just the words, went right through him. Also about 5:18 while looking @ orchestra when the horns blared so powerfully, you can see on his face the entire experience raging through him. And this was just one of the many things that made this Man so unique & so spectacular. No one has ever put the emotion into a song like Elvis did.

The Flautist seen here only ever played for Elvis this one time, Gabe Balthazaar. He was a Jazz Flute and Sax man, who played with Stan Kenton and was much revered in Hawaii ... he passed away only last year. An old friend of mine who plays Flute for a major British Orchestra, has been in awe of Gabe's performance here for decades ... even now, when the Elvis show performs with trhe backing of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the part is played by Trumpet, as no Flautist will take this piece on ...
Elvis never wrote a song but he knew how he wanted them to sound and created his version on songs already hits by others as well as songs that were written and new with him as first time recorded. In the movie Elvis we see Austin Butler recreate a scefrom That's The Way It Is during the rehearsal part of an upcoming tour for Elvis - that film was one of the docu-movies of Elvis. You should watch it. This song is a trilogy - 3 songs blended together created by Mickey Newberry. That story is incredible as well. Mickey was a solo artist who performed with his guitar alone. He was on tour around the country doing clubs, smaller venues mostly and he was from the South and at a stop in New York, i believe it was and the club owner said to him when he arrived he looked forward to his concert but don't sing Dixieland because his Northern patrons would not take well to that Southern anthem. Mickey was taken back by the comment, he didn't sing Dixieland in his shows and he was also a little insulted that because he was from the South the man thought he would automatically include that song in his shows. No problem though because he didn't sing it so he began to get ready for the show. That encounter kept playing over in his mind all the time before the concert started, he was also a little annoyed that someone would hire him and then tell him what he could or couldn't sing. Still no issue he had never sang it, but as the show began the thoughts of it wouldn't go away, it was if God kept bringing it up to him. As he was in the middle of his show he realized that he had to do that song partly to prove he couldn't be sensored. He looked at the crowd who had been enjoying his show so far and felt the seemed to be mature enough to handle that song. So suddenly he started to play the intro and watched the crowd, they didn't seem tense or if the might drag him off the stage, so he continued and began the song Dixieland. As he was in the first verse of this song which had been the battle anthem during the civil war for the confederacy, he realized that was the only part he was sure he knew, so the crowd seemed to be fine with it but now what was he going to do. He said as if a revelation from God he thought how well part of The Battle Hymn of The Republic, which was the Northern's union army's battle anthem and as he finished the part af Dixieland he began to sing the chorus of that song, then the Negro Spiritual came to mind and he included it in to the end of the song. As he ended the song and took a breath waiting on the reaction of his audience and to see if the owner might appear a d drag him off the stage, the audience burst into applause. He decided to more properly construct this song and record it. In the early days of television before 24/7 air time most stations at the end their last program would thank you for watching and play the National Anthem. A station in Memphis had decided to end the day by playing Mickey's blending of those 3 songs representing the 3 sides of a major interest in the war that tore our country apart. He had entitled it American Trilogy. The legend is that one night Elvis then wife heard it one night and told Elvis about it, Elvis listened and liked it, he requested the right to record it. Being Elvis instead of performing the soft and laid back version Mickey created and sang, he repeated The Battle Hymns chorus again with the build up instrumental bridge to end it as he did many of his songs not quietly but with power. The ironic thing about those songs, while the club owner cautioned him about sing that Southern song in front of a Northern audience yet that Northern song was included in many hymnals and sang in churches and taught in schools. The songs were not written for the war but were inspiring to those who were fighting it - i will include it wasn't all about slavery but that was an excuse often used but more about financial issues - not enough space or time here to study it but the north's more industrial commerce which was reach a leveling or decline and the south's agricultural one that was growing - but back to the song so those songs both had messages of hope as did the third song often sang by slaves as they worked, "All My Trials Lord". Another ironic thing about the songs are many of the Elvis fans in the south, unaware of the songs origin and what the part the word Trilogy had to do with the song tri-meaning 3, would hear the beginning words, In Dixieland where i was born... and forgetful or unaware of the two songs taught to children or sang in schools, maybe thinking this was that complete Dixieland song because they also remembered the words to the other song and thinking it was the same song, but when it would start often at Elvis Tribute Artist shows they would stand in pride of their southern heritage and some even wave confederate flags. I will say i was born and raised in the south and like Elvis had neighbors of different ethnic backgrounds or heritages and taught we were all the same and loved by God. - i know this is months after you recorded it and you may not look back at later comments but wanted to add the history of the song for others that might find you later as i have. You can also find Mickey Newberry's beautiful version on CZcams as well. I used his version and Elvis' ending in a performance i video of sharing a more dramatic interpretation using Sign Language and props at an Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA) event. I can proudly say that at some of the larger ETA events were artist both professional and karaoke singers come to share their love and appreciation of Elvis and his music with other fans, the biggest is during Elvis Week in Memphis and a location known as The Tent, a beautiful thing happens. People on stage and off come from all walks of life and many countries and will all stand up and join hands and sing together in unity not in pride for one area of the country or another but for good that is this country and those who come from other countries are often those to request this song and also "America", another song Elvis recorded and often sing it as loud as those born here. The crowd mirrors the message this song portrays. Beautiful!

I've been listening to him sing this song for over 50 years and it still gives me goosbumps. Shout out to the director for that push in. It really helps build the tension. BTW there is a clip of Judy Garland singing The Battle Hymn of The Republic, she's well passed her best but she is still amazing. ❤

Expect the unexpected. You nailed it. He's been that way since he first started performing and that's why I love the fact that he has the best musicians around him, and in addition to the way they play, the best musicians can handle surprises because they pay so close attention and they work together so tightly. I know this from being in bands for a long time and it's one thing that has always impressed me about Elvis and his musicians so much.
It's actually a thing. He was known for being so unpredictable. If you want a really amazing early example of it, and in fact this in particular was the television performance that set that huge racist backlash off that you observed in Elvis and the black community, check out quite specifically, Hound dog, from the early 1956 Milton Berle variety show make sure to go for a longer cut because there's some fantastic interaction with him and I think he's like 20 or maybe 21 years old in this and a new sensation. It's before the one that you either have already seen or you are more likely to come across, which was much later in the fall of that year on The Ed Sullivan Show and by then there was so much controversy and it was a lot more controlled.
And the one from June or whatever it is in early 1956 on the Milton Berle variety show, it was already bringing down the house and always on television they do a short version of it, so just as this really short version of Hound dog would normally end, he suddenly kept it going but only at half tempo.
They had never practiced it that way; they hadn't talked about it, the fans were just going nuts and I think instinctively Elvis thought they should have more than just a minute and 50 seconds.
But because they had played live together so many times, and knew each other so well, the band immediately adjusts to it and keeps going and plays it up as this half tempo version of it and it basically turned it into a burlesque.
By slowing it down, it gave Elvis the opportunity to get even more suggestive with his dancing and exaggerated gestures for maybe 20 more seconds and then he ended it. It is something to behold.

Thanks for the great reaction. I've watched Elvis's American Trilogy video many times. As the band reaches it's peak toward the end of the song, I get suck a kick out of Elvis saying "Hallelujah" then "Louder!" and then, "Now!" just as he's about to close out the song. His command over the band and orchestrations are a thing to behold. Have never seen another artist like Elvis on stage; doubtful there'll ever be another one.

Trilogy is a medley of three uniquely American pieces: “Dixie,” (dixie are the states down south in the U.S.); “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a marching hymn of the Union Army during the American Civil War; and “All My Trials,” a Bahamian (people of the Bahamas) lullaby related to African American spirituals sung by protesting folksingers of the 1950s. Not only was he orchestrating the orchestra/band, but because he felt the music so deeply, it was impossible for him NOT to move. Notice at about 5:34 when he said "Hallelujah" how he bent over as his voice became even more powerful. Someone else would have done that most likely standing straight up, but you can tell from that little movement how the power of the music, not just the words, went right through him. Also about 5:18 while looking @ orchestra when the horns blared so powerfully, you can see on his face the entire experience raging through him. And this was just one of the many things that made this Man so unique & so spectacular. No one has ever put the emotion into a song like Elvis did.

I'm reminded of an interview w-Whitney Houston where she said her mother was w-Elvis for years -- which was not true -- & I noticed how her expression & tone of voice changed at that moment -- it was because she wasn't telling the truth.

Elvis loved to showcase the talents of the people who played for and around him ... he loved the talent of his backing singers, both the Imperials, and JD Sumner & the Stamps ( seen here ), and also the Sweet Inspirations who often opened his show, and were well paid for doing so. The Flautist seen here only ever played for Elvis this one time, Gabe Balthazaar. He was a Jazz Flute and Sax man, who played with Stan Kenton and was much revered in Hawaii ... he passed away only last year.
An old friend of mine who plays Flute for a major British Orchestra, has been in awe of Gabe's performance here for decades ... even now, when the Elvis show performs with trhe backing of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the part is played by Trumpet, as no Flautist will take this piece on ...
Elvis never wrote a song but he knew how he wanted them to sound and created his version on songs already hits by others as well as songs that were written and new with him as first time recorded. In the movie Elvis we see Austin Butler recreate a scefrom That's The Way It Is during the rehearsal part of an upcoming tour for Elvis - that film was one of the docu-movies of Elvis. You should watch it. This song is a trilogy - 3 songs blended together created by Mickey Newberry. That story is incredible as well. Mickey was a solo artist who performed with his guitar alone. He was on tour around the country doing clubs, smaller venues mostly and he was from the South and at a stop in New York, i believe it was and the club owner said to him when he arrived he looked forward to his concert but don't sing Dixieland because his Northern patrons would not take well to that Southern anthem. Mickey was taken back by the comment, he didn't sing Dixieland in his shows and he was also a little insulted that because he was from the South the man thought he would automatically include that song in his shows. No problem though because he didn't sing it so he began to get ready for the show. That encounter kept playing over in his mind all the time before the concert started, he was also a little annoyed that someone would hire him and then tell him what he could or couldn't sing. Still no issue he had never sang it, but as the show began the thoughts of it wouldn't go away, it was if God kept bringing it up to him. As he was in the middle of his show he realized that he had to do that song partly to prove he couldn't be sensored. He looked at the crowd who had been enjoying his show so far and felt the seemed to be mature enough to handle that song. So suddenly he started to play the intro and watched the crowd, they didn't seem tense or if the might drag him off the stage, so he continued and began the song Dixieland. As he was in the first verse of this song which had been the battle anthem during the civil war for the confederacy, he realized that was the only part he was sure he knew, so the crowd seemed to be fine with it but now what was he going to do. He said as if a revelation from God he thought how well part of The Battle Hymn of The Republic, which was the Northern's union army's battle anthem and as he finished the part af Dixieland he began to sing the chorus of that song, then the Negro Spiritual came to mind and he included it in to the end of the song. As he ended the song and took a breath waiting on the reaction of his audience and to see if the owner might appear a d drag him off the stage, the audience burst into applause. He decided to more properly construct this song and record it. In the early days of television before 24/7 air time most stations at the end their last program would thank you for watching and play the National Anthem. A station in Memphis had decided to end the day by playing Mickey's blending of those 3 songs representing the 3 sides of a major interest in the war that tore our country apart. He had entitled it American Trilogy. The legend is that one night Elvis then wife heard it one night and told Elvis about it, Elvis listened and liked it, he requested the right to record it. Being Elvis instead of performing the soft and laid back version Mickey created and sang, he repeated The Battle Hymns chorus again with the build up instrumental bridge to end it as he did many of his songs not quietly but with power. The ironic thing about those songs, while the club owner cautioned him about sing that Southern song in front of a Northern audience yet that Northern song was included in many hymnals and sang in churches and taught in schools. The songs were not written for the war but were inspiring to those who were fighting it - i will include it wasn't all about slavery but that was an excuse often used but more about financial issues - not enough space or time here to study it but the north's more industrial commerce which was reach a leveling or decline and the south's agricultural one that was growing - but back to the song so those songs both had messages of hope as did the third song often sang by slaves as they worked, "All My Trials Lord". Another ironic thing about the songs are many of the Elvis fans in the south, unaware of the songs origin and what the part the word Trilogy had to do with the song tri-meaning 3, would hear the beginning words, In Dixieland where i was born... and forgetful or unaware of the two songs taught to children or sang in schools, maybe thinking this was that complete Dixieland song because they also remembered the words to the other song and thinking it was the same song, but when it would start often at Elvis Tribute Artist shows they would stand in pride of their southern heritage and some even wave confederate flags. I will say i was born and raised in the south and like Elvis had neighbors of different ethnic backgrounds or heritages and taught we were all the same and loved by God. - i know this is months after you recorded it and you may not look back at later comments but wanted to add the history of the song for others that might find you later as i have. You can also find Mickey Newberry's beautiful version on CZcams as well. I used his version and Elvis' ending in a performance i video of sharing a more dramatic interpretation using Sign Language and props at an Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA) event. I can proudly say that at some of the larger ETA events were artist both professional and karaoke singers come to share their love and appreciation of Elvis and his music with other fans, the biggest is during Elvis Week in Memphis and a location known as The Tent, a beautiful thing happens. People on stage and off come from all walks of life and many countries and will all stand up and join hands and sing together in unity not in pride for one area of the country or another but for good that is this country and those who come from other countries are often those to request this song and also "America", another song Elvis recorded and often sing it as loud as those born here. The crowd mirrors the message this song portrays. Beautiful!
