- Explore how beavers build their impressive dams, and what impact these structures have on the surrounding environment.
--
Nestled in the forests of Canada sits the world’s longest beaver dam. This 850-meter-long structure is large enough to be seen in satellite imagery and has dramatically transformed the region, creating a pond containing 70 million liters of water. But dams of any size can have huge impacts on their environment. So how exactly do beavers build these impressive structures? Glynnis Hood investigates.

Also worth noting: Beaver dams trap sediment and nutrients at the bottom of the pond, so when dams are abandoned (say, due to an exhaustion of suitable food sources) and fall into disrepair, the drained pond becomes the site of rich meadows, which support a host of additional species.

@@iridium8341 Really? I wasn't aware that beavers blew up mountains to mine toxic and radioactive materials, or replaced massive tracts of vegetation with impermeable pavement, or produced massive quantities of non-biodegradable waste. (And by the way, most of their favored tree species readily coppice, so unlike humans, they don't utterly destroy forests.)
As for goats, they weren't the ones who killed off most of the predators that force them to move from place to place, thus preventing long-term damage from intensive browsing.
Damn, i've read it as 'fall into despair'

I can see you working on future projects with your little beaver helper with a construction helmet on right next to you
The quest for knowledge and understanding never gets dark and the more we ask why in videos like these, the more students know and the more remarkable the world truly seems.
why?
@@FMFvideos duh what a question, because we all live to suffer a little bit then die. so we reproduce more humans in this culture so they can expirnce the suffering this life has to offer and existential crisis and how much meaningless we as living creatures are, so go now and make the must of what you have and enjoy this Depressing reality that is based literally on pure chance while it last.
@@user-py9gl7ff9v why?
@@FMFvideos Why? You ask…When we encourage students and young generations to ask ‘why?’ passion is ignited and that group of young minds is transformed into what teacher hopes their student will become- a lifelong learner. We can literally change life choices and career plans just by looking a little closer at daily life and discovering what lies within. Stay curious everyone!
@@brainmaster5816 why?
UK guy here and we've seen the benefits of our beaver reintroduction program; during a recent heatwave and drought, the land beavers are based on remained lush and green while the farmland around was dry and brown. I'm hoping the program continues and expands to more counties.
Reintroduce?
Beavers are native to North America.
@@sasukedemon888888888 There are two species of beaver in the world, North American and Eurasian. The main differences, among others, is that the Eurasian species is slightly larger, has shorter fur and the tail is less round. They were hunted to near extinction here in Europe for their fur and castoreum (used in perfume and medicine).
@@IAmEvilTree it barely lives in asia but mostly in northern and central and western europe and russia but i get what you mean its a fascinating animal and extremly important just like all other animals to an eco system sadly we humans are the worst enemy of everything on earth
@@IAmEvilTree but would'nt it be a invasive species
@@itzurboyyapper No. Eurasian Beavers used to be native to Britain before they were hunted to extinction; now we're bringing them back.
Beavers are really like environmental engineers! Our crew filmed a project that aimed to bring wilderness back to the UK. We had a chance to talk to a couple who managed to get Eurasian beavers back to Cornwall to transform their farm into a biodiversity hotspot. Beavers are constantly working, building dams, cutting down trees or building a lodge. And this is key to sparking new life into the wilderness. We're curious to see how the farm in Cornwall will respond after the reintroduction of beavers.
So, Beavers are architects after all. Amazing. I could learn a lot from them.😉😄
No.

Haahaahhaahah 😂
Thanks Ted-Ed, now I wanna see a beaver dam in person. 😂
They look horrible. That's why humans used to take them apart before we knew the magic behind the chaos
Gosh, the animation in this is super charming! Well-done on that, and on the narration. I wish my grade school could have had access to TED-Ed and the many other good educational channels here in CZcams and on other streaming services.
I would agree that the animation is great. The character designs are very pleasant for the eyes, and the animation in general reminds of the rubber hose style.
However, in my honest opinion, there was a major issue; the backgrounds.
It is completely fine to have a background that is in a different style in comparison to the animation, because that would make the characters stand out, as we've seen that being used brilliantly with "The Amazing World of Gumball", and it allows the characters to be in an atmosphere that is different from what they would typically be associated with, but unfortunately the colour palette and overall colours used for the backgrounds in this video were too vibrant. Which made it difficult to focus on the characters-since everything blended into the background.
Improvement?
My suggestion wouldn't necessarily be to remove the papier mâché background, but instead, what I am advising is for them to improve the colour scheme. Following the colour theory, and keeping the saturation, contrast, value (brightness/darkness), and hue in a coherent manner.
@@StellaGoetia666 I hope very much the team reads this suggestion of yours. I didn't notice the background issue when I first viewed it, but now that I've given it a second watch, I have to second that suggestion.
@@StellaGoetia666 100% agreed
These little chunks are such diligent workers. What fantastic little creatures they are
*Ted-ed:- Why beavers builds dams?*
Me:- Cause they love to flex on other animals who can't.
The play on the "Jaws" poster at 1:38 is just outstanding! Hats off Ted Ed!
Not to mention "The Brady Bunch" at 3:36!
I never realized how wholesome beavers are until now. Thanks Ted Ed
This is so well timed because I saw a viral video of a rescued beaver making a dam using Christmas household stuff.
I saw that video too!
I searched for this because the Christmas dam beaver
I liked this a lot but I would have preferred to see some footage of actual beavers mixed with the animation which was a bit overblown at times - enough to actually detract.
The animation style reminds me a lot of Ren and Stimpy. I loved that show!
This might be my favourite TED-Ed animation to date!
Me too
Why animation is so good ❤️😭
I've always been interested in beavers and this video catches my attention about them even more. It's just so cool how they're able to build little fortresses for themselves.
This video is superb! The animation and the humour are great!
The illustrations and animation are incredible!
I'm from the 3rd World country and I just wanna say thank you TED-Ed for providing us with high-quality educational videos for free!
p.s. please make more animal or history related videos, those are among my favorites topics :)
Brazil?
Animal and history related videos are the coolest!
Water: *is too deep*
Beavers: *don't give a dam(n)*
Thats some Damn fine looking animation there.
The animation is AMAZING!!!
The animation reached a level of abstraction that made this harder to understand and visualize than necessary in my opinion.
The animations are amazing as always 👍👍👍
I just realized how smart beavers are..
The "Beaver Bunch" reference deserves and award! Great reference.
Love the animation. Here in the UK, we have reintroduced the European beaver.
OMG the animation alone is amazing!!!
Thanks Ted-Ed, Beavers need to be appreciated more. its about dam time
Great work as always. I'm reminded of the characters in the wonderful child book series Poppy when I think of beavers and all they do.
Ted ed is basically the channel that answers ever question we were wondering when we were children.
*sees water flowing
Beaver: *n o*
They are the original OCD hoarders.
what a coincidence! I've been watching a lot of great beaver videos for the last 2 weeks. This is also an amazing one
This animation is adorable
I really love this, it makes me like a curious enlightened child again:>
I loved the video! very interesting!
Great video. Beavers are pretty cool
Great animation!!!!
Nature is truly beautiful
Lovely animation spitting facts!
Fascinating engineers bustling in nature!
Beavers are Great ecosystem services! Gotta love them
I recall seeing beavers during my childhood on the Bull River in Montana.
I don't typically like these types of artstyles, I prefer the old Chinese tapestry type, but
This is a super cool artstyle, perfectly hits the nostalgic 90s cartoon vibe.
The animation is so dam good
Really love the animation
Me too, though I really couldn't get what's the biggest rodent illustration supposed to be (had to google it, and still unsure)
The animation of this episode can be a cartoon show.
that was one weird looking capybara...
Dam! That's crazy!
Beaver
“Huh, nice flowing stream. Shame if something were to… prevent that”
Mother nature is so awesome! Amazing 😻
Interesting. I've never seen a beaver in real life and didn't think they have this intricate plan.
Wow!
They are so clever.
😁👍🏿
Interesting Video
I guess they make amazing pets as well. Over the years, I've heard sooo many men say that they would like to "get some beaver".
3:25 aww poor mother
Beavers find true love as well huh . That’s cool.
Hey Ted Ed. Please make more animal and mythology and history vs videos
someone had fun animating this
They are really amazing lilltle guys
I watch it when I study English. Easy to understand and good.
This was a dam good video.
This animations are superb 😍😍
Thank you for this valuable video 🙏❤️😘
Ha ha ha!! 3:35 to 3:38 is like The Brady Bunch, but with BEAVERS!!!! Ted-Ed, you cracked me up with that one! Legends never die, man... The legend that is The Brady Bunch show does not know how to die...
please explain a video about how photocoping works
That beaver worker forgot to wear a helmet.😆I like his blue prints though!
With fortresses, come beaver warriors.
Just-in Beaver !!!
The beaver; nature's engineers. love them
This video was something I could definitely get my teeth into.
The animation is so John K.-esque
I thought highly of sheep dogs but beavers are wildlife engineers, now that’s impressive
Beavers are amazing!
Reminds me of the days I used to watch Angry Beavers.
By loyalty, determenation, and the power of friendship!
The animation gives early 2000s cartoons vibe. 💓
Beaver dam + flood waters = mobile home lol
If there’s a French version of this video, the bio dome in Montreal should play it for their beaver section.
Gotta love 'em beavers.
Here in northern BC Canada, we must have the world's laziest beavers. I live next to a very large natural lake and when I'm out in my kayak I see beavers all the time just frolicking in the natural lake not carrying or building anything. I guess they figured 'hey, why build a dam if there's already a huge lake here'. I can relate. But then again, no, could they have ... ? It's an 80 km long lake.
What language do they speak in order to coordinate a group to plan, gather materials, and construct a complicated dam?
While studying about dams in civil engineering, i read the largest wooden dam in the world is beaver dam. I thought it's the name of a dam
Nice beaver
🎉🎉 have a good day!
Beavers are such underrated animals they work so hard I can feel the logs coming inside me
0:56 Can someone please tell me what the text on the bottom is supposed to be/mean?
I love it!. I think they are the most intelligent animals. God bless these animals
This is so cute!🤗👍
This is a dam good video
Due to lack of trapping, beavers have been becoming more into my town in Canada 🇨🇦, I’m on the waterways and rivers in my home we could see sometimes trees that have bite marks, or taken down by beavers 🦫 one even wrecked a fence 😂
Constructive beaver 👍🏻
I did not see an answer to the Why. I would speculate that the two reasons are: Food and safety. It is like their greenhouse. But few predators dive to reach the underwater access to their home.
This was drawn by a true cartoonist.
They should give the animator a raise
Man beavers are much smarter than I thought they were
WHERE ARE THE RIDDLES :((((((((((((((((((

Excellent lesson, very informative! One critique; the animation on this one is just terrible. 😬
