    To commenters here asking why "Sally" is letting Jack into the Tet, it's simple. It thinks that if it can clone Julia, then Jack and Julia will make for a more effective team.

    • @Philweasel
      @Philweasel Před rokem +329

      @beyerch Před rokem

      But wouldn't a more effective team just be repair droids? Why does it need cloned people in the first place? For that matter, why exactly does such an advanced civilization need to ravage inhabited planets? Surely there are plenty of ways to get resources, etc.

    • @Philweasel

      @@beyerch The drones are pretty dumb, and not particularly adaptable.
      We don’t know if they’re replaceable either, and they might require resources to simply run. Notably the Tet is really sparing with them. It has thousands, but refuses to deploy them in adequate numbers.
      And who knows what the Tet is actually for or who built it. Again, it’s not staggeringly smart either, it shows massive blind spots in everything requiring creative thinking. Most of it’s plans and schemes are copied from things it’s observed humans doing.

      @Tommykey07 Před rokem +87

      @@beyerch yeah, I get that. The prevalence of water in the universe makes all alien invasions of Earth for water unnecessary.

      I have proof. Listen to Col
      Beemon's speech as Jack Fixes the Drone he says "taking energy", not taking water.

    This movie is a visual feast. The depiction of a ravaged earth is breathtaking. The design of the matching off-white equipment, vehicles, and interior of the ‘zone towers’ is very stylish and straight from a possible IKEA Tet range - that I wish existed. I like the way the Tets skin would fold and ripple as it was computing, doing calculations. I think that even as a smart AI it couldn't understand subterfuge, deception and the willingness of organics to sacrifice themselves for their species. The Needs of the Many. It had a certain amount of guile, but it's chess moveset is limited: it can't deal with an organic opponent that feels a powerful and complex emotion such as Love, that causes it to behave illogically, willing to sacrifice itself instead of surviving at all costs. It assumes pain and pleasure are the operating principles of organics and thus assumes that they cannot transcend these basic drives and are incapable of anything else. Thus was the "all powerful" Tet, the insipid space mining probe, destroyed.

    I always preferred this over "The Edge of Tommorrow" partly because i'm not a big fan of time travel movies but also, it has a good story and some really cool elements in it. Plus the music ("Oblivion" by M83) is perfect for it. Awesome movie. 😊👍

    I love Oblivion, but Tet giving them access to the station was far too easy. A superintelligence just opening up the inner hull just like that didn't add up. Even without scanning it would've never let them in, simply using logic. The Tet knew several fuel cells were missing. Other than that I freaking love Oblivion.

    • @Alvan81
      @Alvan81 Před rokem +48

      Excellent point; _But Only If,_ you assume pure logic, no malfunction, perfection in tactics, _and_ lack of hubris. There's *nothing in the plot,* to justify those assumptions! However, the statement "I am your God" validates my assumption that you overestimate TET. It's vocal issues while granting Jack access also imply some problems processing. (A processor overload due to failing/completely unplanned situation?)

    • @theuniversewithin74
      @theuniversewithin74 Před rokem +11

      @@Alvan81 Letting Jack into the very core of the mothership served no real purpose and giving access and thereby risking the very existence of the TET outpost. It makes no sense and a superintelligence wouldn't make such a mundane mistake. Also not having a couple of drones nearby is highly unlikely. They would've obliterated them the very second something was amiss.

    • @Alvan81
      @Alvan81 Před rokem +30

      @@theuniversewithin74 Why do you assume it was _the core?_ it appears to be the inner part of the outmost layer. Maybe it was merely the Human Interface/Training/Birthing Area.
      Hence adjacent to the clone storage/maturation nest. Is your Computer Screen and Keyboard the same as your CPU? Maybe maybe not. Human beings are super intelligent and we make mistakes all the time.
      "I am your God" is evidence of a great deal of error/fallabilty, ego. Which again support my point.
      The purpose? is to get a more Ideal Partner/Hostage or Specimen.
      Look, it's a movie a so they gave the TET flaws. But there are flaws in your assumptions also, that's my point.
      In my mind TET isn't the 'superintelligence' it's the alien version of Mars Perserverance/ingenuity.
      Tet is likely phase I terraforming bot. That's my theory.

      @theuniversewithin74 Před rokem +12

      @@Alvan81 doesn't matter if it was the core or not. It was inside and absolutely devastating if a large bomb went off. Just letting the ship close to the TET was reckless enough. Isn't it odd that the TET had protocols and procedures for just about anything, but none for what mattered the most?

    • @Alvan81
      @Alvan81 Před rokem +13

      @@theuniversewithin74 Regards protocols. No machine has protocols for _every scenario,_ especially mutiny/treachery. Jack already beat/short circuited _several layers of contingencies,_ maybe TET was winging it. Anyway I love the movie; so anyone who enjoys it is entittled to their own ideas!😄
      TET is the alien version of the Mars Rover, here to Terraform not a super intelligent alien.

    I'm siding with others here: the special effects were mindblowing
    as witnessed here, backed with great writing and acting from Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman.
    Now, it was within a year or so from this movie ( perhaps longer ) that
    Edge Of Tomorrow was released. Unfortunately, Oblivion didn't fare so well at the box office. Now, this is my opinion, but due to this poor showing Warner Brothers lazily promoted Edge of Tomorrow and it also floundered at the box office.
    It Kicks Ass.
    Sorry for the rant, these two films deserve the credit to be placed in the science fiction canon.
