  • Hey Space Cowboys,
So, I'll be the first to say, that my opinion about this show flip-flopped many times, from the announcement of it, all the way to watching the last episode. There are definitely some interesting and well-thought-out aspects of it and I appreciate the level of detail. But, I've said it before and I'll say it again. You can have all the right ingredients but have the wrong chef.
So here are my thoughts and opinions on this live-action adaptation of one of the most beloved animes ever created. I tried to be as fair as possible and give reasons as to why I feel specific ways about it.

I guess my prediction was wrong. I figured Power Rangers fans would also be anime fans.

Seriously, it’s rare I can watch a full review and walk away more knowledgeable and open minded of the show or movie. Great points and delivery. NOTIFICATIONS ON!

I absolutely loved the casting! I do agree with you on the “story-telling”. It was never going to be exactly the same as the anime. I just appreciate Netflix for bringing to “live-action”. I honestly think they did a decent job. Definitely waiting for season 2. Great honest review btw 😎🙏🏾

Tbh it was actually pretty good.. we finally get a main lead that’s well portrayed, badass, and makes us look good. In my books, that’s a win.

Great balanced review! I agree with all your points. I enjoyed the show quite a bit, but I don't really like how they handled Vicious and Julia. Casting and acting was great, especially for Jet!

A big factor for me was run time. With the anime (roughly 22 minutes), each moment was thoughtful and was absolutely efficient. With a one hour run time, it really felt like they needed to fill their episodes out. A lot of your criticisms we're a lot of the same I had. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with changing the story, and trying to take risks, but when they don't elevate the source material, or God forbid, add anything, you get a soulless, pointless attempt to cash in on how mainstream anime has become. Love your perspective and glad to see someone talk with an honest and balanced take.

I will actually speak from the position of someone who DID NOT watch the original (It's still on my to-do list, and after live action I will certainly get to it sooner): I actually think that internally the series works really well, and for quite some time I thought all the hate it gets is coming exclusively from the die-hard fans of the original. However, the longer I think the more issues I see with the storyline of Vicious, and I really think that if the producers leaned more towards what I hear the original storytelling was for him, it could work better. I liked how the character of Vicious was written and his story made sense in context of this series, but I see that maybe more faithful adaptation of him could've made this show greater. And, tbh, it's the only part of the show that really felt off without the knowledge of the original (That and maybe not keeping his and Julia's proper introduction for a bit later). Of course maybe once I watch the anime I'll start noticing the things I didn't experience in live action, but overall it is a good show. Not perfect, but good.

Definitely an interesting perspective to have. Would love your follow up after you watch the anime!

If they can cast Matthew Mcconaughey for Cowboy Andy or Vincent Volaju would be great for Season 2.

Haha yeah I can see that. What did you think of the cast so far?

I am rewatching again to pick up on the story beats that I missed on. Julia played by Elena Satine she is legit singer and noticing now she playing against everyone. No problems with Ed at all many forget she a slapstick character who gets thrown around alot. Yes Edward is a 90's character like the decade the show was produced on. John Cho no Keanu Reeves nor Bruce Lee sure has maded Spike full on cold blooded cruelty believeable.
Giving Jet a family is predictable in TV land liked Shakir enough got the voice spot on. Not making these characters too invincible. Wasted Shin & Lin as characters, Gren not too happy with, Ana is fine now watching her second time around, Faye going to improve alot with Ed around. Punch & Judy were both perfect in there brief appearances hope they get entire episode!

They could have done better they needed someone who loves the source material best example is Alita battle angel with Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron. Hell Robert Rodriguez knows how to make badass flicks on a budget. They had access to Watanabe and they just ignored him and they did some characters dirty like killing shin and Lin like that , gren's veteran of the war on Titan and how he wants revenge, and the lack of prairie oysters also the need a sound director to know how to use the music since they just used it all over the place. If a season 2 comes out I bet they are gonna make Vincent Volaju Gren's Target for revenge instead of vicious and just retcon the movie like that.
