Anthony Newley - Hollywood Palace #6 of 6

  • In 1969, Anthony Newley hosted this show called The Hollywood Palace. It featured songs all written by him and Leslie Bricusse, all sung on the show by Newley himself, and/or by one of the guests he lined-up for the evening. All women of course...
I didn't capture EVERYTHING from it. Just most of the parts involving Tony. No requests, please.
Newley performs his closing number, the ever popular, "What Kind of Fool Am I?" from Stop the World I Want to Get Off.
*I DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THIS VIDEO. My only intention is to expose Mr. Newley to those who wish to see him. I will oblige any request to take this down.*

He was a master songwriter. Along with his writing partner, Leslie Bricusse, they wrote several musicals together.
1961 - "Stop The World, I Want To Get Off!". Most familiar song - "What Kind Of Fool Am I?".
1965 - "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd". Most familiar song - "Who Can I Turn Too?".
1971 - "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory". Most familiar song - "The Candy Man".
Just to name a few. They wrote no less than 7 musicals together. They are still considered some of the greatest musicals in musical theatre history. And, are all in continuous production worldwide.
And on a personal note, "Who Can I Turn To?" is hands down my most favorite. Because, it's not any run of the mill musical ballads. If you take the time and truly concentrate on the beautiful lyrics, you'll realize that it's actually a prayer to God.

Newley WROTE this you "fool"! If it weren't for him, Vale & Braswell would never have had the chance to sing it! Personally, this is my favorite version, even above the great Sammy Davis Jr's, but as for YOUR feeling, a LOT of people don't like the way the writter of a song does their own song, but every singer, including the writter, sings it the way THEY feel it. Newley had a very different singing voice than some can grasp, but TONS of emotion in it! BRAVO Mr. Newley!

@bridges52news: Well, with a mom who grew up on this stuff, I've heard all kinds of versions, including the ones you mentioned. This song was not meant to be a pop tune, which is exactly the manner in which those singers rendered it--even Sammy Davis Jr., who I have always respected. This is a Broadway-style song, and Newley gave it the presence and hesitation intended for it. I have no quarrel with your opinion or those singers, but here Newley is giving proper treatment to his music.

I am perhaps in the minority, as I am under 30, but I am constantly enraptured by him. He is every essence of a performer. So few performers nowadays perform so emphatically and theatrically. It's a different class of performer nowadays, you can tell instantly that Newley not only adored being on stage but he lived for the theatre as an artform.

I heard the young David Bowie thought he could be a crooner in the manner of Anthony Newley; here you can hear a similarity.

David Bowie didn't have different coloured eyes. He was injured when his school friend hit him in the eye while wearing a ring (a dispute over a girl). Due to that, one pupil was more dilated than the other, so appeared darker. He remained friends with the boy.

@@bunnyhop3211 Yes, they were friends for the rest of his life. And that is exactly what happened to his eye. I think he was actually in the hospital for a month or so because of it.

@@r.fairlie7186 Sorry to contradict you, but as a rabid Bowie fan who has read everything she can get her hands on about him, I can tell you unequivocally that he did NOT have that syndrome.

@@r.fairlie7186 The injury to Bowie's eye caused his left pupil to be permanently dilated, which is called Anisocoria. This can give the appearance of two different coloured eyes, but they were actually the same colour.
The fight is not unsubstantiated and indeed fact. There are also photos of him before he was a teenager which show his eyes as normal and both grey. I hope that helps.
      He speaks about it here

@@r.fairlie7186 As a professional singer, I can tell you without absolute assurance, his vocal similarity to Newley is not due to that syndrome. He had a very flexible instrument and was able to manipulate the sound as he liked it. (You should here the impressions he did - they were spot-on.) There is a big difference vocally between 1960's Bowie and the Bowie of late '70's onward.

He was a musical genius! Nobody could sell a song the way he did. One of my favorite Anthony Newly songs was Look at that Face. Does anybody have a video of that one that they can post? I would deary love to see it.

What kind of fool am I
    Who never fell in love?
It seems that I'm the only one
That I have been thinking of
What kind of man is this?
    An empty shell
    A lonely cell in which
    An empty heart must dwell
What kind of lips are these?
    That lied with every kiss
That whispered empty words of love
That left me alone like this
Why can't I fall in love
    Like any other man?
    And maybe then I'll know
What kind of fool I am
What kind of clown am I?
What do I know of life?
Why can't I cast away this mask of play
    And live my life?
Why can't I fall in love
    Like any other man?
    And maybe then I'll know
What kind of fool I am
