The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. @@sharigreen9252 Dream on, sister. Newley was a fabulous all-round entertainer in the 1960s whose star dimmed precipitously in the following decades.
Bowie was a one-man cultural revolution and the most influential artist of the last 50 years, whose dignified death ignited a global mournathon.
Newley was not in the same league -- and knew it. He also praised Bowie to the heavens, by the way, describing him as "madly, madly elegant."

Not only do I have massive respect for you… But I am so wistfully dang envious! “Lol”. 😝 💕. ! What a super generous genius he was. That is just beyond lovely. Anthony was simply beautiful here! And, his performance was flawless. But, he was a master, who hated giving anything less than a perfect performance. And, he never failed!
In this particular performance, Anthony reminds me so much of Judy Garland, in his mannerisms.
One thing though, if you listen real close to the lyrics, this isn’t any normal show tune. This song is actually a prayer, and is the reason he pulls the audience attention upward, above his head, and continues removing his hat in reverence when looking upward.

I love this clip, it's great song from a terrific score, and Newley is very touching. The problem with the show was that the heavy handed political messages needed more show business. And there was none. So it had a short run. Anthony Newley was brilliant, and so was Cyril Richards and there are at least five great songs in it, with some serious hits, so listen to the music. Most people think this is a song about a man who's lost his love, and it's usually sung like that, but in the show he's talking to God. Newly uses every trick in the book here, but it all works.

I saw Anthony Newley and the original cast on Broadway in Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd." It was a wonderful show. Most people don't know that the now popular song "Feelin' Good" was from that show. They think it's a Michael Buble song, but the original, sung by opera singer Gilbert Price in the show, was magnificent. It was actually a song about racism--very innovative for the time.

Nobody's mentioned Norman Wisdom but you are so right, and this character Everyman in this show, and Little Chap in Stop the World, is right out of Norman Wisdom's repertoire. Bowie copied him obviously, because he taught Bowie his Show biz 'tricks'.

The song "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" is from the 1964 Broadway musical The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd. The music and lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. The song is a poignant ballad that reflects feelings of loneliness and searching for connection. It's been covered by various artists over the years, including Tony Bennett and Shirley Bassey.
