    I've seen a few of Jules's videos now and they are always the best on CZcams, by a country mile in fact. He explains stuff in such a way that a beginner can understand, never uses jargon or *assumes* the viewer has a certain knowledge of the subject already, like many others do. He is basically perfect for this job and I have benefited several times from his instructional videos. I hope he reads this message and knows just how much these vids are appreciated. So BIG thanks, Jules!

    I have seen several videos on wheel truing here on CZcams. This is the first video that discusses dish and roundness. I recommend you guys change the title of the video, as I never found it when looking for wheel setup, but I happened to stumble upon when looking on repair bucked wheel. Outstanding video. Thanks from Texas!

      did it work

    • @MikeysFitness
      @MikeysFitness Před 10 lety +3

      It felt stiffer and "straight", but the spokes aren't tensioned properly and I don't think they dished the rim either... just a quick job. I asked them when paying if I could see what had been done to the rim with a demo wheel truing stand... he said no, e don't have one and I said, how am I suppose to know if anything has changed or it is straight as the spokes weren't even tensioned properly.. he said you'll just have to take our word for it. I was a bit disappointed seeing as they are one of the most famous bike stores in the UK for high end bikes. Some spokes feel extremely tight, while the others are soft. It rides, though.

    Good video, helpful! I always start by truing straight away, not by finding the loose spokes, so I learnt something straight away. In fact I think I made a mistake by not doing that first earlier today....
    I have a wheel that was badly buckled but I've fixed it somewhat and it isn't so bad now, but there are still loose spokes in seemingly random positions. I probably should have found the loose ones and sorted them out before truing.
    At what point is a wheel too buckled to be trued?

    A good way to know how much to adjust spokes is to take the gap measurement between tool feet and rim (after setting adjuster for other side), divide by 8.
    For example, if it's 4 mm off, 4/8 = 1/2, so do 1/2 turns for tighten on that side spokes.

  • @danielbull6709
    @danielbull6709 Před 5 lety +1

    To verify the rim is truly buckled (bent out of shape) you will need to remove all the spokes and see if the rim lies flat. Here the buckle is caused by uneven spoke tension pulling the rim out of shape.

    To do this cheaply...
    Turn your bike upside down
    Sellotape a pencil to the fork or even just a post-it note side-on.
    Spin and adjust your spokes
    Check dish by eye.

  • @jimijack100
    @jimijack100 Před 12 lety

    Can use your forks and an old brake caliper for buckle measurement. Can sight the dish measurement by eye.

  • @trekkeruss
    @trekkeruss Před 8 lety +61

    Sorry, but I've been a professional bicycle technician for nearly 40 years, and that is NOT a buckled rim. It's obvious to me it is a wheel where the spokes were messed around with to make it really out of true, which is not the same thing as a rim bent from an accident. A bent rim is often only trued with wildly uneven spoke tension, or in really bad cases, bending the rim back through brute force.

      A buckle, out of true. A bit picky. It wasn't straight and he made it straight. End of. If your wheel is bent a different technique is required.
      But when is a buckle out of true or bent, what's the real distinction.
      This guy offered value and gave value.
      Thanks man. Great video. My bent wheel is now straight!

    • @Jigaboo123456
      @Jigaboo123456 Před 8 lety +2

      He means that it is a clockwise turn if viewed from above the wheel. Just think of the spoke as a long bolt you are holding upside down,i,e, with the hex head pointing to the ground and the nipple as the nut you are trying to tighten on it.
      If you turn the nut clockwise as you look down on it, it will go further down the bolt- Transfer that thought to the spoke and the nipple, When you turn the nipple clockwise as you look down, the nipple will move down towards the other end of the spoke, shortening it and thus pulling the wheel rim towards it.

    • @SirPrancelot1
      @SirPrancelot1 Před 7 lety +1

      Jay Igaboo thanks for the nut and bolt analogy, VERY HELPFUL, first time I've heard anyone say this. The clockwise/anticlockwise thing leads to much confusion. Just bought a spoke key, hoping for the best.

    • @Beesa10
      @Beesa10 Před 10 lety

      I've never had that but I think you can potentially damage a rim by over tensioning the spokes, perhaps cracking around the holes in the rim or if it's a strong enough rim then probably you would have the nipples rounding off or maybe threads stripping.
