  • This video was of my first UZFE conversion. A lot of lessons were learnt. Watch • Installing UZFE1 into ... for my latest conversion.
    The first part of my conversion from Rover to Toyota 1UZ-FE in my Land Rover Discovery 1
    Notice the dual battery system. Engine bay wiring nearly completed here.
    Engine is running amazingly quiet with no exhaust. Only the exhaust manifolds have been fitted.
    The exhaust is street-legal now, and this beast has been tamed to a low murmur.
    :(

    I've recently been considering exactly this swap. In reading through the comments and your replies, sure sounds as though you'd recommend against it. (Very impressive replying to comments from over a decade ago, BTW!) From what you experienced, is there another V8 that you'd think might be easier to swap in? An LS, for example?

    • @EvertVorster
      @EvertVorster  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes, it certainly is not a straight-forward swap. If you still have the original engine, I'd recommend giving it an overhaul and upgrade, maybe and aftermarket ECU and pop it back in. It's by far the quickest, easiest and economical way to get your car on the road again, and preserves your vehicle's resale value.
      If none of those are important to you, remember that the Land Rover transmission, diffs and side shafts can't handle a lot of power, so you don't want to go over the top with engine power, unless you feel like swapping out all that, too.
      Then make some very careful measurements of the engine bay, the front differential interferes with quite a bit of the engine bay, and unless you are lifting the truck, you will need an engine that is either very flat, or at least has clearance around the front.

    I have dreamt of this type of install forever.

    I took a slight detour in mine now and am using an R380 and LT230... Hopefully the R380 will last more than five minutes! Having a 300tdi flywheel modified to fit the lexus ring gear at the moment and then will be able to get the engine adaptor made. I already have a rear sump which will be fitted to the engine soon enough.
    Thanks and good luck with yours

      @@EvertVorster Its going well, am actually using a borg warner transfer box. contemplating fitting LPG although i dont do many miles so not currently worth it. Havent blown up the R380 yet.... changed the front prop to a double carden as there was a vibration due to diff pinion angle. Just playing about with some other bits that arent related to the engine really! How about yours?

      @@JD3406 I sold that one. The engine broke everything around it. My next attempt is much more successful, you can see videos about it on my channel. ;)

    Well, not complete garbage.
    The Discoveries are good tourers where the road quality is questionable. Not a lot of loading space, though. They are very comfortable and relatively light on fuel for an off-road vehicle.
    Saying that, my main vehicle is now a Toyota Land Cruiser GX station wagon from 1996. ( FJ80 ) It's MUCH more rugged, and quite capable off road. Tradeoffs are comfort and fuel economy. But, with a family now the extra load space is useful.
    So, so the right tool for the job!

    Hi there.
    I will provide specifics on the conversion once it's done. Unfortunately, we have some misalignment in the conversion, and that has caused some delays. Sump clearance is important, and you might have to get a rear-sumped UFZE1, or lift the suspension.
    Good luck!

    Hi there, this is interesting..
    Is the disco 2 gear box mated with the 1uz or is it 1uz with it's gear box?

    • @EvertVorster
      @EvertVorster  Před měsícem

      Hi there! We used the gearbox from the 1UZ, and made a converter between the gearbox and the Disco's transfer case.

  • @EvertVorster
    @EvertVorster  Před 12 lety

    This specific conversion I used the Automatic gearbox that came with the Lexus V8 engine. The back end of it blots off, and I am in the process of manufacturing a part that will allow me bolt the original Land Rover discovery transfer case back on to it.
    Unfortunately, This project took quite a lot longer than I originally intended. If I had my time and money over, I would have just overhauled the Land-Rover v8 that was in there in the first place. Fuel economy... 8km/l on the open road.

      We used a Dicktator ECU on that one. It's not overly complicated, but you do need to know how to tune an engine.

    How long does a full tank last you approximately on the open road

    • @EvertVorster
      @EvertVorster  Před 3 lety

      That would depend on the size of the tank. We calculated the car to travel 8 kilometres on every litre of gas on the open road.

      Hi there.
      I was using an aftermarket ECU, available in South Africa. The Trade name is Dicktator, and the particular setup used here was the "Wasted Spark" system.

      If it did, I would have left the old ECU in place, and just wired up a new ECU for the new engine. I hope that helps?

      Hi there.
      Sorry for the long delay in answering. Since the town I live in has a harbour, we also have a thriving engineering community. The conversion between the gearbox and transfer case was made from scratch, so you are on your own there.
      However, two critical things to watch out for.
      Sump clearance on the front diff.
      Cooling: With a bigger engine, more heat is produced.

    • @LordNykon
      @LordNykon Před 7 lety

      Couldn't have asked for more, thanks for the tip on sump I had to go back and look at the two engines I had sitting on the floor, one is front the other is rear sump, so I'll have to dry fit them to see which has better clearance before I continue further. I appreciate the response.

    can you still use the 4wd once you swap the oem engine to a toyota engine ?

    • @EvertVorster
      @EvertVorster  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi there, Hoo. It completely depends on where along the drive chain you swap over from the Toyota to the OEM. For instance, if you change just the engine and make an adaptor plate between the gearbox and engine, you will be able to use the 4wd just like normal. Unfortunately the extra power from the 1UZFE will almost certainly destroy your gearbox, transfer case or differentials. Overall, I would recommend against doing this conversion.
