TRAIN MISSION FROM KUALA LUMPUR TO PENANG | Butterworth to Georgetown Travel Vlog 086, 2017

- At 2am we decided to book the KTM Train from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on the ETS line! It actually goes to Butterworth train station, next to Butterworth ferry port, and then you need to take the Penang Ferry. ⬇ Click 'Show More' to expand ⬇
Dayum, we were sort of prepared for it, but didn't realise how long it would take to train and ferry our way from Kuala Lumpur to Penang. The ferry portion was easy, as was the initial train, the only long part was the 4 hour train covering the most distance from KL.
The Butterworth KTM station doesnt really have any sign posting to get to the Penang Ferry, but it is pretty straight forward.
Georgetown seems like an awesome place, after a few days looking around we're pleased we managed to squeeze George Town and Penang into our Malaysia adventures!

State of Penang is divided into two parts, the mainland (Seberang Perai) and the island (Penang Island). *Butterworth* is the major and largest town of Seberang Perai. *George Town* is the major town of "Penang Island" and is the capital city of "State of Penang". So, don't get confused "State of Penang" with "Penang Island" because "Seberang Perai" and "Penang Island" are in the State of Penang.
I am a Malaysian and its cool to see this video, I am amazed how foreigner discover this method to travel to different states / city in the country; for your reader and other subscriber - Uber is no longer available in Malaysia, get Grab app instead to book taxi / private cars.
Thank you for showing all your transportation modes it was fun and interesting Daneger you are great in giving us all information
Love you’re videos and the style you do them fun fun fun . Myself and wife will be taking this exact journey so this was really helpful . We live in U.K. so it’s a hell of a long way lol thanks guys and I’ll subscribe 👍🇬🇧
Hi Dane & Stacey, I enjoy watching your videos. Very pleasant to watch, and informative. I read your book last year, and I'm going to launch to Malaysia next month. Then to Thailand in June. Happy travels!
Nice Vlog.
I am traveling to Malaysia in the next few days, good reference.
Another great vlog! Love seeing others’ experiences on travel days.
Thanks man!
recently found your channel and have become obsessed! binging your videos so please keep up the amazing vlogs and editing!
So nice Bianca, thank you for following along!
Hahaha the guy in yellow shirt (the ktm staff who checking the ticket) is my friend 😂😂
Haha thats funny! Crazy you spotted him
you guys are really cute together. Make a my day watching your vlogs. Very genuine
Awww thank you so much ❤️
YOu both are wonderful!
I am a Penang girl and I love that you are exploring Malaysia and making Penang the top of your list!
Thank you so much Jasmine! We loved Penangs food, people and street art! Just put up a new video on it :)
loved the vlogs guys. Been busy lately so binge watching your vlogs again I am hoping to go to Malaysia next year
Oh that's awesome, stoked you're going back and trying to catch up - we've been pumping them out lately haha.
Thank you for visiting my country! Have fun here!
Thanks so much! We love it.
Whoa, the on-board meals are so cheap!!! The price is equal to what we have on our Indonesia's trains. The difference is, on-board meals on Indonesia's train are more expensive than what we may find outside.
It is good to see how the station and the ferry dock are conveniently located. I went to Penang by bus in 2014, anw.
Enjoyed watching this helpful video! I just can’t wait to visit Penang in February!
Penang is awesome. You should check out our others from Penang/Georgetown - the street art one is pretty fun and interesting (we think haha)
Daneger and Stacey yes! Been checking out your videos. Thanks, again!
Just wait until the Penang Sentral is complete. It will easier for you to check in the ferry terminal. Love your vlog.
Didnt know that was being done, thanks for the heads up and for watching!
Better late than never. Great vlog as always. That rain looked crazy. Cheers guys
Haha you cant win every time mate :P
I recently visited KL and Penang and both of these cities have a very distinctive feel! The Food in Penang is awesome! Nice review of the KTM Train :)
KL has that "distinctive feel" of a city you wish you stayed on the train rather than got out !
The rail is a meter gauge.
ETS is the fastest meter gauge train.
Haha -- I had a good laugh about the luggage. My wife and I traveled with two roller cases about the size of yours. It was on the exact same trip (KL Sentral to Penang via train & ferry) that I thought "What was I thinking, this luggage is terrible for this kind of travel!" The bags just about shook apart when leaving the ferry running across the striated surface (mini rumble strips?).
Just a note of interest -- when you come out of the front of the Butterworth train station (where you saw the "Feri" sign) you can take a free shuttle bus (it's basically right in front of the doors and at the bottom of the handicap ramp) from the train station to the ferry terminal. It doesn't really save much, if any, time but it avoids schlepping rolling luggage up and down all the stairs. The same is true in reverse for folks leaving Penang. If you wait until the ferry unloads all the cars a van will show up that takes you to the train station.
Haha yeah the majority of the time they're great, but completely agree with the shudders and bumps and the bags feeling like they'd vibrate apart! Turns out the ferry bus would have been much easier, oh well, next time haha.
you might waste more time on the bus due to longer journey.
nice vlog... love the shots... really capture the moments...
Thanks Dinie! Appreciate you checking out our stuff :)
Interestingly shaped hotel room. Show us lots of Penang food. Yummy!
Haha so weird aye, why is it a semi-circle? Any way, it was a great room. penang food tour video drops tomorrow!
Thanks for this video, I'm planning to go to kuala Lumpur in april and wanted to squeeze Penang, I think I'll do this, take the train and ferry, looks more comfortable than the bus
We had some friends take the bus - which was cheaper, but took way longer and not as good for sure!
Alternately, AirAsia fly direct from Klia to penang Is for around $30 or so.
1:44 Gemas is completely in the other direction (southbound)...interesting they share the same track! And yes, KTM Komuter used to run all the way there (though now Butterworth station gets these local electric trains instead).
You guys should dive to the southern (Malacca/Johor) & east coast peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan/Terengganu/Pahang).. Superb foods & rich local culture!?!
Great vlog!! Thumbs up guys..
Thanks! We've left Malaysia now sadly, but we've got lots of videos from there, check out the Playlist: czcams.com/video/0Q6ey_FMW_k/video.html
that is cool, i'd love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing
Awesome :) Thanks for watching and following along.
hehe,I also learn how to make travel video from your channel.
I alway forget to tell you guys that I love you logo music at the end!!! Looking forward to the cooking classes! ;-)
Haha thanks - we love that track as well.
Hey! I enjoy your content so much. Feels like I’m traveling through you guys. Although watching all the great food at night isn’t the best idea😂😂😂
Haha oh no Crystal, you gonna get jealous! Tomorrows video is all food, uh oh :P
"So much hate for not having backpacks" LOL!! Stacey is reading my mind :)
Haha - the other 90% of the time they're great :P
Hustle and flow, great video guys. Loaded with tons of travel tips and the hotel room looks fab for that affordable price. 😁 I'm looking forward to your upcoming food tour! 🍛🍜🍡😁
Thanks Larry! This on the go travel and vlog style had slipped for a while when we were stopped for a bit in Hoi An, but loving being back with the chaos!
A little chaos is good and a nice change-up to your style. Dane, you and Stacey continue to amaze me with your abilities to deliver quality content, regardless of your style. :)
Hi! Kindly welcome to Malaysia. I'm Ng. I'm a Malaysian living near the state of Penang, a town know as Sungai Petani. Your vlogs and video are amazing and useful, I love it❤️. Besides, do notice that the Penang and southern Kedah are in the state of emergency due to terrible flood which caused by the downfall for last two days. I hope you both travel safely and enjoy the trip😊😊
Thanks so much for watching and asking how we are! Luckily we managed to just get out and fly back to KL before the weather properly hit!
Welcome to Malaysia! Do check out mikey's place at love lane penang..good music there at night 😄
Ok to Every single traveler who is watching this in 2019. Please do be Advised, there is no longer UBER in operation in Malaysia since there was this massive buy over by Grab. But there are many different e-hailing options available. At least there are 30 types that you can use all over the Peninsular of Malaysia.
These are just some of the popular ones :-
1) Grab
2) MyCar
3) Mula
4) Eevom
5) KwikRide
6) EZCab
So go ahead and install these apps in your phones and use them to get around.
Great tips - thanks
I hope you enjoy in your trip to Penang. Short brief, Malaysia has great history of train that beginning since British colonization. Just take a look our historic railway station. Obviously it's the one of the most beautiful also modern in this continent. Now, Malaysia is the only country in southeast Asia has electrified train system.
Thanks so much! Yeah the train system in Malaysia as a whole was amazing!
Malaysia negara maju dan modern

Oh cool - Penang was pretty great, have an awesome trip!
Just read that ure back in KL. Nov-Feb is a monsoon season with pretty heavy rain in Malaysia. Anyway, stay safe!

I just hope you guys are not caught in the flood that's happening in Penang right now. I was really concern about you guys when I heard the news about the flood in Penang. Be safe and enjoy your time in Penang.
Thanks Nikkey - we actually got back to KL last night, JUST in time!
Please come and visit Langkawi Island! Cheers!
Ugh we wont be able to this time sadly :( We're now in the Philippines.
Hope you guys r ok since Penang just got hit by a heavy flood. God bless. Please update on your current situation.
We landed back to KL before the weather properly hit! Thank you so much for asking.
Daneger and Stacey Thank God. Have fun on your travels here. If your planning to visit any islands here in Malaysia, its advisable to go between april and september/october.

Thanks man! The weather was too average to make it to Batu Ferringhi sadly but we definitely had some great food - food video drops tomorrow.
Well glad you did! Can't wait :D
Butterworth is in Penang state.
Butterworth is Penang but it’s the mainland. That island is called Georgetown. People still refer the island as Penang though.
Ugh confusing our lil brains haha. Thanks Beatrice!
Penang is the state, Georgetown and Butterworth is just two individual cities within the Penang State.
What program du you use to edit your videos? Thanks for sharing your vids!
Hey Jimmy! We use FCPX: geni.us/macfinalcut
Just wondering how did you do your food tour, it was raining whole day long here in Penang..
Luckily the videos are a few days behind! We managed to do the tour before the rain hit!
He he... I love to travel by ETS...
Actually nowadays malaysian use the bridge to cross from mainland to penang island.. that's why it's cheap..i guess... And actually now it begins the rainy season... Hope both of u manage to hv fun eventhough it is wet here n there...
The trains have been heaps of fun to figure out haha! The Penang bridges are insane - wow!
Hey good to see you guys uploading a lot. Where do you get your music btw? Thanks
Thanks Renz. Just source most of it from Sound Cloud actually!
Thanks man. Hows is the book going? Is 8t nearly finish?
How long did the walk from Butterworth train station to the ferry pier take?
Don't walk! Read over some other comments, theres a free shuttle apparently haha
I hope they keep the stairs in Butterworth as malaysians are getting unhealthier like the American counterparts...
Hahaha thats a good point. Apparently theres a free bus though, whoops.
Haha. Exactly.
Going to penang tomorrow with train n ferry
Hope it went smoothly!
Kinda lucky you came to Penang just before the disaster flood hitting there
We left the day before it all hit we think! So sad.
If you flew a drone in a train, would it get stuck on the back of the moving carriage? Just a thought...
Hhhmmm, I think if you could fly the drone at the same speed as the train it would stay stationary :)
Have you tried this? or would it fly with you relative to you being stationary? (I don't know what I'm saying but I hope you understand...)
I think that would be so cool...
Wounderbar train , in sweden the trains very often broke or don,t came in time
Are you guys okay? There're storm in Penang and according to media 80% of the island were flooded.
Thanks - videos are about one week behind so we just missed the rain!
Dane, your tattoo makes it look like you're wearing a tee with fancy tattooed sleeves, haha! Loved the video guys! When did ya'll go to Malaysia? And what was the weather like?
Haha thanks I guess. We were there in September or so from memory and the weather was great.
:D You're welcome..and thanks! Looking forward to more of your travelogues!
Hello guys. I'm Malaysian and live near to Penang. I'm just curious how was your day in Penang since Penang and few places around it was flooded with the worst flood ever. The flood started at Saturday night (about 2 days ago). Be careful guys. Or maybe you already move out from Penang before the flood started? Again, welcome to Malaysia! ;)
We were very lucky to leave the day before it all started badly, hope you were ok!
Are you still in Penang Daneger? Because right now is flooding badly everywhere. I’m also in Penang and thankfully the flood does not affect me.
Luckily we managed to just get out and fly back to KL before the weather properly hit! Hope you are doing OK and thank you for checking in to see how we were.
Thank God that both of you not affected with the flood. Hopefully you have great experience in Penang and will be coming back. As I'm also a Penang-ian hahaha. Have fun.
Hi guys. I have a friend in KL right now wondering about the weather in Penang. Are you still there?
Hey mate - we've left Penang, back in KL now. We have some friends there who said it had 'settled' but not sure how it is sorry!
Thanks so much for the quick answer, Dane. I'll forward the info to my friend
Hi guys how much is the train ticket thanks
Train is about 15-20$ USD :) But we flew back to KL, only takes 1 hour and we paid about 35!
Hi. Do you guys use any social network? I need to talk to you. Actually I've plan to go there
hey!!..waving hello from the Pacific Northwest in the USA!!..as you 2 showed up in my *CZcams* suggestions feed..so, wanted to ask:
you said you booked online and *"they printed the tickets for"* you??..but who is "they??" did you mean at the ticket window at the station?? 🚉 they printed out and handed you a copy??...or it's like at the airport?? when you book online and once *at* the airport you can print out your ticket[s] on your own?? at one of the many
self-serve kiosks??
and interesting: Malaysia travel videos are popping up! ever since i started watching uploads by the *"AV Daniel Violin"* channel! haven't yet compared the date or time stamps - but have you 2 couples ever met each other?? because you guys seem to be traveling some of the same pathways...in any case, thanks for sharing your adventures & travel wisdom! 😃 😃👍👍🛬🚤🚢🛫
Good question - we booked online, then when you're upstairs theres two different desks. 1 for bookings, which is what everyone was lining up for. The other was just like a customer service with no queue, we went there, showed the res on our phone and they printed the tickets and sent us back downstairs.
You can also board the train simply by showing the electronic ticket in your phone
You can also board the train simply by showing the electronic ticket in your phone
You can also board the train by showing the electronic ticket in your phone
You can also board the train by showing the electronic ticket in your phonem
Hope both of u r doing fine since i heard that penang is being flooded...
Thanks for asking Zura - Luckily we managed to just get out and fly back to KL before the weather properly hit!
Wow... lucky both of u.. Glad that.. Unfortunately it's really bad condition in Penang now... Sad to hear the news... Maybe u can explore more in KL... or maybe u can go to Malacca... People always say that Visiting Malacca means Visiting Malaysia...
Have fun...
I’m slowly realising that it was a mistake leaving Penang for study 3 & 1/2 years ago. I need to return, home.
Where did you leave to? Penang is pretty awesome huh! you gotta go back.
Can you compare Indian trains from Malaysian trains?
Havent been to India sorry, but these trains were pretty amazing.
Butterworth is a part of penang..
Oh really, so Penang stretches to the mainland as well? Interesting!
Daneger and Stacey yes, on the mainland it's called Province Wellesley or Seberang Perai.
Should then proceed to Langkawi ...u r too near already
We've been :) Check our channel for the vids
Train takes so long! Next time we'll go by plane... and forego the 'premium snacks'. Do not try the tea or coffee - there is no difference on the train!
Ah Kia Ora!,Stace do you have some Maori coursing thru ur viens?.U have a very handy look for Asia, fit in,unlike an old pakeha with tattoos n wrecked teeth.....me.Ive been on that train.I love Penang.
Tip!heavy bags dont wanna do the big walkway train to ferry or vice versa?there is a free shuttle.Ask a security looking dude.
Kia Ora - nope, Stace is half Kiwi half Malaysian actually, but born and raised Kiwi. I'm glad shes not an old pakeha with tattoos and wrecked teeth though haha. Thanks for watching and commenting, Mike. We totally had no idea about the free shuttle and wondered why all the staff were watching and giggling as I carried bags up stairs haha

My best friend told me that only westerners can do long term travel because they are brave enough to do it.i think it's true.
Honestly we don't agree. Anyone who can earn money online can do it. If you want to learn more, find out how others do it, and see the behind the scenes you should sign up for our book.... when it's released we'll let you know. www.danegerandstacey.com

Next time just catch the premium bus from Kl to Penang
Is that easier?? Cheaper? Better?
