  • M'Giia confronts her issues and Frank Malan is... Frank Malan.
    The USS Oberon needs its engines intact for the plot to progress (to a certain point). Otherwise, the mission essentially fails.
    At least the nebula in this mission isn't as bad as the last one.

    Also love the expression of the dude standing in the background. The whole "Holy shit, that had to hurt!" expression while he also looked like he was trying not to laugh at the dumbass who picked a fight with an Andorian.

    If this game happened between V and VI then Kirk really kept his feelings in as in VI he said to Spock in response to his statement regarding the Klingons "They are dying" Kirk said "let them die".

      Correct, this took place in 2288, while on ST5 took place in 2287 and ST6 took place in 2293.

      Kirk talking to his logs and his former first officer is far more personal than talking to cadets who he knows are very impressionable.
      Even in TOS Kirk had some laughs with the Klingon who an alien gave swords to.

    I suspected Forrester taking Chekov's advice in provoking M'Giia would be painful. I was right. xD

    I always love this scenario in the game, a chance to effectively replay the battles in the Wrath of Khan when you are allowed to be follow the regulations that Kirk should have obeyed in the beginning with Khan.

    I damaged it enough before (by aiming for its torpedo launcher) that it immediately gave up after arriving in the nebula.

  • @KiltedCritic
    @KiltedCritic Před 7 lety +3

    There's also a chance for slightly different cut-scenes depending on how the first battle with McNeil goes. If you put your damage control up to 100% on key systems, then let the Oberon attack you with shields down, Forester will then be just like Kirk from Wrath of Khan and actually open with the line; "What's the meaning of this attack?" You can also defeat McNeil without even having to go into the nebula, provided you're quick enough. Best way is to fire your torpedoes as you hit the transport button while their shields are down.

      Yep and aim for the warp nacelle at the time coming from the ventural (below) side of the hull. Federation ships require 2 nacelles to go to warp. If you destroy one he can't warp to the nebula.

  • @NathanHaleBridger
    @NathanHaleBridger Před 10 lety +3

    As I recall, there's an alternate method to this mission where, if you allow McNeill to damage you like Khan did to Kirk, he'll hail you and demand your ship. You can either agree to his terms and automatically fail or agree and stall to give your crew time to lower his shields and rescue the warden.

    • @Alshoff
      @Alshoff  Před 10 lety +7

      What's nice is that the developers knew their audience would get the reference and keep their shields up. You aren't forced to let the scenario play out like the movie. Several missions have multiple solutions.

      @FekLeyrTarg Před 6 lety +1

      It is also possible to stop the Oberon before it warps to the Hyperion Nebula, if you take out her warp nacelles at the same time you beam the warden aboard.

    There's one thing about the Wrath of Khan reference that puzzles me. Wasn't McNeil a disgraced Starfleet officer? Khan would not have known about the command codes, and therefore would not have changed them, but wouldn't McNeil have been aware of that potential weakness?

    • @Alshoff
      @Alshoff  Před 8 lety +2

      +Falchion1984 Well, it might take time to actually change the codes. Access to the ship's computer might have been restricted.

    • @mattmetschan1652
      @mattmetschan1652 Před 5 lety +1

      I get this is old but I came to figure out that McNeil is actually a mix of both Khan and Garth of Izar from the TOS episode "Whom Gods Destroy"... both Garth and McNeil were disgraced former starfleet officers that were apprehended and relieved of command of their respective ships, put in prison colonies, and in the STFA simulated narrative breaks out of prison. So this mission really took elements from both wrath of khan and the TOS episode "Whom Gods Destroy" story wise and character wise for Jacob McNeil and combining them into one

    • @verentyee5413
      @verentyee5413 Před rokem +1

      @@mattmetschan1652 Yes, I remember reading about that in the ship's library computer in-game. I never realized the connection before. The characters have notable parallels plus McNeil serves as a reference to both, as you mentioned. It is sad, though, how both Garth and McNeil lost their well-earned careers. One ended up in rehabilitation, while the other died.
