  • Repainting my back chrome bumper and taking you along for the process. It’s simple and easy to paint over chrome all you need to do is take your time. I used spray cans and achieved body shop results.

    Turned out great man, the only thing I saw that I would recommend for the future, if you look at the clear coat it kinda deflects the light in a disoriented way which is called orange peel. If you wanna take it to the next step, wet sand your clear coat with like 1500 - 2000 grit and buff over with a cutting & polishing compound, it will come out like a mirror.

    Awesome job, man! Thanks for being so detailed in explaining. Some people might call it over kill, but I found it extremely helpful for anyone who doesn't realize what you can do with spray cans. Definitely earned my "subscribe". Also, if you put some links in your description, I bet a lot of people would buy through those links and make you some money. 💰 🤑

    Hello. @Bradley Walsh
    1.) How did you know how much base cost to use? (How did you know when it matches as closest as possible) - I watched you used two full cans, but was wondering how you knew that was time to stop with the base.
    2.) So If the primer is dead smooth, without any debris or anything in it, you don’t have to sand it?
    3.) How did you know how much primer to use?
    Great Video and Lesson.

    This is great video. Thanks for sharing commonly. I have recently bought a chrome bumper for my truck. But the color is metallic. I mean the color is like mirror, it is colorless and shiny. It is brand new bumper. I want it in white color because the front bumper of my truck is white. Can I directly use the paint that is used in the video? or do I have to make sanding and priming on the whole surfaces of this brand new bumper?

    Another good option is to used a diamond concrete grinding wheel on a right angle grinder .The wheel is for flattening nibs in concrete . Cost about 25.00 . Use that to score the surface of the chrome . Every square inch . The scoring is VERY deep and also preps the surface for attaching fiberglass cloth and resin , to patch holes in the chrome . The chrome is now rough enough to accept Bondo . Takes about an hour score the surface of the chrome . Now just resurface and paint as usual . Works great.

    • @theodoremartin6153
      @theodoremartin6153 Před 3 lety

      @@mattbirch93 On my pickup , there is a removeable chrome overlay . I think it is backed up with copper . But dont worry about burning through the chrome . The chrome is so slippery that the rougher the surface becomes the better . As long as the chrome is sound structurally you can grind off a lot. Any rust holes should get the loose rusties ground off and then use heavy weight Fiberglass cloth to patch hole . Then cover everything with thin layer of bondo , just like a car door or panel .

    Great video AND Serious question....why would one not use 2k epoxy primer or etching primer?
    Does the 2k clear do such a good job that it solves the bonding issue with chrome? Or is adequate sanding really enough with the standard primer to have good adhesion?
    I use 2k clear on metal and plastics (Topcoat) but have a project coming up doing some chrome and would really like to feel confident about either using or not using the epoxy primer or etching primer...
    I have just watched 30 videos of idiots painting chrome that will last until the video gets recorded if they are careful...
    Help me Obi Wan Kenobi you're my only hope!...... :)

    Your lower pass is a little light on both your mid and clear coats. You really need to be sure to continue your pass all the way along the bumper not stop in the middle. You should also prep with sand blasting media for ultimate adhesion.

    Nice job Brad, for spray can, but the gloss wasnt there under the number plate section, and definately lots of peel, which you get from spray cans. If people dont have the space or inclination to have a compressor, then would do spray cans, but nowhere near the atomisation from a good spray gun, not to mention the cost. But great work and thanks for the video.

    • @aaronbuck7265
      @aaronbuck7265 Před 3 lety +1

      Paul Noone I've used spraymax 2k countless times with results nearly comparable to my Iwata HVLP. I guess you don't know but after the clear dries you sand with 1500-2500 then compound/polish/wax.. And Fords naturally come from the factory with a fair amount of orange peal. So probably about the same as his final product. But you can either spend $23 on Spraymax 2k clear or $400 HVLP gun/$800 compressor/$90 clear & activator/rent or purchase/build spray booth for $8,000.. Then after that small fortune you still cut n polish for glass results if thats what you're going for.. Plus cleaning your gun and the hours etxta... Why I use Spraymax 2k, which is the same as any 2 part clear you shoot through a HVLP for smaller projects. And tossing the can is the entirety of the cleanup... He may have had an unusually hot day that made the clear dry too fast causing the orange peal.. But a little tlc and it would have the same results. Some people don't have $15,000 to be able to paint a bumper so $20 for the same results makes sense to me.
